Mark III systems

Mark III technology is a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure. This technology and its evolutions equip more than 200 vessels in operation and under construction and benefit from more than 50 years’ experience at sea.

The concept

The Mark III membrane system is a containment and insulation system, directly supported by the ship’s hull structure. It is composed of a primary corrugated stainless steel membrane, positioned on top of prefabricated insulation panels, including a complete secondary membrane made of composite material.

This modular system employs standard prefabricated components that can accommodate any shapes and capacities of tanks. They are designed for mass production techniques and easy assembly.

Mark III evolution

GTT technologies are continually optimised to meet the requirements of ship-owners and shipyards, while also complying with regulatory changes affecting the sector.

Since 2008, GTT has introduced Mark III design evolutions to improve the thermal and structural efficiency of the technology.

Its latest development, Mark III Flex+, offers a guaranteed boil-off rate of 0.07% V/day, thanks to an insulation thickness increased of 480 mm.

GTT’s LNG containment system to be used for ammonia

February 16, 2021, by Sanja Pekic

French LNG containment specialist GTT received approval in principle from Bureau Veritas clearing the use of existing Mark III LNG systems to also be used to contain ammonia without any major design changes.

GTT obtained two approvals in principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas, a company specialized in testing, inspection, and certification.

The first one is related to the ‘NH3 Ready’ classification of Mark III membrane tanks. It recognizes that the Mark III system is suitable for the subsequent containment of ammonia in LNG as fuel applications, without any major design changes.

The primary barrier of Mark III technology was tested for compatibility with ammonia and a test campaign was performed to determine the level of reinforcement of the containment system for ammonia. Ammonia has a higher density than LNG. LNG is shipped at minus 162°C while ammonia is moved at minus 34°C.

The second AiP relates to the higher design pressure of ‘1 barg’ in LNG as fuel applications, such as large container vessels.

These approvals prove GTT’s ability to offer ship-owners flexible solutions.

Chairman and CEO of GTT Philippe Berterottière said: “Being “NH3 Ready”, and the alternative “1 barg” design, once again underline the importance of our ability to continuously innovate, in order to provide our customers with even more reliable, performant, safe and flexible technologies. GTT targets bringing increased flexibility to ship-owners required to adapt as well and as quickly as possible to an ever-changing fuel world. While we are convinced that LNG is the solution of choice for cleaning-up ship emissions even further, we have to take into consideration that ammonia, coming from green hydrogen, could bring additional reductions in emissions. In offering ammonia compatibility, we open the perspective to owners of a much longer period for ship amortization.”

President of Bureau Veritas marine & offshore Matthieu de Tugny added: “Our role is to help the industry understand – and address – both risk and opportunity as we look for energy transition solutions. It is a pleasure to be awarding this first approval for an ammonia membrane containment tank system, based on the tried and trusted Mark III technology, to GTT.”

GTT’s Mark III Flex containment system wins Bureau Veritas approval for application on ice-breaking ‘Arctic’ LNG carriers

Approval in principle has been granted for the system that may be used in Ice Breaking LNG carriers to be ordered for future projects in the Arctic.

Approval was based on vibration/acceleration calculations performed to simulate the behaviour of the system when an LNG carrier is involved in icebreaking operations.

Paris-La Défense, France, September 19, 2019: GTT – the LNG containment system designer has received approval in principle (AiP) for its Mark III Flex system today at Gastech 2019 in Houston.

This membrane cargo containment system (CCS) is an evolution of the GTT Mark III Flex technology specifically designed and modified for Arctic operations. A certificate was provided to Philippe Berterottière, GTT’s Chairman and CEO by Matthieu de Tugny, the President of Bureau Veritas, Marine & Offshore at a ceremony on the Bureau Veritas exhibition stand at Gastech.

Speaking in Houston, Matthieu de Tugny commented: ‘It is always a pleasure to hand over such a certificate and with GTT it is a regular occurrence as their systems continue to evolve and develop to meet the performance requirements of today’s market. We are proud to continue helping the development of their containment systems and of arctic related technologies and their application.’

Philippe Berterottière, commenting said: ‘We are very happy to be granted this approval by Bureau Veritas. We are proud to be able to adapt our technologies to meet the arctic maritime challenges. ’

Mark III technology is a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure. With the benefit now of more than 55 years of GTT systems in service experience, the insulation solution provided by the Mark III Flex Cargo Containment System reduces the daily guaranteed Boil-Off gas rate to 0.085% of tank volume. The Flex system is well proven with 66 LNG carriers and 1 FSRU already in service with the Mark III Flex since its introduction in 2011.

The evolved system was tested extensively in a Krilov technology facility in Russia to demonstrate the suitability of Mark III Flex for use in navigation in ice infested waters. This follows similar testing for GTT’s NO96 used for the first 15 Yamal LNG carriers – all classed by Bureau Veritas.

BV approved the system for the Arctic application following the results of the vibration and acceleration tests performed by the Russian institute on the request of GTT. The vibration/acceleration calculations are made to simulate the behavior of the system when the ship is involved in ice breaking operations.

ClassNK issues Approval in Principal for GTT’s upgraded Mark III system

Classification Society ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) to GTT’s technical solution fitted with Mark III membrane tank. The design developed by GTT is an upgrade of the Mark III system with a design pressure up to 2 bar gauge (barg) for LNG fuel applications.

The company describes that the 2 barg upgrade is particularly useful for PCTCs and cruise ships, and offers improved pressure holding capabilities and operational flexibility in particular during bunkering operations.

