2021 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy 114
Harley-Davidson pared down its Softail lineup ahead of MY2021, but its venerable Fat Boy makes the cut to continue into the current lineup. It rolls with the relatively new, 114 cubic-inch Milwaukee-Eight engine in a similarly newish Softail frame, but the overall look still displays the classic genetic markers of the Fat Boy family. Better handling and improved performance join with stock ABS protection to complete the 2021 package.
2021 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Design
Signature LED headlight
Bright chrome styling
Standard-equipped keyless ignition and security system
Steamroller stance
The Fat Boy got its start as a teaser model in ’88 and ’89 before going into production for the 1990 model year, but it wasn’t until Arnold Schwarzenegger jumped one into history in the 1991 science-fiction action hit Terminator 2: Judgment Day that the Fat Boy became a household name. Ever a Softail model, the faux rigid Fat Boy hits all of the pertinent high points with fat, chrome-skirted front forks, a low 25.9-inch seat height, and solid-disc wheels front and rear.
Forward foot controls and full footboards join a short-rise/slight-pullback handlebar to put the rider in the windsock position with an upright posture that is fairly comfortable for most body types. Shorter riders may find the forward foot supports to be something less than confidence inspiring, and riders of all sort will have trouble using any sort of body English with such a rider’s triangle.
The fenders at both ends carry the suggestion of a traditional layout, but are bobbed slightly in a nod to the custom culture of old. The move to LED lighting led to a change in the actual headlight housing though the factory took steps to preserve the old chrome-nacelle look up front in spite of the modern lighting.
Out back, a set of strut-mount, bullet-shaped turn-signal housings join a slim LED lightbar taillight and side-mount license-plate holder complete the gear in the rear. Due to the beefy front end and hallmark solid rims, the Fat Boy carries lots of actual weight – like its visual weight – down low to make this a solid-feeling and solid-looking machine.

Dual bending valve front suspension
Responsive handling
Solid aluminum Lakester wheels
Standard-equipped ABS
Fat, skirted forks float the front end of the Fat Boy with cartridge technology on damping duty, but the only adjustment in the suspension is found in the under-seat shock that supports the rear end. Rake and trail are 30-degrees and 4.1-inches respectively, the former for stability and the latter for eager cornering and the Fat Boy benefits from both of these characteristics.
When the MoCo moved to discard its Dyna line and focus on the Softail as its sole heavy-cruiser platform, it started with a rebuild of the special frame to deal with handling and comfort issues associated with the original Softail skeleton. However, like the original, there’s a triangular swingarm that sells the old-school look and sets the tone for the rest of the design.
Solid cast-aluminum disc rims come machined in the Lakester pattern in an all-around 18-inch diameter. The tires are uncommonly fat as well with a 160/60 up front ahead of a 240/40, and not only does this reinforce the fat-and-low look, but it provides a relatively large contact patch at both ends for improved traction and safety.
Wet weight measures in at 699 pounds, so it’s a surprise that the MoCo decided to send its newest Fat Boy out with only one front brake. The only good news here is that you can safely get the most out of the available brakes through the stock ABS feature.

2021 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Drivetrain
Milwaukee-8 114 engine
Bone-crushing torque
Ample roll-on
Reduced vibration
The 2021 Fat Boy runs the Milwaukee-Eight 114 mill that appeals to cruiser riders who like a little get-up-and-go. Bore and stroke mic out at 102 mm and 114.3 mm respectively for a total displacement of 1,868 cc (114 cubic-inches) with a relatively-mild 10.5-to-1 compression ratio that will accept mid-grade pusholine.
The Mil-8 114 falls in the middle of the current Big Twin range between the base Mil-8 107 and the top-shelf 117 engine from the CVO lineup. Induction management falls to an electronically-controlled throttle body while the exhaust exits via a 2-into-2 pipe setup with a catalytic converter in the exhaust to help clean up emissions by burning off free hydrocarbons in the exhaust stream.
A single camshaft in the nosecone area actuates the four-valve heads through a quartet of external pushrods that ride in their own tubes. This arrangement marks a return to the designs of old that used a single cam, before the days of the Twin Cam engine. One new thing that isn’t as readily apparent is the pair of counterbalancers in the engine that helps tame some of the V-Twin shake. Some purists maintain that it takes too much of the vibration out, but I’ll leave it to you to decide for yourself.
Engine output is measured at 119 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm. Power flows over a chain-type primary drive, through a six-speed transmission, and to the rear wheel via carbon-reinforced belt for a top speed around 105 mph.

