Everybody’s heard of the popular 125cc go-karting race brackets, but the closely-related 100cc variation is lesser heard of throughout the karting world. However, its more manageable power and lighter kart chassis make it an ideal category for beginner adult drivers!
So, what is the top speed of a 100cc go-kart? 100cc go-karts can reach between 60 and 70mph. This heavily depends on track conditions, driver weight, engine type (2-cycle or 4-cycle) and a whole host of other variables.
Speed is exciting and important, but there’s more to karting overall that I think you’ll want to know! Things like what makes 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines different from one another, and how your enjoyment as a kart owner should always come first. Let’s jump into it, shall we?
Example Speeds Of 100cc Go-Karts
Although they’re only ball-park figures, it’s very handy to be able to look at a concrete number when thinking about speed potential. As such, I’ve scoured the current racing kart market and picked out a number of chassis with engines to match that’ll give you some insight into how fast these karts can go:
Top Kart SR30.2, IAME KA100 Engine – 65mph
BirelART RY30-S11, RoK Vortex VLR Engine – 68mph
Margay Ignite K3, Honda GX100 Engine – 62mph
Tony Kart Racer 401R, Yamaha KT100 Engine – 66mph
CRG KT2, Honda GX100 Engine – 61mph
It’s quite easy to see the variation between these karts, but otherwise, they all fall within the parameters for top speed as I outlined before. There is quite a key difference between the biggest speed disparities, such as comparing the CRG chassis with the BirelART, and that comes down to engine cycles.
A 2-cycle engine only has two places that the piston inside will move to, and far less components. A single piston controls the whole combustion process, so they’re far lighter than a 4-cycle and can output power way faster. This is because it finishes the combustion quicker.
By comparison, a 4-cycle engine has multiple pistons (mostly two, but can be as many as four), and for combustion to occur it needs to have moved to four different positions. Due to this, speed is outputted in a more controlled way and on a more reliable basis than the somewhat plucky 2-cycle engines.
So, in spite of having more pistons and therefore what you’d assume to be higher capacity for speed, the 4-cycle simply displaces its power in smaller bursts. Lower top speeds, but more consistent run-times and a longer engine life.
Generally speaking, go-kart enthusiasts tend to prefer the punchier, more exciting 2-cycle engines for their rigs. However, having a 4-cycle engine has its own host of benefits ranging from longer lifespan and generally being more reliable.
Now, looking at the list above, it’s important for me to point out that the Honda GX100 is a 4-cycle engine and every other one is a 2-cycle. Even then, the IAME has lower horsepower than the RoK Vortex, so there are still notable speed differences in place between the 2-cycle engines of the bunch.
Top Speed Isn’t Everything!
Sure, going fast is definitely the name of the game when it comes to go-karting and motorsports in general. But when you own a go-kart, there are far more important things to worry about than what your top speed is!
I already pointed out that the IAME engine here has a lower horsepower output than the other 2-cycles, and yet these engines are still widely regarded as fan favorites the world over. This is largely due to how easy they are to maintain and how widespread race series are using these engines specifically.
When choosing a displacement for your engine, it’s important to do research and find out how many race series are running with that amount. For example, 125cc engines are popular throughout the United States and you’ll always be able to find races. 100cc engines are more niche, so make sure to check that out before committing to one.
This will then extend into which brand of engine you choose specifically. IAME, RoK Vortex, Yamaha and Honda will all belong to separate race brackets to keep the playing field as even as possible, so this means more research has to be done on this aspect, too.
Essentially, you’ll want to pick a widely used engine manufacturer as your engine of choice. Oftentimes, that isn’t the fastest one of the bunch!
Also remember that an engine is as much of a blank canvas as your chassis is when you first buy it. Over time, you can tune it and squeeze more top-line speed out of it than what’s listed here as I only looked as factory standard figures.
As somebody who loves high speeds and the thrill of it, especially since I’ve been racing karts since my 5th birthday, I understand why the top speed list would draw you to the fastest rig. But especially since I’ve been racing and seen both sides of the coin, you should absolutely weigh up all of your options first before setting your heart on something!
