동네에 있는 보건소에 갔더니, 보험도 있는지 물어보고, 결과 나오는 시간이 37시간 이상 걸릴 수도 있다고 하면서 빠른 결과를 원하면 병원에 가서 비용을 지불하고 검사하라고 조언을 해 주었습니다.
그래서 우리는 발빠른게, 병원이랑, 공항이랑, PCR하는 곳을 알아본 결과, 웰그린에서
인테넷으로 예약하고, 무료로 24시간에 결과가 나온다고 해서, 검사 받기로 결정했습니다.

Free COVID-19 testing and anti-viral pills are available, beginning July 1, at Test-to-Treat sites around the city. The mobile testing units, managed by NYC Test & Trace Corps, provide no-cost instant access to antiviral medication (Paxolvid) for eligible New Yorkers who test positive at the sites. Treatment can prevent severe illness and in many cases hospitalization.
The medication is in pill form and prescribed by a healthcare provider. Each site will be equipped with a clinician who can screen and prescribe Paxolvid for anyone who tests positive on a rapid test at the site.

무보험자를 대상으로 한 연방 정부의 무료 코비드19 검사와 치료가 예산 고갈로 중단된 가운데 오미크론 변이바이러스로 인한 뉴욕시의 감염율은 지난 2주 동안 77% 증가해 우려의 목소리가 높습니다. 연방 상원에서는 변이 바이러스 속출로 인한 코비드19 재확산 위험을 이유로 코비드19 검사 및 치료에 대한 긴급 지원금, 100억달러를 배정하는 것에 합의했지만 통과를 앞두고 여전히 교착 상태에 빠져있습니다. 여기에 더해 의회는 앞으로 2주 동안 휴회에 들어가게 돼 이 달 안으로 해당 예산안이 통과될 지는 미지수입니다.
이에 뉴욕시에서는 보험 유무와 상관없이 무료로 코비드19 검사를 받을 수 있는 검사소를 운영한다고 밝혔으며 뉴욕시립 병원 New York City Health and Hospitals에서 운영하는 뉴욕시 5개 보로 내 각 검사소에서 무료 워크인 PCR 검사 및 항원 검사를 받을 수 있습니다. 또한 시 보건국( New York City Department of Health )에서 운영하는 총 8개 검사소에서 긴급 PCR 검사를 제공하고 있습니다. 단 시 보건국 산하 8개 검사소는 예약제로만 운영되며 검사 결과를 24시간 이내에 받아볼 수 있습니다. 예약은 온라인으로 만 가능합니다.
지병으로 인해 면역력이 약한 시민이나 65세 이상 시니어의 경우 오전 9시에서 오후 7시 사이에 전화 929-298-9400으로 연락하면 시에서 파견한 간호사가 집으로 방문해 무료 코비드19 검사를 시행해 줍니다.
한편 변이바이러스로 감염자 수가 다시 증가 추세에 돌입한 상황에서 연방 정부의 무료 코비드19검사 및 치료가 중단된 데 대해 뉴욕타임스는 뉴욕에 공중 보건 위기가 찾아올 수도 있는 중요한 시기에 연방 의회의 당파 논쟁으로 인해 꼭 필요한 예산 처리가 늦어지고 있다고 지적했습니다. 그러면서 시나 주에서 운영하는 검사소를 방문하기 전에 검사와 관련해 요금이 부여되는 지 미리 확인을 하고 또 검사에 관련된 수수료가 있는 지 여부 등을 보험사를 통해 확인할 것을 조언했습니다.

◆“제발 가족 모임 갖지 마세요”

신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)이 급속히 재확산하면서 미국의 대형 할인점에서 생필품 사재기가 또 등장했다. 25일(현지시간) 뉴저지주 할인점 숍라이트에선 1인당 화장지를 한 개씩만 구입할 수 있도록 했는데도 판매대가 텅 비었다. 뉴욕=조재길 특파원
◆1년 후엔 완전한 회복 가능할까
최근 미열과 함께 오한 근육통 설사 소화불량 등 여러 증세가 한꺼번에 나타났습니다. 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 증상과 일치하는 부분이 있어, 자가 격리와 함께 코로나 테스트를 받아보기로 했습니다.한국처럼 미국에서도 코로나 테스트엔 별도 비용이 들지 않습니다. 건강보험을 갖고 있으면 보험사가 일부 부담하고, 보험이 없다면 연방 및 주정부가 전액 부담합니다.문제는 코로나 의심 환자가 폭발적으로 늘고 있다는 겁니다. 뉴욕 및 뉴저지주에서 코로나 테스트 예약을 하려고 관련 사이트에 접속하니, 24시간 내 가능한 곳이 하나도 없었습니다. 증상이 심각할 경우 종합병원 응급실을 찾을 수밖에 없습니다.이틀 후로 예약한 뒤 먼 거리를 운전해 대형 약국 체인 CVS의 드라이브 스루 테스트 장소를 찾았습니다. 시간대별로 차량 대수를 제한한 덕분에 대기 시간이 길지 않았지만 테스트를 받으려는 차량이 끊임없이 이어졌습니다.검사는 자가 테스트 방식이었습니다. CVS의 두꺼운 유리창 밖으로 건네진 검체 패키지를 받은 뒤 차 안에서 콧속(비강) 이물질을 채취해 시험관에 담았지요. 혼자서 검체를 채취하는 방식이어서 정확도가 떨어질 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 면봉을 콧속 깊숙히 집어넣는 게 생각만큼 쉽지 않습니다.결과를 받기까지 또 시간이 많이 걸렸습니다. 30분 내 결과를 확인할 수 있는 항원진단 키트는 물량 부족 때문에 처음부터 선택할 수 없었습니다. 유전자 증폭 방식의 분자진단(PCR) 검사인데다 검사자가 워낙 많은 탓에, 3일 만에 결과를 받을 수 있었습니다.처음 코로나 의심 증상이 발현한 후 5일이 지난 시점에서야 코로나 여부를 확인할 수 있었다는 겁니다.
