Analogman AR20DL Analog Delay Free Shipping

Here’s a rare Analogman AR20DL analog delay pedal. You don’t really see these pedals floating around too much and for good reason. This is the warmest delay pedal I have ever heard, it would make Neil Young proud. From the Analogman site:

The old Ibanez AD80 and some early DM2 pedals used the 3005 chip which works best at high voltage (the old AD80 used two 9V batteries to get 18Volts, which was internally regulated to 12V). The Maxon AD900 was another awesome sounding analog delay which ran at 12V with 3005 or 3008 chips. But most people prefer 9V power supplies and battery power for ease of use, so we made this delay with the 3205 chip which runs on 8V to 9V just fine, like the later DM-2 and DM-3 and original AD-9 pedals.

All delay pedals have two signal paths which are combined at the output – the “dry” signal (your normal sound) and the delayed or “wet” signal (the echoes or repeats). Our idea is to get a powerful tone, from a combination of the higher voltage (9V raw voltage) feeding the audio signal dry circuit, with good delay tone gotten from the wet BBD circuit driven by our internally regulated 8V supply.

So we think the AR20DL has a similar tone to the DM-2 with a 9V power source, or the AD-900 with a 12V power source. Ours is tuned for a strong, warm, and clear dry normal tone, with the delays tuned for a little more upper mids and highs to get through, for a little more clarity than most of the old delays. The decays are tuned for a smooth decay also.

This analog delay is SUPER easy to get self-oscillation/inifinite repeats going. Even at the longest delay time you don’t have to turn the repeat knob up all the way. And it’s not touchy like most delays, where it goes crazy and tries to destroy your amp and ears if you turn it up JUST A BIT too much. It’s almost like a magic helping hand keeps the delays going but not to the point of pain.

An Alkaline battery will probably last about 30 hours in this pedal as it uses only about 14mA of current. The XL version only uses about 1mA more so it’s also good on power. But a good 9V Boss PSA type adaptor is your best bet. Other transformer-based power supplies like pedalpower2, T Rex Fuel Tank, Dunlop Brick, etc are also recommended. DO NOT use an old style carbon battery in this pedal or the tone may be too bright, even when bypassed. These delays are finely calibrated for an alkaline battery or a 9-10V dc regulated power supply.

Here are some video demos to give you some idea about it:

Hi Mike….

Well I just couldn’t stand it and I ordered one of your ARDX20’s last week….I received it yesterday and after playing with it at the studio today here are my thoughts!

First let me qualify this opinion by saying a tube style tape echo is the baddest delay known to man…With that said, understand that I sold mine and purchased the ARDX20! There are a few things that I will miss though.

I’ll miss a 20lb. box to baby and carry around to every session

I’ll miss the constant cleaning of the tape path and pinch roller.

I’ll miss the chatter of the tape cartridge

I’ll miss the tape breaking in the middle of a session

I’ll miss having to make sure I have extra tapes packed up for every gig.

I’ll miss the motor noise and the unexplained quirk of the machine humming bad in some studios, other times not.

I’ll miss having to demag the heads too!

Things I won’t miss

I won’t miss the tone, this has the same smooth liquid feel as the echoplex has.

I won’t the fact that it doesn’t alter the tone of the guitar (off or when you engage the delay!)

I won’t miss the fact that you have to manually set up each tempo on the tape echo but have two presets with the ARDX20 with the ability to expand even on that!

On a serious note the delay sounds wonderful!!!! Its the best sounding Delay unit I’ve ever owned bar none!! My only regret is that I should of ordered two so that i could set two different tempos with two different tweed bassmans!!! 🙂

Thanks Mike for a wonderful pedal!!

This is the old AR20DL and the information below is about this old version.

This Analog Man AR20DL Analog Delay is a BASIC analog delay, think of it as like a Boss DM2 or DM3. It’s a basic pedal but the tone is really good. Like a DM2, it is not true bypass, but we tuned the buffer in it really well. So if you ever turn it off, you will have a nice strong signal going to your amp. I don’t like more than a few buffers in your signal path, but if you have one, this is a good place for it to be (delays are usually at the end of your pedal chain).