2021 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Price
As usual with H-D, the price varies according to color. At the bottom of the list is the Vivid Black model with its $19,999 sticker. Black Jack Metallic and Deadwood Green roll for $20,399, and if you want that two-tone Gauntlet Gray Metallic/Vivid Black package, you’ll have to shell out a total of $20,749.

2021 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Competitors
H-D has no shortage of competition from abroad, but for someone looking for a bona fide American machine, nothing else will do but an Indian bike. With that in mind, I grabbed the Indian Vintage for this head to head.
Indian Vintage
Right off the bat I’ll admit that the stock Indian Vintage is more of a bagger/old-school tourbike, but if you remove the quick-disconnect windshield and strike the bags, you’re left with a dandy competitor for the new Fat Boy 114. There’s no shortage of chrome to be had on the Vintage, but even more striking are the tan leather appointments that brighten up areas that are normally dominated by black leather.
ABS is a standard feature across the board, but Indian trounces H-D in engine electronics with a trio of Ride Mode profiles and a Rear-Cylinder Deactivation feature. Indian takes the extra step of building the engine to more-or-less match the same era as the rest of the machine. Faux cooling fins on the rocker boxes and parallel pushrod tubes call to mind the look of the old flathead/sidevalve engines, but it’s a thoroughly modern engine with 119 pound-feet of torque on tap.
Price is a wash as the Indian Vintage rolls for $20,499 to fall right in the middle of Harley’s range.

He Said
“It’s good to see the Fat Boy keep on keeping on, though I’ll wager that H-D more-or-less has to keep it in the lineup at this point as it’s been one of the most popular Softails through the years. I can tell you from experience, the Mil-8 114 is a very grunty engine with something to give in almost any gear, almost any speed. Personally, I’m not really put off at all by the lack of vibration from this engine family.”
She Said
My wife and fellow motorcycle writer, Allyn Hinton, says, “Complain when there’s vibration and then complain when there isn’t enough. I dunno. Seems like there’s always complainers. For 2021, the Fay Boy comes to us with refreshed styling. Bright chrome replaces the satin chrome from last year and I like it. I can never fault the performance of the Mil-8 engine. It’s grunty with ample roll-on anywhere in the rev range.

2018 – 2022 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob 114 – Performance, Price, and Photos
The Fat Bob saw a complete do-over in 2018, so if you rode it before and weren’t impressed, know that you haven’t ridden this Fat Bob. Heavily bobbed and blacked-out, the Harley-Davidson Fat Bob came with a choice of engines — the 107-inch Milwaukee-Eight or the 114-inch version – up until 2020 when only the 114 was carried forward. These grunty powerplants, along with a (relatively) sporty new suspension system from the redesign in 2018 give the Fat Bob an aggressive bent meant to appeal to a younger generation of rider.
Harley-Davidson Fat Bob Performance and Capability
I’m told that black is very slimming, and this is true with the blackout Mil-8 engines that seem to blend into the background, case-in-point on the Fat Bob. These engines are big enough to have smaller engines in orbit around them. I mean, they’re a real chunk, but they’d have to be able to contain that displacement, yeah? The 107 cubic-inch version runs a 100 mm bore and 111 mm stroke while the 114 has a 102 mm bore and 114.3 mm stroke with a 10-to-1 and 10.5-to-1 compression ratio, respectively.
Electronic fuel injection delivers the dino-juice, but we still have nothing in the way of TC or variable power delivery and that’s getting harder to forgive as we see relatively inexpensive imports coming in with all that and more. Even Indian Motorcycle under the Polaris umbrella, is bringing in rider modes, so it’s just a matter of time.
Always torquey, the Mil-8 plants take H-D engines to a new level with 107 pound-feet of torque from the 107 and 118 pounds from the 114. Not only does this give you the stump-pulling power you expect, but it also provides the strongest roll-on in both fifth and sixth gear, so you can make passes with more authority than ever.
The six-speed transmixxer crunches the ratios and sends power to the rear wheel via a quiet belt drive that is not only tough (I’ve yet to break one, personally) but easy to maintain. A balancer in the engine helps attenuate much of the engine vibration. It shakes a bit at idle (as it should) but as soon as you crack the throttle it smooths right out. Perhaps too much? Maybe, but you’ll get used to it.

