KB EAR KB10: brand old

The KB EAR KB10 is a new name for an old design. Not everyone knows that KZ is also an OEM that sells their designs to other companies placing their logo on the earphones. The KB10 are in fact the umpteenth rehash of the same design we’ve already seen in other devices, and they’re virtually indistinguishable from the Tripowin TP10. That’s why this review is so short… because you can literally read the Tripowin TP10 review and you’ll know everything you need to know.

Disclaimer: this unit was provided free of charge by Wendy at KB EAR. They sell the KB10 on their website at $48.

KB EAR KB10: on the rebranding

Rebranding is a thing. Countless products share the same initial design and are then branded by multiple companies. That’s all right. In this specific case, though, some tuning would have largely benefited the KB EAR KB10, as their sound signature is fatiguing and far from ideal. I’m not saying you shouldn’t like it if you do, just that there is a very high chance of the signature not being really appealing to most people and being fatiguing and lacking points of strength. In short, it could be much better. But it isn’t, so I do wonder if KB EAR should not have invested some money into asking KZ to retune the earphones in order to have a better product that would also be different from the competition.

If you really want to buy one of these earphones, I personally encourage you to do so basing your choice on aesthetics and price. I prefer the KB10 over the TP10 because of the odd machined faceplate, but that’s my personal preference.

Final Thoughts

There’s little else to say – the KB EAR KB10 are poorly tuned and the fact that there are much better alternatives at a similar price point out there does not help them. As I wrote on the TP10 review, buy them only if you are really into bright, almost tinny signatures. Otherwise, look elsewhere: it’s not one of those signatures that many can find pleasant or appealing.

KBear KB10 earphone Review

disclaimer: KBear generously sent me the KB10 for review. I did speak to their rep prior to being sent these and informed them that I had already reviewed the TP10 and A10 versions and unless this was a different tuning, that I saw no reason to review it again. What arrived on 7/15 is yet another A10 variation. The KBear KB10 shares all of its details except the faceplate with the Tripowin TP10 and the CCA A10. (See the graph below and you can draw your own conclusions.)

Unboxing / Accessories:

We start with the slip cover style white box that KZ and CCA fans will recognize immediately, with graphics on front and data on back. Inside the clear plastic shield with the earpieces shown and the bagged cable and tips underneath great us. The package includes 3 sets of tips, the cable, warranty card, and earpieces. Pretty standard at this price level. No case is provided.

Build/Fit:

The KB10 uses a polished metal outer shell with a blue transparent plastic inner shell allowing the user to see some of the internals. I do think the faceplates on the KB10 are the best looking of the triplets so that is a point in favor of the KB10. Size wise, the shells are fairly large so may cause fit issues for small ears. I found them to be roughly the same size as the As06 or Zs10. the main body is fairly thin, although the nozzle is on a peaked portion of the shell which fits into the ear canal and means I end up using a size smaller tip than usual because of the shape. Nozzles are aluminum and mate with an internal 3d-printed sound guide instead of using sound bores. Connectors are the raised bi-pin design as has become common recently and when paired with the provided cable, tip up wear is the only option.

Internals:

Drivers are a 22955 for low frequencies, and a pair of 29689 for mids, with a pair of 30095 high frequency drivers rounding out the group. Nominal impedance is listed as 15Ω with a sensitivity of 98dB/mW. I suspect the sensitivity is rated a bit low as I had no trouble getting the KB10 to perform without external amplification from a phone and didn’t detect much of any scaling when it was used with higher power sources.

Cable:

The cable is pure KZ with the 90º 3.5mm jack followed by a 4 wire braid leading to a splitter that is entirely too low on the cable and should be moved up about 5-6 inches. It has no chin slider, and terminates with bi-pin connectors with pre-formed earhooks but without memory wire. The microphone on the right side hangs just below collar height for me and rubs when I move so can be noisy during calls.

Sound:

Bass:

Sub-bass is present but well behind mid-bass in the overall and comes off feeling fairly lean as roll off is fairly pronounced below about 75Hz. s Mid-bass has good thump with quick attack and decay to help keep it clean and more texture than expected. I think this is common for BA bass drivers as they tend to trade low end extension for cleaner, tighter, mid-bass. The upside is there is no tendency to get muddy as tracks get faster and more complex. The downside is bassheads will probably want to look elsewhere as bass is near neutral and certainly wont please that crowd.

Mids:

The lower mids transition smoothly and linearly from the mid-bass and then begin to climb forward as you move up. True mids are forward of the bass and upper mids and lower treble are both very forward. Vocals cut through the rest of the signature quite easily as a result, but come across as strident at times and do show a tendency to sibilance if given and provocation at all. Guitar comes across with an almost assault like quality that while fun at times, is unrealistic at others. Overall, timbre is not quite on and as a result the KB10 sounds unnatural at times.

Treble:

The overly aggressive nature of the mids continues into the Treble and comes across as splashy and harsh. I found the A10 to be quite fatiguing which limited listening time even at modest volumes. The upside is the detail level in the treble is really quite good, the downside, the A10 comes across as having too much top end and sparkle turns to metallic quickly. The treble shy will want to avoid the KB10 as even with EQ its signature remains bright as it is simply tuned that way.

Soundstage / Imaging:

Sound stage is wider than deep with limited height as is very typical of items at this price point. Imaging is solid with good instrument separation and seating the orchestra is fairly good although at times things that should be front/back are beside. Layering is also quite good and I found no tendency to get muddy or congested as complexity increased.

Thoughts / Conclusion:

If my write up so far has sounded a lot like that of the Tripowin TP10 or CCA A10, there is a reason, these three are the same IEM. Not only are they the same shell with a slightly different faceplate, they are the same drivers with the same impedance and sensitivity and to top it off, the plots run on my measurement rig are indistinguishable from one another as shown below. These tests were run as the models came in and are roughly a month apart in date. No tuning of anything was done to improve the match. My rig is set to the same settings for all tests so differences in amplitude will give some hints as to how easy or hard to drive an in-ear is vs always setting 1kHz to 85dB. (These happen to hit it pretty well, but dumb luck rather than intention).

For that reason, I’ll restate my TP10 summary below:

The KB10 is a great example of a good effort that is marred by a singular flaw. In this case, the flaw is tuning. Starting with the upper mids, the KB10 is way too forward and the treble gets outright harsh at times. Diligent EQ can help, but does not completely remedy this and as such unless you just really like an aggressively bright sound, these are probably best left on the shelf. The upgrade cable on the other hand, I highly recommend for anyone looking for an improved design for iems with the now popular hooded bi-pin style connector. (I’ll have another review of the KBear cable posted shortly).

KBEAR KB10

Pros : Engaging accurate sound, nice fitment, and pleasant look.

Cons : Treble might be a bit harsh on some tracks.

I bought these attracted to the multi driver. Not expecting much to be honest given the price. How wrong was I. Out of the box they sound great, fit well, and isolate outside noise excellently. The inner case is transparent, allowing a view of the drivers, crossover, and a lovely pack teeny tiny wires. The back cover looks like machined stainless steel.

Inside each is a balanced armature (BA) woofer, two BA mid range, and two BA tweeters. The drivers are all linked into a tiny crossover board. The connector is a tiny two pin, which connects to a intricately braided 3.5 cable. The cable near the earphones are stiffened loops to help them rest on the top of the ear, and helps provide some strain relief.

Onto the sound. These are in my opinion very source music dependent. Especially with the bass. Some tracks the woofer blows your head off, others its timid and shy. The woofers can rumble, and or slam. The mid range captures vocals very nicely, as well as the entire mid spectrum, nothing seemed hoarse or strained, muddied, or hollow. Tweeters can really scream, some people may not like how much power the have. Now this is good because the treble doesn’t get drowned out, and the brightest details show. However sometimes they can be a bit fatiguing depending on the song. The sum of the parts on the sound is a very clean, energetic party that keeps you going for a long time. They surprise you with each new song you put through them. Very impressive for the price.

KBEAR KB10 – Review

KBEAR KB10

| 5x Balanced Armature |

🎧 We are reviewing the KBEAR KB10, the newest penta driver models from the brand.

The KBEAR KB10 holds 5 balanced armature drivers per earpiece and no dynamic drivers, making it an all-balanced armature driver earphone.

According to the brand’s diagrams, the drivers inside the KB10 are KZ balanced armature drivers. To be more precise, the models are: 1x 22955, 2x 29689 and 2x 30095.

If you read our past reviews of the KZ AS12, KZ AS16

CCA A10 , you might notice that all these models share some of the BA driver models but exhibit different sound characteristics.

The housings of the KBEAR KB10 have a form factor inline with the just mentioned KZ and CCA earphones but with a color combination and back metal plate that is more related with the KZ ZS10 PRO

and KZ ZSN PRO

The aesthetics of the KBEAR KB10 include a metal back with indented shapes over the mirror-like metal finish and translucent, colored resin for the main housings.

Thought the brand has gone back and forth with their naming, still up to now you might find it either as KB EAR or as KBEAR.

The KBEAR KB10 unboxing results in the detachable cable and 3 eartips.

The cable is exactly the same as seen on every latest KZ earphone and CCA earphone.

B

Bass & Sub Bass

The KBEAR KB10 bass is very fast and tight with no loose response nor even a remote tendency to become invasive.

As with every earphone with these bass characteristics, their mid-bass and sub-bass will not be boosted and will not provide a bass-emphasized sound signature.

Expect a remarkably clean bass response that is, yet, not “punchless” nor “deepless”

If you were planning EDM listening sessions the KBEAR KB10 will not be the better choice for you but if you are a listener looking for very clean bass, you might be happy with this model.

Using an EQ an importantly punchier and deeper sub-bass can be obtained, remaining fairly clean overall.

Through out our extreme bass tests, the KBEAR KB10 managed to take up to 37.5% of a FiiO A5

max power with major increase on punch and depth but no basshead rumble nor impact.

M

Mids & Vocals

The KBEAR KB10 mids have alive male vocals and a midrange personality that show not much mid-bass bleed (or any at all).

Their higher mids, though, are emphasized which can risk to sound almost forward and becoming harsh with ease.

Applying an EQ, vocals can be pushed for an even clearer response with very good results and higher mids can be evened up for a slightly smoother response.

On the other hand, do not expect miracles, there will still be harshy peaks.

7.5 /10

H

Highs & Treble

The KBEAR KB10 highs are very bright but might struggle to retrieve detail in comparison with other earphones with similarly styled highs.

The KBEAR’s forward personality exhibited on their upper midrange seems to keep an, unfortunate, logical tuning that is inherited on their highs. This translates into recurrent piercing peaks and sibilance – this is absolutely not an earphone for treble sensitive people.

With an EQ, detail can be more efficiently resolved; another benefit obtained will be a more open sound but, having already fatiguing peaks, this EQ path will empower them.

Sound Isolation

The sound isolation provided by the KBEAR KB10 is stronger than on most “normal” earphones.

This, combined with their strong volume output capacity can grant the KBEAR KB10 a potential to reach absolute isolation without struggling much.

C

Comfort

The KBEAR KB10 is another model that shares the same shells as the KZ AS16

Yet, the KBEAR KB10 has a thicker back metal plate which makes it thicker overall and, consequently, protruding out of the ears more than the aforementioned models and even more than the KZ AS10 and KZ AS06

Nonetheless, if these additional thickness is not of your concern, the KBEAR KB10 will provide a fairly comfortable fit.
