Lenovo is one of the top five sellers of computing devices in the United States. Besides its variety of options and customer-friendly policies, it offers top-notch build quality and long-lasting devices that have made it famous. Considering this, do you know how long these Lenovo laptop devices last?

Lenovo laptops typically last between 5 and 7 years. Many factors influence the lifespan of your Lenovo device, including price tag, model, laptop category, and build quality. However, it is primarily the maintenance and care of users that will prolong the useful life of your device.

A typical tech user questions the durability of Lenovo devices because of the a price tag. However, the price tag is not the only factor to judge the performance of any computing device. Aside from discussing the reliability and expected problems with these high-end Lenovo devices, this blog also discusses the average life expectancy of some Lenovo devices.

Are Lenovo Laptops Any Good?

Whenever my friends ask for advice regarding buying a laptop or computer, I warn them not to confuse the device’s high price with its performance. Sometimes products are priced highly for the brand name and they have the same specs as a much cheaper alternative.

So with that said, It is not uncommon to question the feasibility of Lenovo devices. Many people fear that these devices may not last long without researching much about the brand. There is, however, a completely different story regarding Lenovo and its devices.

Lenovo has become a top-notch brand globally because it offers versatility, reliability, operational efficiency, affordability, and convenience for users. It is gaining popularity because consumers love the way Lenovo finds intelligent solutions to their problems by introducing high-end yet affordable devices.

The following are some of the excellent features that distinguish Lenovo devices from other electronic manufacturers:

Durability and Reliability

Not every device offered by Lenovo offers equal durability and operational efficiency. However, when it comes to the relevant performance of other brands with a similar price tag, Lenovo offers something unique.

The overall design and build quality of laptops from Lenovo enhance the durability and reliability of its devices.

Within Lenovo, there are many sub-categories of laptops that differ significantly in terms of durability and user convenience. ThinkPad is undoubtedly the most popular brand from the company.

ThinkPad

Laptops in this category are available in a variety of price tags with a variety of features. An average laptop in this series can cost you up to $1500 that will meet your expectations regarding reliability and durability.

Regarding the performance, you will find a top-notch processor with a basic clock speed of more than 2.4 GHz that you can quickly enhance in the boost mode. Graphics experience is also dependable that can let you play many high-end games and work-related software.

Many ThinkPad laptops are ideal for coding students and architectural works because of their high-end build quality and operational efficiency.

Legion Series

Legion series is a top-notch choice for gamers who want dependable functionality with minimal lag. Lenovo has added exceptional hardware configurations to these devices to meet limitless expectations of gamers across the globe.

In particular, you can rely on the graphics performance and battery timing of these devices. Compared to other laptops with the same price tag, this series delivers superior reliability and convenience for online gaming.

All in all, Legion offers tremendous reliability and durability. However, I would recommend my audience take care of maintenance and careful handling if they want these devices to stay longer.

Yoga Series

Yoga laptops are a relatively new brand from Lenovo that is famous for customer-oriented design. The Yoga series uses a hinged design that allows users to fix the laptop screen in multiple ways. You can also expect the durability of these laptops when it comes to the reliability and operational efficiency of the laptop.

Research-Oriented Design

Continuous improvement is a critical feature that defines how Lenovo laptops function. I am not saying that every device from Lenovo outperforms every other on the market regarding innovation and design. However, you can find plenty of devices that feature exceptional, innovative designs to beat their competitors.

Everything from innovative keyboard design to multiple screen positioning and high-end hardware configuration to relentless performance of premium models results from continuous improvement and innovation.

Revolutionary Hardware Configurations

Premium ThinkPad devices now feature storage memory of up to 8 TB that is simply phenomenal. It is common for these devices to use Octa-Core processors for seamless operating power. There are other things too that enhance the capacity and operational efficiency of these devices.

For instance, some high-end devices from Lenovo now feature a 400 to 500 nits ultra-bright display that provides an exceptional outdoor display. Multiple screen sizes within the same category allow users to choose a screen size that meets their requirements regarding display and picture quality.

When it comes to RAM, you can find some Lenovo models that offer a RAM version of 128 GB. As far as multitasking and seamless operation of the device are concerned, this much memory exceeds users’ expectations.

Screen-based Keypad

Multiple Lenovo models feature a screen-based keypad. This thing has transformed the concept of traditional keyboards we usually see on many laptop devices. It changes from a keyboard to an illustration pad to an e-reader within seconds.

Versatility

One of the reasons Lenovo is one of the best laptop brands globally is the variety of options it offers. The company provides laptops for nearly everyone. You can find laptops ranging between $300 and $8000. These laptops are made keeping in mind the varying requirements of multiple segments of consumers.

If you are looking for high value for money, you can go for any model of Lenovo Ideapad.

If you want a high-end gaming laptop device with optimum operational efficiency, you’ll find many of them in the Legion series offered by Lenovo.

ThinkPad series from Lenovo targets businesses and students. You will find a wide variety of computing devices within this range. It is also suitable for people looking to practice coding and other similar software learning techniques.

