SCREEN SHOT is a Virtual Artist Talk series presented by Scope Of Work (SOW) that takes place twice a week for the next 6 weeks featuring one SOW Member and one veteran POC creative. Every SCREEN SHOT session is 30 mins long and the featured artist will present some examples of their work, answer a series of questions, and share at least one skill share, tool, or best practice related to their art form.
The goal of SCREEN SHOT is to highlight how both SOW Members AND creative veterans are maintaining their creative identities through this global crisis. It’s meant to be an intimate window into an artist’s work and their creative practice from the privacy of their homes.
Peter Ash Lee is a New York-based photographer and director. Born in Seoul and raised in Toronto, his work is informed by the pursuit of a contemporary standard of beauty that champions diversity and representation.
Peter is also the editor-in-chief and co-founder of Burdock, an arts and culture publication celebrating multi-dimensional Asian American experiences. He has worked with commercial and editorial clients including Vogue, The New York Times, T Magazine, H\u0026M, and Dior.

Hi Peter, thank you for this interview! Let’s start with the basics and some free flow. Tell about yourself and the start of your career.
I was born in Seoul, and my family immigrated to Toronto when I was 7 years old. I was studying psychology at the university but decided to move to NYC and pursue photography.
The theme of revealing the Asian-American is a prominent one in your work. How do you think it helps the community to build or reshape its perception in the fashion field?
Growing up in Canada and living in the US, I didn’t see myself represented in the media. I never saw anyone that looked like me in movies or on the covers of fashion magazines. I also didn’t see Asian photographers shooting for the magazines I looked at, which made me question if I could even make it as a photographer.
My vision is to see more diversity and representation in the world of fashion and mainstream media and to change and challenge the standard of beauty that currently exists. I want to continue to push for that change through my work.
I also want to encourage more young people of color to pursue arts, so we can continue the shift and see more representation both in front and behind the camera.

Q: Have you always known that you wanted a creative career since you were a kid?
A: I remember as a kid, I wanted to be an animator and would spend my free time drawing my favorite cartoon characters. As for photography, it was only after I met my cousin one summer in Korea who was working as a still-life photographer that I realized that this could actually be a real career.
Q: Is your creative process or approach different when you work as a photographer, a videographer, and an editor-in-chief, respectively?
A: Big picture, I think it’s all very similar. It’s about having a point of view, and hopefully creating something compelling.
