I saw stair steps of burden reach high into the air. On each riser, a person lay face down on the step, unable to look around. The first riser was only minor burdens, according to worldly standards, and the top riser was significant and painful burdens. No tormented person could move their heads, nor could they speak.
“What are we to do it looks so hopeless?”
“Watch and see.”
Suddenly the entire landscape shifted. Every stair-step leveled and then re-formed and united they became a hedge of protection, a type of boundary wall. The freed people’s faces shone as they began to talk and walk around.
“What happened?”
They surrounded their burdens and right to be upset and began to pray for other people’s burdens. The moment their eyes lifted to Me they were set free.
“Is it that simple?”
“If you believe My word is true, then search it out.”

I agree with T.A. Webb that, “A burden shared is a burden halved.” Not because it was said by man but because it reflects the truth of the Bible.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16)
This is such a common verse in my circle of friends I almost failed to meditate on its purpose. This foundational verse is why we need to pray for each other and it should not be overlooked.
I dug deeper:
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal. 6:2, ESV)
This clearly had significance for what the Lord was trying to show me. This is a command to bear one another’s burdens. It then begs the question what is it to fulfill the law of Christ? Which led to the following scripture.
“If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.” (James 2:8, ESV)
When I self-reflect on times I’ve been in trials, I remember my desperate need for other people’s prayers. I needed someone to help me break out of my own faulty thinking. I can become so stuck in my own life I can’t see reality. This is why we need to love our neighbors as ourselves and pray for their specific needs according to how the Lord gives us to pray for them.
Still deeper:
“looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb. 12:2, ESV)
In order to be set free, we must look to Jesus. There is no other way. No other being can give us freedom. He showed us how to walk in freedom. He demonstrated this on the cross when He showed us how to submit to God and serve other people.
“My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the net.” (Psalm 25:15, ESV)
David’s expectancy when he gazes at the Lord is beautiful. I need prayer to bring this reality of expectancy into my life.
I believe the Word has untold depth and that it’s our privilege to explore. I also believe its simple truth has power.
Use God’s word and His victory to put your eyes on Christ. Pray for one another and watch your burdens crumble. They may not become extinct but God will reduce them in your eyes. In fact, I’m praying you use them as a stepping stone to what God has for you.
Prayer for you and me: Lord Jesus, continually direct our eyes to You. We do not desire to let our hearts and minds wander. Give us strength to pray for one another so that in doing so we may lay down our own burdens to experience the miracle of another person receiving Your blessing, protection and miracles. Help us desire to seek out Your Word, to devour that Word, and to stand on Your Word. Thank You, Jesus’ Amen.

As a mother, my desire has always been that my children would grow into competent, independent adults, but not at the expense of developing compassionate, caring hearts for others.
In a world that often promotes individual rights over those of the community, I want to offset that idea with the biblical message that we have a responsibility for the welfare of those around us, that we are to love God and to love our neighbors.
I saw that idea beautifully demonstrated in a small nursery school in Malawi.
Shrieks of laughter abruptly turned into quiet anticipation as 120 children in an AIDS-devastated community lined up for a bowl of hot porridge. For most of them, this was the only meal they had eaten since the previous morning, and they were hungry. Anastasia, the director of the day care center, explained that ninety of the children were orphans living in child-headed households and they would have no other opportunity to eat that day. Money was tight, and she could only afford to feed them one meal.
Anastasia wasn’t always a day care director, but when her sister died of AIDS and she took on the responsibility of caring for her niece, she decided to include the eighty-nine other children in her community who had also lost their parents to the disease. She was an excellent teacher, and once breakfast was finished, the children showed me what they had learned, reciting in unison the alphabet, numbers, even the months of the year — all in English.
In addition to the few mothers helping at the center, fifteen other local women were working in a nearby field, tending maize. Their goal was to raise enough money selling their crops so the day care center could stay open until 5:00 p.m. instead of closing at 11:30 each morning. Their earnings would also help buy enough food for the children to have a second meal during the school day. The community was pulling together to care for its most vulnerable members — the children — by bearing the burden resulting from the deaths of so many parents.
The community was living out what the apostle Paul identified as a fundamental part of the life of every believer:
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).
Anastasia and a handful of other women in her community took that message to heart. They assumed responsibility for the child-headed households of Senzani, Malawi, and took upon their own weary shoulders the burdens those ninety orphans otherwise would have carried alone.
As members of God’s family, the welfare of others is our concern. Is there a brother or sister whose burden you could help lift today?

A Burden Shared Is Often a Burden Halved…
I am such a girl. If pop psychology is to be believed, when men are concerned they compartmentalize and leave their worries behind. Not so with me; I fuss and stew and worry and sigh. I wonder about whether or not I should burden friends or family with the heaviness on my heart. But when I do share I find my heart so much lighter. My confidante may or may not have an answer because honestly some of the things on my plate right now don’t have a simple answer. (More on that in another post.) But I find the simple act of talking it through makes my concern so much lighter.
I feel incredibly spoiled to share my life with such amazing friends and family. In the last six months I quit a job, sold a house, helped my mother-in-law buy a condo, moved two households, and recovered from surgery–I’m still working on getting my feet under me. But sharing the concerns and worries that make my heart heavy limits their ability to completely weigh me down.
So if you’re the one with the burdens, share with a beloved friend. If you are in a place of (relative) balance and peace, offer a listening ear! Without being Pollyanna-esque, look for good things to share too. I’m sure we’ll discover the adage’s remaining phrase to be true as well: …a joy shared is a joy doubled.
