Selah Set New Year’s Weight Loss Goal to Drop a Combined 260 Pounds by 2016 [Watch Here]

Breathecast

After touring for three to four months straight, award winning worship trio Selah, decided to embark on a challenge for 2015 that will affect both their health and weight.

Group members Amy Perry and Todd Smith took to Facebook at the top of the year to share with their beloved followers what they have committed to do for 2015. The announcement came after the incredible success of their album You Amaze Us and after their Christmas tour.

“We haven’t been home any weekend since August, Perry said, it’s been crazy, and we’re miserable. We’ve gained weight, we’re uncomfortable and we just all talked one night back stage and decided is time for us to make some real life changes with our health and our weight.”

Smith revealed that his goal is to lose 60lbs and Perry said both she and Allan Hall desire to loose 100lbs pounds each. “Collectively Selah wants to loose 260lbs,” Perry declared, “which sounds like an insurmountable [number], but I know we can do this.”

Smith said they have done it before and Perry agreed revealing that before her son, Josiah, was born she lost 80lbs. Their goal is to lose all the weight before their two cruises by Feb. of 2016.

If we start Jan. 1 then that gives us 13 months to get ourselves right,” Perry continued, “so we are asking you to pray with us, pray for us, join us.”

Selah did not reveal their exact weight loss plans, but Perry did say she was starting with a sugar detox and Smith said he was doing Advocare. Watch the full video on Facebook HERE and join Selah in getting fit for 2015.

The Occupied Optimist

“Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.” ~Ecclesiates 5:19-20

Selah: You Deliver Me

Adult Contemporary Selah: You Deliver Me Curb Records

CBN.com – HOPE IN THE FACE OF TRAGEDY

When the members of Selah chose to record “It Is Well with My Soul” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” for their 1999 debut, Be Still My Soul, they had absolutely no idea how such potent hymns would help them through unfathomable tragedy a decade later. Selah knew the remarkable circumstances under which the timeless classics were written. (Horatio Spafford penned “It Is Well with My Soul” after all four of his young daughters died in an 1873 disaster at sea. In 1932, renowned musician Thomas A. Dorsey composed “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” out of grief when both his wife and infant son succumbed to complications during childbirth.) Even as Selah marked its 10th anniversary by recording the new album, You Deliver Me, the group was working on songs that would soon seem more intended for them than Selah’s fans. Todd’s wife, Angie, was 18 weeks pregnant with their fourth daughter, Audrey Caroline, when they received the news. A routine ultrasound revealed that their developing baby was experiencing complications. Doctors said her kidneys weren’t functioning and her heart was much too large. Each of these was a lethal condition. There was no amniotic fluid, and Audrey’s lungs were not developing. Overwhelmed, Angie and Todd sought the opinions of other doctors and specialists. The general consensus was that baby Audrey would die in the womb, and that if she did survive her actual birth, she would likely gasp for breath, living for a minute at the most. The primary doctor voiced expectations that Angie and Todd would choose to have an abortion. “Four months before we got the news about Audrey,” recalls Todd, “we encountered a couple who had lost a trisomy baby that had lived about eight days. And they were just incredible, the way they handled it. I remember thinking, ‘How could anybody go through that?’ And one of the things they said was, ‘We wanted to be able to say before our three-year-old daughter that we praised the Lord regardless of what He chose to do with our baby, that He would get the most glory.’ And I was just blown away by that, thinking, ‘I could never do that. There’s no way.’ And then when we found out about Audrey, that was one of the first things that came to my mind and really stayed with me.” As Angie and Todd anticipated Audrey’s birth, they concluded a C-section would be the best way to approach it. “That would give Audrey the greatest possibility to live,” he explains. “Angie was just so brave,” says Todd. “She was in so much pain because there was no amniotic fluid. She just sacrificed her body.” And then the moment arrived. “When Audrey came out, we got to hear her cry, which we thought we would never get to do,” reveals Todd. “And I got to see her move just a little bit. We brought her over to Angie, and we just wept. Everything that we could think of to tell her right there, we did. She just had this beautiful little face. And her sisters and many relatives got to see her. She lived for about two-and-a-half hours and never gasped for breath. There was no screaming. It was just so peaceful. In fact, it was the most peaceful day I’ve ever experienced in my life. I would have never thought that was possible, but there was so much joy. We were with our girl, and we wanted to show her off to everybody. God just really turned a horrible experience into something amazing.” Shortly after learning Audrey’s condition would be terminal, Angie found herself compelled to write a love letter, a song, to the precious daughter living inside her. Angie wrote “I Will Carry You” as a way to tell Audrey about experiences she longed to have with her, but knew the two would never share. Once Todd and their friend Christa Wells (who wrote the hit “Held” for Natalie Grant) put the finishing touches on Angie’s song, Todd, Amy Perry and Allan Hall recorded it for Audrey’s forthcoming memorial service. As the Smiths spent the weeks following Audrey’s death trying to come to grips with what they had experienced, life unleashed yet another harsh blow. Merely a month-and-a-half after Audrey’s passing, Todd’s sister Nicol Sponberg suddenly lost a child of her own. She had laid her two-month-old son Luke down for bed one evening. When she checked on him a short while later, she noticed he looked different. She turned him over, knew immediately he was gone and let out a scream for her husband Greg. Paramedics rushed to the scene and worked on baby Luke extensively to no avail. “He was this beautiful boy, super strong, really big,” says Todd. “It was SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). We just couldn’t believe it. It’s like, ‘God, what are You doing? Why is this happening again? We’ve had one life taken and that’s enough!’ I actually started to wonder, okay, who’s next?” Amidst unimaginable grief, the Smiths and their extended family had a foundational choice to make. “What were we going to choose to believe? Is God going to be the God of just the good times, or is He also good and faithful in this horrific time that we just don’t understand? We chose to trust Him. And it’s not been easy, there have been—and still are—major ups and downs, but we believe He is good,” says Todd. “You need to be honest about your desperation and honest about how awful it is. And it is horrible. You deal with these different contrasts where you have disbelief and incredible pain and anger and frustration and unanswered questions, and, at the same time, there’s this incredible peace and this hope, and you’ve got nowhere else to go. You find strength through prayer, and people praying for you, and in God’s word. We’re still going through it, and Nicol and Greg are still going through it, and we don’t try and candy-coat it.” MOVING FORWARD

