How To Reset A Frigidaire Refrigerator
Disclosure: We may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.
Just like many other fridges, a Frigidaire refrigerator may suddenly stop cooling, leading to worry that your food might go bad. How can you solve such an issue? Can you reset it to solve the problem, and if this is possible, how is it done? We researched to provide the following information.
A Frigidaire refrigerator does not have a reset button. However, you can reset it using one or more of the methods below:
Unplug your refrigerator
Turn the defrost timer anti-clockwise
Press the power-cool and power-freezer buttons
Keep reading for more information on how a Frigidaire refrigerator is reset even without a reset button. Also, find out the reasons you would need to rest your fridge.
How To Reset Your Frigidaire Refrigerator
Frigidaire fridges are available in different designs and styles. Some have the French door design, whereby the freezer is at the bottom, and the refrigerator is on top.
Another classic design is the side-by-side, characterized by two long continuous doors from top to bottom where the refrigerator is on one side and the freezer on the other side. Yet others have four doors.
Whichever style you choose, you will find the Frigidaire refrigerators have a wide range of features, such as water and ice dispensers, adjustable shelves, and much more.
With technological advancement, you may find reset buttons in many fridges. However, most Frigidaire refrigerators do not have a reset button, but this does not mean you cannot reset it.
The following are some methods you can employ to reset your refrigerator:
Unplug Your Refrigerator
This should ultimately be the first method you try when your fridge stops working. Unplug your refrigerator from the electrical outlet. Leave it unplugged for at least 5 minutes. Remember to follow what your manual says, as it may require you to wait more minutes.
Plug it back after the stipulated time, and you will have just reset your fridge. After this, you might hear strange sounds like clunking, rustling, etc. Though, this should not worry you. The sounds are coming from the motor in the compressor that shakes as it starts working again.
But, if this method does not bring your fridge back to life, you can try the following method.
Turn Defrost Timer Anti-Clockwise
This is another method to try resetting your fridge after the previous one has failed. Open the doors and look for the defrost timer, which is a white box. You can find it at the bottom of the back of the temperature control panel.
It is responsible for controlling the amount of frost in your refrigerator. It automatically turns on to prevent an increase in ice by melting all the frost. When this gadget gets damaged, your fridge will suddenly shut down or stop cooling altogether.
Now that you have found the defrost-timer, look for its switch. It is a small hole that has a notch on it. Take a flat-head screwdriver, insert it inside the notch and turn it anti-clockwise. By doing this, you have reset your fridge, and it should start running again.
As in the previous reset method, you are likely to hear some sounds as the evaporator fan starts to work.
However, if the timer is defective, you will still not have solved your problem. So, if it is still not cooling, you may have to call a technician to look at it and possibly fix it or replace it with a new one like the one shown below.
View this defrost timer on Amazon.
Detach Rear Access Panel
If you can’t find your defrost timer, you may have to access it from the back of your refrigerator. Move your fridge away from the wall, check the back, and you will see a panel at the bottom.
With a 3/8 inch socket screwdriver, remove the screws holding the panel, and place it aside. Next, you will find the defrost timer beside the compressor.
Follow the steps as in the previous paragraph by turning the notch anti-clockwise. When you hear the sound of the evaporator fan, return the panel, and secure it into its original position by putting back the screws.
Below is a video that shows you how to reset the defrost timer:
Press Power-Cool And Power-Freezer Buttons
Another method of resetting your Frigidaire refrigerator is by holding down the Power-freezer and Power-cool buttons simultaneously. This is also known as a factory reset.
However, this is not exactly a factory reset because such resets are done on gadgets that permit downloads. And since refrigerators do not receive downloads, they do not need a complete factory reset.
Your fridge should be able to run again after this particular reset is done to resolve minor issues.
