MIL-PRF-26915D, PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION, PRIMER COATING, FOR STEEL SURFACES (31 OCT 1997) [SUPERSEDING MIL-P-26915C]., This specification covers two types of primer coatings. The primers are compatible with aliphatic polyurethane and enamel topcoats and have reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) content.
MIL-PRF-26915 Primer Coating, for Steel Surfaces
An organic type paint which produces a film containing high metallic zinc in contact with the steel. Like galvanizing, this zinc is electrically conductive, thereby preventing corrosion electro-chemically. It is also suitable as a finish coat on all ferrous and galvanized surfaces. Available in Class B, two-component, or class A one componentType I or Type II.
The zinc dust primer shall be furnished in the following types and classes as specified:
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surface must be clean, dry and free of all contamination before application of primer.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
When tested as specified in the Military Specification attachment, a one-gallon container of primer shall be easily mixed by hand to form a smooth homogenous material free from lumps or other objectionable characteristics.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLASS B: Combine 1 gallon of vehicle to pre-measured gallon of zinc dust by slowly mixing the zinc dust portion into the vehicle while under constant agitation. Mix thoroughly to disperse any lumps of zinc dust that may form while combining. After complete mixing, strain the admixed material before application.
APPLICATION
Chemsol’s MIL-PRP-26915B Zinc Dust Primer can be applied by brush, roll or spray. Thin Type I with Synthetic Reducer or Xylne up to one pint per gallon or needed for proper atomization. Thin Type II with Chemsol’s Baking Reducer up to one pint per gallon or as needed for proper atomization. The primer shall be suitable for application by spraying over solvent-cleaned, phosphoric acid treated, zinc phosphates or sand blasted steel. In one cross coat, applied by spray, at least 2.5mils in dry film thickness shall be deposited. One hour after application, the coating shall be smooth and even, free of runs, sags, steaks or other imperfections. The primer for spraying shall be thinned in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
DRYING TIME
A film of the primer prepared and tested in accordance with 4.6.20, shall dry dust free in not more than one hour and shall dry through in not more than 2 hours.
