#3522: A1 Abalone Noodle

I got two of these packs sent to me from two sources. The First was from a reader named James from California. The second from a My Ramen Box subscription box (use coupon code THERAMENRATER for a discount). Thanks to both!

Well, I’ve been kind of weirded out by this one. Abalone (at least artificially flavored) noodle varieties have never been my favorite. I’ve never tried abalone in the real world either. They look kind of odd and funky. But I’ve really enjoyed many things that would fall in that category. Braised intestine in Taiwan is one of my favorite things, so who knows, I might really like this. We shall see.

A1 Abalone Noodle – Malaysia

Detail of the side panels (click to enlarge). Contains abalone. To prepare, add in powder base and liquid from retort pouch with 450ml boiling water until ‘strong aroma develops.’ Add in noodle block and cook 3 minutes. Add in abalone for 10 seconds. Finally, stir and enjoy!

Finished (click to enlarge). Added chicken, Salad Cosmo organic mung bean sprouts, and spring onion. Noodles appear to be non-fried and came out quite nice. Broth has a strong and savory chicken flavor which was very welcoming. The abalone? A pleasant surprise – a chewy piece which was quite cook – like a large clam, honestly. Before I post a “real recipe “tomorrow, here’s a fun review for my most recent instant noodles discovery. It is the A1 brand of abalone instant noodles. Since it was the first time I heard of real abalones in instant noodles, curiosity got the better of me. I looked high and low for it and finally bought it from Bukit Merah NTUC, even though I stayed in the East. That was a few months back. Currently, they are much more readily sold and I saw it in my neighbourhood NTUC, haha. Read on to find out our verdict.

Instant ramen block – weighs 84 grams

These are mainly what you are paying for – two tiny abalones. I think the photos make them appear much bigger than they are in real life. They are like the size of the old Singapore $1 coin? The abalones are contained in a tin foil packaging with gravy broth.

The seasoning powder which is a very delicious herbal soup.

So my expectations were really high. The two abalones, which I presumed carried the bulk of the price tag, were tiny and not really good in my humble opinion – better off with canned pacific clams. But the herbal seasoning was excellent and I really liked that. The price will deter me from buying again, but if they ever come out with an affordable version of the instant noodles with the herbal seasoning powder sans abalones, it will become a staple in my pantry.