In 2005, Nicol, who co-founded the group with Todd and Allan, left to pursue work with her husband’s ministry and a less-demanding solo career. After Melodie Crittenden, a friend of Allan and Todd’s from college, filled in for seven months, Allan and Todd were at a loss for Nicol’s permanent replacement. Throughout Selah’s career, the group’s key decisions had always been made with relational integrity in mind. The only option left at that point—holding impersonal auditions with vocalists they had never even met—was anything but relational. “That was a scary time,” says Todd. “We thought Selah might be done.” After much prayer and wise counsel, Allan and Todd became convinced the group should continue. Stepping into personally uncharted territory, they auditioned 15 recommended vocalists. When Amy Perry stepped up to the microphone, her stunning soprano voice mastered both Selah’s melodies and harmonies. Even though Amy had never heard Selah’s music when she was tipped off about the group’s opening, a mutual friend assured her the fit would be excellent in more ways than one. “Not just musically and vocally,” says Amy, “She insisted I would click with them spiritually and relationally, and she was right.” Amy debuted on Selah’s Broken Road: The Duets Album in 2006. “They learn she’s more than an incredible vocalist,” explains Allan. “Each night when she speaks from stage, God uses her to minister to broken, hurting people in unique ways.” As she explains, “There are two things I talk about in concert. My husband went through a divorce before we ever met. His wife left him, and he was devastated. God eventually brought him to a place of healing and really restored him into direct relationship. After hearing me talk about God’s restoration the first time, Todd and Allan urged me to share it every time we’re on stage, especially since 50 percent of Christian marriages—like others—end in divorce.” Amy’s honest, relatable approach takes her into more immediately vulnerable territory as well. “I also share about my struggle with my weight,” she says. “How I had a boyfriend who told me I was too overweight to marry, and how I lost a bunch of weight for the wrong reasons. God has really allowed me to have this platform with Selah where I can say, ‘I’m a real girl, I have real problems—look at me, I’m clearly not thin—but I’m okay with who I am, and it’s taken me this many years to get here.” She adds, “I believe the best ministry is when you’re just being yourself and telling your story of what God’s done for you.” Selah performs “Unredeemed,” a hopeful and deftly-produced song about unfulfilled dreams, painful experiences, and other circumstances yet to be made right. “Every time we hear that a person’s life has been changed through what happened to us, it gives weight to Audrey’s life,” he says. “My little girl, who was in the womb for 32 weeks, has made more of an impact on people than I probably will my whole life.”

