Geonworks F1-88 Review — Keebs n’ Stuff
TL;DR:

Within the keyboard hobby there have been a number of makers that have been able to garner a reputation for consistent excellence which in turn has driven demand for their keyboards to hype levels. Today’s review concerns one such maker. Geon Works has been able to produce quality keyboards and unique and novel designs on a consistent basis as well as taking on very rare levels of transparency within the hobby. With regular releases of the budget friendly Frog TKL, publishing costs of manufacturing and the profit margin that he makes with each board and taking innovative design approaches to the boards that he puts out, Geon has endeared himself to the community as being one of the foremost names in the hobby. Today’s review concerns the F1-8X, a deceptively simple TKL that offers to users a classic TKL silhouette in a well finished and built design with some oddities that are sure to delineate itself from the rather crowded TKL market.
My F1 was purchased with the help of ThicThacThok, the premier singer/keyboard streamer/cable maker/Jjangmyeon competitive eater in the OCE. Originally a raw aluminium board, the F1 has been custom anodized by Korean anodizer, Prime.
So has Geon garnered his reputation for good reason? Or is the F1 just another TKL in an already fairly saturated market?
The Factual Stuff
The F1-88 is a F13 (extra key in the function row), WKL (Windows keys blockers) TKL (ten keyless layout) made out of aluminium with room inside for 6 internal weights.
The mounting style of the F1 is dependent upon the plate choice of which there are several. Users can choose from the standard aluminium plate with leaf-spring cut outs, the same plate without the leaf-springs, a brass plate, an FR4 plate and a polycarbonate plate.
The standard mounting style is an o-ring mount. However, contrary to what this usually means, ie a long o-ring wrapping around the entirety of the PCB/Plate assembly and then holding it within the case via friction ala the Bakeneko or the Unikorn, the o-ring is cut into sections and inserted into cavities in the top and bottom cases to isolate the PCB/plate assembly from the case.
Alternatively, a thicker plate option will be mounted via sandwich mount, in that the plate will be simply held between the top and bottom case.
The board is compatible with h88c PCBs and in this case was built using a Jels88, an Australian maker of PCBs.
The Opinion Stuff
Build Quality
Built with unlubed Prevail Epsilons, Durock V2 stabilisers lubed with 206G0 and XHT-BDZ, 1.5mm leaf spring aluminium plate with Viton o-rings, GMK Dracula and Rama Works WAVE cap
The F1 gave me no cause for concern in the build process. Inspecting each individual piece yielded no apparent inconsistencies in terms of the machining and the finish of the aluminium with both the bottom and top pieces having quality finishes in terms of their machining.
I will not speak to anodization at length given that the ano on this board was not from the factory but rather conducted after the fact but Prime appears to have done a great job with the finish being very consistent and having no defects in terms of hook marks, streaking or the like.
The top and bottom cases are deceptively simple, taking on a fairly uncomplicated shape, only at closer inspection are you able to find smaller details that would have required a great amount of care during the machining process with both have cavities expertly machined to provide the perfect amount of space for the aforementioned o-rings. All of this has been done to very fine detail as there were no issues in having the o-rings fall out or fail to get in there in the first place, in this respect, you can see the very tight tolerances and attention to detail whilst building the board. Building the F1 with the Viton o-ring the 3mm o-ring were inserted into the provided cavities with little to no issues with the various accompaniments in the plate also moulding to the o-rings as required and isolating the plate from the rest of the board very well.
The plate is a rather complicated one, with a wealth of flex cuts and the leaf-spring system potentially leading to some complications if not well designed and well machined. I have had some issues trying to get some of my own plates cut for other leaf-spring boards and a failure to get tolerances correct on certain materials will also inevitably lead to some complications. The F1’s plate did not suffer from any such maladies with the aluminium plate feeling extremely sturdy, well designed and well machined, there were no inherent issues with structural integrity or any other issues related to the rather complicated shape.
The F1 adopts rather unique case feet in that they are rubber feet inserted into the very recessed screw holes for the case screws. The implementation was done to good effect with the rubber feet remaining in board despite any attempt to drag my board around my deskmat to get them off. Speaking of recessed screws, these things are in there deep so something I would recommend is to have a rather long hex screwdriver of some sort as my multibit screwdriver did not have the length to get in to the top case screws.
