It is a permanent decision, there is NO going back
The most important thing to understand when you decide to install a wide body kit on your vehicle is that there is NO going back (exception – LibertyWalk fender replacement wide body kits). In order to install wide fenders, cutting of the front fenders and rear quarter panels is necessary. While you can replace front fenders, rear quarter panels are not replaceable (on almost all vehicles). If you think that you may want to reverse back to stock when you sell your vehicle, a wide body kit is not for you.

They make a kit for your vehicle
That’s awesome, but ask yourself “Who are they?”. When you install a wide body kit on your vehicle (or any aftermarket part for that matter) you want to make sure that you are using quality parts from a reputable company. The difference between a Pandem kit and a no-brand-name kit off of eBay is HUGE. Pandem (and similar) kits fit vehicles perfectly with little to no additional body work needed (on the kit itself). The panels are smooth and there will be no gaps in between the panel and the body of the vehicle when lined up correctly. We at Static Motorsports have seen many issues with kits from non-reputable companies. They are often times made of poor quality materials, which can result in: damage during freight, orange-peel or textured surface, poor fitment, etc. If you have a vehicle with many wide body kits available, DO NOT automatically choose the cheaper option. Knock-off kits and cheap, poor quality kits require a lot more body work and you will end up paying more for the installation. Depending on how much work is needed, you may end up paying MORE than if you had just purchased the quality kit. If they only have cheap kits for your vehicle, do your research to find out how good or poor the quality it is and decide if it’s really worth it.
The cost is more than just the kit+install
You can definitely find a wide body kit and installer to do the job for under $5k (depending on the vehicle & kit), but there is a lot more that you will need to complete the build. Other costs associated with wide body installs are: paint &/or wrap ($2k+), coilovers or bags ($1k – 4k+), 3-piece wheels ($1k+/wheel). As you can see, a full wide body build adds up quickly. An average full wide body build on an FR-S is approximately $11,000 (on the low end with used wheels, coilovers vs bags, and wrap instead of paint). We highly recommend having a budget of at least $15,000 for JDM-type vehicles, with the cost going up considerably for luxury and performance vehicle.

You want to wide body your daily driver
Don’t do it.
Further explanation shouldn’t be necessary, but here’s a few reasons why NOT to wide body your daily driver. 1 – It can take up to a few months for the build to be completed. Delays and pushed back ETAs are very common and you should not pressure your install shop with deadlines. This is what leads to shortcuts being taken and the overall quality of the build will not be as good as it could be. 2 – It is silly to drive a vehicle in poor weather conditions. Could you imagine getting in a wreck after spending thousands of dollars only to find out your insurance will not cover the after market damages? 3 – The way you drive your everyday vehicle to work/school is way different than how you drive your weekend vehicle. When you’re used to the everyday routine, you’re more likely to over-trust your driving abilities and drive less carefully. Again, could you imagine getting in a wreck in that fully built vehicle? Not to mention, the vehicle will be exposed to a lot more natural contaminants and it will shorten the lifespan of the vehicle/build. Sun damage, rock chips, bug splatter, potholes, no thank you!!
You want to turn a profit
It’s important to fully understand how certain decisions will impact the value of your vehicle. There are more factors involved if you are looking to flip a vehicle. We highly recommend working with a reputable, knowledgable shop in order to increase your chances of making a profit. Be honest about your intentions and work with your install shop to ensure you have a smooth, easy experience.

OK Guys You’ve been asking for this for some time now so I decided to get my act together and compile what I think is the most thorough how to guide on creating wide-body kits and using epoxy putty that you are likely to find anywhere. Big call perhaps but instead of carrying on (ooops, too late) I’ll just get straight into it and let you decide for yourself…
Today’s post is brought to you by myself (clearly) and the ever talented Mohammad Kemal Efhard ( @iamefhard ) who has kindly agreed to share some of the process shots from a recent Rocket Bunny inspired custom Ferrari that he built…among the many others he has made wearing the familiar bulges of the rocket powered bunny. But before we can even start to think about the Bunny we need to get familiar with the stuff it’s made of…
How To Work With and Use Epoxy Putty
The process of working with epoxy putty is the same regardless of how it is used but note that this guide was written for a build requiring putty to smooth out and hide a join between castings.
I use Milliput brand Epoxy Putty and recommend it highly. I also have a glass of water handy at all times when puttying.
I mix the two substances supplied in an even 50:50 ratio until the two colours (yellow and white) are one consistent colour (as shown in image above)
I then take as much as I need and apply it to the applicable area.
I have a few shaping and moulding tools but in most cases find my finger is far more effective at getting smooth lines and perfect transitions between panels.
The water should only be used once you have the putty in place and or when you want to clean your fingers of the excess putty that can sometimes build up on them. Overuse of the water will start to change the properties of the putty and make it too difficult to work with as it no longer wants to adhere itself to the diecast casting.
Look at your work from every angle possible and make sure there are no indentations or bulges in the putty work you have just done.
One thing I find helps is to apply more than you need initially as apposed to trying to be exact. As you scrape off the excess and push it around with your finger(s) you will find the putty compressing nicely, thus removing any and all chance of ghastly depressions ending up in your beautiful custom.
Paint Stripper, Epoxy Putty and Lessons Learned
One of the questions I get asked is whether you can apply paint stripper and other toxic chemicals to your custom hot wheels after you have applied putty. The concern here of course is whether the paint stripper will damage or eat into the hardened epoxy putty and although I can happily put that concern to rest by assuring you that this is not the case, I do have to be the bearer of bad news and say STRIP THE PAINT FIRST!
The reason I say, no scream this is because if you look at the custom below (of which you can see the full build HERE) you can see that my smooth transition across the bonnet is broken where the paint underneath stripped off. Now my custom forever has a line across the bonnet where the join is far from flawless. D’OH!
Although not related to Wide Bodies and RocketBunny Kits the above guide covers the basic process of working with Epoxy (Two Part) Putty – not to mention the fact it serves as a warning to not make the same mistakes I did! Using Epoxy Putty really is incredibly versatile and oh so easy to work with. The key points to remember are:
Work efficiently – you have about 15 – 25 minutes realistically before the putty starts to react and get just that little bit too hard to work with Keep a small bowl of water handy and use it sparingly and only after you are happy with how the putty is sitting. Ignore all this finger and water advice if you are making a widebody or Rocket Bunny Kit….LOL. (no really, totally ignore it all)
How To Make A Rocket Bunny Kit for Your Hot Wheels
I would now like to introduce Mohammad Kemal Efhard aka @IamEfhard (follow him – we can wait) who has kindly agreed to share the Work In Progress (WIP) photos from a recent Wide Bodied Rocket Bunny Ferrari he built. Due to the language barrier I have provided the instructions and commentary that go along with the images – although it has to be said that Mr Efhard has done such a thorough job of documenting the process in pictures that most of the explaining was already done. Nice one brother! Respect.
Today we are going to learn how to make something like… say, THIS! 😀
Moulding a Rocket Bunny Wide-Body Kit
As far as TOOLS REQUIRED you are going to need the following items:
Two part Epoxy Putty (d’uh)
Metal files – I use small ones (like emery boards – the paddle pop stick looking things chicks use OK sheesh) and I have a range of different grades and widths. The more options you have here the better off you’ll be basically. Got it? OK good, moving on…
Water (as discussed in the initial guide to using epoxy putty)

