Which type of thermometer is the most accurate?
Digital thermometers are the most accurate way to measure body temperature. There are many types, including oral, rectal, and forehead, plus many that are multifunctional. Once you decide on the type of thermometer you want, you can think about design, extra features, and price.
Do you add a degree with Kinsa thermometer?
The Kinsa app automatically takes underarm readings into account when calculating the severity of the fever, but it does not artificially add that 0.6°C (1°F) to the temperature reading.
Which thermometer is least accurate?
A temporal artery thermometer may be more expensive than other types of thermometers. This type of thermometer may be less accurate than other types. Direct sunlight, cold temperatures or a sweaty forehead can affect temperature readings.
Where are touchless thermometers most accurate?
Ear and forehead infrared thermometers, both in-ear/on-forehead and contactless, are accurate enough to properly track a fever and are generally easier to use than stick thermometers.
What is a normal forehead temperature?
While typically 98.6°F (37.0°C) is considered a “normal” temperature, some studies have shown that “normal” body temperature can be within a wide range, from 97°F (36.1°C) to 99°F (37.2°C). Before NCITs are used, it is important to understand the benefits, limitations, and proper use of these thermometers.
What temperature is a fever forehead?
The following thermometer readings generally indicate a fever: Rectal, ear or temporal artery temperature of 100.4 (38 C) or higher. Oral temperature of 100 F (37.8 C) or higher. Armpit temperature of 99 F (37.2 C) or higher.
Do Kinsa thermometers run high?

Why is my Kinsa thermometer low?
An L or LO error message means that the Smart Ear thermometer is reading a temperature outside of its normal range. There are a few things which can cause low readings, but the most common are earwax and improper technique, so let’s rule these out first.
How can I get a free Kinsa thermometer?
Please contact your School Nurse to obtain your free thermometer. The distribution of thermometers is in an effort to provide tools that support individual and community wellness. Kinsa was originally utilized as a “FLUency program” to monitor the flu.
Is a forehead temperature accurate?
Forehead temps are the next most accurate. Oral and ear temps are also accurate if done properly. Temps done in the armpit are the least accurate. Armpit temps are useful for screening at any age.
Do you add 1 degree to forehead thermometer?
A temporal thermometer will read at about 0.5 to 1 degree lower than an oral thermometer, so you need to add 0.5 to 1 degree to get what your temperature would read orally. For example, if your forehead temperature read as 98.5°F, you could actually have a low-grade fever of 99.5°F or higher.
Is 99.3 a fever taken on forehead?

The sensitivity and specificity for the non-contact thermometer is 97%. The negative predictive value is 99%, which is especially important to rule out fever and avoid unnecessary laboratory work-up.
Are No Touch thermometers accurate?
Research has shown that, when used correctly, infrared or no-contact thermometers are just as accurate as oral or rectal thermometers. No-contact thermometers are popular among pediatricians, as kids often squirm around when trying to get a temperature read, but it also holds true in mass temperature screenings.
What thermometer do doctors recommend?
Multiuse stick thermometer (rectum, mouth, or armpit) Tympanic thermometer (ear) Temporal artery thermometer (forehead) Tympanic and temporal thermometer (ear and forehead)
Is a digital or mercury thermometer more accurate?
Both laboratory and clinical studies show that there is no significant difference in the average accuracy of the two types of thermometers, however there is a greater fluctuation of readings of temperature when using electronic thermometers.
Are forehead or oral thermometers more accurate?
For general use at home, forehead thermometers will give an idea of whether or not an individual has a fever. However, according to a 2020 study, forehead thermometers are less accurate than other methods of reading temperature, such as oral, rectal, or tympanic (ear) temperature readings.
Are ear or forehead thermometers more accurate?
Rectal temps are the most accurate. Forehead temps are the next most accurate. Oral and ear temps are also accurate if done properly. Temps done in the armpit are the least accurate.

Accurate, Fast, FDA Cleared Thermometer for Oral, Armpit or Rectal Temperature Reading
For many, many years I have struggled with finding a thermometer that is both quick and accurate, trying lots of different kinds and never being happy with them. Then two years ago I started seeing ads on facebook for the Kinsa thermometer. On Christmas Day, 2015 my son came down with a stomach bug and fever, and my thermometer went kaput, so I ordered this one. After using it for the first time, I realized I would never go back! Here are the things I especially like about it:
1. I can create different profiles for all my family members
There are 5 members in my family, and I have a created a profile for each of them. That way I don’t have to either keep track of it all on a piece of paper, or have several notes on my phone for each person.
2. I can keep track of when and how much medicine was given.
I love that I don’t have to try to think about or remember when I gave medicine last, which is very handy in the middle of the after being woken up many times by multiple sickos. I can also set a reminder to give the next dosage, which is very handy.
3. The quick read/bubble popping
The quick care is so fast, that my kids have no problem keeping it in their mouths while it’s running, even when they have a stuffy nose. Another nice this is if the child is wiggly, the thermometer takes longer to run, so they have added a fun bubble popping activity while the temp is being taken. These bubbles rise up the screen and the kids can tap them to pop them, which holds their attention and keep them still. I even like to do it when I’m sick!
