In my Motile M141/M142 intro video I mentioned how upgradeable this laptop is, and now I’ll show you just how easy it is! In this video I’ll show you how to upgrade the RAM/memory, add an additional NVMe SSD, and upgrade the wireless card.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a second RAM slot to run a dual-channel configuration. I’ve checked both sides of the mobo myself and the existing socket doesn’t have provisions (no locking tabs or slot) to put a second stick in the opposite direction covering the M.2 SATA side despite what others have thought. Here’s a pic of the opposite side of the RAM socket: https://i.imgur.com/C1QITgY.jpg
Also, you can absolutely put a different amount of RAM (like if you only want to bump up to 8GB), and a larger NVMe SSD (like 1TB) than I did.
For those wondering about the WiFi card performance differences, when transferring GBs of videos between this laptop and one of my wired network computers the stock Intel 3168ngw only gives me about 25MB/s, while the AX200 does 70MB/s on my home AC network.

Motile M142/M141 BIOS Upgrade Guide

This guide is meant to upgrade Walmart’s Motile M142/M141. I’ll recommend doing it manually. Do Not use Windows to update the BIOS. My laptop got bricked and that’s why I’m here writing this.

Download Intel’s open source shell from the TianoCore UDK/EDK2 project. You’re gonna need a USB stick that you’re willing to wipe. Here’s how to create a bootable USB stick with the EFI shell:

From https://github.com/chipsec/chipsec/wiki/Creating-a-Bootable-USB-drive-with-UEFI-Shell : Format your media as FAT32 Create the following directory structure in the root of the new media: /efi/boot Download the UEFI Shell (Shell.efi) from the following link: https://github.com/tianocore/edk2…/Shell.efi Rename the UEFI shell file to Bootx64.efi Copy the UEFI shell (now Bootx64.efi) to the /efi/boot directory

I then copied the PFxPUxx_1.08.00 directory to the USB stick and rebooted.

The Motile defaults to booting first from removable media (USB stick has highest priority), which is insecure, but works out fine for testing purposes. If you need to inspect or change your boot priorities, press DEL while booting to enter BIOS.

Once you’ve booted into the EFI shell (which is really just another EFI program), you’re greeted with your drive mappings, and a command prompt. My bootable USB stick came up as FS0, so I did the following (exercise extreme caution, plug in the power, etc, to avoid bricking):

Shell> FS0:

FS0:\> cd PFxPUxx_1.08.00

FS0:\> f.nsh

The f.nsh script invokes ifux64.efi with the correct parameters to flash the EC and then reboot.

If you’d like to play around some more with the EFI shell, note that it comes with some useful commands, and some usual terminal conventions (such as tab completion and history) apply. You could list the commands by typing help -b. You could flash the BIOS this way too, I suppose.

Be careful, and good luck!

[BIOS] Flashing modded bios issue – Motile 14 – M141[BIOS]

@Dorin1996 – Thanks – Do you need only setting changed, or do you want unlocked menu?

@drmusama – Ahh, thanks, I totally missed that “Memory Clock” setting, while I was looking around for timings etc. So, it seems you can at least set speed there, this and what I mentioned is your only real memory related settings in this BIOS.

Yes, those are the only possible memory speed options (1333-2400). You wont be able to enter anything, only select from those speeds. You should be able to do that now, since you have chipset visible, can you not see it?

Yes, if your board has XMP enabled then it would choose an XMP profile, if there was one at 2400 speed range (not likely, since this is 3200 memory), you can check all XMP profiles with HWINFO64 or possibly you can see them all in CPU-z SPD tab (it only shows 4, if there is 8+ profiles then you may not see XMP ones)

Thanks, looks like it’s running as fast as it can on this board, 2400 CAS 14 – It may be able to do better timing at that speed, but you can’t know for sure without testing that on some other board and then confirming stability.

And if you wanted to edit the timings you’d have to pay $25 for paid copy of Taiphoon Burner, and that may only work for you if #1 your memory is not write-protected, and #2 you find DDR4 board that we can edit BIOS on to unlock SPD Write Protection (may or may not be locked on this board, but it’s not in BIOS so we can’t adjust if it is locked)

I asked about RGB backlight because in the BIOS there is 3 (2 really) light effect options, in other BIOS this is for RGB keyboard and one controls sleep mode LED or pre-OS and other is while in OS lighting effects.

I was going to make visible for you, but unsure if white LED keyboard would work with those, but we can see what happens – I’ll make visible for you anyway

Junior Member #1 Hi guys,

Can anyone help me to unlock this bios? I would like to be able to control the RAM frequency and timings – this is my most biggest priority.

RAM is currently running on 2400 MHz CL12 timings – and the APU onboard is Ryzen 3 3200U – which would really benefit from OC’ing memory up to 3200 MHz (I’m sure it can go as high as this).

Can anyone help me unlock this bios? I’m attaching motherboard details from CPU-z down below

Thanks guys!

P.S. I’m really new here, so if I missed any important information to provide you with guys – please do let me know.

some new progress I managed to make:

– I managed to make a backup of my latest bios rom file and modify it successfully (I have verified that the modded bios is the same size as the original backup – it is indeed)

– I managed to mod the bios – to unhide the hidden menus in the AMI bios in my laptop that I have through the AMIBCP tool like following:

1

Now after this I made a bootable freedos usb and copied the following files to the root directory of newly created FREEDOS bootable usb:

– mod.rom => file that I modified through AMIBCP

– flashrom.exe file => to flash the modded bios

– CWSDPMI.exe file

read/erase-write/verify was successfully done ….

