Shim Jae-kyung ( Kim Jung-eun ) planned her own kidnap with her high school tutor Lee Jin-soo ( Kim Jae-chul ), now a bar owner, and also her university junior Song Yoo-min ( Baek Soo-jang ). Yoo-min had liked her long time ago, and wanted to help her regain her happiness with her husband, but later felt her husband was not worth her love. Yoo-min was later found to fell to death from his hotel room. Even after her kidnap, Jae-kyung had to keep making plans to make her husband stayed by her side, such as using the 500 million ransom as a bait.

He had an affair with his restaurant manager Jin Sun-mi (Choi Yu-hwa), and they actually planned to poison Jae-kyung. However, the relationship between Yoon-cheol and Sun-mi was not that stable after all, as they often had division especially when the decision involved money. Eventually, Sun-mi worked with Jae-kyung to fake her death, as Jae-kyung promised to give her the 500 million and the restaurant.
The police detective Seo Ji-tae ( Lee Joon-hyuk ) suspected Jae-kyung was behind her own kidnap but could not find any evidence to prove his suspicion. He also suspected Jae-kyung was behind Yoo-min’s death as CCTV showed a woman leaving the crime scene. During his investigation, he found that his wife Kim Hee-jung ( Jung Soo-young ) was involved with Jae-kyung, and also played a part in diverting the ransom. Moreoever, Hee-jung was writing an web novel that was closely similar to Jae-kyung’s story, therefore Ji-tae was worried that Hee-jung would be implicated. Ji-tae eventually understood that his wife needed the encouragement to become the web writer she aspired to be, before losing her own identity to just become a mother of the twins.

However, Jae-kyung then got Chang-beom’s daughter to pretend to be kidnap (so that Chang-beom would visit her) to get both Yoon-cheol and Chang-beom to return her the 500 million. From then on, Chang-beom did not want the 500 million, but continue to investigate on the relationship between Jae-kyung and Jin-soo.
Ha Eun-hye (Shim Hye-jin) was Jae-kyung’s neighbor who seemed to be happily married to a younger husband Jo Min-kyu (Yoon Jong-seok). However, they were not legally married but had a 10-years contract to pretend to be a married couple. Eun-hye was in debt due to failed business, while Min-kyu was working as a male sex worker. Both wanted to find the 500 million for themselves. Eun-hye went to Yoo-min’s hotel room to find the 500 million, just when Yoo-min returned to his room. In their fight, Eun-hye threw Jae-kyung’s portrait out of the window, which Yoo-min tried to retrieve, thereby falling to his death. Min-kyu then kidnapped Jae-kyung to get the 500 million when the police were suspecting Eun-hye to be involved in Yoo-min’s death. Although reluctant to save Jae-kyung initially, Yoon-cheol eventually went to save Jae-kyung, even shielding her from a knife stab. Jae-kyung then proposed helping Eun-hye and Min-kyu to escape with the 500 million, and they both then lived the life of escaping from the police wherever they go. Min-kyu refused to leave Eun-hye although he had no obligations to take care of her.
Yoon-cheol and Jae-kyung then stayed with Yoon-cheol’s sister as their house was burnt. However, Yoon-cheol received 1.6 billion insurance payouts for Jae-kyung’s kidnap by Eun-hye and Min-kyu, which the insurance was bought by Jae-kyung’s parents when they sent her for overseas studies. The additional clause that Jae-kyung’s spouse would be the beneficiary happened to be N31 as well, same as the “identity” of kidnapper for Jae-kyung’s planned kidnap. N31 also referred to November 31, the transition from November 30 to 1 December when Yoon-cheol proposed to Jae-kyung.
Comments:
I was initially attracted to the drama due to the fast pace storyline of a cat and mouse game between Jae-kyung and Yoon-cheol. Sadly to say, probably 16 episodes was too long for such story, the thrill quickly died down even before the show was aired halfway. In the end, I thought it was quite meaningless for Jae-kyung to be forever finding a way to keep her husband by her side by planning all sorts of incidents, because it clearly showed that Yoon-cheol did not have her in mind. I still can understand the rationale of her first planned kidnap, that was to test Yoon-cheol’s love for her, as well as to seek revenge for Yoon-cheol’s infidelity. But subsequent plans were not really necessary unless she needed Yoon-cheol to receive the insurance payouts… but why?
This show is an adaptation of the 2016 Japanese television series Boku no Yabai Tsuma, which I had not watched before, so I would be able to compare between these 2 shows. There were many positive comments towards the Japanese version. I am guessing that the Japanese version is likely to be more fast-paced as Japanese dramas usually were shorter with 10-11 episodes with only 45min per episodes. Based on the same logics, I feel that this show would have been better if the drama was only kept to 8 episodes. Seriously, I was quite undecided whether to recommend this show or not, as the cast had done fairly well in this show, but the story was not captivating enough for anyone to watch the whole series.

So this drama… where to begin. Yes there is a happy ending but I can’t for the life of me not fathom why. I guess it’s this ‘They are married they must make it work’ kind of thinking behind it but I don’t get it. They cheated, tried to kill each other, tried to kill someone else (and actually he believe she was dead), staged a kidnapping, and basically hated each other… but they have a happy end and not only for them but the neighbours who were after the money too – they may be on the run but together and in love? And the chick the husband cheated with, too?
So much happened in this drama that made me think everyone is going to die, but in the end nobody did and everyone is happy and nobody pays for it. I don’t understand it, that is confusing… As much as I love happy endings it did not work with the tone of the rest of the drama for me. But judge for yourself 🙂
