Text description provided by the architects. Sebastian Irarrazaval sent us this concrete house, located on a complex in the chilean country side next to the beach, featuring houses from the best chilean architects called 8 al Cubo.
The house is to be inhabited during weekends; special occasions when persons, on the one hand, inhabit space during long periods of time and on the other hand, inhabit space in an informal and more distracted way.
For that reasons the configuration of house focuses on shadows as the main element that qualifies space, making space to change during the day and indeterminacy of physic and programmatic boundaries, making circulation as free as fluid is the relation between different spaces.
The configuration of the house poses multiple way of moving form one place to another, being through the center of the house or through its perimeter.
The core is an ambiguous patio, where constantly moving shadows make it hard to say whether it is an inner or outer space. In order to highlight that idea, pillars are displayed randomly, avoiding the grid pattern and getting closer to the idea of the forest.

Nacido en 1966, en la prefectura de Kanagawa, Japón, es un arquitecto japonés con base en Tokio. Ocho Al Cubo house is a part of a bigger project that involves 8 architects and a landscape architect to design 8 houses for sale, eight times in different places around Chile.
The idea of Eduardo Godoy, the project developer, was to join 8 groups of outstanding architects that will develop groups of houses which in total will be more than the sum of all parts and in which each project is at the service of a better welfare.
In the case of this house the land has a slope which falls into a golf course to the East in its lower point and has farther view to the sea to the west in the upper point.
This house is in the lower part which is beside a golf court beneath a street.
The idea is to locate this house at a lower level so it will be incorporated into the landscape of the golf course, liberating the views from the street.
The program is developed in an S plan which leaves service areas in one side, public area in the center and bedrooms in the other side.
The house opens to two patios: one is a more intimate space near the street, protected by a wall of 2.5 m and the other one is more public and opened to the golf court. In between them the public activities take place.
The house has a big roof and underneath different activities take place.

Ocho al Cubo: el mega proyecto de arquitectura que avanza en Santiago
Ocho al Cubo es el nombre del proyecto de arquitectura chilena e internacional de alto nivel gestado desde 2003 por el Departamento de Arquitectura de Interdesign. Un proyecto pionero en la concepción de la arquitectura en nuestro país y cuyo nombre apela a los 64 destacados arquitectos que crearán ocho conjuntos de ocho casas. En total, 64 obras de alto vuelo.
Un proyecto encabezado por Eduardo y Philippe Godoy y que cuenta con al menos cinco etapas: La primera se realizó en Marbella. La segunda, post terremoto del 27-F, estuvo enfocada a vivienda social y tras quedar congelada se está retomando en el pueblo de Los Vilos. La tercera y cuarta, en el mismo lugar, la famosa Ocho Quebradas, con casas de Max Núñez, Alejandro Aravena (que ya tienen dueños) y una tercera del también ganador del Pritzker, el japonés Ryue Nishizawa. La quinta etapa, pronto a entregarse, es un proyecto de vivienda colectiva en el barrio Italia.

En conversación con el programa Plaza Pauta, de Radio PAUTA, Philippe Godoy, ingeniero comercial de profesión y director de Ocho al Cubo, contó que este proyecto “nace de la pasión de Eduardo (Godoy, su padre) de hacer cosas originales y bastante locas, en un momento en que los desarrollos inmobiliarios eran bien estándares o fomes, siempre con arquitectos de la casa tratando de abaratar costos en ese sentido. Eduardo, junto a dos grandes amigos de él, el ya fallecido Christian de Groote y Mathias Klotz, comenzaron a conversar sobre la posibilidad de hacer casas, cada una por un arquitecto. Esto fue una conversación en un bar que poco a poco fue materializándose”.
Ocio La escasez que inspira a Alejandro Aravena El arquitecto, ganador del Premio Pritzker 2016, rompe con la idea de que la creatividad necesita abundancia.
Apuestas brillantes
Desde el comienzo el propósito fue convocar a ocho arquitectos por etapa, cuatro connotados y cuatro “lumbreras jóvenes”, en palabras de Godoy. “De hecho, para la etapa de Marbella, hace 17 años, esas apuestas fueron Smiljan Radic, Cecilia Puga, Mathias Klotz y Sebastián Irarrázaval”.
Los proyectos se realizaron bajo la normativa del lugar: casas blancas de estilo mediterráneo. El japonés Toyo Ito, otro ganador del Pritzker, adaptó su obra con hormigón pintado blanco. Buscando mayor libertad es que Ocho al Cubo llegó a un loteo en Los Vilos.

Por estos días, trabajan en los últimos detalles de su primer proyecto en Santiago, en el barrio Italia. “Nuestra evolución ha sido hacer estas obras impactantes de ultra alto nivel para luego generar proyectos para público más amplio en Santiago. Nuestra apuesta ahora es un barrio muy particular, como el barrio Italia, e impactarlo lo menos posible. Queremos densificar de una manera amable. Lo que hicimos fue transformar una casa en tres departamentos. Estamos trabajando con Studio SCL, de Gabriel Cáceres y Daniel Lazo, arquitectos jóvenes de la Universidad de Chile, que hicieron Factoría Italia, a tres cuadras”.

Se ha diseñado con el fin de utilizarse los fines de semana en instancias de vacaciones mientras los habitantes disfruten el espacio de una manera informal y distraída.
Por esta razón, la configuración de la casa se centra en las sombras como el elemento calificador principal del espacio. Este concepto hace que el espacio cambie la indeterminación de los límites físicos y programáticos, generando una circulación libre y fluida entre los diferentes ambientes.
La configuración de la casa plantea múltiples formas de moverse de un lugar a otro, ya sea a través del centro de la casa o a través de su perímetro.
El núcleo es un patio ambiguo, donde las sombras en constante movimiento, hacen que sea difícil percibir si se trata de un espacio interior o exterior. Para resaltar esa idea, los pilares se muestran al azar, evitando el patrón de cuadrícula y acercándose a la idea del bosque.