Why Choose a 100cc Kart?
It’s a pretty difficult question to answer, but I’m sure you’re all thinking about it. After all, 125cc is the biggest and most notorious category all around the world, so why should you pick the 100cc bracket to race in?
From personal experience, the 100cc engine displacement is perfect for adults who have yet to participate in go-kart activity yet want to jump into kart ownership; whether that be in racing, or generally enjoying practice sessions.
Most rental karts use either 60cc or 100cc engines as standard, and are typically limited to top speeds of 50mph. If you compare that to the unrestricted 100cc engines you’ll be buying for your own chassis, 60mph topping out at 70mph isn’t an astronomical step. Then look at 125cc which can hit up to 80mph… if I was new to karting, I’d definitely be intimidated by that!
It’s all about manageable steps, and this comes in different shapes and sizes for all people. Some enthusiasts really want the thrill of the 125cc scene and will jump right into it regardless of their past experience, and others would prefer to work their way up to that level.
As well as being a good category for adult beginner drivers, I also view 100cc as a great mid-progression stage for Cadet-level drivers. I covered this in a previous article, but typically 60cc is Cadet karting territory and after they turn 12, they jump straight into 125cc karts as Juniors.
If you have a Cadet-aged driver who doesn’t quite feel comfortable in the large step-up from 60cc karts, 100cc variants are a great way to prepare them and further hone their driving skills and confidence.
After all, at the top levels of Cadet racing, their karts would be near the 60mph mark as it is, so a smaller, more gradual progression with 100cc karts that start in the 60mph range can be preferable for some younger drivers.
In essence, you want to choose this category if any of the above applies to you. It’s a fun and plucky little bracket of racing that checks a lot of boxes for people, but just like 125cc for some, it isn’t for everybody nor is it accommodated in every area. Keep that in mind and I really hope that you can get involved with it!
What To Look For In A 100cc Go-Kart
This is quite the tricky thing to offer advice on because picking your own rig is a highly personal process. Some people are looking for entirely lightweight chassis, others want some cutting-edge features that can give an edge in a race, and all sorts else.
First and foremost, make sure to do plenty of research and find out which chassis are appropriate to be fitted with a 100cc engine. It isn’t so much whether the engine will fit in the provided space, but more-so whether it will be powerful enough for the chassis build.
Adult go-kart chassis are always built out of either 30mm moly tubing, or 32mm moly tubing. You always want to pick the 30mm tubing option if you want to have a 100cc engine, because it will be that little bit extra lightweight and therefore easier for your desired engine to propel it around the track.
More than anything, do some research on which kart manufacturers and dealers are located nearby. Look into the company’s background and what they focus on when making their karts for the general public.
It’s important to pick a chassis made by somebody who has a location nearby, because getting spare parts will be far easier than always resorting to online guessing games! That, and you can get a rapport with people in your area to help fix issues or otherwise geek out about your kart, which is all part of the fun.
Otherwise, if you’re buying second-hand, ask to look under the kart to check out its wear plate. Go-kart chassis are made out of tubing and not much else, so it’s very important to make sure the tubes aren’t being worn down. A wear plate will see to that!

It has to be the Tony Kart Racer 401R, in large part due to my long-time admiration of Tony Kart racing pedigree but also the knowledge of their attention to detail in chassis-making.
The latest rendition of their Racer chassis has seen a whole host of upgrades, and it would feel like I’m owning a piece of history due to the 20 years that the Racer has been a huge facet of kart racing.
It is also a very flexible kart overall, because I could fit any of the 2-cycle engines I’ve previously mentioned to this chassis and go wild. On a personal level, I’d likely pick the IAME engine because I’m familiar with them as a whole, but the RoK Vortex is also an attractive engine due to the extra punch of power they possess.
The price of a brand-new chassis from Tony Kart is no small number, let me tell you that right now! However, it becomes worth every penny when you look back over the company history of World Karting Championship titles under their belt.
