Japan&39;s Most Beautiful Cycling Route | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide
Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan’s most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.
Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!
So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.
Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

Best Cycling Path in Japan Shimanami Kaido 【ロードバイク】しまなみ海道
2020 Japan Cycling Trip Day 3: The best way to explore Japan is by bicycle. The Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道) is a cycling path going over 6 islands and bridges and is knowns as the best cycling road in Japan (or at least the most scenic).
My favorite part of the course was the Innoshima bridge, which is a dedicated bike lane path UNDER the main highway road. This is one of the most unique bike paths I have ever seen and it was amazing to experience riding there in person.
Aside from the actual bridges and bike ramps, most of the rest of the “cycling road” is actually just regular streets with a blue line painted and small shoulder. This was a little surprising, but the stunning views along the way more than solidified this as one of the best cycling routes in Japan for us!

We had limited time in Onomichi, so we decided to tackle as much of the Shimanami Kaido as we could. After consecutive days on many buses and trains, it was time for us to strap on our helmets and get on our hired bicycles!

Well, these bikes do have some drag to their tires, right? So it makes sense to feel a bit more spent over 50kms of cycling. But its alright, its great exercise nonetheless. Thanks for the great content, Chris and Sharla.

Done it 2019 can absolutely recommend it.
But renting the bikes 200-300m right to the main entrance to onomichi station on the water side is ok but you should plan two days to really enjoy it. And look for a place to stay on one island just because there is a time constraint to 6 pm to return the bike.
This gives time pressure so you can't enjoy it fully.
I would prefer to stay near sunset beach next time and rent the bike to days or try to get a e bike.
But I am not sure if the bike rent 300m right to the ferry has e bikes.
And don't forget the small rest place nearly on the end of the climb of the final bridge. There's a small Buddha figure head smiling at a tree it just gave me power to continue after a lot of cramps. Because I pushed to hard I got cramps.
