Agile AL-3100MCC 2TS Flame

Customer Comments:

Hi Kurt, I’ve been meaning to write you for several weeks now. I purchased an AL 3100 MCC from you in root beer flame. I’ve gotta tell you, this is an amazing guitar! I was waffling on picking up a used Gibson when three different friends told me it would be worth my while to check your website. I spent a couple days agonizing over finish choices and settled on the root beer. I haven’t stopped playing it since it arrived! The tone, sustain, setup and playability have had my jaw on the floor more than once. Outstanding hunk of wood (and the case is killer to boot!). I’ll be buying from you again, no doubts. Thank you so much!

My very best, -Kent

Hi Kurt, I have purchased a few guitars from you and have sent a few customers your way because I like your product and service. Recently I advised a friend (Fred Lennon) who was hell bent on a Les Paul to check out your stuff. I told him to make sure to get one with a maple cap which he did. You really took great care helping him and he has a permanent smile on his face and feels all his expectations were far and away exceeded with the purchase of the AL 3100M. His was light and resonant and played like a dream. Your ear must be tuned to the desires of your customers and it’s nice to see how quickly you develop different product to fit their specific needs. You’ve got a good name out here, a lot of very happy customers and a positive buzz on the web. I’m sure it’s because of your hard work, focus on fit and finish and ever evolving models which is the secret to Rondo’s success. Congrats on another job well done!

Hi! My new Agile3100M has been in my hands two days now. It arrived with no injuries whatsoever. In fact, I cant find even the slightest little defect in the instrument at all. I love the way it looks, feels and sings and I just don’t think I could have made a wiser choice. Thanks so much for your part in providing the opportunity for me to own it. Puts epiphones to shame and is a better instrument overall, in my humble opinion, than the 1980 les paul custom Gibson it replaces. Great work, guys, good luck in the future.

sincerely,

Rondo, I’ve been playing guitar now for 50 years and have owned a lot of guitars in that time. I’ve been playing a Fender Special Edition Tele HH now for about 5 years and wanted to try a Les Paul style guitar. I have never been fond of the LP style guitars in the past but felt that I probably never gave them a fair try. Not knowing whether or not I could ‘bond’ with a LP style guitar, I really couldn’t see spending a lot of money to try one. I did my research, read a lot of reviews/comments on guitar forums and found Rondo Music/Agile. I am simply amazed by my new guitar. Came to me set up very well and I only had to do minor ‘tweeking to suit’ to make this guitar play exactly the way I wanted it to. Beautiful resonance and sustain. I looked this guitar over CLOSELY with a very critical eye and can find no faults. When I purchased the guitar I thought that perhaps I might have to change the pickups, which I’ve done on a lot of my guitars but NO, the stock pickups in this axe will stay! . That is a first for me! I am so impressed that I’m confident that I will be talking to you about a ‘custom made’ guitar in the near future! Thank you so much for the great product and excellent customer service!

Mike

Kurt, I have been playing guitar since 1972, have owned quite a few during those years, and I currently own 15. I’ve had one LP which I never could quite bond with but I believe this Agile is definitely a keeper. I’ve never had an electric guitar that was so easy to set up to my picky spec’s (I raised the action slightly and adjusted the pickup height… everything else was spot on!). BTW, this is my second Rondo purchase… I have an Agile TC as well. Thanks for offering awesome guitars at great prices!

Hello Kurt. Just got my Agile guitar today. All I can say is wow. I’ve been playing for over 40 years now and I have had all kinds of name brand guitars, but never have I had a beauty like this one. It came perfectly set up in MHOP. Action is perfect for me. The workmanship is flawless. From the machine heads to the bridge, fret work, everything. The finish is excellent and I should know because I am a finisher, re-finisher of fine furniture and cabinetry. The tones of the pickups are incredible on all settings. Plays like butter. This will probably make the Gibson Les Paul owner upset but I truly believe it is as good and maybe even a cut above. I still own my Gibson SG that I bought in the sixties and have played many Gibson Les Pauls over the years. I had a good friend of mine come over to take a look and to play it. He asked me what I paid for it and his jaw dropped. Thank You so much and thanks to all the other Agile owners for all their reviews of your guitars. I am glad I went with Agile. The guitar case is perfect also. Not a flaw. Many thanks for a wonderful guitar.