It’s the perfect kart for a dedicated racer.
Final Thoughts
There we have it! A look at five different karts with different engines, checking out the variations of speed you can achieve within the 100cc bracket. But, as I mentioned before, speed isn’t the be-all-and-end-all, because you can always tune an old favorite to compete with even the best of the best!
Go-Kart Top Speed By Categories
We all know that speed is an essential aspect of racing and motorsports. Different disciplines will have different top speeds, but since I focus purely on go-kart racing, I’ve wondered how fast can a go-kart genuinely go.
The top speed of a go-kart is around 50-80 mph (80-129 km/h), but some go-karts can reach speeds up to 140 mph (225 km/h)! Even my Supermoto bike doesn’t go that fast. A go-kart’s top speed, however, is impacted by several factors, like the engine size, the kart’s weight, and the aerodynamics.
I’ll try to explain how all of the aspects I mentioned above affect the top speed of a go-kart below. I’ll also focus on the top speed and acceleration of go-karts and compare electric go-karts to gas karts.
Go-Kart Categories and Classes
There are eight different go-kart categories that are present worldwide. Their main differences are the age groups that can participate in them and the engines they use. Some classes are even split depending on their engines’ brand (i.e., Rotax Championships). There are also specific weight limits that every driver should meet.
Below, you can see these eight classes, along with the top speed that is allowed on them.

Each of these classes uses different engines and allows participants from specific age groups to participate in them. I expect that some of you don’t know a lot about these categories, and it might be confusing when you want to sign your kid up for one of them. So, here’s a small rundown of each class.
Bambino Class
This is the starting point of every kid’s karting career, while most F1 drivers started go-karting by joining the Bambino category. Bambinos use 50cc 2-stroke engines, which are limited to 30 mph for safety reasons since the drivers are between 5-8 years old.
Cadet Class
Right after the Bambinos come the Cadets, whose age group ranges from 7-12 years old. The Cadet class is split into the Micro and Mini subcategories for 7-9 and 9-12-year-olds, respectively. The engines used by Cadets are 60cc, which is odd when you compare the top speed difference between the Bambinos and the Cadets (nearly double the speed). This happens because the 50cc engines used by Bambinos have a speed limiter.
Junior Class
The Junior class is where karting kid drivers transition to professional drivers. I have to admit that, despite finishing in 2nd place during my first professional race, I’d end up towards the end of the pack if I was racing Juniors. Juniors are between the ages of 12-15, and they use 100cc 2-stroke engines, which are incredibly fast and sustainable.
Lo206 Class
I didn’t know much about the Lo206 class before a friend of mine in the USA told me about it. Supposedly, they’re the result of mixing up karting with NASCAR, which doesn’t sound that bad. The Lo206 is split into the classes I mentioned above, alongside Seniors and Masters. The engine used in the Lo206 category is a 4-stroke one, which is why its top speed is lower than some other categories.
125cc TaG Class
The 125cc TaG category has been the most popular and competitive class for a long time. The 125cc engines used in this category are the best of both worlds; lightweight and powerful. There are several subcategories, but the earliest that a driver can participate in a 125cc TaG race is at 12 years old. If you’re looking to kickstart your career in motorsports, this is the class for you.
125cc Shifter Class
While the differences between the engines of the 125cc TaG and the 125cc Shifter classes are non-existent, this category isn’t for beginners. I’d even say that amateur karting drivers should stick to the TaG category. If you’re over 15 years old, you can participate in Shifter class races, but keep in mind that shifter karts are absolute beasts on the track.
Masters Class
The Masters class is weird, in my opinion. For starters, you’ll have to be above 32 years of age to join, there are two different divisions for lighter and heavier drivers, and they use 150cc engines. No other class uses these engines, and they aren’t nearly as powerful as other classes.
250cc Superkart Class
The 250cc Superkart class is the final boss of go-karting. You’ll need to have a lot of experience to join a Superkart race and, even then, you’ll have a 250cc 2-stroke beast at the back of your head. Most drivers who take part in such races are aspiring motorsport racers, so the competitiveness is really high.