4. It works over bluetooth, so I don’t have to plug it into my phone.
The quick care is my second type of Kinsa thermometer. I initially purchased the smart stick, which was great and worked well, but when the iPhone went to no plug in port, it made it difficult to use. I was also not able to check a temperature if my phone was plugged in, and it didn’t have a screen to see what the temp was. The new quick care is so much nicer! It takes care of all of those issues, plus some!
5. The customer service is prompt and friendly and truly has the people at the heart of what they do.
The customer service gives you a phone number to text with any problems or questions, and the man I have been texting with is very helpful and listens to my opinions of the thermometer and the app. There have been several things I’ve mentioned to him and he’s sent them off to the programers. The service is prompt and and very helpful.
6. The Fluency program
The fluency program is for schools. They send a thermometer to every family and staff member who signs up for it, and you can view anonymous information about illness that’s going around the school. That way I can know how to treat my child if strep or the flu is going around.
7. The price of this is very reasonable
$20 is more than reasonable for a thermometer that does more than take a temperature!
I have suggested this thermometer to all my mama friends, and I will continue to use it. Do yourself a favor and buy this!
Types of Thermometers, Their Accuracy, and How to Use Them
Guesswork is the last thing you want to rely on when someone is sick. Here’s an overview of medical thermometers, how to use them, and what their measurements mean.
Like any other device in your home, it’s important to understand how your thermometer works. Not every type works the same way or is designed to provide the same temperature readings.
There are many types of contact and contact-free thermometers to choose from. The ages of your household members, as well as personal preference, can help you determine which types to buy.
Having a reliable medical thermometer at home can be incredibly helpful. The ability to accurately find out if someone has a fever gives you much-needed information about important next steps for their care.
No matter which type you choose, read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. No thermometer will provide accurate results if it’s used incorrectly.
Never use a thermometer on a person that is meant for another purpose, such as a laboratory or meat thermometer. These won’t provide accurate readings.
If you’re a parent, you may be wondering why we’re omitting forehead strip thermometers from this roundup. Strip thermometers are inexpensive and quick to use. However, since they measure skin temperature rather than body temperature, they’re significantly less accurate and should be avoided.
Digital thermometer
Digital thermometers work by using heat sensors that determine body temperature.
They can be used to take temperature readings in the mouth, rectum, or armpit.
When assessing digital thermometer readings, keep in mind that armpit (axillary) temperature runs about ½ to 1°F (0.6°C) cooler than oral readings. Rectal thermometers run ½ to 1°F (0.6°C) warmer than oral readings.
Benefits
Digital thermometers provide accurate readings in about 1 minute or less.
Drawbacks
In order to get an accurate reading from oral use, the tip of the device must be placed under the tongue with the mouth completely closed. For this reason, rectal readings are considered to be the most accurate for infants and small children. Additionally:
Oral readings won’t be accurate if they are taken too close to eating or drinking, because results may be skewed by your food or drink’s temperature. Wait at least 15 minutes.
Rectal readings may be uncomfortable to get for infants and small children.
You shouldn’t use the same thermometer for both rectal and oral readings. This may require the purchase of two thermometers, which should be labeled.
Batteries in thermometers should be replaced periodically. Make sure you have the right type of batteries on hand for your device and that you understand how to change them, so you’re not left scrambling in an emergency.
Oral thermometer
Oral temperature can be taken by either a digital or mercury thermometer. We’ll go over the benefits and drawbacks of mercury thermometers below.
The average oral temperature reading is 98.6°F (37°C). However, any oral temperature from 97°F (36.1°C) to 99°F (37.2°C) is considered typical. Some people run naturally cool, and others slightly warmer. It’s a good idea to know what your temperature typically is so you can assess whether you’re running a fever when you feel sick.
Benefits
Oral thermometers are most accurate in children over 3 and in adults.
Drawbacks
Small children and people with breathing issues may not be able to keep their mouths closed long enough to acquire an accurate reading.
Digital ear (tympanic) thermometer
Tympanic thermometers measure the temperature inside the ear canal through infrared ray technology.
Tympanic readings are 0.5°F (0.3°C) to 1°F (0.6°C) higher than oral temperature readings.
Benefits
Tympanic thermometers provide fast and accurate readings and may be preferable to oral or rectal thermometers, especially in children.
Drawbacks
Due to the size of the ear canal, tympanic thermometers aren’t recommended for infants under 6 months old.
They must be positioned properly in order to get accurate results.
Obstructions like earwax may skew results.
They may not fit properly in a small or curved ear canal.
Forehead (temporal) thermometer
Forehead thermometers use infrared sensors to measure the temperature of the superficial temporal artery, which is a branch of the carotid artery.
Some are known as non-contact infrared thermometers.
Forehead thermometers that require no physical contact have become very popular for use in venues such as airports, stores, and stadiums.
Forehead temperature readings run around 1°F (0.6°C) cooler than oral temperature readings.
Benefits
Temporal thermometers provide quick readings, within several seconds.
They are easily administered and can be used on infants, children, and adults.
Some research indicates that temporal thermometers may be as accurate as rectal thermometers in children, and provide better readings than ear or armpit thermometers can. However, these findings aren’t conclusive and have been disputed in other studies .
Drawbacks
Forehead thermometers must be positioned accurately and according to the manufacturer’s instructions, or they will not provide the right reading.
Readings can be affected by external factors, including drafts, wind, indoor heating, and direct sunlight.
Wearing certain clothing, such as hats or heavy coats, can skew the results.
App-based thermometer
Most free phone apps designed to take temperature readings are meant for recording the temperature of environments, not people.
Phone apps that help with taking people’s temperatures rely on digital thermometers that link back to the app via Bluetooth connection.
Benefits
Temperatures can be taken orally, rectally, or under the arm.
They provide readings within 8 to 10 seconds.
Some apps let you upload your anonymous temperature readings to a health and weather map, which can help make local authorities aware of illness spikes in your geographic area.
Some apps provide suggestions for medical next steps, based on the reading.
Most apps provide you with the ability to keep a log of multiple people’s temperatures.
Drawbacks
Not every app or thermometer that connects to an app is reliable. Some manufacturers have better track records than others.
App-based thermometers may be significantly more expensive than digital thermometers without Bluetooth connectivity.
Pacifier thermometer
If your baby uses a pacifier, this may be an easy way for you to record their approximate temperature.
Benefits
Ease of use is the biggest benefit of pacifier thermometers.
Drawbacks
Pacifier thermometers must remain in the mouth, without moving, for up to 6 minutes. Additionally, they provide an approximation of temperature rather than an exact reading.
Mercury (liquid in glass) thermometer
Mercury thermometers were once the only option available for taking temperature.
Due to safety concerns, they’re no longer widely available and may even be illegal where you live.
Benefits
Mercury thermometers provide accurate temperature readings and can be used orally, rectally, or under the arm.
They don’t require batteries.
Drawbacks
Thermometers: Understand the options
Thermometers: Understand the options Thermometers come in a variety of styles. Understand the different types of thermometers and how to pick the right thermometer for you. By Mayo Clinic Staff
Choosing the thermometer that’s best for your family can be confusing. Here’s what you need to know about the most common thermometers.
Types of thermometers
In general, there are two types of thermometers. Touch, or contact, thermometers must touch the body in order to measure temperature. Remote, or no contact, thermometers can measure body temperature without touching the skin.
Contact thermometers
The most common kind of contact thermometer uses electronic heat sensors to record body temperature. These thermometers can be used on the forehead, mouth, armpit or rectum. Most electronic thermometers have a digital display that shows you the temperature reading.
Rectal temperatures provide the most-accurate readings for infants, especially those 3 months or younger, as well as children up to age 3. Temperatures taken from the armpit are usually the least accurate. For older children and adults, oral readings are usually accurate — as long as the mouth is closed while the thermometer is in place.
The pros:
Most electronic contact thermometers can record temperatures from the forehead, mouth, armpit or rectum — often in less than one minute.
An electronic contact thermometer is appropriate for newborns, infants, children and adults.
The cons:
Parents may worry about causing discomfort when taking a child’s temperature rectally.
You need to wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking to take an oral temperature. Otherwise, the temperature of your food or drink might affect the thermometer reading.
It can be difficult for children — or anyone who breathes through the mouth — to keep their mouths closed long enough to get an accurate oral reading.
If you plan to use an electronic contact thermometer to take both oral and rectal temperatures, get two thermometers and label one for oral use and one for rectal use. Don’t use the same thermometer in both places.
Remote thermometers
Many schools, businesses and health care settings are screening visitors for fever. A remote thermometer that doesn’t require skin contact allows people to remain further apart. Remote thermometers can be used on the forehead (temporal artery) or the ear (tympanic).
Temporal artery thermometers
Remote forehead thermometers use an infrared scanner to measure the temperature of the temporal artery in the forehead.
The pros:
A remote temporal artery thermometer can record a person’s temperature quickly and are easily tolerated.
Remote temporal artery thermometers are appropriate for children of any age.
The cons:
A temporal artery thermometer may be more expensive than other types of thermometers.
This type of thermometer may be less accurate than other types. Direct sunlight, cold temperatures or a sweaty forehead can affect temperature readings. Variations on user technique, such as holding the scanner too far away from the forehead, also may affect accuracy.
Tympanic thermometers
Remote ear thermometers, also called tympanic thermometers, use an infrared ray to measure the temperature inside the ear canal.
The pros:
When positioned properly, infrared ear thermometers are quick and generally comfortable for children and adults.
Infrared ear thermometers are appropriate for infants older than age 6 months, older children and adults.
The cons:
Infrared ear thermometers aren’t recommended for newborns.
Earwax or a small, curved ear canal can interfere with the accuracy of a temperature taken with an infrared ear thermometer.
Mercury thermometers
Once a staple in most medicine cabinets, mercury thermometers use mercury encased in glass to measure body temperature. Mercury thermometers are no longer recommended because they can break and allow mercury — which is toxic — to escape.
If you have a mercury thermometer, don’t throw it in the trash. Contact your local trash collection program to see if there’s a hazardous waste collection site in your area.
