Everything you wanted to know about a badminton court
Badminton has become a popular sport in India in the last decade or so. Largely played in social clubs and as a pastime during winter months, badminton saw a massive transition after Saina Nehwal won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. The craze to take up badminton and play it at a competitive level saw a great jump.
With PV Sindhu winning a silver at Rio 2016 and regularly making her presence felt at world championships, interest in badminton grew manifold.
It’s the fast-paced nature of this racquet sport that makes badminton exciting for the spectators. Be it the shuttle travelling at a speed upwards of 400kph or the delicate drop shots, the margin for error is virtually nil. Hence the understanding of the court and how to use the space make all the difference between winning or losing.
A badminton court is usually laid on a wooden floor with synthetic mats used as the surface of the court. The courts are meant to provide cushion and comfort to shuttlers who crisscross the playing surface to deceive their opponents with smashes and clever strokes to win points. Hence keeping the court surface prim and proper is mandatory.
A badminton court provides for two types of competition — singles and doubles. The lines of the court are accordingly drawn.
Badminton court size
As per the guidelines laid down by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the length of a standard badminton court remains the same – 13.40m (44 feet) – for both types of competitions. But the width differs with the singles court running wide till 5.18m (17 feet), denoted by the side lines, while for the doubles court, the width is extended to 6.1m (20 feet), marked as the doubles sidelines. The full court measures 14.723m diagonally.

The court has two halves measuring 6.7m (22 feet) each and separated by a badminton net that stands at a height of 1.55m (5 feet 1in) at the ends and dips to 1.52m (5 feet) in the middle.
The two playing areas on either side of the net are further vertically divided down the middle demarking the service areas. This means a badminton court has four service courts each of which is 3.88m (12.72 feet) long and 2.53m (8.3 feet) wide.
With laws of badminton dictating specific rules for service in badminton, the court has two service lines, the short service line, which is 1.98m (6.5 feet) from the net, and long service line 0.72m (2.36 feet) in from the baseline, specifically marked for this purpose.
In singles, the service needs to be beyond the short service line and within the boundary lines while in the doubles game, the service should be beyond the short service line but it’s the long service line that acts as the marker on the backcourt. This means, in doubles the serve length is shorter than in singles.
Volleyball Court Lines
Volleyball Court Lines Before we start learning about volleyball, and how the sport is played, let’s first learn about the volleyball court. Knowing the fundamentals of a volleyball court is essential to playing volleyball. There are six types of lines on a regulation indoor volleyball court. As a player or viewer, you may hear the lines be called multiple names: 1. Baselines/End Lines 2. Sidelines 3. Attack Line/Three-Meter Line 4. Centerline 5. Coach Restriction Line 6. Service Line
Baselines/End Lines The baselines or end lines are located on the ends of the court. They mark the end of the backcourt, and indicate the line that players must stand behind when serving. Any ball that lands beyond these lines is considered out of bounds. It is important to get a feel for where the baseline is so a defender can avoid touching a ball that is traveling out of bounds. Depending on who you’re talking to, you may hear these lines be called either baselines or end lines.
Sidelines These lines can be found on the sides of the court. Behind these lines, you may see coaches, referees, other players, and the media (photographers, film crews). As is the case with the baselines, any ball that lands completely outside of the sidelines is out. Sidelines are also where two players meet for a substitution.
Attack Line/Three-Meter Line The attack line is the line in between the frontcourt and backcourts, dividing each side for front and back row players. This line also marks where players can attack the ball on offense. Back row players are not allowed to attack a ball that is above the net from anywhere in front of the attack line. Also, any players in the front row must start a point in front of this line while back row players must line up behind it. This is also called the ten-foot line, because it is ten feet away from the net.
Centerline The centerline is located directly in the middle of the court, right underneath the net. This line divides the court into two equal halves. Players near the net must be conscientious of this line, as crossing it during a point will result in a penalty. This is in an effort to prevent players from landing on feet or legs after jumping.
Coach Restriction Line The coach restriction line marks where the coaches of each volleyball team are allowed to stand and move between during a game. This is the area behind the sidelines and behind the attack line. Coaches must make sure not to cross this line as doing so multiple times may result in a penalty or even a yellow card.
