I’ve said goodbye to NYC, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end! Follow all my latest scouting posts from the West Coast at: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | TikTok.

After dinner, Popeye and Cloudy follow Charnier back to the Westbury Hotel at 69th & Madison. Opened in 1927, the Westbury was a luxury hotel until 1997, when it was converted into condos.

As Charnier heads inside, we get a shot of the lobby…

…which today is a Gucci store.

The next morning, Popeye resumes tailing Charnier.

They pass by the Palm Superette (a superette is an old word for a deli/bodega):

Today, it’s vacant and just waiting for a new luxury client:

Charnier crosses the street at Madison & 68th Street…

Then stops into Ronaldo Maia Flowers at 27 East 67th Street.

Today, it’s a shoe store:

After sneaking out the back entrance, Charnier disappears into a subway station:

This was filmed at the southernmost entrance along Central Park on Fifth Avenue:

Popeye chases him down the passage…

…and through the turnstiles:

Except Charnier didn’t get on the train! Popeye catches sight of him at 60th & Fifth Avenue and takes off running:

Charnier heads down to the Shuttle train platform at Grand Central, and I have one question…

Whose idiotic decision was it to get rid of this custard stand? Are you kidding me??

Unfortunately, Charnier manages to sneak onto the train, and with a snide wave, he disappears.

On the verge of being taken off the case, Popeye meets his captain at the scene of an unrelated car crash and begs to stay on.

This was shot on the Henry Hudson Parkway North at Exit 24 for the Mosholu:

As Popeye heads home, an assassin working with Charnier attempts to shoot him from the roof of his housing project.

This was shot at the the Marlboro Housing Projects at Stillwell Avenue and Avenue W in Gravesend, Brooklyn:

Popeye spots the fleeing assassin, and so begins one of the most famous car chases in film history. The pursuit begins on foot heading south on Stillwell Avenue toward the Bay 50th Street station:

Popeye runs past the intersection of Stillwell and 28th Avenue…

…then books it into the subway station…

…and up the stairs…

…to the south-bound platform:

The only problem: the assassin has boarded a train on the north-bound side! Popeye races back down – note the Valentine’s Day decorations in the store window:

He tries to flag down passing cars, but no one will stop:

Finally, he manages to commandeer a vehicle…

…and the chase begins! Today, John’s Pizzeria and Terry’s Tailor have become Senda Antiques and the Salt & Sea Mission:

Film locations for The French Connection in New York, Washington DC and France

The French Connection | 1971

The French Connection film location: The greatest screen car chase: Stillwell Avenue, Brooklyn

The real New York locations added a feel of authenticity that helped William Friedkin snap up both Best Director and Best Picture Oscars – and one of the greatest car chases in film history didn’t hurt.

The film kicks off, though, in France, where the doomed detective (though you need to read the script to find out that’s what he is – the movie offers no clue) follows ‘Frog One’, Charnier (Luis Buñuel regular Fernando Rey) and Marcel Bozzuffi through the streets of Marseilles.

From here on in, though, it’s New York, with just a brief glimpse of Washington DC.

The lowlife bar where ‘Popeye’ Doyle (Gene Hackman) gets plastered is on South Street at Market Street at the foot of Manhattan Bridge on the Lower East Side. Not surprisingly, it’s since been demolished.

The toll bridge, where Sal Boca (Tony Lo Bianco) is tailed, is the Triborough Bridge to Randall’s Island at the east end of 125th Street.

The French Connection location: Doyle and Russo stake out ‘Sal & Angie’s’: Mesa Azteca, Wyckoff Avenue, Ridgewood, Brooklyn

‘Sal & Angie’s’ restaurant is now Mexican restaurant Mesa Azteca, 91 Wyckoff Avenue, between Suydam and Hart Streets, in the Ridgewood area of Brooklyn.

The French Connection location: Doyle and Russo stake out the restaurant: Wyckoff Avenue, Ridgewood, Brooklyn

Doyle and Russo stake out the restaurant from the factory across the street.

At seven in the morning, ‘Popeye’ and ‘Cloudy’ Russo (Roy Scheider) stake out famed Kosher deli Ratner’s Restaurant, now gone, which stood at 138 Delancey Street (and was seen also in Boiler Room) on the Lower East Side at the entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge. Once a hangout for gangsters Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel, Ratner’s finally closed its doors in 2002, but its rear area was relaunched as – erm – the Lansky Lounge. Sadly, that too has now closed.

The French Connection location: Russo bumps into Charnier: The Roosevelt Hotel, 45 East 45th Street, midtown New York

Russo first bumps into Charnier, ‘Frog One’, at the entrance to the Roosevelt Hotel, 45 East 45th Street at Madison Avenue, midtown Manhattan. It’s another location used in Boiler Room, and can also be seen on-screen in Maid in Manhattan, Quiz Show, Malcolm X, 1408 and it’s the site of Gordon Gecko’s famous “Greed” speech in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street.

The French Connection location: ‘Frog One’s’ hotel: The Westbury, East 69th Street, New York

Frog One’s hotel was the Westbury, 15 East 69th Street at Madison Avenue on the East Side. It’s closed down, and has been converted into condominiums. He gives Popeye the slip by ducking into the fancy flower shop, Ronaldo Maia Flowers, a couple of blocks away at 27 East 67th Street at Madison, and slips away with the on-off routine on the subway at Grand Central Station.

Sal and Charnier meet up in Washington DC, in front of the the Capitol Building, home of the US Congress.

The French Connection location: Popeye Doyle gets shot at: Marlboro House, Stillwell Avenue, Brooklyn

Popeye’s home is the Marlboro Housing Project, on Avenues V, W and X off Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, where Frog Two takes pot shots at him.

The French Connection film location: Popeye Doyle requisitions a car: Stillwell Avenue, Brooklyn

He requisitions a passing car and begins the movie’s famous chase sequence at Bay 50th Street Station. The car chase filmed (over five weeks) beneath the Bensonhurst Elevated Railway – 26 blocks (count ’em) of Brooklyn’s Stillwell Line from Bay 50th Street Station along Stillwell Avenue, into 86th Street.

The French Connection location: Popeye Doyle catches up with the train: 62nd Street Station, Brooklyn

There’s a final right into New Utrecht Avenue, ending at 62nd Street Station, which is where Frog Two (Marcel Bozzuffi) gets shot.

The French Connection location: Popeye shoots ‘Frog Two’: 62nd Street Station, Brooklyn

The chase was filmed, unusually and not entirely legally, at full speed, with real pedestrians and traffic, though there are five staged stunts too.

The French Connection location: the Manhattan hotel of TV celeb Devereaux: 70 Park Avenue Hotel, Park Avenue, Murray Hill, New York

French TV celeb Devereaux stays at the Doral Park Avenue Hotel, now the 70 Park Avenue Hotel, 70 Park Avenue at 38th Street in the Murray Hill district. Sal picks up the drug-stuffed car from the hotel’s underground car-park just around the corner on 37th Street.

It’s back to the Triborough Bridge for the final drug deal and shoot-out on Wards Island, where Sal’s brother works.