However – now when I try to enter the BIOS – I still see the same old bios even though I changed the access/use permissions from “DEFAULT” to “USER” -_- – the chipset and many tabs inside “Advanced” are still hidden…

What am I doing wrong here? Can someone help me out please? I know I’m close to the solution but I just cannot grasp my mind around it – what the [censored] am I doing wrong? xD

I’m also attaching here the modded bios rom file so you guys can inspect it please. Tried.. Still the same… This is the message windows I get after flashing:

https://i.ibb.co/RBnCKZW/IMG-20200612-073030.jpg

And the bios seems to remain untouched and same… However I tested whether it really flashes the bios – and it really does. How do I know?

Before I flashed this version of modded bios that you sent me – I set up a password when entering bios and booting into system – it prompted me to enter PW

But after flashing MOD_1.rom – no password to be requested when entering bios – which means it really did flash it – just menu’s like chipset aren’t showing up for some reason ..

[censored] what is wrong with this? :/

Is there any way to edit the default user that is accessing the bios for ex. when I press the DEL button? Like instead of entering by default as USER – I would enter as full administrator or SUPERVISOR – or however it’s called? Would that be possible? Tried.. Is there any other way than spi programmer ? :

Some other tool possibly ? I tried using AFUWINx64 tool through gui and console but I was getting an error message:

error secure flash rom verify fail 18

But hey – why do I get all same settings when I flash the bios – and then make a backup of it with AFUWINx64 – newly made backup is same as modded bios (Same settings) – doesn’t that means that bios was flashed successfully ? Okay I just checked and I can confirm I only see these two options in advanced tab:

– OS Support

– Wake on LAN

(These were options that are available with default bios)

And few more options – I’ve attached a screenshot with red underlined marker of what I’m able to see… But yes – USB I/O is hidden – as the rest of the options

P.S. This is the BIOS mod that you provided me with in the link above. just installed mint 20 on a motile m141 laptop earlier today. everything works great except suspend. i had issue with sleep working on this when it had windows 10, but hibernate worked. how can i get suspend to work? suspend works, kind of, but monitor doesn’t come back on, which is what it did in windows when using sleep. i can hear the fan running, but nothing on screen.just got a kernel update, but haven’t tried suspend yet to see if that may have solved problem.here’s the output of inxi -Fxz:here’s cat /etc/fstab:here’s cat /etc/default/grubi was trying to follow a topic here, viewtopic.php?f=90&t=332419&hilit=hibernate on what commands were asked and what was done, but don’t if it pertains to this machine or if i could follow. not sure i’m reading what it was that solved the issue for the op of that topic. i don’t think that topic was form me anyway as i was saying hibernate instead of suspend. have edited this post to reflect i’m asking about suspen.any help is really appreciated. don’t really want to have to reinstall windows 10 on here. will need some hand holding if i have to work with command line to resolve this, so please give explicit instructions.thank you

(/efi/boot/Bootx64.efi)

Bootx64.efi 0.91MB

BIOS\PF4PU1F_3200U_BIOS\FlashUtil\AfuEfi64

EC\PFxPN-UxF_1.05.00

shell>

shell> FS0:

FS0:\> cd PFxPUx_1.08.00

FS0:\> f.nsh

2. Notes

The status and notes are for FreeBSD 13.0-CURRENT from the middle of May 2020 booted in EFI mode. Secure boot has to be disabled (obviously).

Integrated video works with amdgpu driver from drm-devel-kmod starting with version 5.0.g20200507. The efifb workaround described in Graphics#AMD_Graphics is not needed. Switching between X and non-X virtual terminals works without any problems. To get the native resolution in a vt terminal I use this in loader.conf:

efi_max_resolution=”1080p”

Both video and sound work without issues for the external HDMI connection. I used pavucontrol to dynamically switch to and from HDMI audio when playing through pulseaudio (e.g., YouTube in Firefox)

Switching to polling mode may be needed to get HDA audio working. Sometimes playback does not work from the beginning, sometimes it stops working after a while.

dev.hdac.1.polling=1

With BIOS version 1.06 automatic switching between built-in speakers and external headset (or speakers) does not work. I am using this configuration tweak:

hint.hdaa.1.nid21.config=”as=1 seq=15″ hint.hdaa.1.nid24.config=”as=4 seq=15″

Volume control special keys do work.

Brightness keys do not change screen brightness. However, it can be controlled using sysctl sys.class.backlight.amdgpu_bl0.bl_device.brightness .

The touchpad works with ig4 driver and out of the tree iichid driver. The driver is available in packages / ports as well. iichid works in polling mode as its interrupt is routed via GPIO and FreeBSD (on x86) does not support that. The touchpad does not work in the console.

The microSD card reader does not work as it requires rtx_usb driver (driver for Realtek USB card readers) that FreeBSD does not have. The hardware is Realtek RTS5129.

Web camera (internally connected via USB), works fine with webcamd. The laptop also features an IR camera. Not sure how to use or test it, though.

802.11a (5 GHz) and 802.11b/g (2.4 GHz) have been successfully tested. 802.11n and 802.11ac are not supported by iwm driver yet. Radio button correctly toggles the wireless function (WiFi and bluetooth), but when the radio is off that’s not reflected in wlan interface status.

Battery status is reported correctly via ACPI.

System temperature is reported via ACPI. Fan speed is not available.

CPU temperature is reported via amdtemp.

Bluetooth is detected (ubt attaches), but has not been tested yet.
