How Often Should You Check Your Crab Traps? – Crabbing Hub

Now that you mention it, who really knows how long a crab trap should be left in the water? Everyone, including myself, has their personal preference, so I did some research to find the best advice.

NOTE: When I say crab trap, I am referring to the image above. Most crabbers in Maryland and further north call them “crab pots,” while crabbers in the south call them “crab traps.”

It’s mostly agreed upon to check your crab traps, or pots, every 6 to 36 hours, depending on how soon you want your catch. Waiting any longer than 36 hours may lead to your crabs starving or someone stealing your catch. If you are using crab rings or collapsible traps, you should pull your traps every 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Longer vs Shorter

Looking for an answer, I scoured every crabbing and fishing forum I could find on the internet. While I did find a range of different opinions, the responses seemed equally split between 30 minutes to 8 hours, and 12 hours to 3 days.

Let’s compare the two. Pulling your trap sooner can lead to fewer chances of crabs escaping, it can give you a sense of where the crabs are biting more and biting less, and it lets you make sure your pots never run out of bait.

Pulling your trap every hour makes for a great relaxing day on the water. Some of my fondest childhood memories are spending hot summer days on the river. I would play in the water with my friends and family, and then have a freshly caught crab feast as the sun went down.

With its advantages also come disadvantages. Pulling traps more often doesn’t necessarily guarantee a larger or smaller catch. It does introduce, however, the irritating task of keeping crabs alive, especially on hot days. You will need a large cooler, plenty of ice, and linen or any type of fabric. Here’s a WikiHow article on Keeping Blue Crabs Alive.

On the other hand, pulling your trap later, rather than sooner, also has its advantages. More crabbers have seen a larger catch when pulling their traps less often. Some claim this is because more crabs accumulate in the trap after being left in the water longer, which attracts even more crabs to join in on the feast.

Pulling your traps every 1 to 3 days also makes for a faster crabbing trip. What would’ve been a full 9 hour day on the water turns into 2 hours total setting and pulling traps.

This may take away from the experience, and don’t get me wrong I love a long crabbing trip. The truth is everyone’s lives get busy from time to time, and some poor souls don’t have the time to spend all day checking traps. This makes a shorter trip an advantage in my book.

Pulling your traps less often also comes with its disadvantages. The most irritating one, in my opinion, is that the bait runs out. Running out of bait equals fewer crabs, and fewer crabs equals a smaller crab feast. This is why I personally recommend checking your traps every 12 to 48 hours if you can’t check any sooner.

Another disadvantage is crab thieves. Checking your pot sooner prevents the chance of someone coming along and stealing your catch. This is less likely with a private pier or beach, but still possible.

What about the Tides?

Believe it or not, crabs are lazy. They like to let the tides do the moving while they just go with the flow. (See what I did there?)

You, the recreational crabber, can use this to your advantage.

If you’re smart and patient, you can correlate pulling your trap based on the tide. You want to aim for pulling your traps right after Slack Tide.

In case you didn’t know, slack tide is a nickname for the time around or right after low or high tide. I had to look it up the first time I heard it.

If you set your traps before and pull them right after slack tide, you should see a much larger catch. The reason being is that this time provides more movement of the chemical smell of your bait from the current, which attracts more crabs.

If you want to know more about crab bait, be sure to check out this article.

Conclusion

It’s a big debate on when and how often you should check your traps. It’s easy to overthink, and can easily affect your haul if you check it too often or not often enough.

Hmm… so how often should you check your crab traps?

Like I said before, everyone has his or her own opinion on the matter. My advice: if you’re new to crabbing and just want a straight answer, you can’t go wrong with 24 hours. With enough bait and a sturdy trap, you’ll be sure to catch some crabs.

Inside ‘Deadliest Catch’

” ” Cameraman Marc Carter braves the conditions for the right shot. Discovery Channel

Pulling off a show like “Deadliest Catch” is no pleasure cruise. The entire film crew usually arrives about a week before fishing season begins, most times even beating the boats to Dutch Harbor. During this time, the camera crew does any lead prep that it can — checking and rigging cameras, taking inventory of tape stock and making sure everyone is up to speed on safety training and gear. The boats have at least four remote cameras attached to various parts of the vessel, so when they arrive, it’s a mad scramble to get onboard and start rigging. Each two-man camera/producer team is responsible for its own footage, so a friendly competition has evolved around who can dream up the most extreme camera rig and snag the best shots.

Contrary to what some viewers think, the camera crew doesn’t jump into in a water taxi at the end of every day and get shuttled back to a warm hotel room. The camera crew lives on the boat for the entire crab run, usually from three to five weeks. Quarters on these boats are tight, so the captains don’t allow more than two film crew members onboard. Because of this, there’s no soundman — meaning all audio is captured with camera microphonesand small mics attached to each deckhand. There are also boats and helicopters that capture footage outside of the fishing boats.