History

Revival of the Golden era of Japanese Analog Pedals

My Japanese collaborator Ohbayashi-san had been hoping to produce an original analog delay pedal like the good old Japanese DM-2. One day, he found a Daphon analog delay E20DL at a shop in Japan. He bought it and after analyzing it, he was so surprised that this pedal had the possibility to sound like a vintage DM-2 after some mods.

After finding this, he contacted the Daphon company to tell them he would like to purchase a customized version of their analog delay pedal for RE-J/Japan and AnalogMan/USA. Then Ohbayashi-san actually went to the Daphon factory in China in March 2006 to meet with them.

At the factory, RE-J Ohbayashi-san found some reason why Daphon’s pedal has similar potential with Japanese vintage pedals like DM-2,3, CE-2 and etc. that was sold twenty years ago.

After meeting with them, we specified our original specs for AR20DL: lighter weight boxes, moving center REPEAT knob closer for getting easier LED view, red sparkly DM-2,3 color, and some different chips like the New Old Stock 570 compander chip which is better than the 571 chip that almost everyone else uses.

When we get the pedals from Daphon, we mod them further. We double the delay time with a 3205 chip like the Boss DM2/3. The stock 3208 chip really only works up to 150mS, after about halfway on the delay time knob there is too much noise and whistling. Delay time is about 300mS like most small delays. We also mod the power supply section to work well with a battery or a 9V to 12V power supply. We also add two trimpots (one is the blue thing on the left) for fine tuning the calibration, as the factory does not get calibration very close with fixed resistors. Poor calibration in an analog delay is why a lot of them will make whistling noises. Our delay is calibrated for the highest delay time with absolutely no whistling or odd sounds even at the highest delay time.

We also modify the in and out jacks to make them much more reliable, and beef up the internal wiring also. But it’s best not to open the pedal much, as there are no user adjustments inside. For example you cannot increase the delay time by turning any of the trim pots, you will just lose the echo or increase noise if they are moved from the calibrated positions.

Daphon makes these red pedals to our special AR20DL design, so we can’t do our mod to a stock grey Daphon pedal.

Here is a cool piece of test equipment he came up with for calibrating and testing the delay.

AR20DL-XL extended delay time model

We now have AR20DL-XL pedals available with longer delay time (600mS) if you are interested, for $50 more. To do this, we piggyback an extra delay chip on top of the normal chip and add circuitry to make it work. The sound is about the same, maybe a little louder/stronger.

XL upgrades

In Nov 2007 we started doing XL mods on AR20DL delay pedals. This doubles the delay time and cost is $75 plus S & H. Use our MODFORM which has all the info you need to send your pedal in for the mod.

Price

Price is $145 for the AR20DL for now. The XL option is $50 more at time of pedal order.

Warrantee

One year warrantee to the original owner except for mechanical parts that are physically broken by dropping etc.

Availability

These are no longer available in 2009.

We were using our new website buyanalogman.com to sell these, click on this link to buy one. The website keeps track of the quantities of each standard and XL pedals so you can’t order a pedal when they get sold out.

The first batch of ten sold out within hours in mid March 2007. The second small batch of 12 sold out in one hour on Apr 17. We got 20 more on May 1st. On May 30th we sold 25, half in the morning and half in the early evening for fairness. We got 25 more on June 14th and sold most of them then. We got 24 more on June 21st and shipped some of them. We got more on July 9th and sold them all on the 11th. We got more on July 25th and sold them on the morning of the 26th. We got more on Aug 1st and sold them on that day. We got more on Aug 9th and sold them on that day. We got 30 more in mid Aug and sold them on Aug 26th. We got some more including XL in late Aug and sold them in early Sept. We got some more including XL in mid Sept and sold them the night of the 18th. We got mostly XL models in mid October and sold them the 15th. We got both models in mid November and sold them the 14th. We got both models in late November and sold them the 28-29th. We got both models in late February ’08 and sold them the weekend of the 29th. We got both models in late April ’08 and sold them the week of the 28th. We got XL pedals in mid July and another batch in mid August.

Sorry we will not have any new waiting lists as they are already taking up too much of our time. Instead, we will let you know here when you can buy one when we have them available. If you are a good customer who has bought multiple pedals before 2007 let me know and I will tell you how to order now so you don’t have to keep checking back.

Thanks for your patience and interest!

Analog Man ARDX20 Dual Analog Delay Pedal

Features

Late 2019 – We have a new enclosure without the plexiglass panel, which was easy to scratch and made mods difficult.

