Sasebo slashing

For the 2014 murder, see Sasebo schoolgirl murder

2004 Japanese murder

The “Sasebo slashing” (Japanese: 佐世保小6女児同級生殺害事件, Hepburn: Sasebo shōroku joji dōkyūsei satsugai jiken),[1] also known as the Nevada-tan murder, was the murder of a 12-year-old Japanese schoolgirl, Satomi Mitarai (御手洗 怜美, Mitarai Satomi), by an 11-year-old female classmate referred to as “Girl A”.[2] The murder occurred on June 1, 2004, at an elementary school in the city of Sasebo in Nagasaki Prefecture. The murderer slit Mitarai’s throat and arms with a box cutter.[3]

Reactions to the incident included Internet memes and a discussion of lowering the age of criminal responsibility in Japan. The killer’s name has not been released to the press (but it was accidentally revealed), as per Japanese legal procedures prohibiting the identification of juvenile offenders;[4] “Girl A” is a common pseudonym used for juvenile girls involved in criminal cases in Japan. The Nagasaki District Legal Affairs Bureau cautioned Internet users against revealing her photos.[5] However, the girl’s name was accidentally revealed on a Fuji TV broadcast, and members of Japanese Internet community 2channel publicized her identity on June 18, 2004, based on analysis of a picture broadcast on television.[6][7]

Murder [ edit ]

Okubo Elementary School where the incident took place (pictured on March 11, 2011)

On June 1, 2004, an 11-year-old schoolgirl, later dubbed “Girl A”, murdered her 12-year-old classmate, Satomi Mitarai, in an empty classroom during the lunch hour at Okubo Elementary School in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture.[8] Girl A returned to her classroom, her clothes covered in blood.[9] The girls’ teacher, who had noticed that both girls were missing, stumbled upon the body and called the police.[10]

After being taken into custody, Girl A was reported to have confessed to the crime, saying “I am sorry, I am sorry” to police.[11] She spent the night at the police station, often crying, and refused to eat. Girl A initially mentioned no motive for the killing.[12] Shortly afterward, she confessed to police that she and Mitarai had quarreled as a result of messages left on the Internet.[13] Girl A claimed that Mitarai slandered her[14] by commenting on her weight and calling her a “goody-goody”.

On September 15, 2004, a Japanese Family Court ruled to institutionalize Girl A, putting aside her young age because of the severity of the crime.[15] She was sent to a reformatory in Tochigi Prefecture.[16] The Nagasaki family court originally sentenced Girl A to two years of involuntary commitment, but the sentence was extended by two years in September 2006, following a psychological evaluation.[17] On May 29, 2008, local authorities announced that they did not seek an additional sentence.[18]

A reformatory in Tochigi Prefecture where “Girl A” was institutionalized

Because of issues with communication ability and obsessive interests, Girl A was diagnosed after the murder with Asperger syndrome.[19]

Reaction [ edit ]

The killing provoked a debate in Japan whether the age of criminal responsibility, lowered from 16 to 14 in 2000 due to the 1997 Kobe child murders, needed to be lowered again.[20] Girl A was considered to be a normal and well-adjusted child before the incident,[21] which made the public more anxious.[22]

Members of the Japanese Diet, such as Kiichi Inoue and Sadakazu Tanigaki, came under criticism for comments made in the wake of the killing.[23] Inoue was criticized for referring to Girl A as genki (vigorous, lively), a word with positive connotations.[24] Tanigaki was criticized for referring to the method of killing, slitting of the throat, as a “manly” act.[25]

Girl A became the subject of an Internet meme on Japanese web communities such as 2channel. She was nicknamed “Nevada-tan” because a class photograph showed a girl believed to be her wearing a University of Nevada, Reno sweatshirt,[26] “-tan” being a childlike pronunciation of the Japanese honorific suffix “-chan,” generally used to refer to young girls.

Akio Mori cited this case in support of his controversial “game brain” theory,[27] which has been criticized as being nothing more than superstition.[28] Girl A was reported to be a fan of the death-themed flash animation “Red Room”,[29] a claim used in support of the theory. It was also known that Girl A had read the controversial novel Battle Royale and had seen its film adaptation, which centers on young students fighting to the death.[30]

At the March 18, 2005 Okubo Elementary graduation, students were given a graduation album with a blank page in honor of Mitarai’s death on which they could put pictures of Mitarai, Girl A, or class pictures containing both girls.[31] Mitarai was posthumously awarded a graduation certificate, which her father accepted on her behalf. Girl A was also awarded a certificate, as one is required in Japan in order to enter junior high school and the school believed it would aid her “reintegration into society”.[32]

Self confessed Teen Wolf Fanatic — Satomi Ito, and her journey from Beta to Pack…

We first meet Satomi in 3×21, The fox and the wolf, at Oak Creek; and she first appears as a strict and silent-type of woman; we learnt that at that time, she spent her days playing the game GO, in order to help her control her anger.. so we know she had issues with her anger back then, just like many a bitten werewolf apparently does.

And we also know that Satomi has been living in and/or around Beacon Hills for some time. In those (roughly, I think) sixty-nine years since Oak Creek, she’s become an alpha (and I imagine that she did indeed kill an Alpha to become one) and has also apparently built and maintained a substantial pack of her own.

We also know from 4×07, Weaponized, that Satomi used to visit Talia Hale and bring her reishi tea, which Derek thought smelled terrible; and so when the rest of her pack got sick, she didn’t because of her tea ritual.

