NBA Slam Dunk Contest: Dwight Howard’s Revenge

One year ago, Dwight Howard jumped 12 ft. 6 in. and put a sticker on the backboard while completing the dunk.

He had a dunk lined up for the finals where he would actually kiss the rim.

He was then eliminated because the “judges” felt that his dunk wasn’t nasty enough.

I was shocked, and so were his teammates. Pretty much everybody felt that he was robbed.

This year, Dwight Howard was back with a vengeance.

He began by coming from behind the backboard, nearly hitting his head, and dunking it while his head was still behind the hoop. Sure, that’s been seen before, but only when one person throws it to another, he did it alone.

The dunk received a well deserved 50 by the judges.

Gerald Green, last years dunk contest winner, decided to put a cupcake on the rim, light a candle, and blow it out as he dunked. A very impressive feat. He received much praise for his originality and jumping ability.

Then the time for the second dunk of the first round. Howard decided it was time to pay respect to Soulja Boy, by removing his jersey to show that he had a Superman outfit on and added a cape to top it all off. YOOOOOOUUUUU!

He didn’t even dunk it, he had room to literally throw the ball into the hoop with authority.

Another 50.

Greene put his teammate on top of a ladder and had him hold it out straight-armed. He grabbed the ball and somehow had time for a windmill. He finished with authority and yet another impressive dunk.

Time for the finals, Howard vs. Green.

Green goes first. He catches the ball off a bounce, goes between the legs, and dunks it. He doesn’t want Howard to run off and take the contest without some sort of challenge.

Howard, on the other hand, decides that he should put the contest away with one dunk. He throws up the ball, then uses one hand to knock it against the back-board and then uses the other hand to finish the dunk. He again gets insaine air underneath him.

It seems like Howard’s suggestion for a 12 foot rim isn’t so crazy for him to use.

Greene knows his defeat. He loses his shoes and does a basic windmill. The crowd knows it’s over, Greene knows it’s over, but it doesn’t seem like Howard does.

He spent plenty of time planning these dunks, so he is going to use them.

Howard sets a smaller hoop next to the regulation hoop, and rests the ball on it. He jumps, removes the ball from the miniature hoop, and puts it into the larger one. Another amazing dunk.

Howard wins with 78 percent of the vote.

He had a few of the best dunks of all time on his quest to bring back the dunk contest from obscurity.

It may be a year too late, but Dwight Howard, enjoy your trophy and your victory. You have just single-handidly saved the Dunk Contest.

NBA denies Howard’s request to raise rim to 12 feet during dunk contest

For the second succesive year, Dwight Howard’s proposal to have the rim raised to 12 feet during the annual dunk contest at All-Star Weekend has been rejected by the NBA, adding to a week of frustration for Howard after his recent play and focus was publicly questioned by coach Stan Van Gundy.

The league office confirmed to ESPN.com on Tuesday that the Orlando Magic’s All-Star center has again formally requested to have the rim hiked from the regulation 10 feet to 12 feet for at least one of his dunks in New Orleans this weekend, as Howard continues to seek ways to prove that his leaping ability is no less impressive that the hops possessed by shorter rivals.

Yet as with last February in Las Vegas — when Howard was planning to wow judges with a 360 dunk at 12 feet and an attempt at 11½ feet which called for him to shift the ball between his legs in mid-air — league officials balked.

They’ve ruled that changing the height of the rim, while easily done mid-contest with the help of hydraulics, clashes with their intent to apply as many standard NBA rules to All-Star Weekend contests as possible.

The decision also potentially affects Memphis’ Rudy Gay.

The 6-9 swingman recently issued a challenge in an NBA.com blog entry in which he vowed to match whatever the 6-11 Howard did on a 12-foot rim.

Gay wrote: “Before I go, I have a message for Dwight: You have that idea about moving the goal to 12 feet? If you want to do it, go ahead and do it. I’m pretty confident in my jumping ability. If you go before me, I’ll leave it up there and do my dunk.”

Minnesota’s Gerald Green, the defending champion, followed up with a claim that he’d seek to have the rim raised three feet higher than regulation to 13 feet because “12 feet might be a little too short for me.”

Toronto rookie Jamario Moon is the other entrant in a four-man field.

Howard is attempting to be the tallest dunk champion ever. Larry Nance was a 6-10 champion in the NBA’s inaugural contest in 1984, nearly two years before Howard was born.

To back his argument that dunks are not easier for big men, Howard unveiled a “sticker dunk” in Vegas in which he slapped a sticker 12 feet, 6 inches high on the backboard with his left hand after catching a bounce pass from Magic teammate Jameer Nelson and dunking with his right hand. But the dunk didn’t score high with judges who were apparently unclear on the sticker part, leading a frustrated Howard to initially say that he would boycott future contests.

The 2008 contest will be the first in league history that gives fans final say on who wins. A panel of judges will decide which two dunkers advance to the finals, but fans voting on NBA.com or by text message will choose the champion.

Has anyone Dunked on a 12-foot Basketball Rim? | Yes!

Dunkers are getting more creative and jumping higher than ever. When jumping 50 inches seemed impossible many pro dunkers are able to do so.

But has anyone dunked on a 12-foot basketball rim? Yes, Michael Wilson who played for the Harlem Globetrotters has the record for the highest dunk ever. Dunking a 12-foot rim off two feet, he is the only player where the rim was measured so everyone could see that it was in fact 2 feet higher than a regulation rim.

There have been other players who have claimed that they have dunked on 12 feet, we are going to take a look at these claims and examine if, in fact, they are true.