Reasons To Reset Your Fridge
You do not always have to call a technician each time your refrigerator stops working. Sometimes, all you need to do is reset it. Below are some of the common reasons that require you to reset your fridge:
Randomly Changing Temperatures
If you are sure that no one is tampering with the temperature settings in your refrigerator, you need to reset the thermostat.
The temperature changes could be due to opening and closing your refrigerator many times. A power outage and changes in the weather are some other causes of the temperature fluctuations in your fridge.
Resetting your thermostat could do the trick. Press it down for not less than 5 seconds. For battery-powered thermostats, flip the battery several times in different directions and then flip it back in the correct position. If it does not work, turn off the power at the circuit breaker for some minutes and then turn it back on.
If it still does not work, do not hesitate to call your technician who will tell you what is wrong and repair the damage.
Food Is Quickly Going Bad
Is the food in your refrigerator going bad too quickly? The compressor may not be working. This gadget is responsible for the low-humming sounds that you hear.
Even before your food goes bad, when the sounds become faint or are too loud, it is a signal that the compressor is not working and will not adequately cool your refrigerator. So, try resetting your compressor before the food gets spoiled.
Begin by unplugging. Switch off the controls or set them to zero. Next, reset your fridge and freezer controls to around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If your controls have settings from 1 to 10, set it at 4 or 5. You will have to be patient and wait for 24 hours for your refrigerator to stabilize. After this, it should continue working efficiently.
The refrigerator Is Noisy And Kicks In And Out Of Operation
As seen earlier in this post, noises that are too faint or too loud could mean the compressor is not working. Chirping or squealing noises is likely a sign that the evaporator fan like the one shown below is not working. Resetting your refrigerator could easily solve these problems.
Check out this product on Amazon.
Your refrigerator operating one minute and the next it is not could be due to a minor problem, which you can verify by resetting your fridge. But if this does not work, there could be a bigger problem, and you will need to call a technician.
Moisture Droplets Outside The Fridge
Droplets on the doors and sides of your fridge may not be a very serious issue. It may be due to opening and closing the refrigerator door many times. Resetting it can restore it to normalcy.
Whereas, other major issues can cause the droplets to form, as always, when resetting fails, contact your technician to help you with this problem.
In Closing
Frigidaire fridges come in various designs and styles, but all have features to help you store your food efficiently. Despite the model you have, most of them do not have reset buttons.
There are several ways of resetting a Frigidaire refrigerator. You can start with the simplest, and if it fails, go on and try one or more of the other methods indicated in this post.
Remember, resetting is a way of running your refrigerator again because it has stopped working due to one reason or another. But, if this fails, you will need to call in a technician.

How to reset a refrigerator compressor
So your fridge is having internal problems, and you need to reset its compressor? Don’t worry, Asurion Experts are experienced with all major home appliances and can walk you through everything you need to know about troubleshooting your fridge. Here’s their guide to understanding what a refrigerator compressor does and how to reset it.
What does a refrigerator compressor do?
Your refrigerator compressor makes use of a low-pressure, gaseous refrigerant that helps keep your food cold. If you adjust the thermostat of your fridge for more cold air, your refrigerator compressor kicks in, causing the refrigerant to move through the cooling fans. It also helps the fans to push cool air into your freezer compartments.
How can I tell if my refrigerator compressor is not working?
Most people know what a functional refrigerator sounds like—there is a faint humming sound that intermittently comes and goes. Your refrigerator compressor is responsible for that humming sound. So, if the sound stops for good, or if the sound goes from faint to a constant or very loud humming noise that does not shut off, it may be a sign the compressor is broken or malfunctioning.
If you suspect you need a new compressor, it may be time to contact a refrigerator repair professional for assistance.

But first, let’s try a reset, which may resolve the issue.
4 steps to reset a refrigerator compressor
Resetting your refrigerator compressor is a useful option for anyone looking to defrost their machine or adjust its temperature. A reset can also sometimes resolve other internal issues, like malfunctioning timer cycles, so it’s one of the first things you should try if your refrigerator seems to be having issues.
