The Conditions and States of Being Human…

Pearl Zhu

The condition of being human is the endless search for the conditions that allow the human to maximize human potential.

Being human is both a condition and a state. A condition – if you consider just the physical plane. A state if you consider it from the mental and emotional plane of being. One can assume a human state of mind, depending on one’s beliefs, values, and character. What are the conditions and states of being human?

The condition and state of being human are to respect other human beings. Nobody is perfect, however, we do have the choice to condition ourselves to act with respect towards one another . The condition of being human is to possess and practice the noble virtues of life. The main virtues being non-hatred, kindness, universal love, compassion, empathy or friendliness, are toward all beings and humility. These will help in developing other virtues like non-egoism, self-control, forgiveness, patience, tolerance, self-sufficiency, and self-reliance, uprightness, gratitude, etc. We are all individuals with different grades of humanness. Some are more human who has universal love and natural humility. Others are less human and are striving to become better humans.

The condition of being human is being who you are via self-reflection and self-realization. The condition of being human is the endless search for the conditions that allow the human to maximize the human potential and bring the humans dreams alive in the shared reality we call life. In other words, the condition of being human is to first find our true identity through self-reflection and self-realization and thereby avoid being a victim of situations and circumstances. Often today’s still immature society has to condition people to play by the rules, not do what they were born wired to do. The condition of being human is to enjoy your own unique life journey, to refine the meaning of life and learn something from it.

The condition of being human is the state of mind : either being unconscious, subconscious, conscious, or one can elevate oneself to a ‘superconscious’ state of mind which will be able to think not only of what exists (subconscious), how they exist in this world, being in the world (conscious), but also how could one possibly apply self in this world to change it, willing to act on how you see things as they could be (superconscious). What is one state of mind to one person need not necessarily mean the same thing to another? And that’s where the conflict comes in. What we project gets reflected back us. All conflict only exists within, and the Law of Reflection states we will project that conflict to find the external reflection of what we look like and in asserting we will never act like them again, we reprogram our behavior and end the internal conflict with our representation of self and are able to love ourselves, and love others as well.

Complexities of Being Human — Karlin J & Associates, LLC

At the very essence of us is a complex being that exists. It exists for the purpose of adaptability, transformation, contextual blending, survival, and even provides the opportunity for exploration and growth as an individual. Many of us try to subdue our complexities as an earnest attempt to force ourselves to not have to deal with every part of who and what we are. So we label ourselves “simple” in hopes that others will not challenge who and what we perceive ourselves to be.

We were not made to be simple but multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multifarious entities that have the capabilities to morph into whatever the situation demands of us. I’d begin to label all these characteristics of being human that make us who we are, but I’d prefer you investigate yourself and challenge even those perceptions….. Stop being careless. Exhibit emotions, express thoughts, dictate demands, feel others, love self, hold close, laugh uncontrollably, be “weird”, contradict yourself, challenge the status quo, fight mediocrity, confront complacency and ignorance, destroy limitations, counteract false assumptions, feel……………………. Let go…………………….. Breathe………Enjoy…….Just Be…………………

Rather than attempting to hide our various dimensions, we must learn to acknowledge and cultivate the different things that make us who and what we are and demand that others appreciate and reverence those things. For this makes us human…… Our complexities are our humanity!

I know it is scary to allow yourself to exhibit everything that makes you- you because it isn’t guaranteed that others will properly appreciate you for who and what you truly are. But rest assured that there will be someone who can handle your complexities.

This person will add to your complexities, challenge your dimensions, massage your emotions, diminish your insecurities and improve your possibilities. It’s okay to be you; for who you are gives me confidence to be me. Who you are provides me with a remnant of hope that I can release myself of the bonds of simplicity and single-mindedness that I placed on myself as a direct response to the fear of being mistreated or mishandled.

Please let yourself go. I promise I’ll handle with care……

The Complexity of Being Human

A red brick, 10-by-20-foot wall punctuated with bits of used clothing looms large in Lehigh University Art Galleries—the creation of artist Karyn Olivier, the Department of Art, Architecture and Design’s Horger Artist-in-Residence.

Steps away, behind the wall, is another of Olivier’s creations—a car-shaped installation formed by discarded shoes and topped with a silver car cover.

The two pieces will be on exhibit in the LUAG Main Gallery through May 25.

Olivier—the architecture department’s inaugural artist for the residency, which also rotates between the music and theater fields—uses everyday objects, locations and spaces to shift visitors’ experiences with the familiar.

Those who view the LUAG installations will be able to bring their own perspectives to the pieces, she says.

“Everyone can have a distinct definition of what a wall is—be it personal, be it culturally, be it in terms of your community. You can think about it globally,” she says. ”Everyone’s going to have some sort of unique connection to a wall that dovetails into politics and culture. “

Olivier says she likes the idea too of a wall being misplaced or displaced inside a structure. “So what do we have to think about? … I was thinking about, walls can be barriers, walls can be protecting. I like the fact that a student can be on the other side having a very intimate personal experience—like, in a way, the gallery’s just theirs. But then knowing … it’s a public space.”

The shoe installation was inspired by a photo that Olivier took years ago in Senegal of a man using his vehicle’s car cover to display shoes he was selling. “It was just beautiful,” she says.

As she planned the installation using discarded shoes she had purchased at thrift shops—some shoes badly worn—she thought about how such donations often get exported to third-world countries. She asks, “What does that say about how we value people who have less?” Still, she points out, some of the thrift-store shoes still bore price tags, a juxtaposition of impoverishment and excess that characterizes society.

“So I’m thinking about the complexity of our human existence, the complexity of what it means to be human,” says Olivier about the installations. “Nothing’s ever so simple.”

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Olivier became an artist as an adult after a career in retail.

As part of the semester-long residency, she is teaching a studio class on “Monuments, Playgrounds and the Town Square,” and she will install a permanent work on campus. An artist talk is scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 12 in the Black Box Theatre at the Zoellner Arts Center.
