Can I Pray If I Am Spotting After My Period?

Praise be to Allah.

When does a period end?

When a woman menstruates, her period is over when the blood stops, regardless of whether the blood was a lot or a little. Many jurists stated that the shortest length of a woman’s period is a day and a night, and the longest is fifteen days.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said there was no minimum or maximum for it ; when the bleeding is present with its distinct qualities, this is menstruation, whether it is a little or a lot. He said:

“Menstruation (al-hayd): Allah has attached numerous rulings to it in the Quran and Sunnah, but He did not state the shortest or longest length (of a menstrual period), or the length of the period of taharah between two menstrual periods, even though the need to know that exists.”

Then he said:

“Some of the scholars defined a maximum and minimum, but they differed concerning that, and some stated a maximum length without defining a minimum. The third view is most correct, which states that there is no minimum or maximum.” (Majmu’ al-Fatawa, 19/237)

What is istihadah?

There is a kind of bleeding which is called “al-istihadah ”, [irregular, non-menstrual vaginal bleeding] which is different from menstrual bleeding. It is governed by rulings which differ from those governing menstruation.

Difference between istihadah and menstruation

This blood (istihadah) may be distinguished from the blood of menstruation by the following:

Colour: menstrual blood is black [dark red] whilst the blood of istihadah is red. Consistency: menstrual blood is thick and heavy, whilst the blood of istihadah is thin. Smell: menstrual blood has an offensive odour whilst the blood of istihadah does not, because it comes from an ordinary vein. Clotting: menstrual blood does not clot when it comes out of the body whilst the blood of istihadah does clot because it comes from a vein.

These are the characteristics of menstrual blood, so if this description fits the blood that is coming out, it is hayd (menstruation); ghusl is wajib (obligatory) and this blood is najis (impure), but ghusl is not required in the case of istihadah.

When a woman has her period, she is not allowed to pray, but when the bleeding is istihadah, that is not the case. But she has to be careful and has to do wudu for each prayer if the flow of blood continues to the next prayer. If blood comes out whilst she is praying, it does not matter.

How to know your period is over

A woman can know that her period has ended by two things:

The white discharge which comes from the womb to show that the period is over.

Complete dryness, if a woman does not have this white discharge. In this case she can find out if her period has ended by inserting a piece of white cotton or something similar into the place where the blood comes from; if it comes out clean, then her period is over and she has to do ghusl and pray. If the cloth comes out red, yellow or brown, she should not pray.

The women used to send small containers in which were these cloths with traces of yellow on them to ‘Aishah, and she would say, “Do not hasten until you see the white discharge.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari mu’allaqan. Kitab al-Hayd, Bab iqbal al-mahid wa idbarihi. Also by Malik, 130).

Does brown blood mean your period is over?

But if there is a yellow or brownish discharge when a woman does not have her period, this does not mean anything and she should not stop praying or do ghusl because of it, because it does not necessitate ghusl or cause janabah (impurity).

Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “We did not bother about any yellow or brownish discharge after a woman’s period was over .” (Narrated by Abu Dawud, 307. It was also narrated by al-Bukhari, 320, but he did not mention “after a woman’s period was over.”)

“We did not bother about” means we did not think it was menstruation, but it is a najis (impure) discharge which means that a woman has to wash it away and do wudu. But if the white discharge is immediately followed by a period, then it is part of the period.

Can you pray if you are spotting after a period?

If a woman believes that her period has ended, then she starts bleeding again, if the blood has the characteristics of menstrual blood as described above, then this is menstrual bleeding , otherwise it is istihadah.

If it is the former, she should not pray. If it is the latter, she should be careful and do wudu for each prayer, then pray.

Concerning the brownish discharge , if she sees this after her period has ended, then the ruling is that it is tahir (pure), but it requires her to do wudu only. But if she sees it during the time of her period, then it comes under the rulings of menstruation.

And Allah knows best.

How Do You Know When Your Period Is Over?

When you are keeping track of your period on the calendar, you want to note the first day that you see blood and the last. At the beginning and the end, your period could look more like discolored discharge ranging from pink to brown than the very red blood that you see on the heavier days of bleeding. Mark your first day on the day you see this color change and the last day according to this same description. For example: day one (light pink spotting), days two through five (red bleeding), day six (light brown discharge), day seven (clear-whitish discharge). Mark days one through six on the calendar as period days. On the days in between your periods, it is common to have a clear, milky to light yellow discharge that varies in consistency and amount. Keep in mind that when you are counting, day one of your cycle is the first day of your period.

