Exactly How To Reheat A Big Mac [I Test 4 Methods]
Have you ordered way too much McDonald’s and refuse to let it go to waste?
How about that lonely Big Mac just sitting alone in its cardboard box – surely you can just save it and reheat it later?
I have experimented with several different Big Mac reheating techniques to find out which one delivers the freshest burger while still keeping the bun soft and condiments edible.
(Psst. sorry lettuce, you’re just impossible to save).
These methods include:
I also give some tips on storing and freezing your precious Big Mac, should you be that way inclined (I had a lot of fun freezing Big Macs for this article!).
Ready? Let’s jump right in.
The best way to reheat a Big Mac
The best way to reheat a Big Mac is in a frying pan. Remove the lettuce and lone buns add place both patties in a medium-hot frying pan. Add 2 tablespoons of water to the pan and cover. Fry for 1-2 minutes, then toast the lone buns separately. Assemble and serve immediately after reheating.
Note: by lone bun I mean any bin without a patty stuck to it.
Psst: check out my other guide on Reheating Mcdonalds Nuggets while you’re here!
A note about my experiment
I purchased four Big Macs from my local McDonald’s and kept them in the refrigerator for a few hours before conducting my experiment.
I reheated each Big Mac separately in the pan, oven, microwave, and air fryer. I have based my verdicts on the following:
How fresh the Big Mac tasted and felt (think the texture of the bun, how the condiments fared, and if the meat wasn’t too dry)
How easy the Big Mac was to reheat (let’s face it, we don’t want a whole recipe to reheat a bit of leftover McDonalds…)
Reheating a Big Mac in a frying pan
To reheat a Big Mac in a frying pan, first, deconstruct the burger. Remove the lettuce add place both patties in a medium-hot frying pan (along with the bottom bun). Add 2 tablespoons of water to the pan and cover. Fry for 1-2 minutes, then toast the outer buns separately.
Assemble and serve immediately after reheating.
How to reheat a Big Mac in a frying pan:
Bring a lightly oiled frying pan to a medium heat. Remove as much lettuce as possible from the burger. Remove the top bun and middle bun and place to one side. Add the top burger patty and the bottom patty-cheese-bun combination to the frying pan. Add two tablespoons of water to the pan and cover the patties with a lid or metal bowl. Fry for 1-2 minutes. Remove the lid or metal bowl and place the individual patty to one side. Flip the burger-cheese-bun combination and add the top and middle buns to the pan. Fry for a further 30 seconds. Assemble the Big Mac, add fresh lettuce and serve immediately.
Wow! That’s a long list for such a simple task, hey?
A few points to note. This is the method I’ve found to be the most optimal at rehydrating the burger and bun and giving it that freshly cooked feeling.
Adding the water to the pan and covering is crucial in transforming the stale buns and patties into something that’s not only edible but delicious.
Related: How To Cook Burgers Without Smoke
It also rapidly melts the cheese and introduces flavor back into the burger that other methods fail to do.
Verdict
This is by far the best way to re-invigorate your stale leftover Big Mac. The burger was juicy, the cheese was melted, and best of all, the bun was moist and pillowy!
No other reheating method comes close to achieving these results.
The secret lies in adding water to the pan and allowing the Big Mac to steam. The added moisture works wonders.
Reheating a Big Mac in the oven
To reheat a Big Mac in the oven, preheat it to 350°F (180°C). Remove any lettuce and outer buns. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of water over the top of the Big Mac and wrap it in foil. Reheat for 8-10 minutes, turning once. Toast the outer buns for 30 seconds, assemble, and serve immediately.
How to reheat a Big Mac in the oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Remove as much lettuce as possible from the burger. Remove the top and bottom buns and place them to one side. Sprinkle on one tablespoon of water on top of the remaining patty-bun-patty combo. Wrap the combo in a foil parcel and reheat in the oven for 8-10 minutes, flipping once halfway. Remove the Big Mac and let rest. Wet the top of the remaining Big Mac buns with a sprinkle of water and toast both buns in the oven for 30-60 seconds. Assemble the Big Mac and enjoy.