ClassNK carried out the verification according to its Rule Part GF incorporating IGF Code, especially on maximum tank dimensions, tank structural reinforcements, tank operating pressure during in service operations as well as aspects related to potential emergency situations. Upon satisfactory completion of the review, ClassNK has issued the AiP accordingly.

Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, said: “We are pleased to be granted with this approval by ClassNK with whom GTT has had a close partnership for years. This AiP demonstrates that our solutions are constantly evolving, in order to meet the industry requirements. Today, GTT membrane solutions are applicable to more and more LNG-fuelled vessel types, such as LNG-fuelled PCTCs and cruise ships.”

Hayato Suga, Executive Vice President, Director of Plan Approval and Technical Solution Division of ClassNK, said: “In view of the increasing role of LNG as fuel to shipping decarbonization, the industry expects more options to implement the technology onboard. ClassNK is glad to have completed the safety evaluation on GTT’s new design, which has been developed responding to the industry needs. I hope that the AiP will encourage the uptake of evolving technology.”

GTT Announces An Evolution Of The Mark III Flex Technology

280 Shares Share Pin WhatsApp

With the growth in the use of increasingly efficient propulsion systems, the LNG shipping industry is continuously looking to reduce the level of daily evaporation of the LNG cargo (Boil-Off Rate) in modern vessels.

In order to meet this requirement, GTT, in turn, is continuously up-grading its technologies. A new evolution of its Mark III Flex technology has been developed and has recently received the General Approval from the classification society ABS.

This latest variant of the sea-proven Mark III Flex technology benefits from an improved insulation performance through an increase in thickness and an enhanced secondary membrane solution already in service on ethane carriers. It allows for a daily Boil-Off Rate of 0.07%V (compared to the 0.085%V per day of the previous version), equivalent to that of Mark V.

Philippe Berterottière, CEO of GTT states: “We are proud to extend our range of membrane containment systems thanks to this high-performance, reliable solution. Taking into account the current economic environment and the level of LNG prices, this solution allows us to meet customer expectations. It represents a complementary solution to the Mark V, a system which demonstrates a real technological advance and the future of membrane containment systems. “

Gaztransport & Technigaz

Gaztransport & Technigaz SA is a French multinational naval engineering company with headquarters in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, France.

Trading as the GTT Group, the company is an engineering organization specializing in membrane containment systems dedicated to the transport and storage of liquefied gas worldwide. GTT has developed and patented multiple solutions for the liquefied gas industry, in particular for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).[3] The company is the sole supplier of maritime containment tanks for LNG.[4]

The current company was established through a merger between rival companies Gaztransport SA and Technigaz SA in 1994.[5]

On the 27 February 2014 the GTT Group was listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange.[6]

History [ edit ]

In the 1950s, European companies were looking for solutions to transport Algerian gas from the Sahara to Europe. The idea of a North African pipeline was scrapped due to regional instability at the time and this led to the first boom in the shipping of gas by sea in the form of a cryogenic liquid in LNG carriers.

After the Evian Accords in 1962, France purchased its first LNG carrier – the Jules Verne – for operation on the route between Oran and France. Great Britain already had two of these vessels at this time.[5]

Both Gaztransport and Technigaz emerged as a result of the innovations taking place in this historical context. In 1963 Gazocean, a company jointly owned by Gaz de France and NYK Line, created a subsidiary called Technigaz responsible for developing new LNG transportation technology.[5] In 1964 Technigaz filed for a patent for “wallpanels for so-called membrane tanks” which was granted in 1968[7] and which led to the development of the Mark I containment system. Between 1968 and 1979, twelve LNG carriers were built using Technigaz Mark technology.[5] In 1983 Technigaz was sold to the Amrep Group[5] which subsequently went bankrupt in 1984 and was itself taken over by the Bouygues Group.[8] In 1994 Technigaz was merged with Gaztransport to create Gaztransport & Technigaz.[9]

Gaztransport was founded on the 10 January 1966.[1] In 1967 Phillips Petroleum and Marathon Oil, which held contracts to import gas into Japan, placed an order for two LNG carriers, Polar Alaska and Arctic Tokyo, that were built in the Swedish shipyard of Kockums. These ships remained in operation for 45 years.[5] In 1969 the Polar Alaska was launched, and between 1969 and 1978, ten LNG carriers used the NO systems developed by Gaztransport.[5] In 1994 Gaztransport was merged with Technigaz and Technigaz Shipping to create Gaztransport & Technigaz.[9]

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the company continued to provide services to Russian clients, even as many major companies were pulling out of Russia.[4]

Liquid Natural Gas Membrane Tank

In order to store and transport Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) an envelope or membrane system is required to separate the liquid gas at -163 °C from the ship’s hull and to reduce evaporation.

GTT inherited the Mark and NO technologies from its founding companies and has since developed these technologies to their current forms.[11]

The Mark III systems use a membrane based cryogenic liner composed of a primary metallic membrane positioned on top of a prefabricated insulation panel including a complete secondary membrane. The membranes are directly supported by the ship’s inner hull.

The NO96 systems are also composed of a membrane system that is a cryogenic liner directly supported by the ship’s inner hull. This liner includes two identical metallic membranes and two independent insulation layers.

The NO96 Max systems offer a compromise between low boil-off and system strength, for better thermomechanical efficiency.

In addition, GTT has developed a new technology specifically for the transportation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) called GTT MARS.[12]

In June 2020 the National Institute of Industrial Property ranked GTT first in its leading companies list with 58 patents filed.[13]

Singapore hub [ edit ]

In April 2019 GTT announced that it would be creating a “digital hub of excellence” in Singapore.[14]