Paul Ramassini. Naples Fl.

Kurt- This guitar looks even better than your website photos, gorgeous in an understated way. I plugged it into a Bugera V5 tube amp, one that does not like my Gibson LP Studio very much. The amp tends to make humbuckers sound overly dark. However, the Agile has plenty of treble through that amp. I was going to get an EQ pedal to brighten the signal up. However, I may just sell the Gibson after hearing how the Agile does, both with the tube amp and a solid state one. I can’t say enough about your great service, and the value for the dollar in the Agile, SX and Douglas products you sell. Also, you provide tremendous variety of choices for us lefties, in contrast with the competition. Thanks again!

Hi, I don’t usually leave testimonials for products, but I had to write and let you know how pleased I am with my new Agile. I have been playing guitar for over 40 years and have never come across such value for the money. I was a little skeptical of the comments I had read, but decided to bite the bullet and place an order. Man am I glad I did. I have to say I have seen nicer guitars but, those instruments were at a minimum six times the price. I cant think of anything I have purchased in the past that I felt was as good a value as this guitar. Out of the box setup was very good, better than most I have seen. Just a few tweaks for my preferences and voila, perfect. The pickups are great, ebony neck is smooth and fast and the finish is very nice. I have shown it to several musicians and they were very impressed, when I told them the price, they didn’t believe me. I had to show them the invoice to convince them. Rondo Music will be the first and probably the only place I’ll look for future instruments. Thanks for an exceptional guitar for an exceptionally low price.

Agile AL-3100 Les Paul Custom

This is a great Les Paul Custom type guitar

Made in Korea

Low action, great sounding guitar.

Much better feeling and sounding than the Epiphones.

This is their higher end one, with better materials and parts.

Real Mahogany Body and Neck, Maple top, Ebony Fretboard, Grover tuners, top notch workmanship and materials. Bridge pickup is stock, neck is a Duncan Designed. There is some sort of crack at the heel which doesn’t cause any problems, may be a finish crack of some type, or heel repair. This doesn’t cause any issues with functionality.

Also someone sanded the gloss off of the back of the neck for a better feel.

Okay, not a lot of folks actually own these guitars so far (cybermgk excepted).

I have an even dozen Agiles, including several 3000 series (3000, 3100, 3200), a couple of AL2000 Floyds, a Cool Cat and an AD2300 (doublecut Special style). Oh, and a custom build.

In terms of “bias,” my first guitar was a Gibson ES-335, and I have nine or ten of various vintages, most are older. I have one Axcess Custom that was purchased about 11 years ago, and nothing since then.I’ve also got a small stack of custom-ish guitars, including Moonstones, Nik Huber, etc., and I have my eye on a Trussart at the moment.

About the weight: most of mine (actually weighed on a digital scale) are in the nine-pound range, and by that I mean 8 lbs 15 ounces, up to 9 lbs 4 ounces. I have a seven-string LP variant with a 27″ scale that I haven’t weighed, that probably weighs more.

All of them have appointments that Gibsons usually don’t even hint at until you get to the Customs: real ebony fretboards, real shell (abalone or MOP) inlays, jumbo hand-filed frets, 14″ radius (or compound radius) fretboards and multi-layer Custom-style binding on the body and headstock and single-layer binding on the fretboard. The “MCC” variant denotes a full 3/4″ (before cooking) maple cap over a solid mahogany body. Most come with a solid one-piece mahogany neck, but the neck-through versions have a multipiece maple and walnut neck. Most are pretty traditional, with standard set-neck Gibson-style construction, but the neck-through (3200) has a carved neck heel like that on a Gibson Axcess, plus a tummy cut for comfort.

There’s no comparison between these and the Hardley-Bentups in terms of quality. I’m basing that on several tours through Winter NAMMs here in January. I haven’t had one in my hands for more than about a week at a time.

