Women are sick and tired of having to hide their bodies. They want to be able to do with their bodies as they please – whether that means walking around in leggings all day, or wearing a bikini on the beach even though they don’t have the “beach body” everyone expects them to have. Quite frankly, women seem to be done worrying about what everyone is expecting them to look like. They are showing off their bodies to make a statement: look, we’re here, we feel good, we are trying to love ourselves just the way we are and don’t want to be slaves to society’s standards anymore.

This year kicked off with a lot of controversy surrounding Cardi B‘s twerking in the music video for City Girls’ song Twerk. People were saying that she is hurting the #MeToo movement by expressing her sexuality so publicly. Then there was the woman who nearly got kicked off a plane for wearing a crop top. There was a food blogger who got awful criticism for eating out at a restaurant wearing what looked like a bralette. What women want in a man is faithfulness and dependability, a sense of humor, the ability to listen, and a sense of style. Only 13 percent of women cited muscular build as a factor in physical attractiveness. On the other hand, 66 percent of women said moral integrity will “make me quiver.”

It can all seem a little daunting. To be a good man, I need to be funny and dependable and I have to listen?

The better news: Women’s two-piece attitudes don’t signal an epidemic of overall body hatred. “You can have great body image without feeling good in a bikini,” says body-image expert Kjerstin Gruys, Ph.D., an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Nevada in Reno. “Healthy body image is more about viewing your appearance as only one small part of your overall sense of self.” And among the women we surveyed, there was an overwhelmingly happy response to a less body-centric question. When asked, “Do you think you’re beautiful?” more than two-thirds said yes. Jennifer, 46, an entrepreneur in Allentown, Pennsylvania, who wears size 6, explains: “After having my kids and surviving cervical cancer, my standards have changed. I don’t want to wear a bikini. When I look in the mirror, I focus on my beautiful hair, toned muscles, and happy smile.”

Across the board, around the world, if there’s one body part women struggle to love, it’s their stomach.