Adding the water to both the patties and the buns helps to reintroduce some well-needed lost moisture back into the Big Mac.
Removing the lettuce can be a little fiddly, so this step is optional but highly recommended.
Feel free to either add the lettuce back once the burger has reheated or go one step further and add some freshly chopped lettuce.
Verdict
Despite my best efforts to keep the Bic Mac moist, it was noticeably drier compared to reheating it in the frying pan.
It was still good – but the meat taste was lacking compared to when the burger was fried.
If you have several Big Macs to reheat in one go, the oven could prove quite convenient.
Reheating a Big Mac in the microwave
To reheat a Big Mac in the microwave, remove any lettuce and place it on a microwave-safe plate. Next, cover the Big Mac with a damp paper towel. Microwave in 30-second increments until the Big Mac is piping hot. Allow the Big Mac to rest for 30 seconds before serving immediately.
How to reheat a Big Mac in the microwave:
Remove as much lettuce as possible from the Big Mac. Place the Big Mac on a microwave-safe plate. Cover the Big Mac with a damp paper towel. Microwave in 30-second increments until the burger is piping hot. Allow the Big Mac to rest for 30 seconds before serving immediately.
A Big Mac will take around 60 seconds to fully reheat in a typical microwave.
The damp paper towel is crucial here. It introduces steam into the microwave, which the Big Mac then absorbs into the buns.
How can you test this? Just feel how hard and stale the top bun of your Big Mac is before microwaving it. Once fully reheated, the bread should be very malleable and soft. Like magic, almost!
Note – try not to wrap the damp paper towel too tightly at the bottom of the Big Mac. If you do, you’ll end up with a soggy bottom bun. I learned this the hard way.
Verdict
The Big Mac was still perfectly edible. The bun was soft, and the cheese was all nice and gooey.
What was it missing? Some of the meat flavor and general Big Mac ‘essence’. It’s pretty hard to describe, but the microwave almost dulls the flavors in the burger.
Overall still a good method in a pinch. Don’t forget to use a damp paper towel – it makes all the difference.
Reheating a Big Mac in the air fryer
To reheat a Big Mac in an air fryer, remove any lettuce and outer buns. Place the Big Mac in the preheated air fryer basket (350°F) and reheat for 4-6 minutes, turning once. Sprinkle on 1 tablespoon of water over the Big Mac to help rehydrate the patties. Toast the outer buns, reassemble and serve.
How to reheat a Big Mac in the air fryer:
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (180°C). Remove as much lettuce as possible from the Big Mac. Remove the top and bottom buns and place them to one side. Place the remaining Big Mac piece (patty-bun-patty) into the air fryer basket. Sprinkle one tablespoon of water over the top patty. Reheat for 4-6 minutes, flipping once halfway through. Remove the Big Mac and let it rest. Wet the remaining Big Mac buns with 1 tablespoons of water and reheat both buns in the air fryer for 20-30 seconds. Assemble the Big Mac and enjoy.
If you’re thinking this sounds quite similar to the oven reheating method, you’re not wrong.
In fact, an air fryer is just a glorified mini convection oven with a much stronger fan.
The result? A harsher cooking method that is perfect for fried foods, but not so much other food – including burgers.
Verdict
The air-fried Big Mac was noticeably dryer than all over reheating counterparts.
This is despite the attempts at reintroducing moisture into the burger.
Honestly, I can’t recommend this method. All of the other methods I mention here produced better results.
How to store a Big Mac
The best way to store a Big Mac is in an airtight container in the refrigerator. First, remove as much lettuce as possible from the burger. Next, tightly wrap the Big Mac in plastic wrap and place it into an airtight container. Keep refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Freezing a Big Mac
To freeze a Big Mac, remove any lettuce and pickles and cover tightly in plastic wrap. Next, place the wrapped Big Mac in a freezer bag and squeeze out any excess air. Big Macs can last up to 3 months in the freezer. But for best results, aim to use the Big Mac within 1 month of freezing.
