Cool Grease Fiber Grease Pomade Review — The Pomp

Texture

The texture of the product is strangely thicker than the Red and Blue. In comparison to the other fiber products we’ve looked at here on the blog (Admiral Fiber and Bona Fide Fiber), the consistency of Fiber Grease is thicker.

Application

Yet, it applies slightly easier than other two I mentioned. I’m guessing it’s due to the original formula of Cool Grease. If you notice, the fiber products from most lines still use a base that is similar to the their original pomade. This makes Bona Fide Fiber apply like JS Sloane which sucks. Admiral Fiber is the true truest truly fiber…and so, in its nature, dry to application and difficult. Fiber Grease is a tad dry in comparison to the Red and Blue, but still easy to apply.

I will talk more about this later, but note now…we can challenge Fiber Grease on how much of a FIBER product it is. If it weren’t for its label, I would not have known it was a fiber-based pomade. Whether or not you hold it against this pomade is up to you…it’s performance is still unbelievable.

Slickness

The pomade (despite being a fiber) is a pretty slick product. This is what we expect and in all honesty, not what a person who uses fiber pomade is looking for. Typically, a user chooses fiber pomades for their matte-look, dryness, and to obtain a textured look. But…THIS is what I’m looking for. It holds my hair together, yet it still has a liveliness to it. I’m talking about the ‘bounce’ we experienced with the Red and Blue. Thankfully, the fibers here tame the ‘bounce’ and make it all the more predictable.

Shine

The chart is a lie. This product is shiny. I like that, but if you basing your choice off the chart…it’s not right with this one.

Strength

This pomade lacks raw strength, but that doesn’t mean it lacks holding power. There are a lot more factors that play into how a product performs in terms of creating a nice and formidable pompadour. As you can see, the pompadour is tall as hell and has a beautiful shape to it. Also, take into account that my hair is unusually short right now (barely down to my nose)…this only make this pomade ever the more exceptional.

You’ll notice in the last picture of this section, my back is completely fucked up. This is due to my short hair and also, the nature of this pomade. You can control this with a stronger pomade, but this pomade…isn’t intended to provide this level of hold.

Would you use a Subaru WRX STI (hatchback, of course) to do the work of a Ford King Ranch? The WRX has power…but a different kind of power.

Pomade Review: Cool Grease’s Fiber Grease – An Excellent Fiber

I know I’m a little late to the game when it comes to Cool Grease products. They’ve been reviewed by multiple reviewers already, but my channel and my blog exist to document my experiences with the grooming products I acquire. Thus, I don’t care if I’m late to the game. I did, however, take a hint from other reviewers. The general consensus amongst many other pomade reviewers is that Cool Grease’s Fiber Grease is the best of the line. So, let’s start with the one everyone claims is the best, shall we?

Before we delve into the review, I would like to mention that this is the first fiber pomade being reviewed on this blog and the YouTube Channel. Since I try to make my reviews as accessible for introductory pomade users as possible, I believe some educational information is in order.

Cool Grease is a line of gel-type water-based pomades produced by Fine Cosmetics in Japan. What makes these products so popular is that they are well-known for not drying up or hardening up in the hair at all, yet still only requiring water to rinse out completely.

A fiber pomade is typically a gel-type water-based formula infused with microfibers. The fibers are supposed to align with your hair to provide extra control and malleability while remaining lightweight. Ideally, you want one that doesn’t harden up like a gel pomade typically does. You want one that stays re-workable all day.

It should also be noted that I bought this product from Hedgelion. As of now, Hedgelion is the only truly reliable retailer of Cool Grease products in the United States. And, if you are ordering from within the States, you can acquire the product and receive free shipping.

First Impressions

Packaging and Presentation: Fiber Grease comes in a yellow, plastic 87g jar. I’m no expert on metric conversions, but I believe that puts it near the 3oz size range. The labeling is printed directly to the container and features a retro-style checkerboard motif we might commonly associate with taxicabs and 1950s-style design sensibility. Overall, it looks bright and well put together. Opening it up, you’ll see a slightly cloudy, silvery-white product inside.

Scent: When I smell this product, I’m reminded of the Welch’s grape soda I used to sometimes drink as a kid. Nice and nostalgic, but it’s a little too sweet. Either way, as with most gel-pomades, this scent isn’t even noticeable after having it in your hair for a couple minutes.

Application and Styling

Consistency: The product feels a tad sticky, and it scoops out pretty thick. You’d think this product is heavy holding, but first impressions can be wrong.

Breakdown: As with any gel-pomade, it smears in the hands instantly.

Application: As we should expect with any good gel-pomade, applies to the hair effortlessly.

Pre-Styling: Didn’t require any effort to comb my hair back to begin styling. I was able to form a nice, clean part in very little time. This pomade also feels slightly sticky. Sticky enough for control, but not so sticky that it feels gummy or tacky in the hair.

Time: This is the shortest video review I’ve done in weeks. That speaks to Fiber Grease’s excellent styling characteristics. Took me almost zero effort to style with.

Performance

Control: Due to the (slightly noticeable) presence of the fiber aspects and the fact that the product is sticky to a degree, everything was excellently controlled. My hair always looks extremely neat with this product. It did play to my waves ever so slightly but in an aesthetically sensible fashion.

Weight: This product is extremely lightweight, which is a hallmark trait of a good fiber.

Hold: Definitely in the medium ballpark. Somewhere between a light medium and true medium.

Hardening: Zero hardening. That’s the feature everyone loves most about Cool Grease products. They may initially stiffen just ever so slightly at first, but they are, in fact, the easiest gel-type water-based pomades to dry-comb through. That is due to the fact that they do not actually harden or dry up in the hair.

Endurance: Due to it being a fiber, my hair endured exceptionally well. I only restyled it a few times throughout the day to test that aspect out. Otherwise, I had no reason to touch up my hair at all.

Shine: It has a slight shine to it. Many fiber products are matte, but this one isn’t.

Re-styling: Honestly, I think re-styling with this product looks better than the initial styling. Give it about 90 minutes in your hair, and then re-style with it. You’ll see what I mean. Also, another noteworthy point about restyling, this product is really good at helping you reshape your hair to the style you initially had. It’s reshaping characteristics are phenomenal.

Rinsing: Run water through your hair, and you will become pomade-free once again. Gotta love water-solubles.

Final Verdict

I’ve tried a few of the Cool Grease pomades. I’d say that, out of all of them, Fiber Grease is definitely one of the better ones. However, as all reviews from all reviewers are subjective, that’s just opinion. I advise you to go on Hedgelion and read the descriptions of each Cool Grease products and judge for yourself which one would best suit your hairstyling needs.

Overall, my favorite characteristics of this pomade are that it remains reworkable all day and that it’s extremely light in the hair. I also like that, because it was so easy to work with, it allowed me to shoot a shorter video, so that’s always nice!

It seems that, once again, my buyer’s luck has struck gold. Some of you who read or watch my reviews might be wondering why I rarely post negative reviews. My answer is that I’ve simply had great luck with the products I’ve chosen to acquire and review. I don’t always like a product, but many of the ones I have, I do like. It really takes a lot for me to not like a pomade. Fiber Grease is one that I’m both pleased and impressed with.

Buy it on Hedgelion here.