Design
Harley-Davidson’s Fat Bob is one of only a few Dyna models that made the crossover into the all-new-in-2018 Softail lineup. Its popularity as an FXD played heavily into that decision, and it looks like the factory is doubling down on more of the same modern-custom/bobber vibe that endeared it to its fans.
Obviously, the move from the FXD frame to the FXST brings with it a host of changes. As with the other Softails, there is a certain amount of age-ambiguity with the Fat Bob’s lines by virtue of its faux-hardtail frame that cuts an entirely different figure altogether. While the previous-gen had a definite ’60s to ’70s vibe to it, the lines of the new-gen could hail back as far as 1949, or as recently as 1984 when the original Softail was launched.
Harley reached into custom territory yet again, but this time, it was going for an entirely modern look rather than shooting for the custom culture of yesteryear as it did with the Softail Slim, for instance. The fenders cut back to the bone and the absolute limits of functionality, with the Yamaka-size front fender and rear fender that just barely catches the struts for an unimpeded view of the rear hoop.
A tapered p-pad joins the solo saddle for two-up capability, at least on paper. Yeah, it looks cool, but you won’t want to put anyone on it that you care about very much.
The peculiar twin-headlight setup makes way for a modern interpretation of the classic headlight nacelle that uses a trapezoid-shaped opening to house a set of powerful LED headlights. Blackout treatment makes it onto this newfangled nacelle that all but disappears against the blackdrop of the risers, bar, mirrors, tripletree, and inverted fork stanchions.
When the factory shoehorned the Mil-8 engine into the frame, it dropped the much-maligned “ham-can” air cleaner in favor of a smaller round breather that shares the blackout treatment and chrome trim with the engine for a nice continuity of design that also gives your right leg a little break. Sportster and old-school Big-Twin riders, you know what I’m talking about.
An upswept exhaust system comes with full-length heat shielding with a kick at the muffler end that lends the Fat Bob a certain air of performance even if the forward controls are actually the limiting factor to cornering. That said, maximum lean angles have increased with 31 degrees of lean to the right, and 32 to the left, so it will lean further than most cruiser riders are willing to go. Only a true fiery-eyed pegdragger is likely to run into clearance issues in the sweeps on this thing.

Chassis
On the Fat Bob, tubular-steel members make up the all-new-in-2018 Softail frame just as they always have. In the first update since Y2K and the largest change since its 1984 release, the factory chopped out 50-percent of the frame members while managing to increase stiffness and handling.
That last is a pretty big deal since Softails had a poor reputation for handling and cornering performance, so anything that adds some fun and comfort is a good thing. The steering head kicks the forks out to 28 degrees for a bit of rake, and 5.2 inches of trail, so along with the newfound agility you can still count on a certain amount of stability with decent tracking.
Up front, inverted forks further bolster the sporty looks of the bike while providing greater strength and better damping profiles. Unfortunately, come sans adjustment so they are almost as vanilla as ever.
The rear mono-shock rides under the seat with a hand-adjustable preload feature that allows for easier adjustments than we had back in the day. With the old under-tranny shocks, you had to get down and wallow around with a spanner every time you had to adjust for changing cargo and passenger weight.
Blackout rims mount the 16-inch hoops with a fat 150/80 up front and 180/70 out back, and though I think laced rims might look a bit better, it probably wouldn’t matter given that the dual front brake discs all but completely occlude the spokes. ABS was optional on the 107 models but carries forward as standard equipment on the 114, and Harley left its linked-brakes business where it belongs, on the shelf.
Harley Fat Bob 114 seat height rides at 28 inches off the deck. It’s a skosh tall for a Softail, but still lower than most cruiser imports.

Harley-Davidson Fat Bob Competitors
Gotta say it was tough to find something to go head-to-head with Harley’s Dyna-turned-Softail. I see folks throwing the Ducati XDiavel around a lot, but I ain’t seein’ it unless you count the fact that they’re both cruisers with forwarding controls.
Ducati XDiavel
Sorry folks, but the XDiavel is just an Italian crotch rocket with the footpegs in the wrong place, and people riding look like they’re trying to turn Power Ranger into Easy Rider. Not only does it not work, it isn’t likely to appeal to someone who is looking hard at a Fat Bob. It falls short on power at only 93 pounds o’ grunt though the electronics are far and away superior to what Harley brings to the table, suspension, too.
Yamaha Star Raider
Next, I looked at the Star Raider from Yamaha. The looks are similar in that both embrace the custom culture though the Raider goes for the raked-and-stretched look as opposed to the Fat Bob’s chopped-and-bobbed build. The power figures show that Yamaha has something going on over there; namely, a claimed 123 pound-foot output that shames H-D’s new 107 and 114 Mil-8. Yamaha compounds the pain with a $15,199 ticket that will certainly be appealing to shoppers with no MoCo loyalty as yet, and that may be enough of a difference to buy some business away from Harley.
He Said
“If I’m honest, I’ll admit that I didn’t like the FXD version, and I’m only marginally more in favor of the new version. Don’t get me wrong, chopped and bobbed is great, but I feel it’s an artistic expression that should be done in a garage with sweat and love (not necessarily in that order), not something you roll off the showroom floor. Yeah, I know the folks nowadays lack the skills, tools, and experience (for the most part) to do it themselves, but I kinda feel like if you want to buy one of these, just go ahead and get the dealership to sew the patches on your vest, too.”
She Said
My wife and fellow motorcycle writer, Allyn Hinton, says, “The Fat Bob is the performance-driven model in the Softail lineup from the 2018 redesign. Yeah, it has a p-pad, but it isn’t comfortable, so consider this a solo ride. I like the headlamp, which is unique to the Fat Bob from last year. It’s more of a Mad Max look than the other Softails. The forward controls on the Fat Bob have been moved back a little and so the riding position is much more comfortable for shorter riders than on previous model years. I mention what is and isn’t comfortable, but honestly, the seat is more sportbike-like in its hardness, so don’t consider this a long-distance ride.”

