Go-karts are small, four-wheeled vehicles used for racing or off-road recreation. Most recreational go-karts run on 125 cc two-stroke engines that are powered by gasoline. Some go-karts used in professional racing have larger engines and can reach higher speeds, although amusement parks and other public recreational centers typically place a gubernator on go-kart motors that prevent the carts from going faster than 15 to 25 mph.

Go-kart motors are internal combustion engines in which gasoline is sprayed into a combustion chamber. The resulting combustion creates power that drives the motor’s piston. A two-stroke motor completes an entire combustion cycle in only two piston movements rather than four, as is the case with most automobile engines. Gasoline enters the combustion chamber through a fuel intake line; the flow of gasoline is regulated by a reed valve. The motor’s spark plug causes the fuel to combust, which drives the piston in the crank case. Byproducts of the combustion process exit the motor through an exhaust outlet, which funnels the gases out through the go-kart’s tailpipe. The piston inside a typical go-kart motor displaces 125 cc of air, making the motor rather powerful given the size of an average go-kart.

The motor is attached to the go-kart’s powertrain, which consists of the drive shaft attached to the cart’s main axle. Believe it or not, many professional NASCAR and Formula 1 drivers start their careers with go-karting. It’s an easy sport or activity to pick up on a weekend and the barrier to entry is extremely low. You can either rent a go-kart at the race track, or if you’re more serious you may opt to buy your own.
Even though go-karts are quite simplistic compared to cars, many people don’t understand the basics of how a go-kart actually works. They do contain parts that may be complex for some people to understand (engine, braking system, and so on), so I will focus on keeping the explanation as simple as possible.
In fact, understanding how they work isn’t as hard as you think it is. They’re much less complex than a sophisticated racing car.
Go-Kart Parts
In order to understand how go-karts work, let’s first acquaint ourselves with the individual parts. To make this understandable to a wider audience, we won’t go into too much detail. I’ve compiled a separate list of all essential go-kart parts. For now, here a list of the 6 most common parts and how they function on a go-kart:
1. Seat
You will notice that most often go-karts will have bucket seats. These seats are designed to wrap around your back. The seat contour prevents riders from being flung out of the karts when turning into sharp corners at high speeds.
Recreational go-karts or off-road karts will typically have padded seats which are more comfortable. Racing go-karts on the other hand are designed to be as light as possible and will often just be made of plastic or fiberglass to reduce the overall weight of the go-kart.
2. Tires
Go-kart tires are usually 10″ – 11″ tall and 5″ to 8″ wide. You’ll find wider tires on the back of the go-kart, as most of the weight is distributed towards the rear end. These tires are usually small in height and wide, to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Go-karts are usually equipped with one of the three most common tire types.
Slicks are used for dry conditions and are designed for racing. You can either opt for soft tires which provide high amounts of grip but also wear out faster, or hard tires that offer less grip but last longer.
Wets are also known as rain tires and are used for wet weather conditions. They are grooved to provide maximum amounts of grip in rainy conditions and are designed to prevent aquaplaning.
Special tires are used for different types of races or occasions. They are commonly used for dirt, off-road or recreation. Concession or recreational (non-racing) go-karts tend of have larger tires that make for a smoother ride.
3. Steering
Go-kart steering wheels are simple in design and are typically made of aluminum. They’re commonly around 10″ – 12″ in diameter. A steering wheel has three mounting holes that connect to the steering shaft (part of the steering column), which attaches to the front axle.
Higher quality go-kart steering wheels are wrapped with neoprene and feature molded finger grip grooves that provide riders with an ergonomic grip. Comfort on the steering wheel is extremely important, as vibrations and hard turns can be strenuous on your grip.
Go-Karts also don’t have power steering, so you often have to keep a tight grip on the steering wheel. The lack of comfort of your handling can greatly impact your racing experience.
4. Engine
You’ll see go-karts equipped with either a gasoline engine or an electric motor depending on its type.
Gasoline engine on go-karts are either two stroke (up to 18,000 rpm) or four stroke (up to 11,000 rpm). While the two stroke engine is more commonly used for racing, due to its higher revs, the four stroke is quieter and runs smoother. Here’s a list of the best engines for go-karts.
Electric motors have increased in popularity over the last few years. They can be advantageous due to their quicker acceleration, better weight distribution and the ability to reverse. 5. Chassis
The chassis of a go-kart consists of two parts. The first is the frame of the kart also referred to as the platform. It’s a metal construct where all parts are mounted onto.

