D’Atri Special Seasoned Lettuce
Today’s recipe features Thyme After Thyme, a Song Blend spice mix, which was sent to me by the lovely folks at The Book Club Cookbook as part of their Blends Bash.
Thyme After Thyme is a great pizza seasoning–I’ve enjoyed it on pizza numerous times–but I wanted to create something new for yinz.
My Blends Bash recipe was inspired by D’Atri’s in Cumberland, Maryland. D’Atri’s is known for their hoagies and subs, all topped with their signature Special Seasoned Lettuce.
Seasoned Lettuce is a thing in Cumberland. The last time I drove through town, I stopped at a restaurant that was not D’Atri’s, and they had their own copycat version of the lettuce. That’s just how special the seasoned lettuce is!
It’s great. It’s like putting Italian dressing on your hoagie without putting Italian dressing on your hoagie. The lettuce gives you all the flavor without all the liquid. Therefore, your hoagie doesn’t get soggy and there’s a better chance that your sandwich will maintain its structural integrity. It’s easier to eat!
Now I really want a hoagie.
Seasoned Lettuce Recipe
Combine:
Shredded Iceberg lettuce
A blend of 75/25 of vegetable oil and olive oil
Liberal sprinklings of Thyme After Thyme Pizza Seasoning (oregano, basil, garlic, onion, thyme, fennel seed, red bell pepper, crushed red pepper, parsley, and marjoram
salt and pepper to taste
Marinate mix for a few hours before serving. Put it on the sandwich of your choice

The Finest — I’ve many family people and buddies who no more reside in Cumberland, but, when they’re home, among the top things on their own List is really a D’atri’s sub or sub. For all of us lucky ones who live here. hey, I’ve them on speed dial and may obtain a respectful delivery quicker than I possibly could get it ready myself.
The sandwiches will always be filled with whatever filling you order, and also the services are outstanding. And, the taste. when you consume a D’atri’s sub you’ll throw rocks in the chain sub shops. It’s like evaluating Mom’s home-cooked meals to some junk food restaurant.

Landmark Best Sub around Lives as much as Expectations I have resided in New York, Upstate New You are able to and Metro Electricity Area. But I am from Cumberland, Maryland. D’atri’s Subs is unmatched.
I have not found a sub to complement this sub. ever. After I resided away, as just about all Cumberland natives do, my first stop was D’atr’s for that Steak and Cheese Sub.
The sub has quality steak and the perfect mixture of fried onions. If you do not like onions, get them organized anyway. They are grilled perfectly. The actual secret’s the household recipe for seasoned lettuce. It is the best.
Other favorites would be the Meatball Sub with thick sauce and also the Steak and Cheese Salad, that is a terrific way to eat Cumberland Tradition with very little Carbs. Kid friendly too. the Chicken Fingers suits the more youthful kids and it is created using real chicken. Best Kids Chicken around.

The very best sub around I increased up eating D’atri’s subs. After I moved in the area, it had been essential whenever I had been in town visiting. Even today, when i become vegetarianism, I’ll make the best while in town and prevent set for one! I will be moving to Cumberland soon and should not wait to celebrate having a D’atri’s steak sub! You cannot fail. Oh, and they’ve tasty donuts, too!

Finest sub shop ever They’ve fabulous subs and also the best wings around. Great service plus they always support the meals they serve. They’re always prepared to hand back to the small community. My on vacation family has to obtain a D’atri sub once they arrived at Cumberland. Exactly what is a Saturday night without great wings?

Best Food This option possess the best subs anywhere bar none! Whenever I visit my loved ones in PA I usually make a minumum of one visit to D’atri to obtain a sub. They’re very generous when stuffing their subs. 100% much better than any across the country known subshop.

As for food, there are a few places that serve “country” type food like Kline’s and Bunny’s, but most of the “local” food is Italian-American style dishes and hoagies. Cumberland is much like Clarksburg and Fairmont, WV in this respect. Pepperoni Rolls are baked in the city and sold at local convience stores. Nearly every restaurant has steak subs, Italian hoagies, Chicken Parm subs, all topped with seasoned lettuce. Chicken wings are another speciality, since a couple of brothers from Buffalo opened “J.J.’s chicken wings” back in the 1980s. The recipe caught on and nearly every local carryout joint has great wings.

He wears suspenders, hitches his pants up to his belly. Some of his teeth are blacked out for the “performance.” He just acts a fool in a way that seems to mimic country dancing and Appalachian folks.
I never thought it was funny, but my wife (raised in the hills west of Frederick, east of Hagerstown) has been ready to level him a few times. 04-20-2011, 10:02 AM westsideboy Location: Cumberland 6,183 posts, read 9,862,934 times Reputation: 4854 Seasoned lettuce is a local/regional thing as far as I know. You put olive oil, garlic salt, and oregano on the lettuce, toss it around, then top the sub with it.
Hmmm….never heard of the actor in “hillbilly” face before, but that is very insulting. Rural whites are just about the last group of Americans it is OK to openly mock and put down. 04-20-2011, 10:32 AM HandsUpThumbsDown Location: NYC 7,311 posts, read 12,611,147 times Reputation: 3714 Quote: westsideboy Originally Posted by Seasoned lettuce is a local/regional thing as far as I know. Perhaps if the hillbilly pulled his stunt 25 years ago in section 34 of Memorial Stadium, instead of the club level of Oriole Park, he would not be as popular. I dunno.
We’ll see Sunday if he’s still putting on this act. That sounds like an awesome topping. I’ll try it sometime myself and certainly the next time I’m in Cumberland (hopefully this spring sometime). It’s amazing to me that more people don’t see it this way, but you’re right.Perhaps if the hillbilly pulled his stunt 25 years ago in section 34 of Memorial Stadium, instead of the club level of Oriole Park, he would not be as popular. Think it’s called D’Atri’s or something like that. Excellent subs if I recall. 04-20-2011, 03:15 PM westsideboy Location: Cumberland 6,183 posts, read 9,862,934 times Reputation: 4854 The D’Atri family has a near monopoly on the Italian-American/hoagie business in Allegany County.
D’Atri’s Carryout/Delivery is located in Cumberland (North End technically) – specializes in subs
D’Atri’s Restaurant is in LaVale – the flagship establishment, same subs, plus more eat-in friendly options
Fratellis is in Lavale – Upscale D’Atri’s
Oscar’s in South Cumberland – same as D’Atri’s in LaVale, just in South Cumberland (my fav since it is closest)
Patrick’s in South Cumberland – same food, plus a sports bar. 04-20-2011, 11:06 PM drs72 Location: Seattle, WA 389 posts, read 751,340 times Reputation: 204 I love D’Atri’s!! You won’t find a bad item on the menu. I always recommend it to people visiting from out of town. I remember hearing that Fratelli’s was run by a member of the D’Atri family, but I didn’t know Oscar’s was. Didn’t they have a restaurant in Hagerstown too, once upon a time? 04-21-2011, 10:18 AM westsideboy Location: Cumberland 6,183 posts, read 9,862,934 times Reputation: 4854 Hmmmmmm…not sure about one in Hagerstown, I have never heard that. Oscar’s used to be owned by the family, I don’t think it is anymore, but the menu and recipes are the same. 05-14-2011, 06:42 PM LucasS6 Location: Oahu 732 posts, read 1,966,022 times Reputation: 318 Can’t help but laugh at you guys getting upset about stereotypes while- that’s right- stereotyping other people.