Affordability

Price is one of the significant factors that affect consumers’ purchase decisions. In my opinion, one thing that separates Lenovo from other brands is affordability. Machines from the company offer high-end features of top-notch brands at an affordable price tag.

Being cheaper does not mean Lenovo compromises quality. For this reason, the company constantly updates its laptop devices in order to remain competitive.

Everything from processors to graphics cards and relentless screen display to long-lasting battery life is indicative of how the company pays attention to maintaining the quality of its products.

The devices start at $300 and go all the way up to $8000

. There are many excellent devices within these two extremes. At the end of the day, user requirements and financial capability define one’s preference.

Battery Performance

Battery life is another bigger thing that needs appreciation from the community. In general, Lenovo uses top-class batteries in its laptop device to ensure that users can use it continuously and while traveling.

The battery performance of Lenovo machines varies from model to model. When it comes to battery life, the ThinkPad series usually puts up a great fight. Several ThinkPad models provide a battery life of more than 5 hours on a single charge.

However, the Legion series may offer fewer battery hours than the ThinkPad series as it features robust hardware built to cater to the needs of gamers. With heavy processors and graphics cards, the device needs to be charged quickly. Still, you can expect battery timing of up to 3 hours on many premium Legion models.

Dependable Customer Support

Customer support is one of the primary things that decides the future of any company. Companies dealing with electronics and computer-related items often find it difficult to answer every customer’s query. But with Lenovo, on the other hand, customers get reliable responses and faster service when a complaint occurs.

The Lenovo support team can be contacted in a variety of ways. You can use a mobile app to communicate your problems besides contacting the company’s social media teams and phone agents.

A lot of useful information is available on the company’s website. If you fail to get things resolved by the phone staff, you can try consulting the frequently asked questions section on the company’s website.

There are always some negative aspects to every story. Similarly, Lenovo also has some issues associated with its device that need resolution by the company.

What Are the Problems With Lenovo Laptops?

The presence of world-class features in Lenovo devices does not mean you will not notice any downside. There are some issues with these devices that the company should eliminate.

In some cases, you might find some problems with the display. There are many ways you can fix display issues. However, the best way is to contact the company and get the issue resolved immediately. The customer care service at Lenovo works exceptionally well. You can trust them in this regard.

There are some power supply issues with cheaper models from Lenovo. You can get them fixed by visiting any nearby tech shop, or you can contact the company in this regard too.

Is Lenovo Laptop Durable?

The reliability of devices varies from time to time, so there is no absolute answer to this question. In general, you will enjoy far more reliability on ThinkPad and Yoga devices due to the world-class hardware configuration in them.

However, there are plenty of devices in both the Legion and Ideapad series that meet users’ expectations regarding durability.

Result-Oriented R&D Team

The company’s research and development department play a crucial role in making these products durable. There are many things the R&D department tries to improve. For instance, Lenovo has been successful in creating devices that are exceptional in heat management. The team has worked for many years to come with an effective heat management system.

Cooling efficiency is not the only area of the R&D department. Everything from enhanced process optimization to high-end graphics experience on many Lenovo laptops is the fruit of the hard work and continuous engagement of the company’s research team.

However, it is pertinent to mention that you may not enjoy utmost durability on many cheaper devices from Lenovo. Therefore, it is worth investing your time to search for a Lenovo machine that offers relentless reliability and durability.

In our opinion, the following ranking best describes the durability of different Lenovo models. (with 1 being the best and last being the worst):

ThinkPad Series Yoga Series Legion Devices Ideapad Series

Price Factor

One thing that can help you estimate the durability of any device is its price tag. A Lenovo laptop with a price range of $1000-1500 offers satisfying durability and can stand the test of time. On the contrary, if you buy an IdeaPad model that costs $500, you may not have the durability you expect from a top-class machine.

How Can You Predict the Durability of Any Device?

Many things can help you estimate the durability of any laptop. To arrive at a perfect decision, take the following factors into account:

Avoid the Newest Models

The recommendation to avoid newer models may seem strange at first. However, you need to understand the core issue behind this suggestion. More recent models do not have any history of user experience from customers. As a result, you may end up with a device that fails to perform when it comes to operational efficiency.

To avoid any uncertainty in the prediction of laptop performance, you may wait for the first 5 to 6 months. You can then check the reviews on that model to determine if it is worth your money.

Prefer Business-Oriented Models

Nearly every laptop manufacturer offers a business series that aims to target the business community. These are laptops that pack all the essential features to provide a satisfying user experience. Everything from processors to high-end graphics experience suits a wide range of consumers for a perfect performance.

Similarly, you can go for the Lenovo ThinkPad series if you are a regular machine user with plenty of workloads. Within this category, there are many options to consider with multiple hardware configurations. You may select the one that best matches your needs.

Solid State Drives

SSDs are way better than traditional hard drives. Try to go for a laptop that offers SSD storage options. These devices provide top-notch booting speed with minimal lag. Compared to other mechanical hard drives, it produces significantly less heat and consumes considerably less power.

Many Lenovo laptops offer Solid State Drives. You can select any one based on your requirements.