Here’s how to do it:
1. Unplug your refrigerator
Disconnect your fridge from its power source by removing the power cord from the wall outlet. You may hear some whooshing or knocking noises after you do so; that’s normal. Make sure your fridge stays unplugged for several minutes, otherwise the reset won’t work.
2. Turn off the refrigerator and freezer from the control panel
After unplugging the refrigerator, turn off the fridge and freezer using the control panel inside the fridge. To do so, set the controls to “zero” or switch them off entirely. Once you’re done, you can plug your refrigerator back into the wall socket.
3. Reset your freezer and fridge temperature settings
The next step is to reset your fridge and freezer controls. Those controls vary depending on the make and model of your fridge, but experts recommend keeping your refrigerator around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For a fridge and freezer with settings 1–10, that’s typically around level 4 or 5.
4. Wait for the refrigerator temperature to stabilize
The minimum time you should wait for a refrigerator temperature to stabilize is 24 hours, so don’t rush things.
If you’re having problems with any of the above steps, schedule a repair with an Asurion Expert—they can help with your appliance repair needs.
7 Steps To Reset Your Frigidaire Refrigerator In 27 Sec (2022)
Is your Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling anymore?
Or did it stop working unexpectedly?
Well, whichever your case is, you might be thinking of a way to reset it in hopes of fixing the issue.
The good thing is, it’s possible and it can be done in only a matter of seconds.
How?
Continue reading to find out:

The easiest method to reboot or troubleshoot your fridge.
7 steps on how to reset a Frigidaire refrigerator in 27 seconds.
When you should restart your fridge and why you have to do it.
And so much more…
How to reset a Frigidaire refrigerator?
To reset a Frigidaire refrigerator, simply unplug its cord from the socket. Open its doors. Then wait for 15 minutes before plugging it back in. If this doesn’t work, you may also find its defrost timer. This can be inside or at the back. Then, turn its dial to the left to get the fan working again.
7 steps to reset a Frigidaire refrigerator
#1: Unplug your fridge
First, remove the plug of your refrigerator from the electrical outlet.
Typically, this is the only step when doing a reset on most fridges.
You only need to leave your refrigerator unplugged for at least 5 minutes. (Some may do this for up to 30 to 45 minutes.)
Then plug the cord in right after.
And that’s it – you just did a ‘hard reset’ in only a few seconds.
But if this step alone doesn’t work or if your fridge has switched off on its own…
Keep reading ’till the end.
Note: After unplugging your refrigerator, you might hear some sounds (e.g., rustling, clunking). Don’t fret, it’s normal. The noises are coming from the compressor as it stops running. Its motor shakes and it produces unusual sounds.
#2: Open your fridge and look for the defrost timer
In most Frigidaire refrigerators, you can find this timer inside the unit.
So open your fridge doors to look for it.
“Where is it located?”
It’s either placed at the bottom or behind the temperature control panel.
And if you know what you’re looking for, you can find it right away.
“So, what does it look like?”
A defrost timer is usually a white box.
Its job is to control the amount of frost in refrigerators.
To prevent a buildup of ice in your equipment, this timer automatically turns on. Then it’ll melt all the frost inside.
Now, this could be damaged over time.
And this might be the reason why your fridge suddenly shuts down or stops cooling.
Note: Once you find it, proceed to step #4. But if not, try the next step below.
Read next: 15 Refrigerator Do’s And Don’ts (Avoid #7 At All Times)
#3: Detach the rear access panel of your fridge
If you can’t find the defrost timer inside your refrigerator, it might be placed at the back.
So, move your fridge away from the wall and look at its rear.
You’ll see a back access panel at the bottom part. And you now have to detach it to control the defrost timer.
“How?”
This can be done in only a few seconds.
But, make sure first that you have a 3/8″ socket multi-purpose screwdriver with you.