How high is 12 feet actually?

To put 12 feet into perspective, 12 feet is equivalent to 3.6576 meters or 4 yards. 12 feet is also 144 inches.

If you look at the backboard we can see the white-painted lay-up box is eleven and a half feet tall (11’6).

That is 18 inches just above the rim, if you visualize 6 inches just above the top of the layup box that is where 12 feet is.

How high was Michael Wilson’s Vertical Leap?

Michael Wilson known as the “Wild Thing” was a basketball player who played for the University of Memphis before playing in the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies for one season.

Wilson would take his talents to tour and play with the Harlem Globetrotters. This is where he set the 12-foot record.

As we already mentioned Michael Wilson may be the only player on record that has actually dunked a basketball on a 12-foot rim.

He did this during a dunk competition on April 1, 2000. No, it wasn’t an April fools joke.

The record still stands today as the highest dunk in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Wilson’s vertical was measured at 52 inches standing at a height of 6 feet 5 inches tall, with a reach of 8 feet 3 inches or 99 total inches.

Wilson only needs 21 inches to touch a ten-foot rim and 45 inches to touch a 12-foot rim.

Some dunkers lie about their vertical but Wilson’s numbers are accurate as he was tested at the University of Memphis with a 52-inch running vertical leap.

This gives him enough inches to be able to accomplish this feat.

The official dunk was an alley-oop from a teammate making it a little easier to make the dunk when compared to dunking the basketball on his own.

You need fewer inches to dunk a basketball off an alley-oop than when you attempt a dunk on your own without one.

Dexton Crutchfield Claims he Dunked 12 Feet

Youtube Star Dexton Crutchfield has a successful Youtube channel with almost 500k subscribers.

His claim to fame is that he can jump really high at a height of 5 feet 9 inches tall, and I wouldn’t doubt he had close to 50-inch running vertical in his prime.

I actually was a subscriber to his channel until one day he posted a video of himself dunking on what was supposedly 12 feet.

I didn’t have an issue with it until I did the math, more on this later.

In the video you see him raising the hoop and measuring it with a tape measure. I thought to myself, he is the same height as me with probably the same reach, no way he can pull this off.

But he did. If you are wondering about the tape measure, it wouldn’t be hard to cut off 2 feet and reconnect it, case closed.

So let’s do the math for someone who is 5 feet 9 inches tall. I’m 5 feet 9 inches tall and so is Dexton.

How many inches would I need to touch the rim, dunk a 10-foot rim, dunk an 11-foot rim, and dunk a 12-foot rim?

Touching a 10-foot rim at 5 feet 9 inches Tall

My standing reach is 7 feet 4 inches tall, or 88 inches. A 10-foot hoop is 120 inches high. I need 32 inches just to touch the rim. (Minus my shoes take off an inch if you want).

Dunk a basketball on a 10-foot rim

At a reach of 7 feet 4 or 88 inches My vertical would need to be close to 40 inches to dunk. I am giving myself at least 8 inches to dunk a basketball give or take.

In my prime I was able to miss dunks off self-lobs, measuring my vertical in the high 30s. $0 inches would have definitely had me dunking in my opinion.

Dunk a basketball on an 11-foot rim

Again I have an 88-inch reach, to touch an 11-foot rim would require me to have a 44-inch vertical. To dunk 11-feet we add an extra 8 inches, this would require a 52-inch vertical leap.

You can already see where this is going. But could Dexton dunk 11 feet, I actually think he probably could and should have titled his video to 11-foot dunk.

I do think the dunking community probably wants no part of his claims as I have not seen him dunking with his former friends in the past couple of years but this could be due to covid.

Dunk a basketball on a 12-foot rim

Lastly, in case you forgot my 88-inch reach, to touch a 12-foot rim, I would need a staggering 56-inch vertical jump. To dunk the basketball we are talking 64-inch running vertical jump.

The claims of Dexton are bogus for sure, even if he had an 8-foot reach which is 96 inches. To touch the rim would require 24 inches, which would mean he would still need 56 inches to dunk the basketball.

But standing at 5 feet 9 inches it is very unlikely he has this reach and if you want to take off an inch because of his shoes by all means, and if you think it doesn’t take 8 inches I disagree.

But even at 6 inches over the rim were still looking at almost high 50’s into 60 inches.

At a standing reach of 92 inches or 7 feet 8 inches and 6 inches over the rim to dunk a basketball, we are looking at 28 inches to touch a 10-foot rim and 52 inches to touch a 12-foot rim.

To dunk a 12-foot rim we are looking at 58 inches.

Dexton’s Claims are insane but he has a lot of younger fans believing the hype, to each their own.

I think he makes great videos and is entertaining, as long as he has people talking he’s doing something right.

Dwight Howard’s Dunk Was not 12 feet at the 2009 Dunk Comp

Dwight Howard who played for the Orlando Magic attempted what was believed to be a 12-foot dunk at the NBA dunk contest in 2009.

He dunked on 12 feet off an alley-oop from a teammate off the backboard with a two-foot jump and two hands. It did it fairly easily.

There were two basketball hoops side by side and you can tell that the hoop wasn’t 12 feet. When you line up the rim to the standard 10-foot hoop it appears to be level with the layup box which is 11 and a half feet high.

Rumor has it the NBA would not allow Dwight to dunk on the 12-foot rim. While I do believe he could have done it as he did so on the 11-foot 6-inch rim without even trying.

I also believe that most dunk competitors understand what they are capable of and are not going to attempt a dunk they have no idea they could make.