Are Harley-Davidson Fat Boys Reliable? (9 Important Facts)
The Harley Davidson Fat Boy is a hot rod of a V-Twin cruiser in production since 1990.
As a member of the Softail family, it’s based on concepts Harley had kicking around since the ’80s.
With its iconic low frame, vast body, and solid disc wheels, the Fat Boy is one of the toughest looking cruisers on the street, but are they reliable?
Here’s the short answer to are Harley-Davidson Fat Boys reliable?
While numerous Fat Boys on the road haven’t had reliability issues in their entire life, other models have incurred speedometer condensation, vibration caused by faulty O-ring sizes, clutch problems, and suspension complaints. Still, it’s been considered a reliable bike for over 20 years.
How Reliable are Harley-Davidson Fatboys?
These days the Fat Boy is equipped with the dependable and powerful Milwaukee 114 Engine, a mainstay in their iconic lineup.
The bike has been in production since 1990; it’s stocked multiple engines in that time, each with varying reliability, although most owners experience few problems.
Online you’ll find plenty of satisfied customers and you’ll often come across reviews like this:
“50,000km on my 2019 and I have zero regrets. pulls like a train, superbly dependable, just returned from a 2800+ round trip from the coast of South Africa and it just kept going. I’m never selling mine.”
As a muscle bike, the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy is a popular choice for aftermarket performance upgrades like Power Commanders, fuel packs, pipe upgrades, etc. These components mess with the original engine tuning and tend to cause reliability issues once installed, especially when the bike isn’t adequately tuned during the installation.
Furthermore, once you tamper with your motor, you void the warranty.
The Fat Boy’s consumer score sometimes gets deducted because the seat’s construction is poor enough to wear early and be uncomfortable; aftermarket seats are available, and this complaint is more model-specific than some of the others.
The Fat Boy’s suspension system also takes some shots like this:
“I have a 2018 Fatboy 114 stock with only 215 miles. I experience a slight bounce no matter how smooth the road is at any speed. I have had it back to the dealer and had them take a look. They have test rode it and said ‘that’s just the way it rides with the bigger tires.’”
We do know the bike has a very unique feel to it, due to its wide tires, and has its own handling characteristics – it’s not as nimble as some of the other Harleys.
For some owners, this will take some getting used to.
But the Fat Boy is low to the ground, especially the “Fat Boy Low” models – the complaints about suspension might not consider how being closer to the ground gives your suspension less space to absorb routine road shock.
The Fat Boy was on the list of bikes affected by the notorious 2018 Harley-Davidson Clutch Actuator Recall.
The recall was initiated because the secondary clutch actuator cylinder may leak fluid internally and the clutch master cylinder may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch.
If you’re looking at a model from this year, make sure the recall has been addressed and the owner can provide proof of this.
In summary, the Fat Boy is a reliable motorcycle, sure it has its quirks but no bike is perfect.
Its reliability is also dependent on the owner, this includes staying up to date with maintenance, avoiding aftermarket upgrades and riding responsibly.
How Many Miles Can a Harley Davidson Fat Boy Last?
A Harley Davidson Fat Boy can last over 75,000 miles, providing it’s responsibly ridden by its owner and serviced properly at the intervals outlined by Harley in the owner’s manual. Based on an annual mileage of 4,000 miles, a well-kept Fat Boy can last over 18 years.
Fat Boys have been on the road for well over two decades now and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest they can go the distance. Some of these models will have had some engine work done, but that’s the case on all bikes eventually.
To put some meats on the bones of this answer, let’s peep at some real-life testimonies from Fat Boy riders.
“Mine has over 110,000 miles on it. I bought it with about 40,000 miles on it. High mileage? Yep. But it burns no oil, has good compression, and the only oil leak is a bad starter solenoid gasket. Still on the original top end, though I did replace the base gaskets. My opinion is that Evo and Twinkie motors are 100,000-mile motors if maintained properly. And many of them are going lots longer than that.”
“[Mine] was stolen. I had about 65 thousand on the odo. Although I did a lot of engine work (high compression branch heads, JE HC pistons, etc. The only thing that wore out was the clutch at about 50 thousand miles and the stator at around the same.”
I know a few Fat Boy owners who have had their bikes since the 90s, have cleared over 70,000-80,000 miles and counting, and will likely never ride anything else.
These riders are constantly inspecting and lubricating their engines, retuning their carbs and jets as they go out, and replacing engine parts at the earliest signs of wear and tear, so the pieces don’t cause more extensive damage down the road.
Further proof of the robustness of the FatBoy can be found on cycletrader.com, we even found a 2011 model with 167,000 miles on the clock although there’s no guarantee any bike will last this long.