Now, here is the interesting thing about Satomi… she is incredibly fast, like seriously fast for one old lady Alpha Werewolf, and she is able to dodge bullets Matrix-style, which is awesome. But, that also brings me to that actual points for this post.

I’ve been thinking about the sizable number of werewolves that she has in her pack. A sizeable number (I counted 10) were killed by The Chemist; discovered in the woods by Malia and Derek in 4×06 Orphaned. And then in Deaton’s practise, there are a sizeable number still left alive, (I don’t have a picture, but I think there was at least 8 wolves or so).

We also learn from Satomi that she taught her people control, and along with Derek discussing in the latest episode about how Satomi’s people aren’t really fighters and with how we know she was sort of famous as one of the oldest werewolves; what if she was known for teaching control to Werewolves who need it, too?

Note: Liam and Scott. Whilst Liam shows remarkable sudden control, Scott had a lapsing moment. Perhaps Satomi may factor in down the line?

I have this little headcannon of mine, in which different Werewolf packs across North America know of Satomi, and when they have a pack mate who just can’t seem to find their anchor and can’t get control over their wolves at all, they send them to Satomi, who teaches them the mantra control, ‘The Sun, The Moon, The Truth’ ect ect… I can see some of those she teaches wanting to stay on with her.

Because honestly, I really can’t see her giving the Bite to so many different Wolves; but it also brings me onto Brett and the girl, Lori; young beta Werewolves, we know Brett is well off, he goes to prep school, and seems to have excellent control over himself.. so what if Brett’s parents were bitten (or born and took on by Satomi) and so Brett could have been born, and raised as Satomi being his Alpha?

But yeah; judging from this, I think a lot of the Werewolves Satomi has in her pack are wolves she may have taken on at some point or another

Also.. another note: Satomi mentioned how she knew who Scott was. Satomi knew about Scott, she knew about this young boy turned True Alpha, yet she remained silent, and didn’t step forward to help him previously; I wonder if, in a way, she was testing him, feeling him out, seeing what type of Alpha Scott would be?

Lily Mariye as Satomi Ito -Werewolf-

Satomi Ito is an Alpha werewolf, the leader of a Pack, over 100 years old, an old friend of Noshiko Yukimura and Talia Hale, and was Bitten. In 1943, during WWII, Satomi was amongst Japanese-Americans, along with Noshiko Yukimura, interned at Camp Oak Creek. Satomi could be seen regularly playing the game of Go. When it was uncovered that the corrupt army medics were selling medical products on the black market during an epidemic of influenza, a riot between the interns and the officers broke out. Satomi was decked by a soldier during the chaos, but Noshiko saw her injury heal and her eyes glow revealing Satomi’s status as a Bitten werewolf. She’d had “monthly migraines” and the game Go worked as an anchor for her humanity. Unfortunately, Satomi in her vicious, rabid state threw a Molotov cocktail that had been brewed for the riot and she set Corporal Rhys aflame. When the interns were relocated to Eichen House institution and the Nogitsune had brought his chaos to the institution resulting in a bloodbath, Satomi had survived and helped Noshiko defeat the Dark Kitsune.

In “Orphaned”, it is revealed that over the years Satomi had become an Alpha of a Pack: werewolves targeted by assassins in Beacon Hills, DeMarco Montana, Carrie Hudson and Brett Talbot were all Betas of this Pack. Satomi had risen to her status by adhering to the percepts of Buddhism; several of her Pack members utilized the mantra “Three things that cannot be long hidden. The sun, the moon, the truth” as an anchor for their animal nature. Derek and Malia track down Satomi’s Pack to warn them of the Dead Pool, but they find multiple members of the Pack slaughtered. Satomi appears in “Weaponized” arriving at Deaton’s animal clinic with Reed, a Pack member of hers who was sick from what killed the others, eventually dying, to Satomi’s sorrow. Satomi’s Pack were all infected with a virus, a variant of Canine distemper designed for werewolves. Satomi meets Derek, realizing how much he reminds her of Talia. Satomi knew Talia, she’d occasionally visited her before the fire. Derek tells her he remembers because of the tea they drank during such occasions which he found smelled awful. Deaton figures out Satomi wasn’t infected with the virus because she has been inoculated from the tea recipe, from Reishi mushrooms, a powerful anecdotal. An assassin shows up and opens fire on Derek and Satomi, but Satomi dodges the bullets and kills the assassin. In “Monstrous”, hunters-turned-assassins have swarmed into the area, and Satomi’s Pack now totals only eight members, herself included. She and her Pack regroup at the Animal Clinic after Kira saves Brett and Lori, the youngest Betas from the hunters. Kira introduces Satomi to Scott. They bring the Pack to the abandoned Argent Arms International warehouse and rally Chris, Braeden and Derek. Satomi is wary of Chris at first, but Scott tells Satomi he trusts Chris. Chris remembers Satomi from a meeting in the past, he asks her what her mantra means to her. She responds it means the truth that werewolves are inherently violent creatures cannot “remain hidden”. The assassins arrive, and the group is able to fight them off, until the Dead Pool to be shut down, terminating all the Benefactor’s contracts with no casualties.

Satomi is well known amongst werewolf Packs because she is one of the oldest wolves alive; she is physically identical to how she appeared back in 1943 indicating a trait of long life, and was Bitten. Satomi is wise, progressive, and protective of her Pack willing to kill if it means saving them from harm. As an Alpha werewolf, Satomi has immense supernatural agility, able to evade gunfire at point-blank rage and wields an emei blade as a weapon. She is successful as a leader for her Pack, having taught her Pack members control as well as the talent to mask their scent.
