Naim N-Vi review
NAIM is one of hi-fi’s most respected names. Based in Salisbury, the company has long been a bulwark of British hi-fi, a high priest at the church of stereo purism.
Forget graphic equalisers and flashing lights – in Naim’s vision of audio Nirvana, nothing has ever been allowed to interfere with sound quality, no matter how convenient or stylish it might be. Indeed, for a time, even remote controls were viewed as heretical.
However, products like the DVD5, one of the best DVD players we’ve ever tested, prove that revisionist thinking is beginning to take hold down Naim way. The n-Vi, a complete hi-fi and home cinema system in one box, simply takes the process on a stage further.
One box – no shortage of ability
There’s nothing new in the ‘all-in-one’ concept – Linn did it years ago, with the Classik Movie, and Arcam more recently with the Solo.
The difference lies in the quality of Naim’s execution, which is remarkable. It positively flattens its Linn rival for both sound and picture quality, and delivers performance so impressive, it genuinely rivals the best separates kit.
So, what do you get for your money?
The n-Vi is the first Naim to use digital amplification, its slim chassis playing host to five channels of Class T power, rated at 50w into 8 ohms: all you need add is a suitable 5.1 speaker package. The ‘front end’ can play and decode a broad range of discs: it’s compatible with both DVD-Video and DVD-Audio, and its Cirrus Logic DSP processor is capable of supporting Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro-Logic II and DTS Neo:6 surround.
Naturally, you can also play your CDs (and CD-R/-RWs), and an extensive range of inputs means you can also feed in external sources as diverse as your iPod (via a dedicated 3.5mm fascia input) and satellite TV (via an optical digital input on the rear).
Upgrade modules add to attraction
And it’s even upgradeable. If you want to listen to the radio, an internal DAB/FM module can be fitted for £250, while a video scaler to improve picture quality, even for external video sources, is currently in development.
Installation is a doddle, made simple by clear on-screen menus and a thoughtful set of video set-up test patterns (as used by the DVD5). For the optimum video performance, Naim suggests you use the DVI digital video connector and access the n-Vi’s Faroudja progressive scan video processing.
Picture performance is just gorgeous: lavishly textured and full of colour, it looks every bit as good as the best stand-alone £1000 decks.
Sound, meanwhile, is effortlessly dynamic, the Naim showing none of the brittleness under load that can afflict some slim systems. Instead, 5.1 soundtracks fairly burst into exciting, glorious life, being at once dramatically energetic and thoroughly accurate: the Naim simply places information where it ought to be, drawing you into a soundfield as broad as it is convincing.
Add in stereo performance that at least matches the best efforts of good-quality budget separates, and clearly, Naim has achieved something special.
The n-Vi is a modern-day miracle: not a bad effort for one of hi-fi’s old-school.

Naim unveiled its new high-end, all-in-one n-Vi system.
The n-Vi is an audio preamplifier and five channel power amplifier, as well as AV processor. It is an upgradeable integrated CD player, DVD-Video player, and DVD-A player. An optional FM/DAB radio will be available right from the start, whereas a video scaler module (that will include an external video input) will come during spring 2006. It decodes Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II. n-Vi also features progressive scan and HCDP-enabled DVI video output. The n-Vi comes with a bi-directional RS232 port for connection for custom install into ‘intelligent homes’. It is compatible with the new Naim NA-Bus for bi-directional control and interoperability with future Naim products.
The marketing concept that prevailed at Naim is that users are above music fans who wish to incorporate home cinema into their systems, hence an all-in-one solution. In addition, Naim believes that the n-Vi will broaden its customer base in the direction of AV enthusiasts. The idea is that customers might consider adding AV to a system as a bonus, but are reluctant at buying a separate AV processor/DVD player system. In addition, the company believes that many people who wish to to turn to AV systems will want to do that in a seperate room.
In the UK the n-Vi will cost £2995 without tuner and £3250 with the module fitted.

Trouble-shooting
Sound coming from surround speakers when playing a

Dolby Pro Logic II or Neo:6 surround mode is probably enabled.
Use the handset
mode
key to select Stereo or auto.
No test signal.
Ensure test signal is switched on then select a speaker in the
level setup menu. See Sections 7.6.4 and 7.6.5
Ensure the master volume is not set to zero. Use the the
handset volume keys to adjust.
Player must be in stop mode with the disc input selected and
no disc loaded.
Test signal too quiet.
Use the handset volume keys to adjust the overall volume level
Cannot get 5.1 sound.
Ensure all speakers are correctly connected and defined in the
On Screen Setup.
Tip:
Press stop and listen for a very quiet hiss
from each speaker. You will need to be very near the speaker to
hear this. If a speaker has no hiss check the connections and
the On Screen Setup.
Ensure the n-Vi is not in stereo mode.
Check the disc has a 5.1 soundtrack (normally shown on the
back of the cover).
Press the audio button on the remote to cycle through the
available audio tracks. Some discs prohibit change of audio
format from the handset. In these cases the audio track must
be changed from the DVD menu. Access the DVD menu with
the handset

key.
Movies are quiet with centre and surround signals lost in
systems with front speakers only.
Ensure centre and surround speakers are switched off in the On
Screen Setup. See Section 7.6.1
No sound from front left or right speakers.
Check they are set to ‘large’ or ‘small’ and not to external. See
Section 7.6.1
Check the front panel display channel scheme icon. See

No sound or very quiet from front left or right speakers
when using an external amplifier.
Check the preamplifier or integrated amplifier AV input is set to
unity gain mode.
Front panel input socket cannot be selected.
The front input can only be selected when a plug is inserted.
Audio from front panel input is mixed with input A3.
This is normal. The front input is a duplicate of input A3.
Either stop playback of the equipment attached to input A3 or
disconnect it. Having equipment connected to input A3 and the
front input simultaneously will not damage either the n-Vi or
source equipment.
Audio cuts-out at high levels.
The n-Vi will automatically protect its amplifier circuits if the
output exceeds safe levels. If this happens the sound will
momentarily be muted and a warning message displayed on the
front panel. If protection occurs at low volume levels contact
your local retailer or distributor for advice.