Amy Perry Shares Her Experience With the Grace and Strength Lifestyle

Amy Perry – of Selah

To say that this ministry has changed my life would be an understatement. I’ve battled weight issues my entire life. I was even told that I would be, ‘beautiful if I would just lose some weight.’ My self esteem became non-existent and I began eating to fill the void. I’ve done diets and lost weight over the years, but was never able to keep it off.

In May of 2010 my husband and I started seriously talking about starting a family, and for the first time in my life I looked at the scale and knew that I could not start a family until I got myself right. I was 282 pounds and miserable. I had sinus and ear infections every six to eight weeks and I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. So I cried out to God. For the first time I asked Him to help me lose weight

I began the Grace and Strength diet on May 19, 2010 with a goal of 100 pounds. I’ve made 70% of that goal in 6 months. It’s a little harder for me to be on the protocol because of my travel schedule, so I’m a little slower to lose than most, but even if I hadn’t lost a pound, what I’ve lost emotionally has been worth the journey. I’ve lost anger, bitterness, rebellion, feelings of no self-worth; I’ve lost grudges over past wounds. God is so amazing. I had no idea what to do or who could help me, but He knew, and even better, He put into action the very person equipped to help me. I didn’t have to do it alone. I didn’t have to struggle, feeling like I was the only person in the world feeling like I did. He sent me Cyndi and CBM, and with it, He has transformed me.”

Selah Launches New Label, Releases 16th Album, ‘Step Into My Story,’ Nov. 6

Reflecting Influences from the U.S., Congo and India, Selah’s Music and Outreach Pours Out on Nov. 6 Album, ‘Step Into My Story’

Selah means “pause” in Hebrew — a concept which plays a thematic role in this group’s new album, Step Into My Story (Nov. 6, 2020 via 3Cre8tive). Released on their newly-formed label, the group’s 16th album invites listeners to pause, reflect and share their own stories.

Dove Award-Winning Group Celebrates Change, Invites Listeners to Share Their Stories As They Pause Amid Today’s Busy And Stressful Climate

“Our band name means ‘to pause’ — we borrowed it from the Psalms, and it’s appropriate for us right now because we literally paused, reevaluated our past, thought through next steps and are moving forward with the most incredible team and fan base anyone could ask for,” says Selah’s Todd Smith.

Allan Hall agrees, “These songs are personal and, because of COVID-19, we had time off the road to tighten things up — both personally and professionally. My personal journey includes losing more than 75 pounds and feeling healthier than I ever have; all of us have taken steps to see and create positivity during this time. We’re looking forward to hearing our fans’ stories!”

“I never thought I’d be homeschooling while releasing an album, and moving — but here I am!” says Amy Perry. “This record is our debut as label founders and there’s such a freedom and joy in this. Like seeing your child take their first steps. Like Allan said, we are here because of more than 23 years of music and incredible fans who allow us to do what we love doing.”

It’s not just a job — it’s a calling. Todd was raised in Congo, Africa, and is still involved with the Laban Bible Institute that his family founded over 40 years ago, and whose students have planted over 400 churches. His parents also started a medical dispensary, a women’s literacy program, and a radio station that has a potential reach of 8 million people. In addition, he and the band also support OneChild.org, a child sponsorship organization based in the U.S. that, to date, has served more than 14,000 children across 14 countries.

One of these children is Marcus Rixon. Now 33, Marcus was born into poverty in Kolkata, India. He was sponsored through OneChild for 14 years, and received an education, food and clothing. In August 2010, he bought a plane ticket to the U.S, and with only $50 in his pocket, boarded his first-ever flight — traveling from Kolkata to London, London to Chicago, Chicago to Louisville, and then drove to Wilmore, KY where he attended Asbury University and earned a Bachelor’s degree.

10 years later, Marcus Rixon — a husband, father, and proud U.S. citizen as of August 2019 — owns Rixon Entertainment Group which manages artists… including Selah.

