One million seconds last 16,666 minutes, or 277 hours, or rather 11.5 days.
To get to a billion, we multiply by a thousand: one billion seconds last 11,574 days, hence more than 31 years!

One billion grains of rice
There are about 40,000 grains of rice in 1 kilo of rice (depending on the grains in question, this is a mere approximation). One million grains of rice represents about 25 kg of rice.
To get to a billion, we multiply by a thousand: a billion grains of rice weighs 25,000 kg of rice, or 25 tons, for a volume of 30 m3.

Now that it’s summer, lots of people are thinking about going to the beach. So our fan Sophia Y. asked, how many sand particles would it take to cover a person? First, there’s a grown-up formula to figure out how much area your skin covers! (you multiply your weight and height by other numbers, to start). We tried it for a regular-sized 6-year-old (50 pounds, 42 inches tall), and got 8 ½ square feet of skin area. A medium-sized grown-up woman has about 18 square feet, and a man has more than 20 sq ft. Each grain is 1/1,000th of a foot wide, so it takes 1,000 x 1,000 or about 1 million grains of sand to cover just 1 square foot. That’s just a thin layer of single grains…if you want a few inches of sand, you need hundreds of layers, giving us over a billion grains for a grown-up! Luckily the beach has plenty of sand for the job.
Wee ones: If your body has 7 square feet of skin and your friend has 5 square feet, who needs more sand to be totally covered?
Little kids: If your whole body has 8 square feet of skin, and each arm takes up 1 square foot of that and each leg takes up 2 square feet, what does that leave for your torso (the part in the middle)? Bonus: How much more area would you need to reach 10 square feet?
Big kids: If you dig out 20 cubic feet of sand (imagine perfect cubes 1 foot wide), then shovel 8 cubic feet back into the hole, then dig out 4 cubic feet, then dump 1 cubic foot back in…how many cubic feet have you dug out in total? Bonus: If you now make the hole twice as wide and twice as long (with same depth), how much sand have you dug out in total? (Hint if needed: What if you made it just twice as wide?)
The sky’s the limit: If you’re covering a teenager with 16 square feet of skin total 3 inches deep in sand, how many billions of grains do you need — and how do you write that in digits? (Remember, the area facing up is just half of that, and you need 1 billion grains for each cubic foot (12 inches deep)).

Little kids: 2 square feet, since your arms and legs take up 6. Bonus: 2 more square feet.
Big kids: 15 cubic feet. Bonus: 60 cubic feet. It would be just 30 cubic feet if you doubled in only one direction.

Perhaps you’ve heard this before: There are more stars in the universe than all the grains of sand in all the beaches, desserts and sandboxes on Earth.
There are a lot of sand grains on Earth. Sand constitutes a major fraction of the makeup of Earth.
Scientists estimate the number by measuring the average size of a sand grains, then calculating how many sand grains it would take to fill, say, a gallon jug. Using the latest geological studies, they calculate the total volume of sand on Earth. Scientists estimate that Earth contains 7.5 sextillion sand grains. That is 75 followed by 17 zeros. That’s a lot of sand.
Astronomers calculate the total number of stars in the universe by studying nearby galaxies, ones in which we can count the stars, to see how many it takes to make a galaxy shine. Then, based on detailed counts of galaxies we can see, and making conservative estimates of how many we can’t see, they estimate the total number of stars in the universe. Our universe contains at least 70 septillion stars, 7 followed by 23 zeros.

February highlights: On the Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m., an hour and a half after sunset, the moon will be one moon diameter south of one of the brightest star clusters in our night sky, the Beehive cluster. The nearly full moon will make the Beehive cluster difficult to see with your eyes alone but will make a great sight in a pair of binoculars or that telescope you got for Christmas.
While you have your binoculars or telescope out, look to the west-southwest and find Mars. It will be one of the brightest objects in the night sky. With your binoculars or telescope, look for Uranus straight below Mars. With your telescope, you’ll see it as a tiny, greenish ball.
Look due south, halfway between the Moon and Mars and a bit below the line connecting the two, to find Orion. It has a distinctive hourglass shape and is the brightest constellation visible from Oklahoma.
Planet visibility report: Both Mercury and Venus are up at sunset in the early month, but Mercury is quite close to the sun and is totally overwhelmed by its brightness. The innermost planet moves farther from the sun all month. You may just catch it after sunset if you have a very clear view of the western horizon by month’s end. Jupiter and Venus, the two brightest celestial objects after the sun and the Moon, both rise about two and a half hours before the sun early in the month. Saturn rises an hour before the sun, but it will be difficult in the morning twilight.
By the end of February, Mars is closer to the sun in the evening twilight and Mercury is a bit farther from the sun. All three morning planets should be easily visible before sunset, barring any clouds. New moon occurs on the Feb. 4 with full Moon following on the Feb. 19.
