Doing up your bathroom or kitchen and don’t know what kind of taps to install? Want to know the difference between single-lever and dual handle mixers? From temperature and flow settings, user comfort, style and budget, we’ll talk you through the pros and cons of each mixer tap to help you make your choice.
A dual handle mixer is made up of two taps and one spout. Traditionally, the left tap will deliver hot water and the right will supply cold water. You will have to turn on both taps at the same time to achieve your desired temperature as the water is mixed through the flow of both taps. There are two different types: single hole taps : the tap body incorporates all elements;

In order to get the flow rate you want, you’ll have to play around with both tap handles to maintain your desired temperature. Unfortunately this means that dual tap mixers consume a lot of water and aren’t very practical; you need to find the right temperature every time you use the taps. These taps aren’t easy for young children or elderly people to handle and you won’t be able to set precise temperatures. What’s more, if you don’t turn the taps off properly, they do tend to drip.
A single-lever tap mixer features one lever that performs two actions: temperature adjustments when moved from right to left;
when moved from right to left; flow adjustments when moved up and down. Single tap mixers are easy for the whole family to use. In addition, they may come with anti scald protection to set a maximum temperature as well as a flow regulator which is great for saving water. High-end taps can easily cost over £200 and you’ll find models priced all the way up to £1000 from high-quality brands like Grohe, Hansgrohe, Nobili or Cristina Ondyna. You can also expect to pay these kinds of prices for a cascade mixer tap. Contrary to what you might think, there’s not much difference in price between single-lever and dual handle mixer taps. Finally, remember that looks aren’t everything: it’s more important to think about your own habits, the level of user comfort you want and water consumption.

Sequential mixer showers – This is the simplest to use thanks to a single rotary control. You start the shower by turning the control and the more you turn it, the hotter the temperature. The downside to this type is that you can’t control the flow rate. As with a single lever mixer shower, you can buy this type in either exposed or concealed form.
Concentric mixer showers – Here you have two rotary style controls that sit on top of each other. By turning the outer control, you can turn the shower on and operate the water flow. The inner control regulates the temperature; turning one way will make it hot and the other will make it cold. The good thing about this type of mixer shower is that you can leave the inner control set to your preferred temperature before turning the shower off, so the next time you turn the shower on it will instantly reach the temperature you had it set to last time you used it. Dual control mixer showers – These feature two controls; one which operates the flow and one which operates the temperature. As in concentric models, the temperature can be left at your chosen setting for next time you use it. Some models replace flow controls with diverter valves, which allow you to switch the flow of water between two shower heads or a bath filler. Dual controls are normally concealed.
Bar mixer showers – This has two controls too, but they are both on one bar. One control is for the water flow while the other manages the temperature. They can also have diverter valves instead of flow controls, which allow you to switch the water between an overflow shower head and a separate shower handset.