Define Your Needs

The best thing you can do before making a choice is to define your requirements. Once you have created an outline of your needs, you can go for further research. Just look for the features that you need.

For instance, you should prefer a convertible screen only if you want a dual-purpose laptop. Similarly, there is no need to look for high-end, expensive graphics chips if you are not a gamer. In this way, you will probably have things that matter to you. Moreover, it will help you manage the choice in terms of your budget.

Research Is a Key Factor

When making a decision, never rely on a single source of information. To make the perfect decision, incorporate all the available information and facts. After selecting the potential choice, it would be best to look for the information for that particular model.

This will give you a better understanding of the pros and cons of that model. At least, you will not regret your decision once you have read all the cons of the desired device once you do this thing.

What Is the Average Lifespan of a Lenovo Laptop?

The average useful life of a Lenovo laptop ranges between five and seven years. Many things influence how long your computer will last. The company offers a wide range of models with different price tags. Nevertheless, if you are careful with your machines, you can expect your laptop to last longer than a decade.

Careful Handling Matters a Lot!

If you’re a rough and tough guy who doesn’t take care of his stuff, then your laptop device will be damaged in a year or two, no matter the brand and build quality. If you try to handle everything with the utmost care, many Lenovo devices can last you up to a decade. To get things going, you can take care of the following:

When you are moving, carry the laptop with both hands. It would be better if you closed the screen before moving. This thing will help you in many ways.

For instance, laptop hinges will stay in place. As a result, you will enjoy a quality display with consistency. On the contrary, careless moving of a device can result in broken hinges that can lead to damaged or poor-quality display on the screen.

Try to understand the laptop’s capacity before taking any action. A Lenovo laptop with 4 GB RAM, for example, cannot run a game that requires at least 8 GB of RAM. Similarly, try giving your device rest for some minutes if it is overheating and responding inappropriately.

Try placing your Lenovo laptop on a proper work desk to avoid any potential damage or slippage. One of the primary reasons that contribute to the failure of laptop devices is accidental dropping.

Lenovo vs. Other Brands: How Do We Compare Them?

No one seems to beat Lenovo when it comes to high value for money. These devices perform exceptionally well, given the price tag. You can trust the quality, reliability, innovation, and relentless design of these machines in terms of satisfying user experience.

However, it is pertinent to mention that not every Lenovo laptop device features a top-class hardware design that is second to none. There are some highly inexpensive devices from the company to target low-end users. You can’t expect those devices to compete with top-notch laptop devices from other companies, including Apple, HP, Dell, and Samsung.

For instance, you cannot compare a $500 value laptop model from Lenovo with an expensive MacBook that costs more than $2000. That said, Lenovo’s devices can compete with those from high-end brands in price ranges similar to theirs. For example, a $1000 device would compete with a $1500 laptop from other popular brands.

Which Lenovo Laptop Will Last the Longest?

There are plenty of Lenovo devices that are trustworthy when it comes to durability and long-lasting performance. However, ThinkPad devices outperform many of their models. Within the ThinkPad series, you will find plenty of options.

You can try any device between $1000 and $1500 if you are looking for high value. However, it would help if you went for the one that best matches your requirements and budget.

Conclusion

Lenovo is one of the leading electronic device providers. The company has widened its customer base over the years. Regardless of the inexpensive price tag, laptops from Lenovo last longer than the user’s expectations. In general, Lenovo laptops have an average lifespan of 5 to 7 years.

What are the best Lenovo laptops?

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon isn’t just the best Lenovo laptop, it’s one of the best laptops on the market. Great for business users but also students or everyday users who want a lightweight machine, the X1 Carbon weighs just over 2 pounds yet delivers fast performance in a military-tested chassis. The only subset of consumers the X1 Carbon doesn’t suit are those on a budget and gamers.

If you’re looking to save some money, the ThinkBook 13 is another great option. It has fast speeds, a comfortable keyboard and decent battery life. If you’d prefer a laptop made for consumers, rather than enterprise users, the Lenovo Yoga 9i is an outstanding option and a good alternative to the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 or HP Spectre x360 14. You should also put the new ThinkPad X1 Nano on your list if you need the absolute most potable business laptop.

For gamers, the Legion 5 Pro is a great choice and, depending on your configuration, can play the latest AAA games. And if you’re on a very tight budget, the Chromebook Duet is a fantastic detachable 2-in-1 that sells for just $279.

The best Lenovo laptops

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon is, once again, the best business laptop thanks to its sleek design and fast performance. (Image credit: Phillip Tracy/Laptop Mag)

Lenovo made several welcome changes to the 9th Gen edition of its flagship business model. On top of fast performance from 11th Gen Intel CPUs, you get epic battery life, powerful quad speakers, a new 14-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and plenty of ports, all in an impossibly lightweight chassis (2.5 pounds).

But it’s still those classic ThinkPad features — a durable design (with MIL-STD-810G strength), best-in-class keyboard and stealthy black/red aesthetics — that carry the X1 Carbon to greatness.

