Cool Grease Blue Pomade Review — The Pomp
Texture
This feel of this pomade before it gone into your hair is similar to that of Boulevard Nights. The pomade has a real Jell-O like look and feel, but is slightly resistant to agitation or scooping. This is unconsciously prevent you from using to much product.
Application
The pomade applies very easily. It’s got a slick and oily feel to it which plays into the bounce-characteristic on this product. I’ll explain later. The pomade goes in easily and isn’t sticky at all. We come across this problem every once in a while with water-based pomades where the brewer made it a lil too sticky. This isn’t the case here.
Slickness
For a water-based pomade, this is some slick shit AND in the same fashion as a normal oil-based pomade. These categories that I split my review into….they slightly change in definition between water and oil based pomades. This product prevents strays with slickness and not strength. This is something we see with very slick oil-based pomades, but a first with water-based pomades. The pomp and sides are kept together, but a lack in strength (as I’ll explain later on) can’t hold it together. It’s analogous to a comparison of micro versus macro. Slickness holds individual hairs together while strength keeps the pomp, as a whole, together.
Shine
This was a surprise. I didn’t think I’d find a water-based pomade that would keep a shine like Layrite Super Shine until now. It keeps a shine through the whole day…with little loss after a few hours. It’s also not an absurd shine…it’s moderate and very nice.
Strength
I wish it had more strength. I mean…yeah….I can style with it. Of course. I can style with almost anything at this point, but that’s not how we should judge the pomade. It should satisfy what we want, not just what we need. BUT PLEASE…don’t take this mindset into the rest of your life.
But yes, I wanted more strength. The lack of strength here make it difficult to balance out and fight the bounce this pomade had. It also made the product slightly unpredictable at times…and this is with my fine, straight hair. Good luck taming anything with this pomade.

Cool Grease products are certainly a unique bunch, and I’ll be adding more reviews of them to this blog and the channel from time to time.
Cool Grease Blue is often compared many times to the Red, so before you continue reading this review, you might want to check out the one I did for the Red here.
So, the Blue is very similar to the Red in the sense that it has a medium hold and doesn’t dry in the hair. However, the differences are very minute and really make a difference if you pay attention to them. As you read this review, I’ll be sure to make note.

First Impressions
Packaging and Presentation: The Blue comes in the same plastic container as the rest of the Cool Grease line, which is somewhere in the 3oz range. I’m not a metric conversion expert, but I know it’s roughly around 3oz after a Google crash course on the metric system. This time, the aesthetic theme is a 1950s-style greaser anime character. On the lid, it says “Super Shaping Pomade”.
Scent: To me, it smells exactly like blue Gatorade. It continues along with the sweeter, candy and soda-type scents as are common throughout the line.
Application and Styling
Consistency: This product feels a bit less dense than the red. Still, a little goes a long way when removing product from the container.
Breakdown: Smears in the hands right away. Standard gel-pomade ish.
Application: Applies very easily with no grip, tug, or pull.
Pre-styling: No resistance when slicking everything back, but you’ll definitely feel a bit of bounce. Your hair won’t slick down tight to your skull. It’s rather interesting.
Time: Because this pomade is advertised as one meant for shaping, it really gave me little hassle when initially styling. Thus, this task was accomplished quickly.
Performance
Control: The Blue is just slightly stickier than the Red. As a result, the longer hairs on the top of my head were controlled slightly better, but some shorter ones on the sides would stick up if not for careful maintenance.
Hold: The hold is on the lighter side of medium.
Weight: This product is significantly lighter weight than the Red. Cool Grease Blue offers us opportunity to really add volume. The bounce allows for the malleability and for height.
Hardening: Cool Grease Blue doesn’t harden, just like the Red. However, it will settle just a bit more. It will stiffen up just slightly more than the Red, but still can be dry-combed with no discomfort at all.
Endurance: I mean, for a product that instantly re-styles, this one endures pretty well. It might have something to do with its slight stickiness. I didn’t feel the need to touch up much, but I do anyway for testing purposes.
Shine: This product is a lower shine than the Red. It’s not as noticeable, but still definitely present.
Re-styling: It’s a Cool Grease product, so it instantly re-styles.
Rinsing: It’s a Cool Grease product, so it instantly rinses with just water.
Final Verdict
Overall, I would say the main difference between the Red and the Blue is that they serve two different purposes. The Blue is better for shaping your hair. By that, I mean working within your hair’s natural characteristics to achieve the best look possible. The Red serves better for sculpting your hair, which means artificially working against your hair’s natural characteristics to form a style that doesn’t match any of your hair’s natural qualities.
I enjoy using both for different purposes. It’s up to you to decide what you think is the better option for what you want to accomplish with your hairstyle.
