The Smell Of Dancers
You guys, we have to talk. While ballroom dancers are really really really ridiculously good looking, we can smell like a high school boys’ locker room. In other words, not good.

While the regular person knows about good hygiene, then dancers should know about “hy-per-giene”, a super sense of hygiene that takes into account the very close proximity to other people, the possibility of being judged (both literally judged in relation to other people and figuratively judged in a sideline-talk way), and maintaining your own wellness.
Should you worry about smelling like a delicate flower mid-dance? NO.
Should you worry about knocking someone over when you have three hours until your next performance? Maybe.
Here’s some helpful hints for keeping the olfactory senses of your friends and neighbors and judges happy:
In Your Dance Bag
Throw a travel pack of baby wipes (for quick “showers”), deodorant, a towel, and something sprayable that smells good (use it often, but not TOO MUCH).
At Social Dance Events
Besides the possibly obvious advice to “put deodorant on and brush your teeth”, bringing a change of shirts or at least a towel is helpful. Ladies, it’s not a terrible idea to wear a shirt with sleeves if you’re above the range of “glowing” after a few spins around the floor (this coming from a lady who is dripping sweat after 10 minutes of dancing and who leads often).
At A Competition
Put deodorant on and brush your teeth.
Don’t get changed until you’re ready to dance. If your heat is in three hours, putting on your official dance ensemble is going to set off your stress hormones which will tire you out before you have to dance AND start a stressing-inducing domino effect with your teammates. Keep your costume unwrinkled and fresh by changing into it just before you hit the on-deck area and taking it off as soon as you can after awards. Got a couple hours off? Change out of your clothes! That snazzy warm-up jacket you bought isn’t just a status symbol, it’s there to keep your body covered when you want to peel off your sweaty Latin shirt.
Just between rounds? Guys, take off your Smooth/Standard jacket and throw it over a chair. Peel that Latin shirt off (and let it hang around your waist). Ladies, find a fan and stand in front of it. Head outside if it’s cooler. Pat yourself down with a towel.
After The Comp
Dear God, clean your costumes. You can only air out those babies so much. Dressmakers can and will refurbish your costume, drycleaners do all right for most dance clothes, and there’s always a tub of water and Woolite.

Even if you don’t think this could be about you, please assume that it is, to be on the safe side. Smell is sometimes the reason that people decline dances with others.
I’ve received complaints about people wearing heavy scents/perfumes/cologne at our weekly lesson & social nights. Here are some tips and best practices that you may not have thought of regarding how to smell good but not TOO good while dancing:
Fresh is best. Clean smelling is far better than covering up smells with perfumes. If you don’t have time to shower before you dance, use a wet cloth and soap to clean under arms and other smell-trapping areas of your body. Use a “fresh” deodorant. Avoid perfumed deodorants (e.g. flowers, spice, vanilla, musk) and opt for fresh scents instead (e.g. unscented, aloe vera, cucumber, ocean surf). Avoid layering scents. Layering scents in various personal products (soap/body wash, deodorant, lotion, hairspray, after-shave, perfume/cologne…) creates heaviness and competition in smells. Choose ONE product with a scent and keep the others unscented. Apply perfume/cologne sparingly. A great way of getting “just enough” scent on you is to spritz your perfume or cologne 2-3 times in the air in front of you (in the privacy of your home, not in a public place), then walk into the mist. This is instead of spraying it directly onto you. Another trick is to dab it on your neck and wrists only. Do not use spray scents (including spray deodorant) in public places. Airborne scents cause all kinds of problems for people with allergies. Also, no one likes to walk into someone else’s cloud of perfume. Apply scents to your body/skin, not to clothing. This keeps your scent close to you and is less likely to transfer to a partner. Avoid “heavy” perfumes and colognes. For example, use eau du toilette instead of a full perfume. Again, choose fresh scents over heavy floral, spice, food, or musk scents. Wash your hands to remove any scents from body parts that directly touch dance partners.
The above is also good advice for wearing scents in the workplace and on dates.
For partner dancing, my best advice is: DO NOT WEAR ANY PERFUME, COLOGNE, EAU DE TOILETTE, SCENTED LOTION, STRONGLY SCENTED HAIR PRODUCTS, and SPRAY-ON DEODORANT when dancing. Use soap/cleanser/fresh wipes and stick deodorant only.

If a ballerina were to describe the scent of the ballet, what would it be?
To celebrate the launch of their new fragrance, Iris Prima, English perfume house Penhaligon’s asked the dancers at the English National Ballet just that – and then put it into one lovely little film.
Behind the curtains there’s an all together less romantic perfume say the dancers – though, it’s still not without its passion, pain, jealousy, competition and tears: “there’s a lot of human toil and strain that goes into ballet and so there are all the smells that go with that.”

Over in the dressing rooms you’ll find the scent of dancer’s perfume, hairspray blended with old ‘woody’ make-up, musty costumes and the distinct smell of steamers used to take out creases from the dresses.
Strong notes of Tiger Balm and Deep Heat used to soothe dancer’s bodies are blended in.
In rehearsals the heat of the lights, and the lino warming up beneath them, mixes with top notes of dust and old theatres.
But underneath the salty smell is clearly a scent of passion, and it’s beautiful.