Yes, we wish the ThinkPad X1 Carbon hadn’t ditched the SD card reader in the previous, and top configurations can get very expensive, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a better overall business machine.

Lenovo’s Yoga 9i refines a proven formula, making it one of the best Lenovo laptops around. (Image credit: Laptop Mag)

The successor to the excellent Yoga C940, the Lenovo Yoga 9i takes a proven formula and refines it. Subtle design improvements, long battery life (11:15) and refreshed 11th Gen Intel processors make the Yoga 9i a worthy successor to one of last year’s top 2-in-1 laptops.

As you’d expect from a Yoga-series laptop, the Yoga 9i has a premium, ultra-portable chassis and a unique hinge that doubles as a rotating soundbar speaker. As a 2-in-1, that hinge can rotate 360-degrees to convert the Yoga 9i into a tablet or be placed in tent mode so you can watch movies without a keyboard in the way. When it comes to viewing content, the Yoga 9i’s 1080p (4K is available) display is crisp, vibrant and bright.

For all the basics it gets right, my favorite things about the Yoga 9i are its extra features, which include a webcam cover (no more need to buy tape), a slot for the improved Active Pen and a fingerprint sensor. Unfortunately, there is no IR camera.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 7 is the latest iteration and is also a fantastic option.

Artists and writers who prefer to write/draw by hand will appreciate the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, the best 2-in-1 laptop. (Image credit: Phillip Tracy/Laptop Mag)

We still love the signature matte-black carbon fiber found on most ThinkPads, but the aluminum and magnesium ThinkPad X1 Yoga is a gorgeous change of pace. Not only does it have a slim design, but this convertible 2-in-1 flaunts a bright display and offers a best-in-class keyboard and long battery life. These combine to make the best Lenovo laptop for anyone who those looking for a convertible.

You also get loads of extra goodies, like a built-in stylus slot and webcam cover. We love the ThinkPad X1 Carbon for its super-lightweight chassis, but you should definitely get the Yoga instead if you want to use a stylus or prefer a convertible design. If you’re looking for something more unique, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga steps things up with a durable yet ultra-lightweight design.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is the best 16-inch Lenovo laptop for professionals (Image credit: Future)

Lenovo couldn’t have picked a better name for the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 — extreme is the operative word here. This 16-inch laptop, packed with extreme internals such as a top-of-the-line 11th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU and powerful Nvidia 30-series graphics, was built to make its rivals sweat. Someone check on the Dell XPS 15!

The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is ideal for handling extreme workloads for professionals, whether you’re a creator, architect or engineer. As a cherry on top, they can relax and play their favorite graphics-intensive games after a long day of productivity. With a durable chassis, crisp 1080p webcam, great performance, and graphics, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 is one of the best business laptops on the market.

If you want a value pick, the ThinkPad X13 is the best Lenovo laptop for under $1,000. (Image credit: Laptop Mag)

A Lenovo business laptop for under $1,000? It’s time to have a chat with your IT manager. The budget-friendly ThinkPad X13 with AMD chips delivers some of the best elements of the ThinkPad lineup at a much lower price than we’re used to.

Some of those features include a portable, minimalist chassis with military-grade durability, an outstanding keyboard and plenty of security features, including a fingerprint sensor and IR camera. And thanks to its AMD Ryzen CPUs, the ThinkPad X13 has incredible performance at this price. The only major downside is the subpar battery life, but around 8 hours isn’t terrible.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon remains the best Lenovo laptop if you can afford one, but the ThinkPad X13 is an excellent, low-price alternative.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Nano is the best 13-inch Lenovo laptop. (Image credit: Laptop Mag)

The X1 Nano is the new kid on the block, and it has a few tricks up its sleeve. Weighing only 2 pounds, the Nano is the lightest ThinkPad laptop ever. It gains portability by trading screen real estate. However, its 13-inch, 2K panel is gorgeous and the 16:10 aspect ratio makes up for the smaller size.

On top of that, the X1 Nano gets blistering performance out of its 11th Gen Intel CPUs and its 12 hours of battery life is baffling considering the high-res screen and ultra-lightweight design.

There are a few downsides to consider, like its limited ports and small touchpad, but overall, the X1 Nano achieves what Lenovo set out to do — deliver everything you already love about the ThinkPad brand in the smallest package yet.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Carbon is a fantastic all around laptop (Image credit: Rami Tabari)

If you’re looking for a great all-around laptop that’ll get you through the day, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Carbon may be the notebook for you.

For just $1,189, the IdeaPad Slim 7 Carbon features powerful performance combined with a gorgeous 14-inch OLED display, Dolby Atmos speakers, and a comfortable keyboard. The only real flaw this machine has is its below-average battery life, but even that discrepancy is negligible. It still lasted close to 10 hours on a charge.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 7 Carbon is a stellar laptop for the price and is a worthy purchase users will be delighted with.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable is the closest thing you can get to a Surface Pro 7, and it’s even better that one. (Image credit: Laptop Mag)

The Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable is, in short, a better version of the Surface Pro 7. It has the same detachable form factor and uses a kickstand that can rotate to about the same 160-degree angle. The 12.3-inch display is almost identical to the one on the Surface and, like the Pro 7, the detachable keyboard is fantastic. You even get military-grade durability from its rigid chassis.

