USMC Military Issue 3 Season Sleeping Bag
The Coyote USMC sleeping bag was designed to be a lightweight compatible military sleeping bag for temperatures above 20°F. If combined with the full system of a Bivy, sleeping pad, and proper clothing it is rated to use down to 5°F. The USMC Sleeping bag is very soft, lightweight, and comfortable and in our opinion, it is the best feeling within the military line. The is produced with an antimicrobial liner that helps to protect against the growth of microorganisms, baffle tubing to trap in body heat, and full head closures to keep you warm. The zipper is very easy to use to get in and out. Available in both Medium and Long. We used and tested this bag at about 30 degrees in the Colorado mountains inside a tent. The bag was very comfortable, lofty, easy to pack, and use. Definitely a favorite as a 2-3 season bag.

How To Build A Sleep System
Here at Therm-a-Rest we are a bit obsessed with sleep systems, we hoot and holler about them all the time at HQ. I would call it our mission to design the perfect sleep system, but it’s bigger than that really, it’s more of a quest.
We don’t mean to be dramatic, but we are acutely aware that comfortable night’s sleep outdoors can be the difference between elation and misery. Here we will walk you through building the right sleep system by showing you how to match sleep equipment to individual preferences as well as the conditions present.

What is a Sleep System?
A sleep system is the sum total performance of the things you use to achieve a good night’s sleep outdoors. It can be broken down into three component categories: Sleeping Bags, Sleeping Pads and Pillows.
1. Sleeping Bag or Quilt:
A common image related to camping is zipping yourself up in a warm sleeping bag at night and enjoying a plush human cocoon. This is the insulation component and it is the core of your sleep system.
Traditionally, sleeping bags have been the sole choice for the adventurer in terms of insulation, but in the past few years, quilts have risen in popularity due to their lighter weight and targeted design. Both sleeping bags and quilts use either down or synthetic fill to insulate and achieve their EN/ISO temperature ratings. Picking the right fill type, the appropriate temperature rating, and the right size is how you arrive at a solid choice for component #1.
2. Sleeping Pad:
By inventing the self-inflating mattress in 1972 Therm-a-Rest did wonders for sleep systems long before anyone was calling them sleep systems. We dramatically improved outdoor sleep by creating a cushioned yet stable surface that provided much more insulation than the thin closed-cell foam pads of the day.
It has been nearly a half-century since the original Therm-a-Rest sleeping pad and let’s just say options have expanded. It is important to take a close look at the R-value of any pad because this measures how much the pad insulates you from the ground; the higher the number the more insulation the pad provides. 3. Pillow:
Not much to explain here. Even if you have limited space in your pack, you can fit the Air Head™ Lite in your pocket on the way out the door. 4. Bonus Category: Clothing!
When measuring the EN/ISO temperature ratings of sleeping bags in our cold chamber, the sensor-loaded mannequin that tests the bag is wearing clothes. That’s right, it is wearing base layers, which means sleeping bag temperature ratings assume that a real user is wearing clothes. Base layers are critical to staying comfortable all day and all night.
A warm hat and fresh socks stave off frigid temps, while a dry base layer on top and bottom ensures that your sweat doesn’t leave you chilled.
How do Sleep Systems Work?
Being warm, or simply just the right temperature, is one part of thermal efficiency. This part is achieved by a system that provides the right amount of insulation and breathability. The other part is being the right temperature with minimum weight and packed size.
Dialing in your sleep system saves weight with more efficient gear choices. It saves energy by protecting you from harsh conditions to maximize the value of your body heat. It fulfills the number one rule of recreating outdoors: being prepared. The right gear provides the versatility to keep you comfortable in a wide range of conditions.
A Sleep System for Every Season
You may be wondering to yourself what your ideal sleep system is? That depends on your personal preferences and the nature of the adventures you are undertaking. The components of a sleep system should meet the demands of the sleeper and overcome the challenges of the natural environment.
It’s helpful to look at sleep systems as a function of the seasons. They give a general context for what your sleep system needs to accomplish. Stay warm in the winter. Be ventilated and cool in the summer. You get the idea. Below we put together examples of sleep systems built for general seasonal conditions.
Note: In the infographic at the end we show you how you can have one sleep system for all four seasons by having just four of the right pieces of equipment: A closed-cell foam pad, an insulated air pad, a sleeping bag, and a quilt.
Summer Sleep System:
A Summer Sleep System for mild summer nights give you the flexibility to pare down your kit and shed weight. A quilt offers customizable breathability and a NeoAir® Topo™ provides plenty of ground insulation and big comfort.
Fall Sleep System:
Dwindling temperatures demand more warmth, it’s time to break out your trusty down sleeping bag. Consider adding a closed-cell foam pad to boost your ground insulation.
Winter Sleep System:
Winter camping means it’s time to carry more weight and plan a bit harder to stay warm. Building a Winter Sleep Systems means layering your sleeping pads and adding a quilt over your sleeping bag. Done properly and it will be hard to leave your cozy tent in the morning.
Spring Sleep System:
Despite the promise of warming temperatures and thawing landscapes, the rain, snow and cold weather linger. You can both be prepared and lighten your load by simply leaving the extra pad at home.
Finding the Right Sleep System for You
No matter which season, the components of a sleep system should meet the demands of the sleeper and overcome the challenges of the natural environment.
For example, pretend you are a side sleeper in the Pacific Northwest, where it rains a considerable amount. Aim for roomier sleeping bag to accommodate side sleeping. Also, synthetic fill maintains its insulation performance when wet better than down. If you sleep on your side, look for pads that are at least 2 inches thick and sleeping bags that allow you generous range of movement. Those minimizing pack weight on a multi-day backpacking trip may select an entirely different system than those doing a quick and comfy overnighter in similar weather.
I have spent a lot of time at high altitudes in Colorado, where a balmy day in August can be a winter affair by sundown. Cloudless skies become harassing thunderstorms in the early afternoon. By carrying a system appropriate for a shoulder season, I feel confident I can end each day with the rest needed to take on the next.