The AMAZE1 tap tempo/preset controller is now available and in stock. The ARDX20 is 100% analog, (no computer), so the AMAZE1 is needed for tap tempo and other digitally-controlled features.

In early October 2014 we came out with the new “flat box” version of the ARDX20. The new version uses a custom “hammond style” box for lower profile.

In late 2019 we came out with this enclosure without the plexi panel:

ARDX20 receives the GUITAR PLAYER magazine EDITOR’S PICK AWARD in the April 2010 issue

The ARDX20 takes the great sound of our previous single AR20DL analog delay, but adds more features.

This pedal was released slowly, with no hype or advance promotion, so that we would not get into a back-order situation or have to fix problems in early versions. They are still sort of “under the radar”, but with over 2500 ARDX20 pedals out there now, this pedal is ready to take off!

It was designed by Ohbayashi San of Analog Man Asia in Japan, with design and specification help from Analogmike. We built a custom circuit board and specially designed ergonomic enclosure for this pedal. The wires are hand soldered and assembled to our specs in China. Then the pedals go to Japan where the Analogman logos on the pedals are engraved (round top versions) and the pedals are calibrated and tuned at the Analog Man Asia shop by Ohbayashi san and his team. Here is a picture of the shop in Japan:

This delay was designed for ease of use and the best sound possible, with standard features everyone can use, but optional external features for things everyone may not want to pay for up front. The external options like tap tempo, modulation, and presets is an additional AMAZE0 pedal with a computer in it to control this delay.

It’s trivial to make an analog delay that has very dark repeats, as the noise which is the problem with analog delays is filtered out along with the high end. To make the repeats have good fidelity without excessive noise (like the Deluxe Memory Man) is difficult, especially with the newer low voltage delay chips, but we have tuned this delay for high fidelity repeats and kept the noise very low. If you want less high end there are ways to get that (which also reduce noise). FEATURES 1. True bypass switching, the right side foot switch is effect ON/OFF. 2. It’s ONE delay pedal, but has TWO sets of controls, not only delay time but also delay level and feedback. YELLOW channel (upper 3 knobs) or RED channel (lower 3 knobs) are selected with the left foot switch. 3. Battery or normal 9V boss type power. Power jack in the center top. 4. Battery compartment on the bottom for quick and easy battery changes (round version). 5. Low power consumption, 15mA, so an alkaline battery should last about 30 hours of use. 6. Jacks are on the top of the pedal for efficient layout on pedalboards 7. Input jack on the far right, unplug to disconnect battery 8. Output jack on the far left 9. EFFECTS LOOP is next to the input jack. Use a Y-cable (insert cable like optional HOSA STP-201 ) to run an effect only when the delay is ON, and only on the delayed signal.

The dry sound will stay in the pedal, it won’t pass through the effects loop.

Modulation pedals are cool here. The E-H FREEZE pedal is amazing in the loop! Or use a VOLUME pedal with a Y-Cable, or an expression pedal to control the level of the repeats. Pulling back all the way will kill the delay sound. You can also control the FEEDBACK somewhat, as lowering the repeats volume will reduce the feedback so you can easily control infinite delays. 10. DELAY TIME EXPRESSION jack is next to the output jack. Use a normal 10K Boss EV5 type expression pedal to control the delay time of the RED channel. This jack is also used for external options (AMAZE1) including tap tempo, modulation, multiple delay time preset boxes, etc.

The Boss FV500L is a stronger, bigger expression pedal which we also carry. We also carry the Ernie Ball 6181 volume pedal which makes a GREAT small, heavy duty expression pedal (requires insert Y-cable). 11. 600mS (.6 seconds) analog delay time, with clear, not dull, delay sounds. But not clean and bright like a digital delay. Most of the units actually get 650mS if you measure them. The delays are easily controlled for infinite feedback without runaway volume problems which can damage your speakers. 3:00 on the feedback will usually provide easily controlled infinite repeats. Minimum delay time is 36mS. Uses two select 3205 chips for best delay at 9V. 12. You can plug into the EFFECTS LOOP to get a WET ONLY sound, when the pedal is ON. You will need a special cable- the ring on the delay side always connected to the tip of the output cable. These WET ONLY cables are an option.

a) Attach the tip and the ring together on the pedal side to allow feedback (repeats). If you do this, the normal output will work normally, with both wet and dry, so if you want only DRY out of the normal output, turn the LEVEL knob down to kill the delay on the normal output. The LEVEL knob does not change the volume coming out of the FX loop. So the WET output will be very loud.

b) Ground the tip on the pedal side (kills noise) if you don’t want feedback (multiple repeats). You will have dry only out of the normal output.