Why is it better than the Surface Pro 7 and Pro 7+? Because the ThinkPad X12 Detachable lasts longer on a charge, enduring for more than 11 hours, and it weighs slightly less than its magnesium alloy competitor. Better yet, the X12 Detachable comes bundled with the keyboard and pen, although you’ll need to spend a pretty penny on this business-focused detachable.

If you need good speakers or a USB Type-A port, then you might go with the Surface Pro 7, otherwise, we prefer the X12 Detachable.

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is the best Lenovo gaming laptop (Image credit: Laptop Mag)

Lenovo’s Legion 5 Pro proves what’s possible when two opposing forces come together for the greater good. Those forces are AMD and Nvidia, and the greater good is the gaming community. Armed with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800 CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 graphics, the Legion 5 Pro gives gamers the power they need to run the latest AAA titles at Ultra graphics settings.

What it lacks in flashy aesthetics, it makes up for with a gorgeous 16-inch QHD display, an exceptional keyboard and touchpad, plenty of ports, and outstanding performance from the one-two punch of an AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU. And despite harnessing so much power, the Legion 5 Pro delivers respectable battery life at more than 6 hours on a charge. This is, without question, Lenovo’s best gaming laptop for the money.

The Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook is a significant departure from last year’s affordable Chromebook Duet. Although the higher price tag may drive some away, the considerable hardware upgrades make this 2-in-1 just as compelling.

The Duet 5 still features a fabric rear case and keyboard cover like the previous model, but open it up and the 13.3-inch OLED display will make you check that sub-$500 price again. The changes run deeper than that with a dramatically improved Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 processor, while also delivering over 13 hours on a single charge.

While it may not be the scrappy budget champ that the original Chromebook Duet was, the Duet 5 has bulked up and is ready to take on some heavyweight competition.

Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 is the best workstation on the market. (Image credit: Laptop Mag/Sean Riley)

The Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 2 improves on what was already a winning formula with the original ThinkPad P15 with upgraded performance and stellar battery life for the 1080p model.

The laptop’s 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11950H CPU, Nvidia RTX A5000 GPU, and 32GB of RAM make it an absolute workhorse of a workstation. If raw performance is your goal, it will be hard to beat the ThinkPad P15 Gen 2. The one concern for creatives will be the display, but if that’s crucial for you consider the OLED panel option or perhaps an external display.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 came in hot, shoving all of its competitors out of the way with its jaw-dropping performance results. Seriously, this business-oriented mobile workstation blows all of its rivals out of the water, making it one of the best mobile workstations on the market.

With RAM-maxed with 64GB of memory, along with an Intel Core i7-11850H CPU and a 16-inch, 3840 x 2400-pixel (4K) display, and a 1TB PCIe SSD, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 is the best sidekick a business power user can have. Not only does it offer beastly performance, but it also comes with a host of ISV certifications. What does that mean? It signifies that the ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 can run popular professional applications reliably and optimally, including Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Running GPU-intensive apps is a breeze for the brawny ThinkPad, thanks to its Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics card. It also means that this workstation can double as a gaming rig — woo-hoo! As long as you plan to keep the ThinkPad P1 stationed on a desk while it remains tethered to an outlet, its poor 6-hour battery life isn’t a problem.

The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus G2 is a stylish, innovative, and unique laptop designed to appeal to mobile professionals, students, and folks looking for a solid digital sketchpad or e-reader. And while the lid-mounted E-Ink display is a definite conversation starter, it’s a bonafide workhorse thanks to its Core i7 processor with integrated graphics and zippy SSD. It brings a useful new wrinkle to productivity and doesn’t make you pay extra for the pen.

The ThinkBook Plus G2 does stumble in a few areas such as battery life and the main display that could stand to be more vivid and brighter. But if you’re looking to take your multitasking and productivity to the next level, you can’t do better than the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus G2 ITG.

It’s rare to find a gaming laptop that goes all out for under $2,000, but consider that loot drop snagged with the Lenovo Legion 7i (Gen 6, Intel).

For $1,859, the Legion 7i offers incredible performance from its Intel Core i7-11800H CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, a beautiful 16-inch display, long battery life and a svelte design.

The Lenovo Legion 7i has a lot going for it, from its incredible performance and long battery life to its gorgeous display and design. However, it’s not perfect, and one of its flaws is hard to ignore considering you’ll be constantly using it (the keyboard).

Keyboard aside, the Lenovo Legion 7i is a great gaming laptop, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find another with as powerful performance and as bright and vivid of a display under $2,000.

If you’re after a brilliant business laptop option, Lenovo ThinkBook 13x is a good choice (Image credit: Future)

The ThinkBook 13x is a young whippersnapper that thought it could steal its predecessor’s shine, but the ThinkBook 13s Gen 2 is superior in many ways. It has a better variety of ports, zippier performance and quicker video transcoding.