Islamic ritual purification

Ghusl (Arabic: غسل ġusl, IPA: [ˈɣʊsl]) is an Arabic term to the full-body ritual purification mandatory before the performance of various rituals and prayers, for any adult Muslim after having ejaculation[1][2] or completion of the menstrual cycle.

The washing is also recommended (i.e. it is mustahabb) before Jumu’ah[3] and Eid[4] prayers, before entering the ihram in preparation for Hajj, after having lost consciousness and after formally converting. Sunni Muslims also perform the ablution before Namaz-e-tawbah (Prayer of Repentance).

Ghusl is often translated as “full ablution”, as opposed to the “partial ablution” of wudu وضوء that Muslims perform after lesser impurities such as urination, defecation, flatulence, deep sleep, and light bleeding.

It is a ritual bath.[5]: 471

Types by purpose [ edit ]

Ghusl becomes obligatory for seven causes, and the ghusl for each of these different causes has different names:

Ghusl Janabat is ghusl performed after sexual intercourse or ejaculation.

is performed after sexual intercourse or ejaculation. Ghusl Hayd is following menstruation.

is following menstruation. Ghusl Nifas is following lochia (vaginal discharge after giving birth, which can occur for up to 6 weeks after birth)

is following lochia (vaginal discharge after giving birth, which can occur for up to 6 weeks after birth) Ghusl Mayyit is ghusl performed on a dead Muslim.

In some denominations, two further categories obligate ghusl:

Ghusl Istihada is for irregular bleeding (in women).

is for irregular bleeding (in women). Ghusl Mas-hil Mayyit becomes obligatory if one directly touches a dead body.[6]

Ghusl also becomes obligatory following a vow or oath to perform it.

Water requirements [ edit ]

Similar to wudu, some water is permissible for use for ghusl whereas some water is not. Permissible water sources include:

Rainwater

Well water

Spring, sea, or river water

Water of melting ice

Water of a big tank or pond[7]

Ghusl is not allowed with unclean or impure water or water extracted from fruit and trees.

The acts of ghusl [ edit ]

The Quranic mandate for ghusl comes in surah an-Nisa:

O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are in a state of drowsiness until you know what you are saying or in a state of janabah, except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving.[Quran 4:43 (Translated by Sahih International)]

The phrase translated as ‘intercourse’ in this verse has been interpreted by Hanafi scholars to mean sexual contact, while Shafi’i scholars interpret it to mean both physical and sexual contact. Hence, the Hanafi school of thought does not require one to take wudu if there is non-sexual contact with a member of the opposite sex, while the Shafi’i school of thought does require wudu before salah and so on.[8]

Farā’id of Ghusl (Hanafi Guidelines) [ edit ]

There are three faraid (obligatory) acts. If one of these acts is omitted, it must be returned to and completed before the remaining acts.[9]

Rinsing the inner mouth Sniffing water and blowing it out. Washing the entire body.

Sunnah of Ghusl [ edit ]

Optional alternate method as demonstrated by the Islamic prophet, Muhammad:

Washing both the hands up to the wrists. Wash the private parts and remove dirt or filth from the body (using your left hand). Perform wudu (ablution). Pour water over the head three times, and rub the hair so that the water reaches the roots of the hair. Then wash the body, making sure that the water reaches all parts, starting with the right side of the body and then the left and rubbing it with the hands so that the water reaches the entire body.

In Islam, ghusl requires the washing of the full body. There are some differences in details between the Sunni and the Shia schools of thought.

Sunni school of thought [ edit ]

Start by making niyyah (intention) to perform Ghusl, say bismillah (in the name of Allah) and make the intention to cleanse yourself of impurities.[10][9][11] Wash the right hand up to and including the wrist (and between the fingers) three times and make sure to clean thoroughly, then similarly for the left hand. Wash the private parts and remove dirt or filth from the body (using your left hand). Perform Wudu as if for prayer. Ensure that the mouth and nostrils are thoroughly rinsed one time. If sitting on a stool or stone while bathing then the feet should also be washed when performing Wudu. But if sitting in a muddy place, feet should not be washed at this stage. Water should be poured over the head three times so that it flows all over the body, ensuring that the roots of hairs and parts not easily reached by water such as the back of the knees are washed thoroughly.[10] Pour water over both shoulders three times each (starting from the right shoulder). Hands should be passed all over the body when water is poured so that no part of the body is left dry. Move to a clean spot and wash the feet if not washed during Wudu As at the end of Wudu, it is recommended to recite the Shahada.[10][11]

