Make me hear of Your faithful love in the morning,
for I trust in You.
Teach me how I should walk,
for I offer my soul up to You.

I am a terrible morning person. I’d be ecstatic if days didn’t start until after 9:00 am. But because the world doesn’t function that way, I’ve had to find a way to do mornings better than my natural inclination.
Thankfully, I discovered something that helped change not only my mornings but my life, for the better. It’s tucked away in those first sacred moments of the day right before my feet hit the floor. Don’t worry, it isn’t something that demands much time or training. Truthfully, it’s so simple, we overlook its power.
A morning prayer to start your day.
When we use those first few moments of the day to pray, we walk into our day conquering negativity and disappointment. Prayer starts our day in gratitude and infuses our hearts with hope and bravery.
There isn’t one right way to pray. What matters is tuning into Jesus, giving Him our first, and deepening our relationship with Him. However, if you are the kind of person who craves some structure and guidance, I am honored to share with you my personal strategy.
Most frequently, I use the ACTS Model of prayer. It resonated with me years ago and is now ingrained to the point of habit. (For more information, I share the ACTS Prayer Model HERE on my website) I also always pray using Scripture because God tells us in Ephesians 6 that His Word is the sword of the Spirit. By praying God’s Word, we wield the most powerful weapon we have!
Psalm 143 is a hope-filled Word from the Lord. It fuels our spirits with bravery and prepares us for our day. The Bible is filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of verses we can turn into our morning prayers. This example is only a starting point for you.

Listen to me when I ask you for help.
Answer me, because you are a loving and fair (God). v2 Do not *judge (me) your servant,
because nobody alive (on earth) is *righteous. v3 An enemy is following me.
He is trying to kill me.
He wants to put me in a dark place,
like (people) who have been dead for a long time. v4 My *spirit inside me is becoming weak.

I think about all that you did.

The Story of Psalm 143
Bible students think that David wrote verses 1-6 of this psalm. A later writer put verses 7-12 after what David wrote. Verses 7-12 all come from other psalms. The later writer maybe did this to make the psalm better.
David wrote his part of the psalm when he had trouble. Maybe this was when his son Absalom tried to kill David. The story is in 1 Samuel chapters 15-19.
What Psalm 143 means
Verse 1: “*LORD” is a special name for God. It is his *covenant name. A *covenant is when two people (or groups of people) agree. Here, God agrees to love and give help to his people. They agree to love and obey him. You say a *prayer when you speak to God.
Verse 2: “*Judge” means “say whether someone is right or wrong”. “*Righteous” means “very, very good”. Only God is really *righteous.
Verse 3: The dark place was *Sheol. *Jews believed that they went to *Sheol when they died. There was no light there.
Verse 4: Our spirit is the part of us that lives after our body dies. The *Jews believed that you thought with your *heart.
Verse 5: Many Bible students think that:
· “all that you did” means what God did for his people;
· “all that your hands have done” means what God made, like the earth, the stars and the sun.
Verse 6: People raised their hands to God when they prayed to him. Many Christians still do this. Bible students are not sure what “*selah” means. Maybe it means “stop and think”; or “stop and pray”; or “a place for music”.
Verse 7: “Hide your face” means “look the other way”. If God looked away, he would not see (or answer) people’s *prayers. The Pit was the worst part of *Sheol. It was a hole. If you went into that hole, you never came out again!
Verse 8: “*Trusting” means “believing in and hoping”. The *psalmist (the person who wrote the psalm) believed in God. And they hoped that God would send help.
Verse 9: “Hiding in you” means “*trusting that you will do something”.
Verse 10: “Your spirit” is another name for God. In the *New Testament it became the *Holy Spirit. The “ground that is flat” means a place where it is easy to walk. It is like a picture of an easy life. The *psalmist hopes that God will lead him to an easier life.
Verse 11: “Because you are *righteous” may mean “because you do what is right and good”. It is not quite the same as “very, very good”.

Sheol ~ *Jews believed that you went to Sheol when you died.

Psalm 143 is the 143rd psalm of the biblical Book of Psalms in the Masoretic and modern numbering, part of the final Davidic collection of psalms, comprising Psalms 138 to 145, which are specifically attributed to David in their opening verses.[1] It is one of the seven Penitential Psalms. The New King James Version calls it “An Earnest Appeal for Guidance and Deliverance”.[2]
In the slightly different numbering system used in the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible and in the Latin Vulgate/Vulgata Clementina, this psalm is Psalm 142.
The psalm has two equal sections, verses 1-6 and 7-12, separated by a Selah.[3]

Father Stavros Akrotirianakis points out that in most English translations, verse 11 reads “in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble”,[8] whereas the reading in Greek is “in your righteousness bring out of trouble my soul”. This then affects the reading of verse 12. “This verse asks God specifically to destroy those who afflict our souls, not our lives.”[9] Alexander Kirkpatrick notes that the verbs “revive” and “bring” should be read as future statements based on confidence in God, rather than as imperatives.[3]

Psalm 143 is recited on the fourth Thursday of the four weekly cycle of liturgical prayers at Lauds (Morning Prayer) in the Liturgy of the Hours, and every Tuesday night at compline (Night Prayer).