“Talk about full circle!” says Marcus. “Being sponsored by the same organization that the artist you manage helps raise funding and awareness for — it’s incredible. If anyone ever doubts the validity of a sponsorship program, OneChild is the reason I’m here and I’m beyond grateful to Selah for their diligence and constant support on behalf of children like me.”

With Step Into My Story releasing the same week as our nation’s presidential election, the 8-time GMA Dove Award-winning band is hoping its songs offer a sense of unity and a reason to pause, take a breath and reflect.

The first track, “Step Into My Story,” is available at DSPs now, and the album releases November 6.

Tune in to TBN at 7PM CT on October 30th to find out if Selah will pick up one or both of its 2020 Dove Awards for last year’s offering, Firm Foundation (Integrity Music).

Selah | Step Into My Story

For a beloved group that has forged a strong connection with its audiences over more than two decades, recording a new project can be like walking a creative tightrope. There’s always the desire to be innovative and serve up something new and different, yet there’s a responsibility to give the audience what they’ve come to love and expect or risk losing members of the faithful following. Few artists successfully navigate those two expectations better than Selah. The veteran trio prove it again on its 16th album Step Into My Story, an engaging collection that blends potent new songs with beloved classics delivered from a fresh perspective. With more than half-a-billion streams, over 4 million albums sold, and 8 GMA Dove Awards to their credit, Selah’s Allan Hall, Amy Perry and Todd Smith have earned a reputation for not only delivering compelling new anthems but also for reviving great hymns of faith. With their soaring harmonies and distinctive lead vocals, they have breathed new life into timeless musical treasures that have ministered to believers for generations. Released on newly-launched record label, 3Cre8tive, Step Into My Story continues the Selah tradition of updating revered hymns and introducing powerful new songs of inspiration for times such as this.

AMY PERRY | SELAH

Best known for her effortless yet powerful vocals from the acclaimed, Dove Award-winning group Selah, Amy Perry has become the longest-running female member of the talented trio. Perry joined the group in 2005 and has now become an integral part of the “Selah sound.”

“I always sang in church, and had always wanted a record deal because I knew I was born to sing. It wasn’t until I met Todd and Allan and heard Selah, that I realized how much I really wanted a career in Christian music; not just to have the record deal, but to really make a difference in people’s lives,” says Perry in a 2019 CCM article. “I remember my very first show with them – people coming through the autograph line one after the other, sharing how [Selah’s] music had so deeply touched their lives. That’s when I knew I was where God meant for me to be.”

Perry also released a solo album in 2014 titled “Glory All Around” and does numerous speaking engagements for women’s events where she captivates attendees with her down-to-earth speaking style and, of course, her singing. “I’ve been through some stuff that hurt me and left me feeling worthless,” Perry says. “If sharing that helps someone realize they are beautiful and of value, then I’ll share it forever.”

“If there is one thing to add to your bucket list it is to hear Selah’s live rendition of ‘Amazing Grace,’” says longtime Selah producer Jason Kyle Saetveit. “After hearing that song, you will know all there is to know about Amy. She wows you with her powerful, God-given gift of singing and draws you in with her authentic presentation. She is a natural talent. When you have the joy of seeing her (and all of Selah) at a live performance, you feel that she is singing for and with you, not at you. That is the mark of a naturally gifted performer and worship leader. Even though she is a world-class vocalist, you don’t feel it is all about ‘her’ as much as about the audience, the song and God.”

ALLAN HALL | SELAH

Best known as the tenor on the ivory keys from the critically-acclaimed, Dove Award-winning group Selah, Allan Hall has quietly etched his way into the hearts of music lovers for more than twenty years. Allan offers his own very personal, genre-defying mix of songs about life.

Allan’s parents recognized a love of music and a keen ear in their son early on. As a child, his musical diet was comprised of everything from bluegrass and gospel to rock, pop, R&B, country, and classical. When he turned 7, Allan’s parents surprised him with an old upright piano and he spent a great deal of time fine-tuning his piano playing by ear. He learned songs by listening to his parents’ records and from hymns he heard in his family’s home church.

When Allan moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University, he continued to hone his talent serving as an accompanist for aspiring artists at the school. Getting his first taste of life in the spotlight, Allan spent a summer playing for a country music revue at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA. He was also a member of the country band Caney Ridge. Before disbanding in 1998, Caney Ridge performed regularly and had opened shows for Clay Walker and Sammy Kershaw.

