HOBYM Observatory Crux 170HD Harmonic Drive Mount

Crux mounts feature Harmonic Drive Tecnology. This tecnology gives Crux mounts the following advantages over traditional drive systems for astronomy applications;

– The mounts have zero backlash and therefore pointing and guiding can be very accurate

– They have very high torque. This makes it ideal your use with all loads. For instance the length of a refractor normally requires a much more powerful mount than a typical weight capacity suggests. The load limits for Crux mounts are for all types of telescopes and also for imaging

– The motor is very compact and therefore allows a small form factor, resulting in less bulk and weight.

– Harmonic Drive motors are very responsive and therefore react instantly to guiding commands. When combined with the zero backlash this allows for extremley accurate tracking. There is none of the high frequency oscillation normally associated with traditional drive systems.

– The high torque of the motor permits use without a counterweight, further reducing the overall weight. If a counterweight is added, the load capacity can be increased significantly. Note that this counterweight is not used to balance the telescope in the normal way. It is simply helping the drive system and making the load safer.

Please see the short video below for an explanation of how the Harmonic Drive system works. Motors for Crux Mounts are supplied by Harmonic Drive Systems Inc of Japan, a sister company to Harmonic Drive Systems AG.

The Crux 170HD is probably the ultimate in medium capacity mounts. It weighs only 4.7kg. It is a fully GoTo enabled system which includes a 12000+ object database. Without any counterweight the mount has a load capacity of 8kg. By adding a 2.7kg counterweight, the maximum capacity is increased to 18kg. This capacity is rated for imaging

The ‘170HD’, as with all Crux mounts is provided with a mounting point for a QHY Polemaster. No adapter is needed. This makes polar alignment using the built in Altitude and Azimuth controls very simple.

Supplied with all Crux Mounts is the Titan TCS Controller. This provides GoTo functionality and all other mount control and connectivity. It is based on the LX200 protocol and is therefore fully ASCOM and INDI compliant. It also features wireless connectivity in the form of Bluetooth, with WiFi being added shortly. Thus is allows easy integration with Tablet applications such as Sky Safari.

One significant function of the Crux mount and TCS Controller is PEC training. This is where, using a guide system (like PHD2), the drive system is trained. This, once completed permanently (unless reset by the user) lowers the PE of the mount to typically +/- 2-5 arc seconds dependent on the mount. This enhanced error can then be combined with guiding leading to extremely low PE. Potentially as low as 0.1 arc sec. As part of our service, we PEC train each mount before delivery so you receive a mount that is capable of operating at its best, straight out of the box. A copy of the PE test data is also provided.

HOBYM CRUX 170HD Mount. How true?

Posted 02 March 2020 – 09:04 PM

A friend of mine bought a 170 and sent it back after realising it was not what he expected. I had a play with it and I would say they’re a “work in progress” – in their current state disappointing for the price, compared to other alternatives – but if they fixed the shortcomings yes it could be a very nice product. To be perfectly frank we found it un-usable as a portable rig for visual – which is a great shame considering it’s compact size suggests that’s exactly what it should be ideal for.

Happy to hear if others get it to work.

The primary shortcoming is the handset – it is literally just a motor-driver – and does not provide the functionality of a SynScan handset or the Celestron/Meade handsets. There is no 2-star alignment capability and no compensation for polar alignment errors – and – while it claims to have a catalog of objects, GoTo simply does not work in either EQ or Altaz mode even if you have roughly aligned it manually with a compass and clinometer. Not just off by a bit – it was off by whole quadrants in ways that leave me suspecting the maths calculations in the firmware are wrong.

This implies you must use a computer to operate these mounts – starting with the alignment procedure and to operate GoTo.

There are two mechanical issues not immediately obvious, as well.

If you use these mounts on a tripod without a counterweight – the mechanical imbalance results in large forces to the tripod head. All tripods flex to some extent and this detracts from the pointing accuracy overall for your scope.

Secondly these mounts have no mechanical clutches, and can deliver enormous torque – if the scope, eyepiece or camera strikes an obstacle (tripod or the mount itself) the motors will not stall – and most likely rip the telescope off or break the tripod, with catastrophic results. Hence I’d be very very wary of putting a valuable scope on one of these until you are absolutely confident it won’t slew the scope into the tripod – or the ground.

There is an electrical issue, too. The handset is enclosed in a metal box which is connected to the incoming supply. With a metal tripod under the mount, if the case touched the mount or tripod a pair bit of arcing and sparking was observed, to the extent I’d suggest the handset should be covered in plastic tape. Whether I’d be happy to connect a valuable laptop to it is also questionable.

Overall I was left with the impression this would suit wide-field imaging with laptop to drive it with a DSLR and camera lenses on top, but it’s not suitable for visual observing with say an SCT where GoTo must be consistently achieved to better than 0.5 degrees and ideally 0.1 degree. This isn’t just a function of the resolution of the motors – it also includes the effects of flexure at all points from the ground up.

It also suggests the people who designed this and wrote the software are not visual telescope users.

The CRUX 170HD is a technological marvel – it’s incredibly light, weighing only 4.9 kg (10.8 lbs) without counterweights and yet is able to carry payloads almost 5 times its weight with optional counterweights with extremely accurate tracking. It is the traveling astrophotographer’s dream mount!

No counterweights are required for payloads of up to 10 kg (22 lbs), with a maximum payload capacity of 24 kg (52.9 lbs) with the optional counterweight and counterweight shaft. This gives the CRUX 170HD the best weight to capacity ratio of any mount in its class

The harmonic drive is the key to the performance of this special mount – the harmonic drive gears exert 10 times the normal friction and cover 10 times the gear surface contact area, allowing for much larger loads than traditional mounts. This ensures lower costs and much greater freedom in transporting the mount to remote locations – You can easily travel with it in your checked-in air travel luggage or even take it as carry-on. The harmonic gears are rated to last more than 100 years with near-continuous use, and are unaffected by temperature changes.

The 170HD offers excellent tracking performance due to its zero-backlash design. It utilizes the P-motion PEC system to control cycle errors in the gears. This can minimizes the tracking error to less that ±2 arc seconds. This enables feats like taking a 20 minute exposure using a medium sized refractor without using any guiding system.

The CRUX 170HD comes equipped with a very advanced telescope control system – the TiTaN TCS (Telescope Control System). It’s very easy to use and flexible system, working with or without a computer. The TiTaN TCS controller supports advanced wireless environments as well as a connection via serial or USB. The mount uses Takahashi Style 35mm Spacing for the telescope connection. Inexpensive Losmandy-Takahashi adapters will covert it to use a Losmandy saddle. All Crux mounts come with a hard-shell carrying case. The included counterweight bar utilizes standard 25mm (.98″) counterweights.

Telescopes Canada is proud to be the exclusive Canadian distributor of Hobym Harmonic Drive mounts.