3 Season Sleep System
The 3-season sleep system (3S) is a single sleeping bag system that is lighter in weight and provides increased environmental protection for all environments except extreme cold weather.
Background
OEF After Action Reports identify a compelling need to provide Marines with a sleeping bag that increases protection from environmental conditions while reducing weight and volume. OEF Marines carried only the modular patrol bag during mountain operations to decrease weight and volume but provided inadequate protection in the cold mountainous environment.
Features
The system includes a sleeping bag , bivy cover , waterproofing compression stuff sack at a total weight of 4.8 lbs as a 10% weight reduction with improved protection.

The system increases temperature by 15 degrees to protect at 20°F and above for wet and dry conditions for 4 hours uninterrupted sleep. Wearing clothing warming layers inside the bag provides protection down to 0°F.
The bivy cover is 18% lighter and provides improved comfort, protection and volume. It allows the Marine to be totally encapsulated under extreme weather conditions. The material is a microporous laminated membrane with highly water repellent exterior. An integrated flexible wire allows the bivy to stand off from the face and a bug proof screen window can be fully or partially opened.
A simple 2 strap compression stuff sack with automatic purge valve is waterproof and packs the system to fit into the bottom of the main ruck.
The system will be fielded to the CIFs and the current Modular Sleep System will be the Arctic Bag in the Cold Weather Gear Inventory.

The sleeping bag is made with a light weight compactable batting that provides a minimum 5.3 CLO rating, allowing the user to sleep comfortably in temperatures above 20°F. When used with the IBC, a ground insulator pad and proper clothing, intermittent use down to 5°F is achievable. This bag is also produced with an anti-microbial inner liner that helps to protect against the growth of microorganisms that can be dangerous to the user.
Improved Bivy Cover
When fully encapsulated in the IBC, the user is provided maximum environmental protection. The waterproof IBC is also made of a micro-porous (gas permeable) laminated fabric with sealed seams that allows the user to sleep fully encapsulated without respiratory distress in adverse conditions -40°F and above.

This bag allows the components to be stored in an open environment with little compression and maximum ventilation.

One of the four components of the Three Season Sleep System (3S) The WSS provides waterproof storage of the Sleeping Bag and Bivy Cover and will fit into the bottom of the Improved Load bearing Equipment (ILBE) main pack. Waterproofing is achieved by the stuff sacks fabric, bag construction and closure design. The bag is constructed utilizing Radio Frequency fabrication, with no sewn seams for maximum waterproofing. The smooth internal and external surfaces facilitate packing. Volume reduction is accomplished by the shape, hands-free waterproof air purge value and two compression straps for end to end length reduction.