Defrosting a Frozen Big Mac
The best way to defrost a Big Mac is in the refrigerator. Place the Big Mac in the fridge where it will fully defrost in 8-12 hours.
How long can a Big Mac last?
If you’re wondering how long your Big Mic will be safe to eat, here are a few useful timelines:
Room Temperature. A Big Mac kept at room temperature will be safe to eat for up to 2 hours.
A Big Mac kept at room temperature will be safe to eat for up to 2 hours. Refrigerated. A Big Mac stored in the refrigerator will be safe to eat for up to 3 days.
A Big Mac stored in the refrigerator will be safe to eat for up to 3 days. Frozen. A Big Mac stored in the freezer will be best consumed within two months of freezing.
If you’re wondering whether your cold Big Mac that’s been left out overnight is safe to eat, the simple answer is no. The FDA says:
“Remember the 2-Hour Rule: Discard any perishables left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours, unless you’re keeping it hot or cold.” U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Note that these are maximums, and the freshness and overall quality of your Big Mac will deteriorate rapidly after it’s first cooked. For best results, aim to store and consume your Big Mac as soon as possible.

In terms of food safety, a burger left out at room temperature for more than two hours should not be consumed owing to the possibility of bacteria growth.
How Long Can a Mcdonalds Burger Sit Out?
McDonald’s Corporation is a multinational American fast-food corporation best known for its hamburgers, particularly its Big Macs.
However, the amount of time a McDonald’s burger can stay out is dependent on several different conditions. This includes:
1. The Type Of Burger
At room temperature, a burger made with mushrooms and vegetables will only be edible for two to four hours, but it may be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days if it is well maintained.
Although burgers cooked with beef, elk, bison, and turkey may be kept at room temperature for up to five hours.
They should be stored in the refrigerator for three to four days. Both have a potential shelf life of up to two months when frozen.
2. Storage Conditions
The duration of how McDonald’s burgers sit out is also determined by how it was kept.
When Stored in a Cool, Dry Place
The burger will remain edible for up to three to four hours if kept inside an airtight container.
Considering that this will prevent them from drying out and keep them fresher for a longer period.
When Refrigerated
If you keep your burger in the fridge, it will last for five days.
To keep your burgers cold, store them on the middle shelf of your refrigerator.
The quicker you eat your burger, the better it tastes and feels.
Tips on how to store burgers in the refrigerator
Before touching the burger, make sure your hands are clean.
Place the burger in an airtight container, careful to cover it snugly so it does not dry out if the package hasn’t been opened yet.
Mark the container with the date the burger was kept.
Refrigerate for up to two weeks.
Tip: Check the expiry date to determine how long it may be stored in the refrigerator.
When Frozen
Burgers may be frozen for up to three months; follow the procedures below to guarantee optimal preservation.
Wrap each burger in foil to keep it from drying out.
If you freeze them all together, they will cling together in the freezer and give you a headache when it comes time to thaw them.
Store it in a freezer-safe bag once each burger is separately wrapped in foil.
Remove as much air as possible from the bag.
Label the freezer-safe bag with the date of preparation and the use-by date.
Note: Keep in mind that cooked beef burgers may be frozen for three months.
3. Ingredients Used
The kind of flour and other ingredients used in burger production may have an influence on its shelf life outside, for example:
An unspiced burger has a maximum shelf life of two hours when sitting out, whereas a burger with spice may stay fresh for up to three hours.
4. The Thickness
The thickness of the burger may also influence how long it is left outside. Thinner burgers are more likely not to last longer than thicker versions.
Since bacteria need oxygen to develop, a thinner burger has a larger surface-area-to-volume ratio due to the lesser quantity of components utilized.
This implies that there would be a more exposed surface area for germs to thrive on. So a thinner burger may sit out for up to 5 hours.