Aside from being skilled cameramen, the crew for “Deadliest Catch” must also be tough as nails, personable enough to get along with the boat crew and able to repair camera gear on the fly. One adventurous cameraman even stepped up and filled in as a deckhand after a greenhorn quit working. The show uses about 50 Sony HDV cameras per season, and most of these are lost or inoperable by the end of the run. Saltwater and ice are not good for high-definition cameras and tiny viewing screens. Only cameras with LCD viewing screens are used because of safety issues — it’s tough to stay aware of your surroundings if you’re constantly looking through a small viewfinder.

The camera teams weatherproof the cameras as best as they can, but refrain from using underwater camera housings because of the weight and bulk they bring. Camera teams report back to headquarters at Dutch Harbor each day by satellite phone. The show’s producers keep track of storylines and suggest footage ideas that help flesh out the stories. If a greenhorn on the Time Bandit is floundering and another on the Northwestern is doing great, the producers have a storyline. The land crew also helps to organize the footage for the exhausted camera team who often don’t even know what day it is, much less what they’ve been shooting.

One thing that sets “Deadliest Catch” apart from other reality TV shows is that the camera teams get interviews and reactions in the moment. Most reality shows tape interviews after the show has finished principal photography. The show’s producers believe that this brings immediacy and a genuine reality that’s missing from most other shows in the genre.

There’s nothing you can do; that camera is toast. So bury it at sea and click forward to read more about the show’s production and how much money these fearless seamen reel in.

Special Thanks Thanks go to Ryan McNeil for his assistance with this article. McNeil worked as an associate producer on seasons two and three of “Deadliest Catch” and is currently a director for General Assembly Pictures. Viva Ryan.

How are crab fishers typically paid?

A crab fisher is usually paid a percentage of the boat’s overall catch, something commonly referred to as a crew share. The more crabs that a boat catches during its time at sea, the more income the crab fisher earns. More experienced crab fishers who have been with the company longer often receive a greater share than less experienced crew members.

Crab fisherman requirements

Requirements and preferred qualifications that aspiring crab fishers should have include:

Education

While a formal education isn’t required to be a crew member on a crab fishing boat, some advanced education can increase the likelihood that you will be hired. For example, you may want to consider a two-year program in fishery technology or other similar two-year degrees. These programs include courses on seamanship, marine safety, navigation, vessel operations, vessel repair, or fishing gear technology. Some states also offer a mandatory crab boat course to prepare candidates for the job.

Training

Most employers train new hires on the job, although any experience with operating a boat or using crab fishing equipment will give you a competitive edge over other candidates. Most students in degree programs, usually located in coastal areas, obtain hands-on experience as part of their education. Any direct training in fishing will make you more competitive as a candidate.

Crab fisher career outlook

Employment for crewmen on fishing boats is expected to decline by 2% from 2018 to 2028. Growth for crab fishers depends on supply and demand in the marketplace. Because this is seasonal work, the optimal time to find employment is October through January. The transition from the derby system to the quota system in 2005 reduced the number of operating boats from 250 to 89, as smaller operations received quotas too small to meet operating expenses. This made openings on boats more competitive.

Crab fisher career FAQ

Here are answers to frequently asked questions about being a crab fisher:

What does a crab fisher do?

A crab fisher works on a boat using nets, traps and other equipment to gather crabs for human consumption. They must attach bait to pots and operate cranes to lift hundreds of pots into the ocean. The crabbers must also throw the hook to retrieve their catch and place the crabs in storage tanks. Finally, they must be able to safely stack the pots onto the boat.

How long do crab fishers stay out at sea?

A crab fishing boat is typically out to sea for three to four weeks at a time, although it can be much longer depending on the capacity of the boat and the length of time it takes to capture crabs. That is a departure from the derby-style system of the past. Under the old derby style, a larger number of crews competed to capture the most crabs during a small window of only a few days. In 2005, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game transitioned to a quota system, where established owners were given quotas to fill at a more relaxed pace. The transition increased the value of crab by limiting the availability of crab throughout the year. It also made crabbing safer for crew members.

How can you advance as a crab fisher?

If you are in a coastal area with commercial crab fishing companies, asking at the docks is generally a good way to get fishing jobs. Crab fishers with no experience will typically start their careers as a greenhorn. This position handles basic boat maintenance and cleanup. As the crab fisher gains more experience, usually by the second season, they can usually advance to the position of a crew member. Seasoned crab fishers who are licensed will eventually have the potential to secure a job as master licensed crabbers.

What are the different roles on a crab fishing boat?

Many different roles help a company successfully fish for crab, including:
