Best of all they are actually not all that heavy or large as other amps we’ve seen at this power rating. They are a mirror image set which look amazing side by side.
These amps were re-capped and serviced officially by Krell not too long ago (over $2K) so its new owner can expect many many years of trouble free operation. Our technical staff confirmed the paperwork with a look under the hood.
This model is fairly rare and doesn’t come up very often.

The SkyFi Testing Process for Solid State Amplifiers:
We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and transistors are checked for signs of stress or damage.
We then power up the unit carefully and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise. Finally, we run the amplifier to its full rated power into the appropriate resistive load provided by our Sencore amplifier tester. If there is an issue, it will usually be noticeable at this point. If everything reads clean, we will often test for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) measured by our Keithley distortion meter, and compare it against the original manufacturers specifications. The amplifier then remains powered on to “burn in” on our test bench for a few hours to make sure there are no heat related issues. If there are balanced inputs available they will be also be tested.
Final testing involves pushing actual music thorough the amplifier. We’ve learned over time that some issues are only noticeable to a trained ear while listening to familiar source material. Our test bench has reference vintage KEF speakers that we’re very familiar with which quickly reveal any discrepancies. Some amplifiers will then move into our listening room where they are tested with our in-house reference speakers of choice.

With its latest series of FPB (Full Power Balanced) amplifiers, Krell is taking careful aim at thebetween classic high-power two-channel systems and quality multi-channel installations where sound is yet paramount. Nevertheless, Krell founder Dan D’Agostino was adamant: Krell’s Class A components were designed for music playback. “I’m a purist, like you, Jonathan!” he told me.
The sleek, good-looking 350Mc monoblock sits in the middle of the FPB series. Specified power is 350Wpc into 8 ohms, 700 big ones into 4, and a whopping 1400W into punishing 2 ohm loads. 250W and 650W monoblocks are also available, while two-channel models with slightly different cosmetics offer 200WPc, 300Wpc and 600Wpc.
The monoblocks are available in symmetrical pairs, with left- or right-side heatsinks, and also as Theater Pack Three and Five combos. A serious two-zone preamplifier—the KCT—and a CD player—the KPS28c—join the upgraded top-of-the-line KPS25sc CD/preamp to round out Krell’s Class A Series.
While both a KCT and KPS28c were on hand during the review period so that I could experiment with Krell’s CAST (Current Audio Signal Transmission) system, I evaluated the 350Mc as a classic pair of two-channel audiophile amplifiers.
Core Technologies
There are a number of technological pillars on which Krell base their Class A designs. First, fully balanced circuit topology with positive and negative signal paths symmetrically referenced to ground, which results in greater noise rejection and less “cable interference.”
“The primary advantage of input-to-output balanced operation is control.” says D’Agostino. “Independent symmetrical circuit paths individually amplify the positive and negative signals, locking the speaker into a push-pull relationship. FPB series amplifiers exercise absolute control over the most unruly speakers, even those with exotic impedance curves and disruptive back-electromotive forces (EMF). These amplifiers overcome the speakers natural resistance to motion and forces them to perform the precise required movements.” Very Krell.
Tech pillar two: Regulation is good, and the more of it, the better. According to their TechSynopsis: “With Krell’s Active Regulation, any change of supply voltage is instantly corrected, whether due to variations in the AC line voltage or to changes in output stage current delivery.” The paperwork goes on: “The power supply relies on large banks of capacitors to support it during demanding dynamic passages. Unfortunately, the capacitor’s passive nature dictates that there will always be a time lag between the precise moment the power supply needs current and when it’s supplied. The result is the output rail voltages cycle back and forth from linear to non-linear states, depending on the demands of the signal and the load.”
The output stage in all FPB amps is fully and actively regulated through a “free-floating feedback arrangement” where “ultra-fast regulators” operate independently of the output stage while monitoring its condition and responding to even the smallest drop in current or voltage with “essentially instantaneous regulator response.”

Just pulled these out of the box yesterday and they sound outstanding. Had a pair of FPB250Mc’s that were underpowering a set of Watt/Puppy 6’s (W/P). Before purchasing I tried, for a few days at home, the FPB600M. This was not nearly as detailed as the 250’s and created much too much bass response. Also the separation was just crappy. Sounded like one big blobb in the middle of the room. Given the choice, I would have stayed with the 250’s. Had not tried the 350’s on the W/P6’s but did hear them as compared to 250’s on a set of Wilson Maxx’s. Probably an unfair test given the size difference between the W/P and Maxx’s, but decided to go for it when my 250’s were purchased out from under me. Apprehensive as I was spending almost 2x on the 350’s, right out of the box (truthfully, with about 10 hours of burn in and all warmed up), these were the best sounding amps I’ve ever heard. With the W/P’s I can’t say I’ve ever heard anything so good. They are 100% faster then the 250’s and have a clear, crisp sound that one expects from the Krell/Wilson combo. Having said this, they are not too agressive like the old KSA/Wilson W/P 5.1 combo. These amps drive the Wilson’s with a subtleness that I would expect to see from a Levinson, but have much more dynamic range. Clearly, I’m a big fan. I can’t say I’ll ever be so impressed with a new audio product as I have been with the addition of the FPB350Mc’s. Try them for yourself and enjoy!