You can alternatively plug a normal cable half-way into the EFFECTS LOOP jack to do this but it’s a little tricky to get it just right so if you want to do it often it’s best to use a special cable.

We have these cables for sale

You can alternatively plug a normal cable half-way into the EFFECTS LOOP jack to do this but it’s a little tricky to get it just right so if you want to do it often it’s best to use a special cable. We have these cables for sale HERE 13. Two LED lights blink in time to the delay setting, whether the pedal is ON or OFF, so you can see the delay time setting.

14. New flat version has an internal DARK switch to reduce the high end on the repeats. The dry signal is not changed. The miniature sliding toggle switch is on the back side of the circuit board (you need to pull the board out to see the back), it’s the only switch you will find. This switch will also reduce the normal analog delay white noise, so if you need a quieter sound (like running it into a high gain amp which multiples any pedal noise) you can use it for that.

15. Handmade pedal, with through-hole components, using wires and normal pots/jacks/switches, which allows anyone to fix it with normal parts. Not a disposable pedal like a factory-built pedal using tiny robot-installed SMT componets or proprietary (impossible to replace) parts. No surface mount parts on the circuit board, all through-hole soldered parts that are easily checked and replaced.

16. F lat box version size : 4.6″ wide x 5.5″ deep x 1.72″ tall (2.4″ to top of switch)

NEW REV 3 ARDX20 circuit in Dec, 2011

We redesigned the boards and internal layout of the pedal to make them easier to build and more rugged. We tried to reduce the normal analog delay noise level too by arranging the wires and components, and using a board with more shielding. The wiring, boards, jacks, and LEDs are sturdier inside. We made one change to the circuit, putting a trimpot on the board for adjusting the maximum wet (delay) level. The stock setting is a bit louder than the previous version, and it can get a bit louder yet. But if you adjust it louder, the feedback gets more sensitive and you can have runaway repeats easily. The trimpot for volume of the repeats is marked RT6. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE OTHER TRIMPOTS as special equipment is needed to calibrate an analog delay. The REV3 pedals have a serial number over 1000 and a nicer plexi control panel with A and B labels. These specs carry over to the REV4 flat box versions, with and without plexi.

NEW REV 4 Flat Box ARDX20 in Sept, 2014

This version is about the same except the box is flat for a look that more people like, and a lower profile to fit better on pedalboards. There is also a switch on the back side of the board for a high cut on the repeats. These have a louder delay output but you can turn it down as much as you want with the level knob.

NEW REV 4 ARDX20 with no Plexiglass panel in December, 2019

The same as the previous flat version except there is no plexiglass panel, the graphics are printed directly on the enclosure.

REBOX OLD VERSION

We can re-box your old round-box VERSION 3 ARDX20, into the new flat box. You can tell ver3 as all four jacks have a plastic nut, and the power jack is square. We can’t do the earlier versions, sorry! REV1 had all four jacks with metal nuts, and rev2 had two black and two metal jacks. Our MOD FORM has that info (google will find it).

MODS – not normally available

There are some mods we can do on these if needed. We can add a HIGH CUT toggle (available on the new versions). We can change the delay time expression jack to work on both sides. We can also change the FX LOOP jack into a second Delay Time Expression jack, for the yellow side. This would allow running an expression pedal or AMAZE0 on the yellow side in addition to the red side. Email for more info on mods on an existing or new ARDX20. We can also add a REMOTE jack for switching between sides, with the original AB switch still able to be used locally, for $85. Here is a video of that on

