ESPN analyst’s tweet about tattoos sparks argument

Andrew Joseph

While ESPN’s Jay Bilas is a staunch critic of the NCAA’s rules on amateurism, his colleague, Dan Dakich, is the opposite.

Dakich, who also hosts a radio show in Indianapolis, has spent years arguing that a free education is sufficient compensation while the NCAA and schools generate billions off student-athletes’ likeness and performance.

On Sunday, Dakich suggested that college athletes couldn’t be “broke” because they can afford tattoos. He included a photo of former Kentucky basketball player Derek Willis.

Willis responded to the tweet after randomly being called out to serve as a prop for Dakich’s argument. He explained that he used financial aid money to buy tattoos.

Then, Dakich brought up Willis’ 2016 public intoxication arrest to applaud the NCAA system and Willis’ coaches for giving him a second chance.

At this point, Willis responded appropriately for a Twitter argument that he wanted no part of to begin with.

Kentucky has averaged $23.8 million in men’s basketball revenue in each of the past three years.

Seriously, how many of your peers who you went to college with didn’t have a lot of cash at all times and were what you would describe a “poor college kid” who could use a job? How many of those had received a gift from their parents or bought something for themselves at some point in their life that cost as much and was as non-essential as a tattoo?

Having bought a $300 luxury item at one point in your life doesn’t mean that you are being sufficiently compensated. A little bit confused as to why you think it does. A lot of people are of the belief that somebody putting in 30+ hours of work per week in addition to being a full-time student while being an extremely valuable contributor to a lucrative enterprise should be able to afford a tattoo and not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

Today’s question:

We have been watching the NCAA basketball tournament and noticed many of the players have arms, etc. covered with tattoos. What does it cost to cover one’s arm with all those tattoos? We think it must cost a small fortune for these college players.

I think the real question here is why athletes get so many tattoos in the first place.

I suppose the college players do to emulate the pros, but why anyone would want to get all inked up like that I don’t understand.

But then I suppose it’s none of my business. I do not, as they say, have any skin in the game.

It appears most tattoo artists charge by the hour. I am told you probably can get something small, a rose on your ankle for instance, for $40 or $60 or so.

As you know, there is a web site now for pretty much anything, which is why I was able to learn from howmuchdotattoscost.com.

There I learned the rate is generally between $50 and $100 an hour.

So a big elaborate design is going to set you back some.

Some artists charge by the project and not the hour.

The site also listed prices at about 20 tattoo parlors around the country that seemed to range from $100 an hour to $250.

Top artists in New York City charge even more.

I think you can get a tattoo in prison for a few packs of cigarettes.

How college athletes afford these decorations, what with taking Mary Sue to Pop’s Malt Shop after the pep rally and all their other expenses, I don’t know.

Again, it’s none of my business.