That being said, the ThinkBook 13x boasts extra battery runtime, and it’s a decent option if you do some video transcoding here and there and you want a machine that saves you time. Plus, it’s portable and lightweight, sports a fantastic build quality, and even comes preinstalled with an AI transcription app. If you’re on the hunt for a reliable business laptop, the ThinkBook 13x won’t disappoint.

How we test Lenovo laptops

We put each Lenovo laptop through extensive benchmark testing — both synthetic and real-world — before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.

In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop’s display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 25GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.

These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop’s materials to the feel of its touchpad.

10 best laptops for long battery life – pick between Lenovo, Apple and more

Almost every laptop on sale today is powerful enough to handle what most of us do with our computers well. It’s a little gem of knowledge some manufacturers would rather you didn’t know.

A few years ago, this wasn’t the case. The cheapest Windows laptops would run like engines that hadn’t seen oil in years. Today, you can buy sub-£200 computers that feel smooth, if you do your research.

This puts more focus on aspects like design and battery life.

But how do you shop for a laptop that will definitely last through a long day of work, or a transatlantic flight?

Laptop-makers don’t help. Their battery life claims are often wildly out of step with reality. A little extra knowledge can help you see through the marketing speak to what you really get.

Let’s cover some important “good to know” factoids before digging into some of the long-lasting laptops you should consider.

Things to consider

Apple is the one company that provides fairly good battery life figures, published on its website. If it says a MacBook will last for 10 hours of iTunes video, it will do so, at a brightness level you might actually use.

Almost all claims from makers of Windows laptops are, well, bold. The disparity between claims and reality varies between manufacturers, and even models. But if you prime yourself to expect around two-thirds of the claimed stamina, you won’t be disappointed.

Why are Windows laptop battery life claims so often off the mark? Competition. If Lenovo makes a laptop it says lasts 20 hours, why would Dell want to say its alternative at a similar price lasts 13 hours?

There’s usually a situation in which these grand estimates can be realised. But they’re often based on benchmarking tools from years ago, at screen brightness levels most of us just won’t use. Our battery figures, which you’ll see below when we talk about specific laptops, are based on light web browsing and word processing.

If you’re after a laptop that lasts for eight hours of heavy gaming, such a thing does not exist. Gaming laptops tend to last just 90-120 minutes when working hard.

How to measure battery life

Want to dig further into the specs? On the product pages of laptops you’ll often see one of three battery stats, either its “cell”, “mAh” or “Wh” (or “Whr”) count.

The last is the most useful, and most common. This stands for watt-hour, and tells you how much power drain a battery can handle over time before running dry. A 50Wh battery will last an hour if your laptop uses 50 watts of power, or five hours if it uses 10 watts.

Long-lasting laptops tend to have 50Wh or higher batteries. And one in our test below has a battery above 70Wh.

Laptops are listed in price order.

Best for: Budget buyers

Key specs – Battery: “12 hour”, 3920 mAh; Screen: 14in 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Celeron N3160; Storage: 32GB; RAM: 4GB; Dimensions: 341 x 236.6 x 17mm; Weight: 1.55kg

A Chromebook is the best choice for very long battery life on a tight budget. In 2019, you’ll find plenty of Chromebooks that cost almost as much as Windows-style laptops. But it’s still the affordable ones we end up recommending to friends and family.

The Acer Chromebook 14 is one of the most impressive. Acer says it lasts up to 12 hours, and the reality is closer to 8-9 hours.

This may not sound remarkable when its software, Chrome OS, can seem more like a version of Android made for laptops than a full Windows-style experience. But the Chromebook 14 has a lot else going for it.

It has a full aluminium shell, so looks fairly similar to a £800-1000 laptop from half-way across a cafe. This is also one of the most affordable laptops with a “Full HD” screen. It is much sharper and clearer than those of most budget laptops, and is the reason the current Acer Chromebook 14 doesn’t last quite as long as the old model it replaced.

Be careful when shopping around for the Chromebook 14 though. There are two versions. Our pick has a “Full HD” screen and Intel N3160 CPU. The cheaper version has a N3060 CPU — check for these details before hitting the checkout.

Neither is a bad buy, and the lower-end Chromebook 14 may even last slightly longer, but as an all-round package we’d likely pick the Full HD version.

Best for: Gamers

Key specs – Battery: 56Wh; Screen: 15.6in 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Core i5-8300H; Storage: 128GB + 1TB HDD; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 380 x 258 x 22.7mm; Weight: 2.53kg

Almost no gaming laptops offer good battery life. The one stand-out of the last year or so was the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, which soldiered on for nine hours.

That model has been discontinued, but the Dell G3 15 is a solid alternative if you want a laptop that can play games and handle life away from the charger. It lasts for 6 hours 15 minutes to seven hours.

Yes, next to the competition here, that is not impressive. But it is far better than the 3-4 hour gaming laptop norm.

Will it last for that long when playing games? Not even close. You can expect under two hours when stressing the graphics processor. If you want to play games on a (socket free) long train journey, you are better off with a Nintendo Switch.