The remote jack is an option on a new pedal. When you change delay time on an Analog delay, the repeated notes can slur a bit, a sort of portamento. This happens whenever changing time on any analog delay – turning the delay time knob; using the delay time expression pedal (see Gary Clark, Jr’s cool use of portamento below!); changing channels on the ARDX20; or using the AMAZE1 to change with tap tempo or program changes. An Analog Delay is like a tape echo or record player, you probably have tried slowing down or speeding up one of these and heard the slur as it changed time. If you don’t like it, you can change delay time between playing but it can be used for cool effects too. No surface mount components Unlike most of the new sunface-size analog delays now available, and most larger units with long delay times, the ARDX20 uses vintage style normal-size electronic components that are hand-soldered to the circuit board. These are not machine made at a factory like others. We also use normal size potentiometers and switches that are hand wired. This means that the ARDX20 won’t wind up in a landfill if something goes wrong- it can be repaired by anyone, while the factory made, robot-built surface-mount analog delays must usually be replaced if something fails or is damaged by an electrical or mechanical accident. We also feel that the normal size components will give you a better sound. The resistors may not make a difference, but the capacitors we use are not available in tiny surface-mount versions.

Someone asked me for a comparison to the MXR Carbon Copy. Those are about the best small analog delays, and we sell a lot of them. The ARDX20 has quite a bit longer delay time, about 2:00 on ours gives you the 600mS that the MXR has. The MXR has more white noise in the background, and the repeats on the MXR are a little harder and harsher due to the extra high end, our repeats are a little softer and smoother, a bit more like the old Japanese analog delays. But the ARDX20 has more high end than the old Japanese analog delays. We also compared with the Boss DM-2W Waza, which has two settings, for low or high (Custom) delay time.

In normal mode, DM2W sounds a lot like our ARDX20 in tone and noise, but delay time is short (300mS).

In Custom (long delay) mode, it goes up to over 800mS and has a very clear sound, not as dark, but has quite a bit more noise, about like an EHX DMM.

Why does an analog delay sound so natural?

One big difference between the sound of digital and analog, is the high frequency decay. A digital delay can have essentially infinite decay, at all audio frequencies. In nature, air absorbs high frequencies really quickly. It turns out that even the largest acoustic space, with a decay of tens of seconds at low/mid frequencies, will be limited to around 1.25-1.5 seconds of decay at 10 kHz or so. Having high frequencies that ring out for seconds ends up sounding unnaturally bright.

TAP TEMPO INFORMATION

The AMAZE1 Tap Tempo box is an external computerized controller box. It plugs right into the delay time jack with a stereo patch cord. No other box or switch will work with the ARDX20 for tap tempo. We have some cool features like modulation and presets in this external box which became available in 2011. The AMAZE0/1 controller will work on ANY ARDX20 pedal. Not sure if it will work on any other analog or digital delays yet but we may come out with new versions if there is a need. The AMAZE0 was discontinued in late 2015 and now we have the smaller AMAZE1.

BASS GUITAR

An analog delay works great on bass, as it has a warm low end and you don’t need a lot of highs. Eric Johnson’s bass player Chris Maresh has the ARDX20 on his pedalboard along with one of our chorus pedals. When Eric went on tour with his old bass player Kyle Brock, Kyle got one too!

David wrote:

I tried out my Analogman Dual Delay on my bass board a few months ago and it has become a permanent fixture! The utter transparency translates perfectly to bass, and in fact, it is the ONLY “usable” delay I’ve ever found for bass. In addition to long special FX type applications, I most commonly use it for a long slap-back type effect, which perfectly replicates the sustain of synth bass without requiring the squashing effect of compression…

I finally saw him in the summer of 2012 and he was also using a KOT V4 and Astro Tone fuzz. He was also using a Boss EV-5 pedal as a delay time expression pedal. Gary did some tasty slow playing while gently rocking the controller pedal for a sweet bent delay sound. Here is a picture of his pedalboard in June 2012. Here are some videos of Gary using the delay with the expression control pedal in the intros. Chuck Garvey of the band moe. has been using his ARDX20 with the AMAZE0 controller since they first came out, for hundreds of shows. He also likes to use an expression pedal on his. Singer/songwriter Christopher Cross, also an outstanding guitarist, got a few ARDX20 pedals for his various boards in 2013. He said “I’m always searching for that elusive tone. Using your delay mono and the TC for my stereo spread is incredible compared to using the DL-4 for both. I have always used the Line 6 but I was losing my fundamental note. Now with your delay and the TC as the last thing in the chain it’s beautiful. Nice and thick but much more articulate.”

Analogman AR20DL-XL Analog Echo/Delay in Zürich kaufen

Bilder). Technisch funktioniert es einwandfrei.
