I modified free shavehorse plans by Tom Donahey (linked below) to incorporate reclaimed douglas fir wood from a historical building in Seattle, hand forged hardware, and scraps from my recent Wood Whisperer Guild Build. What started as a project with my friends Kim and Dave as a massive collaboration ended up being a really sweet way to christen my new woodshop. This chair gets me one step further to having made all the tools necessary to build my next windsor chair myself.

Shaving Horse Plans — Tim Manney

Domestic US orders are for 1/2 scale printed plans.

International orders are for digital plans.

The first woodworking I ever did was on a shaving horse. I had just turned 20, and a 12-year-old sat me down at a shaving horse with a drawknife and taught me how to make a spatula from a piece of red maple firewood. I was hooked. The simple elegance and intuitive feel of the shaving horse and drawknife completely drew me in as shavings piled up around my feet.

The design of this horse came many years later and is a combination the shaving horses of two of my mentors. The easy to build and versatile base came from one of Curtis Buchanan’s shaving horses and the clamping head and work platform came from Carl Swennsson. Together they make a versatile workholding device that is quick to build, solid, and easy to use. This is the horse that I built for Fine Woodworking in Issue #262. That article is a useful, but not necessary, resource for building the shaving horse.

The plans come printed at 1/2 scale on paper and rolled into a tube for shipping. International orders are for digital plans, as the cost of international shipping is three times the cost of having the plans printed at a local print shop.

Build a Thoroughbred Shaving Horse

Synopsis: This simple, elegant shaving horse is a hybrid of two designs by two of Tim Manney’s mentors. The base comes from chairmaker Curtis Buchanan’s horse, and the clamping mechanism is a simplified version of Carl Swensson’s. The result is a strong, simple-to-build horse that adjusts easily for different workpiece sizes and has great holding power and ergonomics.

The first woodworking I ever did was on a shaving horse. I had just turned 20, and a 12-year-old sat me down at a shaving horse with a drawknife and taught me how to make a spatula from a piece of red maple firewood. I was hooked. The simple elegance and intuitive feel of the horse and drawknife completely drew me in as shavings piled up around my feet. Since then I’ve had the good fortune to spend countless hours on shaving horses and to work extensively with other shaving horse aficionados.

My current horse is the offspring of great horses built by two of my mentors. The base comes from Curtis Buchanan’s horse, and the clamping mechanism is a simplified version of Carl Swensson’s. By crossbreeding these two steeds I got a strong, simple-to-build shaving horse that adjusts easily for different-size workpieces and has a very powerful grip. It looks similar to traditional dumbhead-style horses, which grip the work with a block-shaped head rather than a clamping bar, but it offers increased holding power and better ergonomics. For me, the horse starts with a single 16-ft. 2×10 of clear southern yellow pine. With thoughtful layout and a blemish-free plank, this is enough material for the entire horse. In New England, where I live, southern yellow pine can be hard to find. But I discovered that OSHA-approved walkboard planks for scaffolding are made of it, and a good construction-lumber supplier should have them in stock. In the absence of yellow pine, a medium-soft hardwood like tulip poplar would work, or, in the Northwest, clear Douglas fir.

The base of a shaving horse needs to be extremely solid. If the base can flex, your horse will creak, moan, and trot across the floor as you work—undesirable traits for a horse of this sort. The laminated-beam construction I use makes for a very rigid base that won’t flex under the heaviest use. To make the beam, start by milling the spacer blocks and the front leg to the same thickness, and then glue the spacer blocks between the rails. Wait to glue the front leg in place until after the spacer blocks have cured. This lets you true up the beam by passing it through the planer after the initial glue-up. It also lets you take your time to get the front leg aligned just right at glue-up.

Tim Manney’s shaving horse at Plymouth CRAFT

Last weekend Tim Manney came down to Plymouth from Maine to teach 6 Plymouth CRAFT students how to make his shaving horse. Tim;’s version is well-known now; he had an article in Fine Woodworking about it, (issue #262, Jul/Aug 2017) and in the same issue Curtis Buchanan was quoted as saying that he thinks he’s spent over 20,000 hours at a shaving horse, and that Tim’s is the best he’s used.

Tim’s main focus is that the horse can be built with everyday materials; but carefully-selected everyday materials. It’s almost all 2 x 6 or so material, some thinner stuff and a little bit of hard maple. This course was a bit of a departure for Plymouth CRAFT in that some of the work was prepped ahead of time by Tim, and there were even some machines invovled. Mostly a drill-press. Here’s some of the shots I got during the class.

Stacks of parts prepped by Tim.

Jake trimming some of the first glue-ups, the leg-to-rails.

Tim sneaking underneath, showing how to adjust the leg assembly prior to clamping the glue-up.

Tim marching down the line, checking on progress.

Winding sticks helping to line up the front & rear legs.

This was our first time running this class. We kept class size small. That gets a lot of attention, and lots of detail. Here David and Andy work together to line up the clamps on Andy’s horse. Craig must be on deck.

Half of the dumbhead assembly set up in place – to check its placement and glue-up.

This is the next step – the full dumbhead base now. It gets wedged below the “bed” of the horse.

Tim demonstrating layout for the wedge mortise.

Craig cleaning up the mortise with a chisel.

David has a small smirk on his face, as his horse is coming together.

Diane was amazing – absolute new woodworker, dove in the deep end. Now she’ll be off to a great start.

Not quite done, but nearly so. This one still needs the work surface under the head.

We got done in time to bring in some green wood & distribute some drawknives so everyone could test-drive their creation under Tim’s direction. Paula Marcoux & I shot photos of the group as they worked their horses for the first time.

Tim has measured plans available for his shaving horse, and we’ll get him back sometime to do this class again. First he has to recover. Here’s his shaving horse plans web-page https://www.timmanney.com/work/shavinghorseplans

Build a Shaving Horse with Tim Manney

Build a Shaving Horse with Tim Manney

January 31st – February 2nd, 2020; 9 am – 4 pm Plymouth, Massachusetts

Come build the celebrated Tim Manney Shaving Horse in a long weekend, guided by the man himself.

An acute and patient observer of all things edged and ergonomic, Tim has developed a versatile shaving horse that is great for holding everything from chair parts to spoon blanks.

Participants of any skill level are welcome. You will learn how to assess good qualities in a shaving horse, how to account for wood movement in the design, and how to make really good glue joints along the way. All materials will be provided, as well as most tools. Participants are encouraged to bring a sloyd knife (Plymouth CRAFT will have some for sale at reasonable rates), a block or bench plane, and a ¾” chisel. (And a few clamps, if you have’em? Why not?) Speedy completion of this design may benefit from the occasional use of Tim’s portable planer and drill press, so please bring eye and ear protection to wear around those.