Lead Me on Level Ground
It takes wisdom to navigate this world as a child of God.
There are difficult decisions we face and moral dilemmas which confuse us. There can be the challenge of tense relationships in our family and church. There is also the question of how to interact with the world around us, a world that is not inclined to treat us fairly but to be harsh and hateful. A child of God often realizes that it takes heavenly wisdom to know what to do.
This is the gift that David prays for in Psalm 143: wisdom. In this Psalm he is pleading to God for deliverance from enemies. David is hard-pressed by them, and he is very frightened.
And because of his perilous situation, he is also confused and perplexed. David doesn’t say exactly what kind of direction that he needs from God: perhaps knowing how to respond appropriately to his foes, or what is the way out of this snare, or how to move forward in faith. But he acknowledges his trouble and prays, “Make me know the way I should go” (v. 8).
And again he prays to God in verse 10,
Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!
David here confesses that it is God’s Holy Spirit who can help him walk safely through this dark valley. He might be feeling forsaken, but he knows that the Lord’s holy presence is always with him. He might be flustered, but he trusts that God will surely guide him to “level ground.”

Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground—such is the prayer which we humbly offer together with David! We need God to lead us by his Holy Spirit, for we are often weak, blind and fearful.
Think of how Jesus our Saviour too, needed this heavenly guidance during his ministry. He was anointed by the Holy Spirit at his baptism, and then the Spirit filled, equipped and led him for the next three years, so that He could teach with great authority, heal the sick, and perform astonishing miracles. The Spirit even enabled Christ to endure faithfully the very worst that his enemies threw at him when they tortured and crucified him. By the Spirit, Jesus always walked the “level ground” of trust and obedience to God his Father.
Now risen from the dead and ascended into heaven, Christ sends the gift of his Holy Spirit to the church. His Spirit will lead us in the ways of truth, and He will guide us on the level pathways of his Word.
But to receive this wisdom, we must ask for it. Confess your need, and ask God today for the gift of his Spirit’s leading.

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
In nearly every disciple’s life, there comes a time of loneliness and doubt. It seems as if our prayer requests bounce off the ceiling and fall into broken pieces at our feet. God seems distant, hiding, asleep, or unsympathetic to our cries for mercy and help. Thankfully God gives us the Psalms. In the Psalms, we can find words for almost all of life’s ups and downs. It is nice when we are down to know that others have been there before us and have recovered their faith and vitality. But, there are just some moments in life when we need to have God’s reminders of his love and guidance. This psalm and these words are made for such a time. If the request is not relevant to your need, please pray these words for someone else. If, on the other hand, they speak to you, then please, pray them for yourself!

Psalms 143:8
Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning
Not only externally in the ministry of the word; but internally by the Spirit, so as to feel and perceive, and have some sensible experience of it; which he desired he might have in the morning, early, speedily, by the next morning; it being now night perhaps when he was in this distress, and put up this prayer; see ( 2 Samuel 18:1 ) ; Jarchi interprets it, when the redemption arises or springs out; meaning the deliverance of the Jews from their present captivity: and so Kimchi, of the time of salvation; as a time of distress is called the evening; for in thee do I trust:
alone for salvation; being encouraged by his loving kindness, and the goodness of God being for such that trust in him, ( Psalms 36:7 ) ( 31:19 ) ; the Targum is,
“in thy Word do I hope;”

STARTING THE DAY WITH GOD – Psalm 143:8
Let me hear Your loving-kindness in the morning; for I trust in You; teach me the way in which I should walk; for to You I lift up my soul. (Psalm 143:8)
We can never go wrong when we start the day with God and follow His Holy Spirit’s guidance. Therefore, as we start making physical preparations for the day, we need to remember the words of Jesus, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Our needs, in other words, are not merely physical, but spiritual. Nourishment for the soul is as necessary as food is for the body.
Taking time with God every morning requires practice and discipline. There are dozens of things that may try to pull us away and distract us, but we must ignore them and make time for the Lord. Often the enemy tries to meddle in our lives, so that we think that we do not have time for prayer and meditation and we fool ourselves into believing that we will set aside time later in the day to spend with God.
When we begin the day with God He sends us off in the right direction because He knows what is waiting for us. Trusting Him means taking time with Him to set our course for the day according to His will.
The Psalmist knew that walking with God was inseparably connected to the hard work of spiritual discipline: “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3)
Isaiah wrote that the Lord “wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.” (Isaiah 50:4)
Christians, likewise, must regularly remind themselves that godliness doesn’t just occur. There is a supernatural dimension to Christian living, but unless the believer abides in Christ like a branch remains connected to the vine, he cannot produce fruit (John 15:4). Instead of love, joy, peace and longsuffering, the person who fails to maintain a habit of communion with God will naturally manifest self-centeredness, cynicism, strife and impatience as the dominant characteristics of life.
We need to understand that to meet the challenges, bear the burdens, resist the temptations, solve problems, and fulfil the responsibilities to which one is exposed to each day without first drawing near to God we are doomed for failure.
Jesus, the Son of God frequently rose early and departed to a solitary place to pray (Mark 1:35). The same way, followers of Jesus should make it a habit to prepare in advance for the demands of each day by beginning it in communion with the Father, because He delights to hear the prayers of the upright (Proverbs 15:8). Therefore, we should delight in the opportunity to draw near to Him.
In “the secret place of the Most High” (Psalm 91:1), is where we entrust the cares of the day to God, asking for His blessing, direction and strength, that He might be glorified in and through us.
Once we experience the empowerment of beginning our day with God, we will never want to start it without Him, because when we are walking in fellowship with Jesus, everyone around us can be blessed with the loving presence of the Holy Spirit.

Lord, I commit myself to You and to Your Word each day. I trust You to lead me through every difficult situation I face. I ask for Your guidance and direction every step of the way, and I promise to do my best to give myself wholeheartedly to Your ways. Rescue me from my enemies, Lord, for they are surely out to get me. You are my safety net, Lord, my hiding place. You are able to distract my enemies and hide me from their eyes and their plans — even in plain sight. Rescue me, Lord, but rescue those around me, too — especially my loved ones. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