“Ash-hadu-Allah-illaha-illahahu wa-ash-hadu ann-muhamaddan ab-duhu wa rasuluhu”[12]

If, after Ghusl, one recalls that a certain portion of the body is left dry, it is not necessary to repeat the Ghusl, but merely wash the dry portion. It is not sufficient to pass a wet hand over the dry place. If one has forgotten to rinse the mouth or the nostrils, these too could be rinsed when recalled after Ghusl has been performed.

A hadith attributed to Aisha bint Abi Bakr reports:[citation needed]

wudu as is done for prayer. He then took some water and ran his fingers in the roots of his hair. And when he found that it had been properly moistened, he poured three handfuls on his head and then poured water over his body and subsequently washed his feet.[13] When Allah’s Messenger bathed because of sexual intercourse, he first washed his hands; he then poured water with his right hand on his left hand and washed his private parts. He then performedas is done for prayer. He then took some water and ran his fingers in the roots of his hair. And when he found that it had been properly moistened, he poured three handfuls on his head and then poured water over his body and subsequently washed his feet.

Ghusl should be made in a place of total privacy.[citation needed]

In another hadith, Ibn Abbas stated that Maimuna said that Muhammad was given a towel after ghusl, but he shook off the water instead of rubbing his body with it.[14] In addition, Ibn Abbas recorded the following hadith on the authority of his mother’s sister. A hadith attributed to Maymunah bint al-Harith reports:[citation needed] [15] I placed water near The Messenger of Allah to take a bath because of sexual intercourse. He washed the palms of his hands twice or thrice and then put his hand in the basin and poured water over his body then struck hand against the earth and rubbed it with force and then performed ablution for the prayer and then poured three handfuls of water on his head and then washed his whole body after which he moved aside from that place and washed his feet, and then I brought a towel (so that he may wipe his body), but he returned it.

Makruh things in the act of Ghusl [ edit ]

Things that are makruh in ghusl.

To perform ghusl at a place where anybody is watching you. Performing naked ghusl while facing towards the Kaaba. Talking in ghusl. Doing ghusl opposite to farad ghusl. Reciting dua other than the bismillah

Shia school of thought [ edit ]

There are two methods of performing ghusl. One is known as ghusl tartibi, and the other is known as ghusl irtimasi.[16]

Ghusl tartibih [ edit ]

“Ghusl tartibi” means an ordinal bath, performed in three stages.

After washing away the najasat (e.g., semen or blood) from the body and after niyyat, the body has to be washed in three stages: head down to the neck; then the right side of the body from the shoulder down to the foot; then the left side of the body.

Each part should be washed thoroughly in such a way that the water reaches the skin. Special care should be taken while washing the head; the hair should be combed (e.g., with your fingers) so that water reaches the hair-roots. While washing the right side of the body, some part of the left side must be washed too, and vice versa.[16]

Ghusl irtimasi [ edit ]

“Ghusl irtimasi” means a bath involving immersion of the whole body in the water. It can only be done in a body of water, e.g., a pool, river, lake or sea. After washing away the semen or blood from the body and after niyyat, the whole body should be completely immersed in the water all at once, not gradually. One has to make sure that the water reaches all parts of the body, including hair and the skin under it.

Ghusl tartibi is preferred over ghusl irtimasi.[16]

Recommendable acts of ghusl [ edit ]

What has been mentioned above are the wajib acts of ghusl; there are things which are recommendable (mustahabb, sunnat) during the ghusl.[10] These recommendable acts are five:

Gargling three times and washing the nose three times. Performing the acts of wudu before the actual washing Wiping the hands on the whole body to ensure that every part has been thoroughly washed.[10] Combing the hair with the fingers to ensure that the water reaches the hair-roots. (For men) Doing istibra’ (urinating) before ghusl janabat. If a liquid comes out of a man’s penis after completing the ghusl, and he doubts whether it is semen or urine, he does not need to repeat the ghusl as long as he also urinated before the ghusl. If he did not urinate before the ghusl, then he must repeat the process.[6][17] This rule of istibra’ applies only to men.[18]