Dell made the G3 15 Gaming for normal people who want to play games. Most variants cost less than a shiny style laptop, but are significantly more powerful. It’s a little less thick and heavy than most enthusiast gamer models too, at 22.7mm and 2.5kg.

Its entire shell is plastic, but this is actually the norm for gaming machines, even ones significantly more expensive than the G3 15. You could argue this laptop does not belong in this list. But gamers want to muck about on the sofa with their laptops just as often as the rest of us.

Best for: Breezy longevity

Key specs – Battery: “25 hours”; Screen: 13.3in 1920 x 1080, IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 850; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 306.8 x 216.4 x 12.5 mm; Weight: 1.2kg

Over the last two years we’ve seen a new kind of laptop emerge. The Lenovo Yoga C630 WOS is of this type. Its processor is closer to that of a phone than a normal laptop.

It uses less power, creates less heat and doesn’t even require a fan. That means silent running, 24/7. Lenovo says the Yoga C630 lasts up to 25 hours, an incredibly long time.

As you may have guessed if you’ve read this whole article, the reality doesn’t quite match up. However, you can still get 14-15.5 hours of real day-to-day light use. And we’re not going to complain about that.

A more serious issue affects any laptop with a “Snapdragon” CPU like the Yoga C630 WOS’s. Many apps won’t run, and you’re likely to see compatibility issues in some that do, especially games. This is a laptop that excels at being light, portable and long-lasting. That it also has a 4G card slot boosts this even further. But if you want to unwind with some games too, or try out music production or photo editing, look for a laptop with an Intel or AMD processor.

Key specs – Battery: “12 hour”, 50.3Wh; Screen: 13.3in 2560 x 1600 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Dual-core Intel Core i5; Storage: 128GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 304.1 x 212.4 x 15.6 mm; Weight: 1.25kg

The MacBook Air is Apple’s longest-lasting laptop. Most of its models are rated at 10 hours use between charges, but this one creeps up to 12 hours.

You’ll see this sort of stamina when playing video or writing documents. Around 10 hours of mixed use is closer to what you’ll see when hopping between apps and browser tabs. Apple delivers closer to the promised battery life than any other manufacturer, but longevity always relies on use.

In most respects the MacBook Air is a delight. Its 13.3-inch screen is ultra-sharp, and large enough for real work. At 1.25kg this laptop is very portable, too.

However, a MacBook Air is not the obvious choice for those after as much power as they can get for their money, as well as long battery life. The MacBook Air uses Intel Core i5 CPUs with two cores. Most Windows alternatives have punchier quad-core processors.

It does not make an obvious difference when you pootle about in MacOS, skipping between web browsing, writing documents and watching video. But if you want to play casual games (or the few console-style games that support Mac), or use pro-grade image editing or music production software, the MacBook Air may come up short.

Those who haven’t experienced a MacBook before, or in several years, also need to consider its ultra-shallow keyboard and complete lack of “normal” USB ports. The Air only has two USB-C ports, like those found on Android phones. They may be ultra-fast, but you’ll need an adapter to plug in your old external hard drive.

Key specs – Battery: “14.5 hour”, 45.2Wh; Screen: 13.5in “PixelSense” 2256×1504 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Core i5-8250U; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 308.1 x 223.27 x 14.48 mm; Weight: 1.25kg

The company behind Windows makes its own laptops, and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 is its latest. Microsoft says battery life lasts for 14.5 hours of video, which translates to around 9-10 hours of general use.

Some rivals use bigger batteries than the 45Wh here, but there are other features to admire. The Surface Laptop 2 has a very pleasant 13.5-inch PixelSense screen with an unusual 3:2 aspect. This means its width is less stretched-out, which is handy for documents and spreadsheets, if not widescreen movies.

The Surface Laptop 2’s feel is unusual, too. Its lid is aluminium, like those of most fancy laptops, but the keyboard surround is finished in Alcantara. This is a man-made alternative to suede. It has an almost fuzzy surface, much softer and warmer than metal.

You’ll find Alcantara in the interiors of some yachts, and on headbands of headphones like the £1000 Sennheiser HD 800. It is more hard-wearing than you might assume.

The Surface Laptop 2 weighs just over 1.2kg, has a touchscreen and supports the Apple Pencil-like Surface Pen. Unlike some rivals, though, the stylus does not come in the box. You need to spend roughly an extra £79 on one.

This isn’t the top-performing laptop around for stamina, value or even raw performance. But it is a little different to everything else.

Best for: Getting creative

Key specs – Battery: “22.5 hour”, 61Wh; Screen: 13.3in 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Core i5-8265U; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 308.8 x 217.9 x 14.7 mm; Weight: 1.33kg

Some of you may associate HP with printers and stodgy work laptops, but its HP Spectre X360 is one of the most dynamic around. It is an ultra-slim touchscreen hybrid with a 360-degree hinge, eye-catching gold and dark brown finish, and one of the boldest battery claims going.

HP says the 13-inch version lasts for 22 hours. As this is not an Apple laptop, it does fall short of this in person. But the 12.5 to 14 hours it does last, with video playback or light work, is still among the longest around.

