Across Cultures: Greetings

David Unze

[email protected]

Editor’s note: The St. Cloud Times is working to enlighten the debate about refugees and immigrants who make their homes in this community. We are asking readers to submit their questions, and we will answer them in a series of stories over the next several months.

Q: What is a proper greeting in Somali culture?

A: The most common way that Somalis greet each other is by saying “As-salamu alaykum,” which means “Peace and blessing be upon you.” The phonetic pronunciation is “ah-salam-ooh all-eye-koom.”

Men can shake hands when greeting one another, but Somalis of the opposite sex typically don’t shake hands when greeting one another, said Ahmed Abdi.

He is a bilingual communication support specialist at St. Cloud Tech High School and a board member at the Central Minnesota Islamic Center. His role at Tech, in part, is to help students and faculty understand cultural differences, such as greetings.

If a non-Somali wants to greet a Somali of the same sex, men typically can shake hands and women can greet each other and tap their chest with an open right hand when saying the greeting, Abdi said.

If the Somali woman is comfortable shaking hands, she will extend her hand. It’s not polite in Somali culture for someone to extend their hand to a female during a greeting.