What is Considered High Mileage for a Harley Fat Boy?
A Fat Boy is considered high mileage after 35,000 miles, though this has little to do with how much longer the bike will last. Some people assume that Harley cruisers are passed through multiple owners’ hands and ridden hard although this is not necessarily the case.
A well-kept Fat Boy can last longer than 35,000 miles and the odometer reading is often more of a pricing tool.
If you’re looking at a used Harley consider the following:
Ask For service and maintenance records and any aftermarket installation documentation.
Run the VIN to check for accident reports and to see if the bike in question was stolen.
Check for neglect, damage, weather exposure, and wear and tear – you really want to assess if the owner took good care of their bike.
Take it for a test ride: Ask the seller ahead of time to leave it cold, this way you’ll see if it has any starting issues.
Remember, the Fat Boy has been around since 1990 – there are many variations of the model with different engines, etc.
Familiarizing yourself with the specific year and model Fat Boy you’re looking at ahead of time allows you to ask specific questions about the bike such as recalls or common problems you may have come across during your research.
Making a list before you get there means you won’t forget to ask, it’s easy to forget in the heat of sales negotiations.
In short, high mileage doesn’t always mean a Fat Boy is at the end of its life, but it could mean you score a Fat Boy that’ll last for years for cheap.
What are the Best Model Years to Buy and Avoid?
Best Year: 2022, 1990
The 2022 Fat Boy is a low, beefy powerhouse with styling like a muscle bike featuring solid chrome disc wheels, fat tires, and a square headlight.
We’re also big fans of the first year of Fat Boy, 1990.
The 1990 Fat Boy is more than just the original; it was a new extension of the Softail family, a series of Harley Cruisers with hidden suspension systems that looked like hardtails–bikes that have had their suspension chopped off.
The first iteration of the Fat Boy set the tone for the buffed-out, custom Hot Rod vibe that some people still consider to be the quintessential look, feel, and sound of American motos, making it a personal favorite over here at Engine Patrol.
I’d take any Fat Boy between 90-99 and 2008-2022.
Worst Year: 2007
2007 was the bad-luck year of the Fat Boy, though there are plenty of happy ’07 FB owners on the road who swear by their bikes.
The 07 had a less-celebrated 96CI motor and an offset front end that set it apart from any other iteration, but the complaints don’t stop there.
The ’07 Fat Boy’s transmission had straight cut gears which caused a disruptive whining sensation in 5th gear or, in extreme situations, a clutch rattle that can be intimidating.
There are fixes to this problem, but of all the available Fat Boy options, why not just avoid it and go for a different year model.

What Usually Breaks First on a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy?
The first thing to break on a 2017-2018 Harley Fat Boy is likely its clutch. In 2018, the Harley Fat Boy was among the 178,000 bikes Harley recalled due to their clutches getting stuck in the engaged position due to leaking secondary cylinders.
A Harley dealership will fix this problem for free; if you’re in the market for a 2017-2018 Fat Boy, ask the seller if they’ve had their clutch upgraded via recall before buying it to save yourself the trouble of being the one who has to wait around while it gets fixed.
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Maintenance Costs
The Maintenance cost of a Harley Davidson Fat Boy is relatively average for a cruiser. Harley suggests servicing your Fat Boy every 5,000 miles. The average price for a service is $500-$600, putting the average maintenance cost at $1800 a year.
Routine Maintenance Costs of a Harley Street Glide:
