2.972 How a Coin Tester Works

HOW A COINT TESTER WORKS QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS AUTHOR: David Hu E-MAIL: [email protected] COURSE: 2 CLASS/YEAR: 2 MAIN FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENT: Test different denominations of coins and reject counterfeit ones while accepting correct coins to be sorted and counted DESIGN PARAMETER: Coin Tester GEOMETRY/STRUCTURE: Figure 1: Coin Testing Apparatus Schematic Center: coin to be identified;

Left: coil that generates B field;

Right: coil that generates current from B;

Transverse line represents B field Figure 2: Electric Identification Probe EXPLANATION OF HOW IT WORKS/ IS USED: 1. User deposits coin into coin slot on outside of machine. Coin slot is dimensioned to the width and height for the thickest and largest diameter coin to be accepted.

2. Coin rolls down a chute and past identification probe that determines the denomination by the coin’s material properties. The probe consists of two solenoids with their axis perpendicular to the longitudinal wall of the chute. Current is run through one solenoid which then generates a B field perpendicular to the coin axis of revoluion . The magnetic field passes through the coin, is attenuated by the coin’s material properties and geometry before being received by the solenoid at the opposite end. The B field passing along the axis of the second coil generates a specific pattern of electric current, which can be matched with the correct coin.

3. a) Coin also activates switch that b) pulls slide member toward wall of chute (into page) by means of electromagnet, thereby preventing another coin from entering.

4. The probe sends information to timing mechanism for turning on of electromagnetic device that opens flap armature.

5. Coin falls down chute and onto first sorting weigher. The number of denominations to be accepted determines the number of sorting weighers (e.g. quarter,dime,nickel =3 weighers). Each sorting weigher is pivoted and contains a slot dimensioned to diameter of specific coin. The sorting weighers are arranged by size of coin to be accepted, with the largest coin size weigher on top. The left arm of the sorter weigher holds a counterweight that will be lifted only if the coin is the correct weight.

6. Sorting weigher pivots under the weight of coin and coin rolls toward chute.

7. Electromagnet turns on and the coin’s specific flap armature opens momentarily allowing coin to fall through chute.

8. Coin rolls down chute to be sorted. DOMINANT PHYSICS: t I =time to i event

Opening of Flap armature: t total = t coin + t armature

t coin = time for specific coin to roll from probe chute onto sorting weigher + time for sorting weigher to pivot and coin to roll off sorting weigher

t armature = time for armature to rise enough for coin to continue down chute LIMITING PHYSICS: The performance/use of the machine is limited by the position of the machine. If the machine is not seated on a level plane, then the coin will take longer to roll down the chute and the timing mechanism will open the flap armature before the coin can pass through. PLOTS/GRAPHS/TABLES: Figure 3: Detection of Counterfeit Coins WHERE TO FIND COINT TESTERS: This design for the coin tester limits it to places where either electricity can by obtained or a battery connected. Coin testers have few moving parts and simple circuitry, making them inexpensive to manufacture. They are in most vending machines and slot machines where counterfeit coins need to be detected. How to Use Commercial Laundry Machines

How to Use Commercial Laundry Machines

Similar to operating a hotel shower, working some commercial laundry machines can be intimidating. Before diving into how each type of laundry machine works here’s a helpful checklist to consider before using any type of common commercial laundry machine.

Check for left behind clothes or coins and return to a lost and found

Wipe down the inside of the machine with a disinfectant wipe to kill any germs left behind

Smell inside the drum for bleach – some people overuse bleach and you don’t want to find that out after your wash cycle

Before selecting a unique cycle option, Speed Queen, Electrolux, UniMac, Wascomat, UniMac, Maytag and Whirlpool machines operate using a standard set of payment controls:

Operating these machines are simple. Follow the instructions for each machine type and you’ll have clean clothes in no time.

Card Operated Front-Load Washers and Dryers

Toss clothes in the washer – make sure to not over pack the washer, instead loosely place clothes until the washer drum is between 75 and 80 percent full. Place detergent, fabric softener or bleach in the correct tray. Insert your credit or laundry card into the slot. You can fill your laundry card online or at a pay station in the laundry room. Select preferred wash cycle. After the wash remove clothes and place in the dryer. Clean the lint drawer. Insert your credit or laundry card into the slot. You can fill your laundry card online or at a pay station in the laundry room. Select preferred dryer time.

Coin Operated Front-Load Washers and Dryers

Once you’ve sorted clothes toss the load into the washer until the drum is roughly 75 or 80 percent full. Fill the detergent, fabric softener or bleach trays with your preferred cleaning solution. Insert coins into the machine, choose the cycle and start the wash. Remove clothes and place loosely in the dryer. Remove all lint from the lint drawer. Insert coins, select dry time and start the dryer.

Card Operated Top-Load Washers

Open the top of the washer and drop in detergent and fill washer drum about 75 to 80 percent with clothes – you can let the detergent and water mix while placing clothes in the machine. Insert BDS Laundry card or credit card. Select preferred wash cycle and press start.

Card Operated Dryers

Always remember to clean the lint filter – not only is a dirty lint filter a fire hazard but it also clogs the airway to the dryer resulting in poor performance. Insert your credit card or laundry card – you can fill your LaundryEye card with money online or at a pay station in your laundry room. Select the dryer cycle and press the start button.

Coin Operated Top-Load Washers

Open the washer lid and pour in detergent. Load the washing machine with clothes – roughly 75 to 80 percent full leaving enough room for the detergent to reach all of the clothes and space for the clothes to properly soak and spin. Insert coins, select your cycle and start the machine.

HOMEMADE COIN MECHANISMS The simplest is a horizontal slot with a gentle slope behind. The slope has a bit of wire running down each side. A coin simply makes an electrical contact between the two wires as it slides down the slope.

Another way to make a coin mechanism is to buy a low torque microswitch. The weight of a coin is enough to trip the switch as it falls. You can make the coin slot and slide out of metal, plywood or even cardboard.

Click here for full size templates if you know a bit about electronics, its even simpler to use a slotted opto switch or inductive sensor, as adjusting the microswitch can be fiddly.

COMMERCIAL COIN MECHANISMS

There 2 basic types, mechanical and electronic.

In the mechanical ones the coins roll down a slope. Coins of the wrong size and metal fall off and come back out the reject slot below. Genuine coins travel along the slope and off the end, tripping a microswitch as they fall.

The advantages are: they’re simple, can be used outdoors. Disadvantages are they jam more easily than the electronic ones. The Coin Controls S1 (pictured) is available from Eurocoin for about £45. Inside the electronic coin mechanisms, the coin rolls past two coils which sense the eddy currents generated by the moving coin. A microprocessor then compares the eddy currents with those of genuine coins, stored in its memory. An electromagnet then deflects fake coins out the reject slot. Real coins produce an output on a serial or parallel port (the parallel port is simplest to use, one pin usually changes state for each coin denomination).

The advantages are that coins jam less often and the electronics can recognise every different coin (some even have logic to add the coins until the required value has been inserted). Commercial arcades prefer them as they take more money because people can use the machine with whatever change they have in their pocket. The disadvantages are that they were more expensive – almost £100 – and can be less straightforward to connect to the rest of the machine.

The simplest one to use I’ve found is the Multi Coin Acceptor CH926 from Tiwan which you can buy on ebay for about £25. You can also buy a timer/relay board for it which gives an adjustable timed output when the right amount of cash has been inserted. There’s even an add on LED display to show how much has been put in.