All that said, each engine type that I mentioned above has different specifications, so I think it’s worth analyzing them to learn more about how they function.
Top Speed vs. Acceleration in Go-Karting
Before I go on about the different engines used in karting, let’s analyze the two types of engines: 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. I’ve extensively talked about these, but some of you might still not understand how these two are different. Basically, 2-stroke engines are very powerful at the cost of durability, while 4-stroke engines are less powerful at the gain of longevity.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s see all the different engines and their top speeds.
50cc Engines
As I said above, 50cc engines are used by Bambinos. However, there are times when adult karts have 50cc engines without the restrictions that are placed on them for Bambinos. So, instead of a top speed of around 30 mph, 50cc engines can reach up to 40 or 50 mph.
Some well-known 50cc engines are the IAME Comer C51 and the Honda GX35. 50cc engines are just an entry point, so their top speeds are low compared to other types but still high enough for an adrenaline rush. Most 50cc engines are 2-stroke, which explains their high top speeds.
60cc Engines
When you compare an uncapped 60cc engine to an uncapped 50cc engine, the differences in top speed aren’t that much. The 60cc engines used in the Micro category have a top speed of 50 mph, while the Mini category ones can go up to 60 mph.
The most used 60cc engines are the IAME Micro and the RoK Micro, as well as the Mini Swift and the Mini Vortex.
100cc TaG Engines
Things start to get serious once you see triple-digit cc. The 100cc TaG engines are the best entry-level engines for beginners because they offer a lot of power and are generally Touch and Go (TaG). They usually go up to 60 or 70 mph, and they’re most commonly used by Juniors and adults who are starting out.
However, the 100cc engines are not used that often anymore. The 125cc engines mentioned below are much more common, despite not being that much faster. Some of the most commonly used 100cc TaG engines are the IAME KA100 and the Yamaha KT100.
125cc TaG Engines
125cc TaG engines are the ones that everyone knows, and most karting classes use. They’re primarily used in the Senior category since they can be pretty fast at 70-80 mph top speed. If you’re starting out and looking for a professional championship to participate in, then the 125cc TaG engine ones are your best bet.
Some of the engines used in such championships are the IAME X30 and the Rotax Max EVO. If you add a nice Tony Kart chassis to either of these two, you’ll be racing a killer of a kart.
125cc Shifter Engines
The 125cc Shifter engines aren’t that much different from the 125cc TaG ones. However, you’ll need to be experienced with driving manual vehicles. And, even if you’ve been driving manual cars for years, you might have to practice a lot to participate in a professional shifter race. However, the 125cc Shifter engines can go up to 115 mph in sprint races, while they generally go up to 90 mph.
Some of the best 125cc shifter engines on the market are the IAME Shifter, the Honda CR125, and the Rotax Max DD2 EVO.
250cc Superkart Engines
Isn’t it weird that we go from 125cc engines straight to 250cc engines? Well, as I mentioned above, 150cc engines are only used in the Masters class, while 200cc karts don’t use 2-stroke engines.
250cc Superkart engines are monsters on the track. Not only do they go really fast, reaching speeds of up to 140 mph, but they are also shifters. So, they’re basically miniature cars. Some standard engines used in Superkarts are the Honda RS250 and the BRC250.
However, top speed isn’t everything in go-karting. If you want to be fast around a go-kart track, top speed isn’t the only factor you’ll need to consider. If a track is technical, which means that it has a lot of sharp corners and not long straights, then acceleration is much more important.
And, even if you have a kart that has superb acceleration and a top speed of 140 mph, there are so many things that can make you slower. For example, if you don’t maintain your go-kart properly, you’ll be going slower than Bambinos even if you’re in a Superkart. You’ll also need to have a chassis that’s perfect aerodynamically so that the handling of the go-kart is at its peak.
That said, gasoline go-karts aren’t the only types of go-karts out there…
Electric Go-Kart Speed vs. Gas Go-Kart Speed
There’s a lot of debate about which type of go-kart is faster. This happens because some people think that speed is all about having a high top speed, while others believe that acceleration is much more vital for speed.