Thicker burgers have a lower surface-area-to-volume ratio due to the more significant number of components.
This means there is less exposed surface area for germs to grow on, and they may sit out for up to 2 hours.
How to Make Burger Last Longer
There may be times when you will feel as if your burger is spoiling at an alarmingly quick rate.
Here are the tips to make your burger last for a longer time.
Only the burger should be frozen. If you produce sauce to accompany your burger and wish to freeze it separately, do so in a separate container. Be sure to leave enough room in the container for the burger to expand as it freezes after you move it there. Burgers should be frozen in single-serving sizes. It makes even defrosting and thawing considerably easy. It also simplifies serving individual servings. Before placing the burger in an airtight container, cover it with plastic food wrap or aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn.
How to Tell If a Burger Is Bad?
A few telltale indications might help you determine whether or not your burger is spoiled.
Observe the Color
Another measure of burger quality is its color.
If the color of the burger has changed or seems discolored, it is most likely contaminated and should not be ingested.
Visible maggots
Another indicator is that the burger has gone bad. If you find any maggots in your burger, toss them aside.
Maggots may transmit dangerous germs that can make you ill.
Mold Growth
Mold is another indication that the burger has gone bad. If there is mold on the surface of the burger, discard it.
Check the Expiration Date
Another method to detect whether your burger has gone bad is to check the expiry date.
If the burger is beyond its expiry date, it is likely not safe to consume.
Tip: You should also inspect the package for indications of damage. If the package had been tainted, the burger might have been contaminated.
The Consequences of Eating a Bad Burger
If you do not pay attention to the spoilage signs or if you have a specified illness and eat it after the expiration date has passed, you may get unwell.
Food Poisoning
Vomiting and diarrhea, as well as fever and chills, are all possible symptoms.
Food poisoning might potentially be fatal in extreme circumstances.
As the burger deteriorates, it takes up additional germs, such as E. Coli, which may cause severe disease.
The following symptoms arise when a burger gets contaminated:
Diarrhea
Stomachache
Cramps
Fever
Vomiting
Reactions to Allergens
Some individuals may have negative reactions after eating a contaminated burger.
Rashes, nausea, wheezing, swelling, sneezing, vomiting, and coughing may arise from eating infected burgers.

How To Reheat A McChicken Sandwich – I Test 4 Methods
Have you ordered a few too many McDonald’s McChicken sandwiches, and you just can’t bring yourself to let them go uneaten?
Fast food isn’t known for reheating particularly well. Buns go stale, lettuce turns limp, and patties become chewy or soggy.
To prevent this, I’ve tried out four different reheating techniques to bring these sandwiches back to life and restore as much softness and crunch as possible.
I’ll also share the most effective way to store them for maximum freshness.
The short answer:
The best way to reheat a McChicken sandwich is to remove the lettuce and mayo, then fry the patty in a pan and heat the bun in a microwave. Lightly oil a pan and fry the patty for 1-2 minutes on each side. Cover the bun with a damp paper towel and microwave it for 30 seconds. Reassemble the sandwich.

A note on my experiment
We all have those moments where we just don’t feel like cooking, and the irresistible lure of the Golden Arches presents an easy alternative.
This was the case last night, and I ended up buying a couple of McChicken sandwiches. A couple too many, as it turns out.
Well, I wasn’t going to discard them, so I decided to store my leftovers to eat the next day, even knowing that reheated fast food is often disappointing.
In fact, this just made me more determined to figure out how to reheat my McChickens.
Consequently, I tried no less than four different reheating methods before settling on the best way to warm these convenient sandwiches.
These included:
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in a frying pan (best method overall)
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in the microwave (nice bread, but soggy patty)
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in the air fryer (delicious crispy patty, not great for buns)
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in the oven (inconvenient and worst results overall)
The frying pan and air fryer methods produced the best results in terms of crisping up the chicken patty.
