Fender Precision Bass Steve Harris Signature 2015
For as long as we can remember, Harris has been using his beloved mid-70s Fender Precision Bass guitar. In fact, you can find clips from the very early days of Maiden with Harris playing the same bass. His bass has had a lot of finishes over the years, however more recently he has been sporting a white finish with the West Ham Football Club emblem. Other ironclad features include a single powerful Seymour Duncan Steve Harris signature model pickup and a Fender HiMass bridge.
Lado Steve Harris Signature Unicorn Bass
During a very small stint around the time of Powerslave, Harris and fellow guitarist Dave Murray were both endorsed by Lado. It was during this time that the band had experimented with a range of different sounds and tones, before reverting back to their classic stylings that made Iron Maiden the legendary act that they are today. Finding one of his Signature Unicorn Basses could be a bit of a challenge today.

You may be shocked to hear this, but yes, the dirty and booming bass lines of the legendary bassist come from Harris’ 4×12 cabs. Well it isn’t just any cab; it’s a Marshall. Staying true to his UK roots, Harris has used Marshall amps for a number of years. The cabs are slightly different to the standard models however, with the units loaded with EVM12L speakers. As Harris explains, “They’ve got full duty EV speakers in them and I do get the full range, from the top right through to the bottom. It’s a good tight sound — not so much a bottom end rumble.”
Trace Elliot GP12X Pre-Amp
There isn’t too much to Steve Harris’ rig, however a Trace Elliot GP12X Pre-Amp has been spotted numerous times on stage. Trace Elliot products aren’t that well-known in the Mixdown office, however by the looks of this pre-amp, it is well kitted. The pre-amp features MIDI control, valve/solid state preamp section, 12 band graphic EQ, Harmonic Emphasis, switchable, variable valve gain, noise reduction as well as two stereo effects loops – one full range, one high pass.

Since its introduction in the mid 1970’s, the dbx 160 series has been the world’s most popular line of audio compressors. Harris uses 2x DBX 160A Compressors in his rack. One is the main compressor the other is a backup, in case the main one fails.

Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris: Why I Decided to Play Bass
Steve Harris is an undisputed bass legend. But, with his love of melodic music, what made him decide to pick up the bass when he made the decision to learn an instrument? The Iron Maiden founder explained just that in our sit-down interview in advance of the release of The Burning from his side band British Lion.
Before getting into why he opted to learn how to play bass, we had to know what first inspired him to want to play music at all. That tale starts, unexpectedly, with the game of chess.
“A friend of mine in school, I used to go over his house and play chess. He used to put all this stuff on in the background,” Harris explained. “I’m sure he was doing it trying to put me off my chess game,” he continued, admitting the music in the background was a bit of a distraction. “It was putting me off my chess game because I was trying to listen, going, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.’
“In the end, I said to him, ‘Can I borrow some of your albums?’ So he gave me albums by Black Sabbath, Wishbone Ash, Jethro Tull and stuff like that. I took them home and played them,” the bassist relayed. Now overwhelmed by what he was hearing, he confirmed, “That was it. It changed my life completely.”
Before this, music was still a factor in Harris’ life as his aunts and uncles exposed him to The Beatles as well as Simon and Garfunkel. His parents also bought him his first single — the theme from the 1960 film Exodus — due to his affinity for music he heard in film, which, perhaps explains the orchestration that would later be introduced into Iron Maiden’s music.
It’s known he loves melodies, so, again, why the bass? Well, he actually wanted to play drums at first, but that didn’t pan out. Instead, he sought to improve upon what else he was hearing in the rhythm department. “I thought if I can’t play drums, I’ll play along with the drums rhythmically,” Harris revealed, “and I wanted to do something where I thought the bass is just a bit more than plugging along with everyone else.”
So he went out and bought Gibson Thunderbird — the same bass his idols from Wishbone Ash, The Who and UFO all used, despite their widely varying styles — figuring he could get some unique sounds out of it, too. “Worst thing I ever did,” laughed Harris.
With the bass now in hand, Harris has the option of playing with a pick or using his fingers. He was told to learn acoustic guitar first, so he was familiar with using a pick, but found it easier to move around the strings with his fingers. And he could use that flicking technique that has helped define his instantly recognizable sound.

Lado Musical Inc. (popularly known as Lado Guitars, also J.K. Lado & Co. as seen on early-model headstocks) is a Canadian guitar manufacturing company owned and operated by Joe Kovacic (artistic name “Joe Lado”). The company is based in Lindsay, Ontario and produces electric guitars and basses. Vintage-custom, hand made Lado guitars remain some of the most sought after guitars in the world to date.
History [ edit ]
Joseph Kovacic was born in Croatia in 1945. After serving in the Yugoslav People’s Army, he began training as a luthier at the Zagreb School of Guitar Making in Zagreb, followed by two years additional training at Crossman Guitar Works in Vienna, Austria.
Joe immigrated to Canada from Croatia in 1968 and began working for Turner Musical Instruments, a division of Gibson for two years, followed by a job with Hagström Guitars as an inspector for one year.
In 1971, having reached a workable level of English, Joe began his own business called “Joe’s Strings” from a basement shop on Gerrard Street, in Toronto. In 1973, he formed “Lado Musical Inc.” and opened a retail shop on Kingston Road, in Toronto. In addition to building Lado Guitars, Lado had an exclusive repair contract with C.F. Martin Guitars for all of Canada.
Around 1976, the demand for Lado Guitars had grown so much that he moved to a bigger facility in Scarborough. The 1981 Lado catalogue shows Lado Guitars to have moved again to a new facility –this time located on R.R. #1 in Uxbridge, Ontario, with a photographed staff of 13 employees.
In 1987, Lado built a 14’ 3″ tall, 309 lb “Earth” model guitar, deemed “largest built and presumably the loudest playable electric guitar” by the Guinness Book of World Records. The record was held from 1987-1991.
The 1988 Lado catalogue shows Lado Guitars to have moved from the Uxbridge factory to a new one on Warden Avenue, in Scarborough, ON. In the 1988 film Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives!, the band can be seen playing Lado guitars and basses.
In 2003, Kovacic started the “Lado School of Lutherie”, a way to slow down his pace as he was reaching retirement, and also to pass on his craftsmanship and trade secrets to a younger generation of luthiers. Today, Lado Musical Inc. is located in Lindsay, Ontario.
The story behind the “Lado” name [ edit ]
As his major final assignment as a lutherie student, he built a double bass which, upon completion, he gave to a famous Croatian professional folk dance group called “LADO”, named after a Slavic word often used as a refrain in ceremonial songs of Croatia, and is a synonym for words meaning “good”, “love”, and “dear”.
In return for their beautiful handcrafted double bass, the Lado group told Joe that he had their blessing to use the Lado name for his instruments.
Distinctive characteristics of a Lado instrument [ edit ]
Headstocks always show the image of a falcon along with the name of the company. It is not to be confused with an eagle or a hawk, with the exception of the early J.K Lado & Co. headstocks.
Necks are made of multiple laminates of hardwood, rather than one solid block. Three-piece necks are most common.
Most of the classic Lado instruments are “neck-through-body” designs.
The back of the headstock bears a serial number with the model name, or a short-code for the model (such as “SF-1” for a Superfalcon guitar), as well as “CDN” or “CND” to designate the instrument as being Canadian-made.