Since I’ve raced both electric and gas karts, I can definitely say that electric go-karts reach their top speed much faster than gas karts. However, a 50cc or 60cc go-kart can usually beat an electric go-kart in a drag race.
So, in reality, the speed of a go-kart will heavily depend on the type of track that you’ll race on. If you’re just looking at the specifications of a go-kart, you’ll not have a good idea of how it’ll perform on a couple of different tracks.
For comparison, I’ve found that gas go-karts can go up to 140 mph (Superkarts), while the highest top speed of an electric go-kart (Sodi RSX) is 60 mph (less than half of the Superkart). However, the Daymak C5 Blast can do 0-60 mph in 1.5 seconds, which is faster than the majority of cars. I’ll leave you off with one of the fastest go-karts in the world:

Conclusion
There’s no doubt that karting is all about speed. Despite there being many different karting categories and go-kart tracks, top speed is essential if you want to be fast. That said, I’d definitely suggest you give electric karts a chance, despite them being slower than their gas counterparts.

How Fast Is a 125cc Go-Kart?
A few days ago, I decided to take my weekly trip to my nearest go-kart course. So, after I did a few laps on the 4-stroke kart that I was given, I had a cooldown lap to catch my breath. It was then that I noticed a couple of go-karts flying by me. I figured that it was because I was driving slowly, but even when I got back to pace, they were still going a solid 10-20mph faster than me.
Once I was back home, I did a bit of digging, and I found out why those karts were so fast. That’s when I found out they were 125cc karts, so I learned the following after some more research.
125cc karts can go up to 87mph (that’s 140 km/h!). Most 125cc go-karts can reach a top speed of 70-80mph. The kart’s top speed can vary depending on different weather conditions, tire degradation, and the track surface but the engine horsepower is the main factor when it comes to a go-kart’s top speed. That being said, I’ve included some ways to increase your go-kart’s acceleration and speed below.
While doing my research, I read about 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines. Even though I knew that they were different, I didn’t know that their output differs that much.
Before talking about the top speed of each, let’s compare the two engine types.
2-Stroke Engines vs. 4-Stroke Engines?
I’ve driven 2-stroke and 4-stroke karts. While I didn’t notice a huge difference, the 2-stroke go-karts felt like they had much better acceleration than the 4-stroke ones.
From my research, 2-stroke engines are lighter and offer lightning-fast acceleration, while 4-stroke engines are more linear, efficient, and durable. This, in turn, makes 2-stroke engines better for sprint races, while 4-stroke engines are better for long races.
2-Stroke Engines
A 2-stroke engine has an upstroke and a downstroke on every crankshaft rotation. Simply put, when the piston goes up, air and fuel enter the engine (crankshaft) and are compressed and ignited. The piston gets pushed down (downstroke) when the fuel gets ignited, and the fumes leave through the exhaust.
4-Stroke Engines
Unlike the 2-stroke engine, the 4-stroke one requires two crankshaft rotations. Instead of two steps (two strokes), a 4-stroke engine operates in four steps. The initial step includes the fuel being drawn, followed by its compression on the second step. Once the fuel is compressed, it’s ignited on the third step, and the exhaust valve allows the fumes to exit on the fourth step.
Here’s a side-by-side of a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke engine kart on the same track.

Their differences become much clearer by looking at how the two engines operate. The 4-stroke engines are heavier than the 2-stroke ones since they need twice the piston strokes to function.
That being said, 4-stroke engines are more complicated, which means they’re more expensive to buy and repair. But, they’re also more durable, quieter and the power is more linear.
A 2-stroke engine also needs you to mix oil and fuel, which isn’t easy for everyone. This means it’s terrible for the environment since burnt oil can come out of the exhaust and into the air.
As a general rule, though, 2-stroke engines are harder to maintain and worse for the environment, but they’re more powerful and easy to repair.