Remove all the screws that hold the rear panel. (More or less, you only need to unhinge 4 of these.) Take out the panel. Look for the defrost timer box. (This could be beside the compressor or the black rounded motor.)
And then…
#4: Turn its switch counterclockwise
If you already found the defrost timer, find its switch next.
“Okay. What does it look like?”
It’s a tiny hole with a notch on it so you’ll easily spot it.
Now, insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the notch.
Then turn it to the left or counterclockwise.
Note: If you want to know how to do this in actual, watch this short clip:
“Is this the reset button of a Frigidaire refrigerator?”
Technically, no.
It only resets the defrost timer.
By switching it on, you’ll only remove your fridge from the defrost mode.
So if the timer is defective, you’ll not be able to fix it by doing this step alone.
However, this will cause your fridge to kick in after it suddenly stopped working. So it could be a temporary fix or another way to ‘reset’ it.
Note: If your fridge isn’t cooling properly, you might have a defective defrost timer. This will cause a frost buildup on your evaporator coils. And this is the reason why it stopped cooling.
Also, you have to manually turn the switch every now and then to get it out of the defrost cycle.
To solve this, you may contact a repairman to inspect your machine. Or reach Frigidaire service repair support.
But before doing it, try lowering the thermostat first and cleaning its door gaskets.
Based on their manual, the latter can be done using only:
Soap.
Water.
Soft fabric.

#5: Pay attention to the noises it’ll make
“What will happen next?”
After switching the dial, the evaporative fan will start to work.
You’ll also see and hear it spinning so its noise will be audible.
If not, your fridge isn’t working yet. You may need to repeat the steps and see if you skipped anything.
But when you hear the fan’s noises, congratulations.
It’ll now draw cool air and supply it to your refrigerator.
So if you place your hand inside the fridge, you can feel that it’s cooling again.
Problem fixed!
#6: Reattach the rear access panel (if you did step #3)
Now, if the ‘reset’ was successful, you only have to reattach the back panel that you removed a while ago.
Put it back in its original position.
Then again, use your 3/8″ socket multi-purpose screwdriver to secure it with its screws.
#7: Check your fridge and let it adjust on its own
Did you have a temperature problem on your unit earlier?
Either your fridge is too cold or not cooling anymore?
If so, check your unit after doing the reset if it’s cooling again or not.
Also, refrigerators usually stabilize after 24 hours. So during this time, avoid adjusting your fridge’s temperature.
When a day or more has passed, only then can you set the desired temperature.
What is the ideal temperature setting for a refrigerator?
According to Frigidaire, it’ll depend on the type of your fridge.
If with dial controls: Set it to “Normal” mode.
Set it to “Normal” mode. If Multi-Door with Temp Drawer: The fresh food niche should be at 39° F (3.9° C)
The fresh food niche should be at 39° F (3.9° C) If with electronic controls: The fresh food section must be at 37° F (2.8° C). While the freezer is at 0° F (-18° C).
Frequently asked questions:
Is there a reset button on a Frigidaire refrigerator?
There’s no reset button on a Frigidaire refrigerator. Usually, other fridges don’t have one as well. The only way to reset them is by unplugging the cord and putting it back in after 5 minutes.
But if your unit stopped working, there’s a similar method to a reset.
“What is it?”
It’s by turning the defrost timer dial.
So what it does is take your fridge out from the defrost mode. Then it’ll make your device work again like magic.
For the detailed steps, read the procedure above.
When should you reset a Frigidaire refrigerator?
You should reset a Frigidaire refrigerator if you need to fix its cooling system or defrost it. Do this if the temperature is too high from your set point and it’s not cooling anymore. As well as if it’s too low and cold inside.
A reset might also help if you’re having an issue with the defrost timer. Or if your fridge stopped working all of a sudden.
By doing this, you’ll allow the machine to cool down for a few minutes and defrost itself. Then cause it to return to its normal temperature.
So a reset can also enhance your fridge’s performance and save energy.
