Tackling ‘Favre’ and other pronunciation issue
Because I had to write this column before the game, I don’t know if the Saints won the Super Bowl. I assume they did and offer my congratulations for a job well done. If things didn’t go our way, then let’s enjoy the fact this season was the very best we’ve ever enjoyed in New Orleans. It’s been fun. Now I must return to an assignment that takes me to Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS – My mission: To find out if the whining has subsided in the Twin Cities since the Saints beat up on poor old Brett Favre and also to find out if his fans think he’s coming back next year to play for the Minnesota Vikings.
The answer seems to be maybe.
The folks here are nice, but don’t get them started talking about Favre and how the mean, nasty New Orleans Saints tackled him too hard, threw him to the ground and disrespected his future Hall of Fame credentials.
I tried my best to tell them to get over it and move on. I just wanted to know if they thought Favre was going to play again.
They don’t have a clue.
The fans still harbor a resentful attitude against the Saints. That’s how rivalries are born in the National Football League. Maybe the Saints and Vikings can really become one of the games everyone looks forward to watching.
The survey I so desperately wanted to conduct didn’t take long and didn’t really offer much insight, so I decided on something better or at least more fun.
I’ve always been curious about the pronunciation of Favre’s name. How the heck does a name that is spelled F-A-V-R-E get pronounced “Farve?”
Clearly, Favre is French. Just as obvious is the current pronunciation morphed through the years. But why?
I think I know.

I speak from experience.
Most of Mississippi, a great big part of north Louisiana and east Texas all have similar accents. I know; I grew up in east Texas. We tend to have our own rules of pronunciation. These rules don’t always make sense and quite often are painful for those that have to listen to us.
For instance, let’s look at the words weren’t and wasn’t, clearly plural and singular verb pairings and contractions for were not and was not. Many of my east Texas friends often get it wrong. They get it wrong because they don’t hear “weren’t” or “wasn’t” when they speak. What they hear is the word “wuhdn’t,” and the word is completely interchangeable with either the plural or singular reference.
As in, “they wuhdn’t do that” or “he wuhdn’t do that, either.” See, it’s confusing.
There are other examples, as well. Some are fun, others not so much.
I went to school with two different girls named Yvonne. That is neither news nor an interesting tidbit, but how their names were pronounced is quite interesting.
Both girls pronounced their names “Why-vaughn.”
Why did they do that, one might ask?
I don’t know, but I can only guess that their mothers saw the names in a catalog, magazine or picture book and thought it was a lovely name for their babies. They just didn’t have a clue about how to properly pronounce their babies’ names. So my friends grew up “Why-vaughn.”
The list of evidence goes on and on.
I grew up saying “harse” instead of horse and “card” instead of cord. I can’t properly pronounce fine, wine, sign or mine. I stretch the long “i” like the first string of a mandolin – way tight, way tight.
“How are things going?” you ask.
“Fiiine, just fiiine,” I reply.
I try my best, but I relax, let my guard down and someone asks me, “Whose dog is that?”
“It’s miiine,” I say.