Another of Allan’s dreams came true in 2004 when he signed his solo record deal with Curb Records and released his first album, House of a Thousand Dreams. In 2014, he released a second project, Work of Love.

He continues to record with Selah and as a solo artist.

TODD SMITH | SELAH

Art is often birthed from struggle. Expressing the heart’s most vulnerable emotions can be both cathartic and beautiful, as history has proven time and again. For one of Christian music’s most prolific vocalists, Todd Smith, life has undoubtedly inspired his art. While the depths of suffering, including the loss of a child and a serious illness, have profoundly affected Todd and his family, he’s emerged with an unquenchable thirst to create—to make music, offer hope, and challenge complacency.

“There have been so many times that I’ve been in a place of depression and anxiety, overwhelmed and wondering how to make it through,” says Todd. “Looking back, I can clearly see how God has provided hope and brought me through time after time.”

Surviving malaria as a teenager growing up in Congo, Africa, where his family served on the mission field, Todd experienced God’s faithfulness in the midst of what seemed like a hopeless time. Years later his faith would be tested again when he and his wife, best-selling author and speaker Angie Smith, suffered the loss of a child. Their fourth daughter, Audrey, spent a mere two and-a-half hours cradled in her parents’ arms before God called her home. “It was one of the most horrific things I’ve ever been through,” Todd says. “I didn’t know how our marriage would survive or how I would even get through. I had to beg for the strength to believe and trust that He would pull us through the nightmare. You never want to think that God wills bad things to happen, but I do believe there is a purpose for all things, and He can and will use any circumstance for His glory. And I know when I get to heaven I will fall down and worship at the feet of Jesus and then rise and say, ‘Where is she?’ I will find my little girl and spend eternity by her side.”

While his family is by far Todd’s most important priority, he’s also an advocate for Christians living in persecution. “Four years ago, I was asked to write music for a documentary based on the book, ‘The Insanity of God,’ by Nik Ripkin,” Todd says. “It lit a fire in me to care about a group of people I had never given much thought to before.” “Dmitri’s Song (Jesus Is Alive)” is devoted to the plight of the persecuted Church. Penned by Todd, along with Ed Cash, the song poignantly recounts the true story of a Russian pastor imprisoned for his faith for 17 years, showing unfathomable courage in the face of torture.

“Life will always have challenges,” Todd concludes. “The Bible tells us we will have troubles. But it also assures us that we will never be forsaken. Even in our darkest hour, the Light of life, love and grace never flickers or dies out.”

Selah

Whether they’re singing time-honored hymns or offering their own take on popular songs like Secret Garden’s “You Raise Me Up” and Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road,” Selah knows how to carry a tune in a way that really resonates with the hearts of the masses.

Originally consisting of Allan Hall, Nicol Sponberg, and Nicol’s brother, Todd Smith, Selah has earned a reputation for its dynamic vocals on songs that minister to the broken and discouraged. The group’s ability to open up and become vulnerable by sharing their personal struggles and shortcomings has made them even more relatable from stage. After Nicol left the group to spend more time with her family, Amy Perry took her place and fit right into the mold that Selah had formed.

“At many shows, I’ve shared about my struggle with my weight,” Amy says. “I had a boyfriend who told me I was too overweight to marry, and how I lost a bunch of weight for the wrong reasons. God has really allowed me to have this platform with Selah where I can say, ‘I’m a real girl, I have real problems—look at me, I’m clearly not thin—but I’m okay with who I am, and it’s taken me this many years to get here.’”

While Selah had impacted countless lives, the songs they sang brought healing to themselves during the next chapter of their lives. The band was hit with tragedy with the loss of Todd’s daughter, Audrey Caroline, who faced several life-threatening health conditions while still in the womb, as well as the death Nicol’s infant son Luke to SIDS.

Considering the circumstances, it would’ve been understandable if Selah had decided not to finish its next project—or call it quits altoghether. But as it turns out, the album they’d be working on, a collection of hymns titled You Deliver Me, actually ministered to them.

“It was amazing what songs we had picked—obviously not knowing what was going to happen,” Allan shares. “Hymns are so strong, so well written. They have lasted for hundreds of years for a reason. A lot of them were written out of places of pain and sorrow, yet there’s so much hope in them, and that resonates with people.”
