What Is Art Nouveau?

The ornamental Art Nouveau design style emerged in France in the late 19th century and became widely popular across Europe, with the style applied to art, architecture, posters, jewelry, furniture, and textiles. Although Art Nouveau had fallen out of fashion by 1910, contemporary designers and illustrators are now revisiting and modernising the style to bring an emotive, romantic quality to their work. Here, we’ll look at the defining characteristics of the Art Nouveau movement and how you can emulate the style in your own designs.

Terry Moore: How To Draw Art Nouveau

It’s Studio Sunday May 24, 2020 with Robyn and Terry Moore.

This Week’s Q&A:
1. What comic format do you prefer, American or European?

2. Why did you include many art forms and writing styles in Strangers In Paradise? Why haven’t you continued that in recent books?

Art Time!
How I draw in the art nouveau style. It is a challenge to transition from storytelling art to the romantic, lush and unrealistic style of 1900. Here’s a look at the work I’ve done the past two weeks to make that transition in order to draw 6 pictures that will comprise a new portfolio.

Painting Modern ART NOUVEAU! // Watercolor & Color Pencils Tutorial

Where the 1960s "psychedelic" look came from

The hippie aesthetic owes a lot to Art Nouveau.

When you picture hippies, you probably picture bell bottoms, long hair, and LSD. You might also think of a very specific graphic design and illustration style, seen on concert posters and album covers: curly, cloudy, barely legible lettering, trippy color combinations, and decorative meandering borders. This style was first conceived in San Francisco by a handful of designers in the late 1960s. Their job? Make posters for bands like The Byrds, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller Band, Jimi Hendrix … all of whom were just getting their start, competing for nightly stage time at venues like the Fillmore and the Avalon.

But these designers didn’t invent that nowiconic style. In fact, they were heavily influenced by an art movement that started in the late 1800s called Art Nouveau.

  2. Modern Artists could learn something from the philosophy behind Aet Noveau. Art today is over intellectualised. To quote:-
"Art is not to be studied like science or maths. They thought Art flows from the soul, twists thought the consciousness and decorates life with its beauty"

  3. Art Nouveau 1890-1910 – concentrated on nature in its purest form. This period was brief, but produced a wide range of products from ceramics, statues, radiators, yes I said radiators, bedding, wallpaper, paintings, furniture and the list goes on.