Mine date back to about 2004 and all are solid guitars. Most of mine were purchased used, and the asking prices have been around their new prices, though you weren’t paying for shipping, etc. I think the least expensive 3000 series I’ve found has been around $250, and that was a spectacular deal (I thought); bound on top and bottom, and some great P90’s.

I’ve put several of these through a PLEK process. One was fretting out above the 16th fret on 2-stop bends. But that was a B-Stock (due to finish issues). That guitar has been one of my bar guitars for nearly a decade since. I haven’t picked up a modern Gibson that has NOT needed a PLEK job (leastways, if you’re playing with low action) and a fret superglue and a whole lot of tweaking. By the time you haul one down off the Wall or have one shipped to you, it’s been a long time since it’s seen the factory. I’ve had no issues at all with pickups or pots. I think the 3000-3200 series these days comes with a Tusq nut, string saver saddles on an upgraded bridge and good tuners. Just under half of mine currently have different pickups than what came stock from the factory; I like the Suhr Aldrich set, and a couple of them now have those. A previous owner put a super distortion in the bridge of one of the guitars, and I have hot ’57s in the bridge of a couple more. The AD-2300 came with a pair of hand-wound P90’s, courtesy of a previous owner in Canada.

I think the 3200 series may be one of the best guitars on the market, bar none. I’m not sure where you get a neck-through guitar with all that it comes with (including the playability due to the carved neck heel) for that price.

I have to note that I’m absolutely not a fan of nitrocellulose lacquer any more. It’s a crap finish that should have been retired long ago, but tradition overweighs most else at Gibson. The Agiles come with a UV-catalyzed polyester finish, as do most guitars coming out of World Music these days. It’s not overly plastic, and it protects the guitar from sweat, drool, blood, pee, beer and whatever other bodily and adult beverage fluids you’d find on a typical night at a bar gig. I don’t have to worry about what the chemistry might be of whatever I’m leaning the guitar into.

The hard cases you get from Rondo are actually a bargain, and they’re probably within the price range of the better soft cases you’ll find at Guitar Denter. If you get your guitar shipped in a case from Rondo, you’ll pay one price for the two of them together that’s a lot cheaper than having Rondo (or someone else) ship you a case later. I’d honeslty go on a hunt for a used Epiphone hard case in your region. If you can get one for under $75, they’re usually pretty solid. I’ve got Mono single and double cases and a soft case or two. All work.

Agile AL-3100

Agile makes some of the best budget Les Paul copies on the market. These guitars have features that even some Gibsons do not come with. These guitars are made in Korea and their main vendor is Rondo Music. This guitar comes with the classic Les Paul wood combination. It has a mahogany body with a flamed Canadian maple top. The body and headstock have triple binding while the next is bound also. It comes from the factory with Grover tuners. The tuners have an 18-1 ratio to keep you in tune. The guitar features home brand Alnico V pickups which are so good I have heard people will buy the pickups from people second hand. Like any good Les Paul it has two volume and two tone controls with a 3-way toggle switch pickup selector. It features a mahogany neck with an ebony fretboard something not all Gibsons have. The 22 frets on the ebony fretboard are also hand filed so there will be no sharp ends for your hand to get hung up on. It comes from the factory strung up with D’addario strings so its playable right out of the box. Another great feature is the pre-installed aftermarket bridge. It is a Graph Tec NVS2 with string saver saddles. String saver saddles is an upgrade I would recommend to anyone because the sharp points on the Les Paul style bridge can cause wear on strings and in the end cause strings to break. String saver saddles will increase the life and tuning stability of your strings.

UTILIZATION

The ergonomics of this guitar are the same as every Les Paul. The upper frets may be a little hard to reach due to the neck joint. The guitar is solid mahogany with no chambering so it might weight 10 pounds or more. These are all classic hallmarks of the Les Paul design. The hand filed frets are a great touch. Even Gibson nowadays has some trouble with their fretwork. The neck is wide and flat like a Les Paul and that makes it very easy to play and with the ebony fretboard it feels smooth as glass on your fingers.