2-stroke engines tend to be more prevalent in sprint karting due to their light weight and rapid acceleration, while 4-stroke engines feature prominently in endurance karting due to their fuel efficiency. 2-stroke engines are more used for kids, while 4-stroke engines are more advanced.
There are obviously far more differences, pros and cons to be weighed up with both of these engines. Below, I’ll go into those after explaining the science of an engine. Knowing how something works makes it far easier to look at that contraption, after all!
How Do Kart Engines Work?
Kart engines work like regular combustion engines do, in that the piston is the primary thing that powers them. It moves up and down in a cycle. This cycle starts with air and fuel going into the combustion chamber, then the gases get compressed, then ignited, and then finally exhaust is let out.
Combustion engines all work the same, from go-karts to road cars. As I mentioned above, it’ll get easier to see the difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines if you understand how an engine works in its most basic form.
To get power and start moving, the piston within the engine’s cylinder needs to be going up and down. Specifically, the piston needs to hit two distinct points in said cylinder to properly allow airflow and therefore get combustion to happen for the go-kart or other vehicle to get going.

Key Differences Between 2-Stroke & 4-Stroke Engines

Weight
Because 4-stroke engines have more pistons, a longer/ heavier crankshaft, and a camshaft with multiple spark plugs, it goes without saying that they’re weightier than the simpler, smaller 2-stroke variant. After all, a 2-stroke engine possesses a single piston and one spark plug to perform the whole combustion cycle.
Durability
As with anything that has a great deal of pressure put on its parts, 2-stroke engines are more likely to encounter wearing/ breakages when compared to a 4-stroke engine.
Power
When comparing each engine in terms of their raw power output, the 2-stroke engine is the winner of the pair. It combusts far more frequently than the 4-stroke, and that means more frequent, responsive power!
Maintenance
More parts mean more to fix and, of course, are more complicated to fix if things go wrong, which makes the 4-stroke the more complex of the pair. 2-stroke engines are lacking in parts and complex sets of extra valves, so they’re easy to perform regular maintenance on.
Environment
Because you aren’t mixing oil with fuel, the 4-stroke engine is considered to be more environmentally friendly than its 2-stroke counterpart. That, and the 4-stroke is also considerably quieter than the distinctive buzz-like roar of a 2-stroke engine.
Engines In Practice: What This Means In Go-Karting
So, now you know how engines work in a basic sense, what 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines are, and how the two engine types differ from one another. Although some practical applications stand out from my explanation of how the engines differ, I’m going to spend some time explaining which engines are better in go-karting specifically.
Because 2-stroke engines generate more power more frequently than their 4-stroke counterparts, and they’re also far lighter, you’ll see a lot of these 2-stroke engines on go-karts. The fact that 2-strokes are also very easy to maintain, with a lack of complicated parts to worry about, also makes them very attractive to go-kart enthusiasts.
Most, if not all, go-karts in younger age brackets have a 2-stroke engine installed, and this is because kids are lighter than adults. Lighter load, plus a lightweight, smaller kart, wrapped up with a 2-stroke, and you’ve got a winning package!
That isn’t to say that you won’t see these engines on adult karts; rental tracks will use a couple of 2-strokes to power their rigs because of how easy they are to maintain. It doesn’t really matter that the 2-strokes aren’t very efficient because, in sprint kart races, you’ll only be doing a maximum of 30 laps on most circuits.
4-Stroke Engines In Karting
For karts that spend more time on the track in longer races, a trusty 4-stroke will almost always be attached. The extra weight onboard doesn’t make such a huge impact when you want to run a long race because you won’t be hugely concerned about speed alone.
Although 4-stroke engines take more time to maintain and are generally more complicated to look after, they are generally more reliable. All of these factors make them a favorite for endurance racers. If you couple a 4-stroke with a clutch/ gear system, although this adds more weight to the rig, you’ll also reach a higher top speed potential.
This is because the engine can match the gear input of the driver and will work harder when needed, outputting that further torque which is needed for overtakes or other such maneuvers. You’ll almost always see shifter karts with a 4-stroke engine onboard for this very reason!

2-stroke engines and 4-stroke engines hold some key distinctions that set them apart from one another. The former is lightweight, making it easier for kids in go-karting and for rental units. 4-stroke engines, which are used in cars, are the more reliable and efficient option of the two.