In both cases, however, the bun dried out a bit (worse in the air fryer), but that can be easily solved by microwaving the bread for a few seconds instead.
In the microwave, while the bread was fluffy and warm, the patty suffered. This method is convenient, and it tasted nice, but the chicken was soggy.
The oven was my least favorite method. It took ages to reheat the sandwich, and the result was a dry bun and a tasteless patty.
Then, of course, there’s the question of the lettuce and mayo. You can rescue these, but you need to deconstruct the sandwich before reheating and re-add these two components after (if you like).
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in a frying pan
Disassemble your McChicken and remove the lettuce and mayo. Lightly oil a pan, and then fry your patty for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Next, add the buns to the pan (cut side down) and sprinkle them with water. Cover the pan and steam the buns for 1 minute. Reassemble your sandwich and serve.
This method delivers a lovely succulent patty that is just the right level of crispy on the outside. The buns come out a little dry, so get them in and out of the pan quickly.
How to reheat a McChicken sandwich in a frying pan:
Deconstruct your sandwich, remove the lettuce, and scrape off excess mayo. Set your stove to medium-high heat. Lightly oil a frying pan. Fry your patty for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Add the bun, cut sides down. Sprinkle them lightly with water. Cover with a lid for 1 minute. Remove the components and reassemble your sandwich. Serve immediately.
This method works well for restoring the patty’s flavor, rendering it soft and moist inside and crispy outside.
Thanks to the covered pan’s steam, the chicken is almost as good as new and warmed evenly throughout.
Sprinkling the buns with water helps soften them, but it won’t completely freshen up 3-day old stale buns.
Don’t leave the buns for too long in the hot pan, or you might accidentally burn their edges.
You may choose, as an alternative, to simply warm your buns in the microwave. This will give you soft, fresh bread and eradicate any risk of drying them out or burning them.
When reconstructing, you can add the sandwich’s original mayo and lettuce back, or you can replace it with fresh greens and condiments.
My verdict
Overall, this method gave me the best results. I really liked how juicy and hot the patty was, and the buns, while a tiny bit dry, weren’t make-or-break.
In particular, I enjoyed the fact that this method compromised none of the sandwich’s signature taste.
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in the microwave
Remove the McChicken’s lettuce and mayo and set it aside. Place your sandwich on a microwave-safe plate and cover with a piece of damp paper towel. Microwave it for 30 seconds on high, and then allow it to stand for 30 seconds before replacing the lettuce and mayo (if you plan to). Serve hot.
This reheating technique delivers deliciously soft, fresh-tasting bread, but it makes the patty a bit soggy and not at all crispy on the outside. Beware of overheating the sandwich.
How to reheat a McChicken sandwich in the microwave:
Open up the sandwich and remove the lettuce and mayo, setting it aside. Place your sandwich on a microwave-safe plate. Cover it with a piece of damp paper towel. Microwave on high for 30 seconds. Then, allow it to rest for 30 seconds. Re-add (or replace) the lettuce and mayo. Serve immediately.
The damp paper towel introduces steam to the sandwich, making hardened bread taste soft and new. However, it is important that you only cover it and don’t wrap it, as wrapping can lead to a soggy lower bun.
While this method is lightning fast and undoubtedly convenient, it doesn’t do much for the chicken patty. The resultant patty is soggy and lacking flavor.
Heat the burger until it’s just hot enough for you. Overheating it will give you dry bread and a cardboard-esque patty.
McDonald’s fresh from the microwave will be piping hot, so be careful not to burn yourself with its steam.
My verdict
The microwave made the sandwich bun delicious and soft, and when you add the convenience factor, the result is okay overall.
For the patty, though, I wouldn’t recommend this method, as it ended up being pretty soggy and didn’t retain much of its original flavor.
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in the air fryer
Disassemble the burger, removing the lettuce and mayo and setting it aside. Set your fryer to 350°F (180°C). Place the patty in the basket and warm for 1 to 2 minutes. Then, add the buns to the basket and heat for a further 30 seconds. Replace the lettuce and mayo (optional) and serve.