All of this is great, but even if a 2-stroke engine is 10HP, it will get demolished by a 4-stroke one that’s 30HP.
How Much Horsepower Is a 125cc Go-Kart?
Engine horsepower is the main factor that affects how fast a go-kart can go. Well, you know, your driving skill is also a main factor.
Anyways, unsurprisingly, not all 125cc go-kart engines have the same horsepower. From what I understood, most 125cc go-karts have an engine horsepower of 27-36HP. The majority of 125cc go-kart engines are closer to 30HP.
I decided to find some of the most famous chassis along with their engines so that you can get an idea of the numbers that revolve around 125cc go-karts.

As you can see, the horsepower of a go-kart isn’t the only factor. For example, a 2-stroke 30HP engine will most likely be faster than a 4-stroke 30HP engine because of the way it operates. The chassis might also be better aerodynamically, but I’m no Adrian Newey (Red Bull Racing Honda’s Chief Technical Officer in F1), so you’ll have to consult him for more information like that.
This is why there’s a difference in the top speed of the last three go-karts I mentioned above, despite having the same horsepower.
It’s worth noting that the top speed of any kart goes down for several reasons. As I mentioned above, the track might be slippery, or it might be scorching. The tires won’t be working optimally in both cases, so these top speeds can’t be achieved.
At the same time, your body weight plays a huge role in how fast your go-kart can go. For instance, you might be driving a go-kart with a Vortex RoK GP engine, but its top speed is less than 75mph. Unfortunately, none of us can turn to feathers once we’re strapped in the kart.
So, how can you ensure that your go-kart can go up to its top speed?
How Fast Does a 125cc Go-Kart Accelerate from 0 to 60?
Controversial opinion incoming: I hate it when people talk about a go-kart’s top speed. While I’m still a beginner, I’ve seen that I rarely reach my kart’s top speed on the track. Now, a go-kart’s acceleration is a much better metric to talk about.
I was amazed to find out that, under optimal conditions, a 125cc go-kart can accelerate from 0-60mph in a matter of 2.5 seconds! While most 125cc karts will do the same in around 3-4 seconds, that’s still really fast.
Generally, this is enough time to reach 60mph on a straight. While my maths aren’t the best, I don’t expect a go-kart in an ordinary go-kart course to get more than 65mph. So, what’s the point of a kart having a top speed of 75mph if it can’t do 0-60mph in under 7 seconds?
That being said, there are tons of factors that affect an engine’s acceleration. I remember playing some video games which had a slider for acceleration and top speed. The higher the top speed was, the less the acceleration. I never realized that the same is true for go-karts.
This is called tuning. Besides the weather conditions and the track layout, tuning is essential to your go-kart’s acceleration. The two things that you can adjust on a go-kart are the gearing and the jetting (also known as the fuel mix).
Fuel Mix
If you’ve played the F1 games from Codemasters (which I’d highly recommend), or you’re an avid F1 fan, you already know about fuel mixes (fun fact: F1 cars use up to 110 KGs of fuel per race). For those of you unaware, whether the engine is 2-stroke or 4-stroke, the fuel gets ignited by adding air to it.
Fuel mixes are affected by the track and the weather conditions. So, your fuel mix in Italy for example wouldn’t be the same as the one you’d use on a course in the U.S since the humidity level isn’t the same.
There are two main ways to name a fuel mix: lean and rich.
A lean fuel mix means that the engine eats up less fuel. You can do that by lessening the jetting in the kart’s carburetor. Lean fuel mixes offer higher top speed and subsequently lower acceleration.
A rich fuel mix is the opposite of a lean fuel mix. So, your engine will eat up more fuel by increasing the jetting in the kart’s carburetor. But, you’ll be getting much better acceleration and less top speed.
Gearing
Gearing is a bit more straightforward. Most engines, especially Rotax ones, only have one gear or a sprocket. The larger this is, the greater your go-kart’s acceleration will be. Subsequently, the top speed will be less. This also works vice versa (the smaller it is, the less your go-kart’s acceleration will be, and the higher the top speed will be).