SOUNDS

This guitar gives a great full Les Paul sound. Many Gibsons today are chambered for lightness. They go in and remove some wood from the inside to make the guitar lighter. Any removal of wood from a guitar will effect the tone. The Agile has the full classic tone that you expect from a Les Paul with a full body of wood. The medium output Alnico V pickups are setup perfectly to give you a classic rock tone. If you are looking to play heavier music you may want to switch the pickups with some aftermarket high output pickups.

OVERALL OPINION

Agile is clearly listening to what people want when they design their guitars. The factory installed aftermarket parts are a huge benefit and something most companies wont do. Grover tuners and D’addario strings along with a string saver bridge. This guitar comes with half your intended upgrades already done. More people should take a look at these small brands before shelling out big dollars for the big name companies. The small companies can make great guitars too and if more people started getting them they could really give the big companies a run for their money. This guitar is a Les Paul no matter what the headstock says and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a Les Paul style guitar.

NGD: Agile AL-3100, blown away

After watching the Agile site forever, I finally saw something very cool come up on the specials page. A Tobacco Burst AL-3100, being sold as a second. (a buddy bought a birds eye maple AL-3100 and I played it a few times, it was nice enough to make me VERY interested in Agile). This guitar finish, which is like a honey burst but was sold as a tobacco burst, is virtually flawless. It’s a plain maple top with some figuring, nothing special BUT it’s a single piece of maple, wow. The MOP inlays, very tasteful and cleanly done. If I hadn’t KNOWN there was a flaw to look for, it would have taken me a while to find it.I went over this guitar in the sunlight looking for flaws, bad fret work (exceptional), anything because it was a blem, it only cost me $310 with shipping. I opened up the control areas, all shielded, alpha pots. It’s got the reso-max graph tech bridge and if anything, the action is set a little too low though the guitar intonated spot on out of the box.I will say the pickups might need removal (I am used to a rosewood board, may need to tame the ebony a little) but I’ve only played it about 15 minutes, what do you think??Full shot:Detail on top, hard to see figuring:Blem location normal (see if you can see it):Blem location enlarged and enhanced:

Agile AL-3100

My review of my new Agile AL-3100 It is simply put an amazing guitar for the money. I’ve never played any guitar in the price range that can rival how good this guitar is. I’ve played Epi Les Paul standards before and this is just a whole lot nicer for almost $100 less! The guitar just looks beautiful. The finish and flamed maple veneer look very nice, and the binding is also done very well. The guitar is also very heavy (a whopping 10 pounds!), and I’m not used to the weight so in only about 10-20 minutes of standing up playing yesterday my shoulder was killing me.I just love the neck on this guitar. I’m very glad I went with the wide neck because it is one of the nicest necks I have ever played. The width to it is nice and makes the strings slightly further apart making it easier for me to keep any sound I don’t want muted. I really like the ebony fretboard. This is my very first one to play and I really like the smooth feel to it, plus the black with mother of pearl inlays just looks great. My only complaints about the neck is I feel it is a little to thick, don’t get me wrong it fits nicely in my hand and feels great, but it would be a little bit easier to play if it was a little slimmer. And I’m not used to a single cut away guitar so it is somewhat awkward playing in the upper fret area, but I figure I’ll get used to it in time. And finally the hardware and electronics. The Grover 18:1 tuning keys are nice and make tuning a breeze. The paperwork I got with the guitar says the nut is a Graphtech black tusq nut so it will be a nice one that I won’t need to replace unless it breaks or something, but it is cut nicely and doesn’t need any work. Frets are nice I haven’t found and dead spots yet, and the fret ends are nice and smooth. Bridge is nice and feels pretty sturdy. The pots feel like there is a little to much resistance in them when I turn them so maybe I’ll replace them if they don’t loosen up a little after being used more. The selector switch works fine no problems there, same with the 1/4″ jack. I was really surprised with the pickups. I wasn’t expecting anything to amazing, but they certainly sound really good, and won’t need replacing anytime soon.I’m really glad I bought this guitar. I’m thinking I might mod the guitar for some coil splitting, and put in some orange drop capacitors. Obviously I’ll do pickups but the stock ones are good and won’t need any changing for the time being.