STEP 1
The first thing we need to do is create our flared guards – which at this initial stage look more like little cocoons – or rabbit droppings (take your pick).
This is simply a case of taking our putty and rolling it into 4 equal sections.
A good way to help with this process is to first break it up into two equal parts and shape them into larger ‘cocoons’ which you then break into halves again. This way you help ensure the 4 parts are equal in mass. Note that we will be filing away most of the excess later anyway so getting these 4 parts exact is not crucial.
STEP 2
Now we need to stick them on to our Custom Hot Wheels WIP.
The putty will naturally adhere itself to the diecast casting and as illustrated by the image above is extremely maleable (moulds easily) and yet maintains a smooth and firm shape. Keep in mind that this is only the case for about 15 minutes or so – so no dilly dallying!
STEP 3
Step 3 involves patience. And tea, lots of tea. Because now we wait.
STEP 4
Once the putty has hardened it is time to go to work with our file(s) and start to give life and shape to our Rocket Bunny and/or generic Widebody kit. Note that this is one of those skills that really does improve with practice and time. I will share some of my first attempts in an upcoming post but needless to say they look more like steaming piles of … than widebodied custom hotwheels! Obviously some will pick it up faster than others (’tis the nature of life) but regardless – you keep working with the putty and file and soon you too will be creating epic creations up there with the likes of customisers like Pisut Masanong (to name but one of the multitudes of skilled customizers out there)
When filing away the guards the key thing to remember is BABY STEPS. If you take off too much you’re screwed – basically, so ensure even and clean lines by working very lightly AND only doing small sections at a time. It’s also helpful to hold the car up to your eyes every so often and look straight down and across it so as to ensure the lines of your filing are evenly distributed and balanced.
DO NOT try to file around the entire guard in one movement – rather keep the file as flat as possible and try to maintain this as you go.
DO NOT push too heavily when filing as you instantly lose the sensitivity needed to maintain even and smooth lines.
*And always be aware of your file because the last thing you want to do is be filing away whilst the other end is inadvertently filing away a much needed section elsewhere!
STEP 5
Step 5 is really just more filing. I could have called it step 4 & a bit or something but more steps makes it look more impressive so … so.. so there!
As you can see Mohammad has filed away a significant amount of the putty and left what is essentially a primed rocket bunny kit ready to be painted.
Note that all of the excess putty AND the clean cut lines you see in the image above were all done with the file(s) No other tools are needed.
STEP 6
Now that you have shaped your wide body rocket bunny kit it is time to paint
Now it’s starting to take shape… literally! haha ha ha… groan.
STEP 7 – Bonus Bits
Seeing as your new custom Hot Wheels build now has a much wider stance it is only fitting that the underbody is modified to match. This of course involves actually extending the base out, which at first glance seems impossible… Unless you’ve got some expired credit cards or membership cards lying around…
Mr Efhard shows us some customizer ingenuity by taking his SIM card placeholder and cutting it to the desired shape and thus created an extended lip or front diffuser for his custom wide bodied Ferrari.
Step 8 – Final Touches
Now it’s time to put your custom back together and add any Hot Wheels Decals and other racing livery you might want to add.
Not happy with your Rocket Bunny Kit? That’s fine because by using a fine paint brush or fine tipped permanent marker and marking the edges of the widebody kit we can turn our Rocket Bunny into a Liberty Walk kit.
Now that you have mastered the widebody custom AND the use of epoxy putty the sky is the limit! Go out there and let your mind wander – and then build wherever it takes you. Of course, now that you’ve made one sweet ass widebody kit you’ll probably want to make lots more. Mohammad did 😉