The best way to make a laptop last and last is to cram in a big battery. And HP does, a 61Wh one. However, its recent “Whiskey Lake” series processors also likely have a hand in its stamina.

You’ll often find the Spectre X360 at a tempting price online, and even the base level Core i5 version, selling for around £1000, is powerful enough to satisfy just about anyone.

It also comes with an Active Pen that lets you doodle away on the screen itself.

Best for: Sheer battery capacity

Key specs – Battery: “21 hour”, 72Wh; Screen: 14in 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Core i5-8250U; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 323.4 x 211.8 x 16.5mm; Weight: 995g

The LG Gram 14 sounds too good to be true. It’s a reasonable price, has a powerful Intel Core-series processor that lets you run any app you like, and “up to 21 hour” battery life. That you get this combo from a company that doesn’t produce many laptops makes it all the more remarkable. Where’s the catch?

There are no major faults here. But while the battery life is superb, it’s nowhere near the 21-hour claim. In reality you can expect 11-14 hours of solid, normal use at the kind of middling brightness most people set when in indoors.

Its shell isn’t quite as rigid as a MacBook’s either. This is mostly because LG aimed for low weight as well as class-leading battery life. It has a magnesium-rich alloy body, which is tough but does not feel quite as cool and metallic as the more popular aluminium.

Still, its combo of real power, low weight and day-job-decimating stamina makes the LG Gram 14 one of the most compelling options around. Want a bigger laptop? LG also makes a 15.6-inch version.

Best for: Power and portability

Key specs – Battery: “21 hour”, 52Wh; Screen: 13.3in 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD (4K upgrade available); OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Core i5-8265U; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 7.8mm – 302 x 199 x 11.6mm; Weight: 1.23kg

The Dell XPS 13 line was once battery life royalty. Certain older versions of the XPS 13 could last up to 13-14 hours of “real” use off a charge.

Its latest version isn’t quite as long-lasting, as Dell made the XPS 13 thinner and lighter to add “style laptop” allure. For this particular test, that’s bad news. But even the thinner Dell XPS 13 is well above average. It lasts approximately 10-11 hours between charges.

If you want to try to hunt down the older version with the larger battery cell, look for the Dell XPS 13 9360. We weren’t overjoyed when we saw Dell make this move, but the new design is even easier to carry around.

The latest Dell XPS 13 weighs just 1.23kg and is only 11.6mm thick. These are impressive numbers for a laptop with a “full power” Intel Core processor. However, bear in mind it only has USB-C ports, like a MacBook.

Other design highlights include narrow screen surrounds, for more display per square inch, and the XPS’s classic “executive chic” look.

Best for: Long-form typing, and aspiring novelists

Key specs – Battery: “15 hour”, 57Wh; Screen: 14in, 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD; OS: Windows 10; CPU: Intel Core i5-8520U; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 323.5 x 217.1 x 15.95 mm; Weight: 1.13kg

A lot of laptops have gradually taken cues from Apple MacBooks over the last decade. More aluminium, fewer connections on the side, shallower keyboards and even alternatives to the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar started to bleed into Windows models. Hate that? Buy one of these.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a great laptop for those who want to get as far as possible from that Apple style without trading away a fancy look and feel. Lenovo calls this a “business laptop”, but we think just about anyone would be happy with it.

Its number one appeal is the keyboard. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has a very deep, well-defined and smooth keyboard. If we wanted to write a novel, this is the laptop we’d choose to tap it out on.

The X1 Carbon also has a matt screen, which is handy if you’ll use your laptop outside. This finish diffuses reflections. And while it may look a bit plain, cast in the plain black of a laptop made for Excel spreadsheets, its build is excellent.

Several layers of carbon fibre sit over a magnesium alloy rollcage, for a tough frame that weighs just 1.13kg. And the all-important battery life? Lenovo claims 15 hours. The reality is closer to 11 hours, but it’s still among the longest-lasting Windows laptops with a full Intel Core series processor.

Best for: Power user Apple fans

Key specs – Battery: “10 hour”, 58Wh; Screen: 13.3in, 2560 x 1600 IPS LCD; OS: MacOS; CPU: Intel Core i5-8259U; Storage: 256GB; RAM: 8GB; Dimensions: 304 x 202 x 21mm; Weight: 1.37kg

Apple MacBooks have come under fire more than ever in the last year or so. Some don’t like their ultra-shallow keyboards. Many think they are too expensive. And some models have had problems with keyboard reliability.

Not very “Apple”, is it? However, delivering the promised battery life is something no-one does quite as well as Apple.

If Apple says a laptop lasts 10 hours between charges, it really will do so. Almost every maker of Windows laptops over-promises on battery life, often by testing it with old tools that don’t reflect how we use our laptops today.

The MacBook Pro line is the one to go for if you want to do more demanding work, even if its 10-hour battery does not match the MacBook Air’s 12 hours. You also need to be careful when shopping for a MacBook Pro.

Only the expensive Touch Bar versions have more powerful quad-core processors. Those without the bar use older 7th Gen processors no Windows laptop would be seen dead wearing in 2019.