Of all the methods I tried, this produced the most delicious, moist, crispy chicken.
How to reheat a McChicken sandwich in the air fryer:
Deconstruct your burger, setting the mayo and lettuce to one side. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (180°C). Place the chicken patty in the basket and heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Then, add the buns to the basket, cut side down, and heat for a further 30 seconds. Remove the patty and buns from the basket and reassemble the sandwich. Return or replace the mayo and lettuce. Serve hot.
This method heats the burger components very quickly, so you need to keep a close eye on the patty to ensure you don’t burn it. The same goes for the bread.
While the buns do dry out quite a bit, they also develop a nice crunch.
If you’re not after a crispy bun, you can consider heating it in the microwave for a few seconds instead. This will make the bread soft and fresh.
My verdict
I loved how fresh and delicious the chicken tasted from the fryer, and while the buns were dry, I enjoyed their crispiness.
An air-fried patty and a microwaved bun would probably be the combination to try for a perfectly authentic fresh-tasting McChicken.
Reheating a McChicken sandwich in the oven
Set the oven to 350°F (180°C). Disassemble the burger, removing the lettuce and mayo. Wrap the patty in foil and warm for 4 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle water on the buns, wrap them in foil, and place in the oven for 2 minutes. Open the foil on the patty for the last minute of heating. Assemble and serve.
Adding water to the buns will help reintroduce lost moisture while wrapping the components in foil locks in heat.
How to reheat a McChicken sandwich in the oven:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Disassemble the burger, removing the lettuce and mayo and setting it aside. Wrap the patty in foil and place in the oven for 4 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle the buns lightly with water and wrap them in foil. Place them in the oven with the patty for 2 to 3 minutes. For the last minute of heating, uncover the patty from its foil. Remove both the patty and buns from the oven and reassemble. Re-add or replace the lettuce and mayo. Serve immediately.
Timing is crucial with this method. Leaving the buns and patty in the oven for too long will dry them out and make the chicken tough and tasteless.
Too short, and the patty won’t warm through.
While this method doesn’t produce the tastiest results, it is convenient for reheating several McChickens at once.
My verdict
This was my least favorite method. Despite my best efforts, the reheated sandwich wasn’t moist; instead, it was dry, and the chicken was devoid of flavor.
It also took a lot of effort and time for a less than satisfying result.
How to store a McChicken sandwich
You can store a McChicken sandwich in the fridge in an airtight container. Keep it wrapped in its original packaging, or alternatively, wrap the sandwich in a piece of paper towel. Place in an airtight container and seal it tightly. McChickens will stay fresh in the fridge for 1 to 2 days.
Keeping your McChickens wrapped will help to seal in moisture, while the airtight container keeps harmful contaminants out.
Can you freeze a McChicken sandwich?
To freeze a McChicken sandwich, first, allow it to cool to room temperature. Remove the lettuce and mayo. Then, wrap it in a paper towel, and place it in a zip-lock freezer bag. Remove as much air from the bag as possible. You can store McChicken sandwiches in the freezer for up to four months.
The paper towel holds in moisture and protects the sandwich from freezer burn.

Allow the McChicken to cool to room temperature. Remove the lettuce and mayo. Wrap the sandwich in a piece of paper towel. Place it in a freezer bag. Remove the excess air from the bag and seal it tightly. Place the sandwich in the freezer for later use.
Lettuce doesn’t freeze or thaw well, so it’s best to remove it. You can always add fresh greens when you reheat your sandwich.
You can use a straw to remove the air from the freezer bag or a vacuum sealer if you have one handy.
How to thaw a McChicken sandwich
You can thaw your McChicken sandwich by allowing it to stand overnight in the fridge. Keep it wrapped in its paper towel, as this will soak up the extra moisture that develops as it defrosts. Alternatively, you can reheat your sandwiches from frozen.
