Protected – 1 Samuel 25:14-17, 32-38
Today you kept me from participating in bloodshed and avenging myself by my own hand (1 Sam. 25:33b).
It is a rare inherited condition—about one in a million people are affected—but it is a parent’s nightmare. The condition is called “congenital insensitivity to pain” (CIP). The name says it all: a person is born with the inability to feel physical pain. Loving parents do everything they can to protect their young children from external harm. But parents of children with CIP have an added burden. They must try to protect their children from unknowingly hurting themselves.
Children born with CIP feel no pain when they chew their tongues, cut themselves, or twist an ankle. They can unwittingly touch a scalding-hot object and not realize they are being badly burned. They often need their parents to keep them from hurting themselves.[1]
Have you ever felt that God protected you from hurting yourself with sin? David did.
From the time the prophet Samuel anointed young David to be Israel’s next king after Saul (1 Sam. 16:13), the Lord was with David to protect him from Saul’s jealous wrath—which was fierce! Multiple times King Saul attempted to kill David, twice by personally flinging a spear at him (18:10-11). David eventually had to go into hiding, moving from one place to another with his band of followers to stay out of reach of the king’s troops. In all of these experiences, the Lord was with David and protected him from harm (18:12; 23:13-14).
In one experience, however, David faced a different sort of danger. First Samuel 25 chronicles an event in which David became furious with a man named Nabal for refusing to supply provisions to David’s men (25:4-12). David reacted by marshaling 400 of his warriors with whom he planned to slaughter Nabal, his family, and his workers (25:14-17). As David later admitted, only the Lord’s providential help kept him from committing a heinous act of bloodshed (25:32-33). The Lord not only kept David from killing innocent people, He also protected David from disqualifying himself as king.
In this intriguing chapter in David’s life, we can see three ways God protected David from himself. Perhaps God has worked similarly in your life to keep you from sin.
First, God sent an unexpected “protector” into David’s path. Nabal’s wife was named Abigail. When she heard from a servant how her husband had shamefully treated David and his men, she immediately gathered several donkey-loads of provisions and set out to intercept David with the gift (25:18-19). Encountering David and his men along the road, Abigail humbled herself before David and interceded for her family. Abigail affirmed that the Lord was involved in their meeting, keeping David from “participating in bloodshed and avenging [himself] by [his] own hand” (25:26).
As you look back on episodes of your life as a believer, can you recall times when someone intervened and helped you avoid committing sin? Perhaps the “protector” was a parent, a teacher, or a Christian friend. You might not have realized it at the time, but God was working providentially through that “protector” to keep you from harming yourself. How thankful we ought to be for that divine protection!
Second, God gave David a new way to react to insults. David and his men needed food and supplies to be sure. But Nabal’s refusal to help was also a blatant lack of hospitality. Showing hospitality was a deeply personal feature of Israelite culture. To refuse hospitality, especially to a fellow Israelite, was a severe insult. Nabal had shamed David in the eyes of his men (25:9-11). David’s immediate reaction was to make Nabal pay dearly for the insult by slaughtering not only Nabal but also the man’s entire household and workforce. Through Abigail’s brave intervention, God gave David a different way of responding to Nabal’s shameful action—the way of forgiveness (25:28).
Jesus told His followers in the Sermon on the Mount, “You are blessed when [people] insult and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me.
Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven” (Matt. 5:11-12). The apostle Peter echoed Jesus on this matter in 1 Peter 3:9: “not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you can inherit a blessing.” How ready we ought to be as Christ’s followers to choose God’s way and thus be kept from committing sinful actions that go beyond the hurt we ourselves have experienced.
Third, God reminded David that all people, whether kings or beggars and all in between, are accountable to Him for their actions. David praised God for sending Abigail to intervene before he participated in shedding innocent blood and “avenging [himself] by [his] own hand” (1 Sam. 25:33). In Deuteronomy 32:35, the Lord declares, “Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay.” The apostle Paul quoted this declaration in Romans 12:19 to urge believers to leave room for God to take whatever vengeance was needed. Only God knows all the facts of a situation. Only He is absolutely just and righteous. Believers are not to be conquered by evil but are to “conquer evil with good” (Rom. 12:21). By remembering that we all are accountable to God for our actions, such knowledge can serve as a hedge of protection—keeping us from sinful overreactions by letting God be the Righteous Judge.
Thank You, Lord, for Your protection in this fallen, dangerous world. I praise You for all the times You have protected me from hurting myself with sin. Teach me to choose Your ways in all that I say and do today.

Saul was king, but he kept disobeying God so God asked Samuel to find a new king. God said to Samuel, “Go to Bethlehem and there is a man named Jesse with eight sons. One of them will be the next king.”
Jesse brought his sons to Samuel, none of them God had chosen. Samuel asked Jesse, “Have I met all your sons?” Jesse replied, “I have one son left named David, he’s the youngest, he’s out looking after sheep. I will bring him to meet you.”
As soon as Samuel saw him the Lord spoke to him and said, “He is the one.” He was anointed with oil and from that day on the power of the Lord was with David.
David continued to take care of his father’s sheep in the fields. When he didn’t have much to do in the field he played instruments, and wrote songs and poems that you can find in the book of Psalms in your Bible.
Meanwhile Saul was still king and he ruled people called Israelites. David and his family were Israelites too. The Israelites weren’t getting along with people named the Philistines.
The Philistines had many giants living in their land. One of the strongest and biggest giants was named Goliath. He was over nine feet tall, which is taller than any person recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. He would’ve had to bend way down to get through a regular door.
Goliath was covered with armor to protect him and carried a big spear. Every morning and every evening for forty days he shouted to the Israelites in his big deep voice, “Hey, you guys! I dare you to find one man to fight me. If he can beat me we will become your servants, but if I win you will all become our servants.”
When Saul and all his men heard this they were very afraid. David’s three oldest brothers could go fight because they were old enough.
David’s father Jesse heard about the giant and was worried for his sons. He asked David to take some food to his brothers and see how there’re doing.
As David approached his brothers he heard Goliath shouting. David asked the men in the army. “Isn’t someone going to stand up to this man?” there was slience. “Then I will fight this giant Philistine.”
One of the men overheard this and ran to Saul and told him what David said. Saul approached David and said, “You can’t fight Goliath, you’re only a boy and he has been fighting for many years.” But David said to Saul, “I have had to fight lions and bears to protect my father’s sheep. God helped keep me safe then and he will help keep me safe now.”
It was too bad that Saul the king wasn’t trusting in God to help him, he didn’t know what to do to beat Goliath. But David new he could trust in God!

David approached Goliath, Goliath looked at David and thought it was a joke. Goliath thought that he could easily beat David and it was funny that Saul would send a small boy to fight him. But David said to him without fear, “You fight with a sword and I come with God on my side and today everyone will know that there is one true God in this land.”
Goliath didn’t care what David said and he moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly to meet him. Reaching into his pouch he pulled out a stone, put it into his slingshot and shot it at Goliath. The stone had hit him right between his eyes and suddenly Goliath started to lose his balance.
He fell with a loud thud right on his face. David had done it, he beat the giant Philistine! When the rest of the Philistines saw this they ran away and David became a hero to all the people in Israel.

King David was not born into royalty. He entered life as a humble shepherd, rose to found a dynasty, and became a central figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
In the Book of Samuel, Saul, the first king of Israel, failed to reach a decisive victory against an enemy tribe, the Philistines. God sent the Prophet Samuel to Bethlehem and guided him to David, a humble shepherd and talented musician. He brought the young man to Saul’s court, where his harp was so soothing that Saul called for David whenever he was vexed by an “evil spirit” sent by God (I Samuel 9:16). Saul was so taken with this young man that he appointed David his armor bearer.

Soon thereafter, a major Philistine battle loomed. This time, the Philistines fielded a fearsome new weapon: a giant named Goliath, carrying a huge bronze spear (I Samuel 17:5-7). The Israelites were frozen in fear—except young David. Armed with only a sling, he picked a stone from a riverbed and slung it at Goliath’s head. David’s aim was true; the stone struck the giant and killed him, prompting the Philistines to flee. The Israelites were jubilant. Saul was compelled to place young David at the head of his army (I Samuel 18:5).
Even though David then married Saul’s daughter Michal and became a close friend of Saul’s son Jonathan, an intense rivalry developed between the young new general and the king. Saul even began to plot to kill him. David had little choice but to flee to enemy territory.

Saul’s downfall
Soon the country was once again torn by war as Philistine forces gathered at Mount Gilboa, and Saul and his sons, all serving as commanders in his army, rushed to meet them. But God had turned against Saul, and the Israelite ranks were decimated. All of Saul’s sons fell to Philistine swords, including his heir, Jonathan. Badly wounded himself, Saul then fell upon his own sword (I Samuel 31:1-7).
With Israel’s army in headlong retreat, the Philistines swarmed over the Hebrew highlands. Saul’s only surviving son, Ishbaal, was anointed as his successor, supported by the northern tribes. But the southern elders went to Hebron, David’s military base, and in due course anointed David king “over the house of Judah.”
At first, David chose to ignore the Philistines and instead marched on Jerusalem (II Samuel 5:6). After capturing Jerusalem, David was then able to defeat the Philistines. Eventually, all of the regions in Canaan came under David’s control.
Kingdom of David
Now, at last, David could turn his attention to building a state, ruled from a proper Israelite capital. He pitched the tent of the Tabernacle to house the Ark of the Covenant. This was obviously not a satisfactory solution, and the king complained to the Prophet Nathan that “I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent” (II Samuel 7:2). An oracle from God assured David that “the Lord will make you a house”—a Davidic dynasty—but that it would be up to his offspring (King Solomon) to “build a house for my name” (II Samuel 7:11-13).
So David reigned over all Israel; and he administered justice and equity to all his people.
According to the Books of Samuel and the subsequent Books of Kings, David then expanded his territory until Israel had become the dominant state in the Levant, absorbing the nations of Ammon, Moab, and Edom. Modern research has questioned this claim, and many scholars believe that some of the legendary material surrounding David served to exalt him as an ideal king, as successful in peace as in war, beloved by God as well as his people.
Indeed, David’s greatest achievement (and that of his son Solomon) is not the extent of their putative realm, but the fusion of the quarrelsome tribes into one nation. Some scholars have even questioned whether David is a historical figure, though the discovery of a stela from Tel Dan with the inscription bytdwd (which may mean “House of David”) would argue otherwise.
Notwithstanding David’s political achievements, his personal life was filled with conflict and tragedy. David compromised his reputation by pursuing the beautiful Bathsheba, who was already married to Uriah, one of David’s top commanders. David ordered him placed in the front ranks of a planned assault against the Ammonites, where he was duly killed.
As soon as Bathsheba finished her time of mourning, David married her, and she bore his son. But the Prophet Nathan sternly rebuked David for his evil scheming because it had “displeased the Lord,” and indeed, the baby died (II Samuel 11:27). David then repented before God, and in return was promised that Bathsheba would bear him a second son. His name was Solomon. As David grew older and feeble, Bathsheba extracted David’s promise that their son Solomon would succeed him. And so it came to pass.
